They came, adjusted the thermostat, went downstairs. The boiler was working. I just didn't do the thermostat correctly. Said if I had any problems, to call them. They are on my "A" list.

I purchased a "coupon" from them, then had them out to quote some work on some small plumbing issues. Quote was extremely high, and I had someone else do the work for 1/4 of the price.

This bathroom sink drain runs slow or gets clogged about every 6 months and I can usually take care of it myself. This time time around I was unsuccessful. Since this was an old house the drain had smaller diameter lead pipe. My options were to "snake" out the drain or to replace the lead with plastic which would be costly. Problem with "snaking" out the drain is that the "snake" could tear up the tail piece which was permanently attached to the lead pipe. This would also be costly to replace. The technician was able to clear the drain without damage to the tail piece and he also offered a container of a bio-emzyne to add to the drain on a monthly basis to keep it running freely.
Description of Work: Cleaned a bathroom sink drain.

Sad to say, this is the only time I have had to write a negative review for a company, and despite a written letter and subsequent phone calls to try to speak to the company owner, Eric Rios, to try to resolve some of these issues, we did not get any response from him. The water company told us that any reputable plumber had access to the location of the water main outside the house, and the plumber should have known that. The water company also told us that we should ask to have the plumber use his professional metal detector to find the outside main because it was buried more than 5' below the surface of the ground since the house is over 60 years old. There was no way for us to find it ourselves. When Jim, the plumber, left, he never told us that Rivers Co. had the metal detection device that was needed, but when someone DID come from Rivers to find the main on Saturday, we were told that it would be hundreds of dollars to dig down to find the main, turn off the water to the house, replace the broken handle, and turn the water back again. In addition, although the service contract was to provide emergency service, we were told it would be at least Monday before anyone could come with a bobcat to dig up the area around the main. Repeated phone calls to the owner were not returned over the weekend, although the service contract had also said we could get weekend calls returned. We had to find another plumber who was able to dig down by hand in order to avoid tearing up the newly-seeded lawn, turn off the water, repair the handle and turn the water on again. Because we had bought TWO service contracts, I sought to cancel my contract, and I called the office to speak to the manager who said he would contact the owner. When I had not heard from him for a week, I called back again, and was told in so many words that they had no interest in maintaining my good will or in returning my half of the service contract. (I was certainly not asking to have my money returned for the work that had been done at my house, nor for the half of the service contract used at the other house.) I had wanted to give the owner a chance to talk to me before I wrote a negative review, but although I never raised my voice or used any bad language, the manager told me that the contract was too far back (although we had written the letter and called in a timely manner but received no response!) and the owner would not refund my money for the service contract, and then he hung up on me! This damage at the rental house delayed other repairs that we were trying to make to the house in order to rent it out this summer, and the fact that the company was non-responsive and rude to me made me more upset than the extra money it cost us to undo the damage that was caused by the repairman. After Sam, the office manager hung up on me, I waited a few more days to see if anyone would call to apologize, but that never happened. It is unfortunate that for the sake of a few dollars, this company preferred to ignore my comments and complaints, and instead, have me write such a negative review!
Description of Work: I called Rivers Plumbing because I had used them successfully in the past, and I had a blocked drain that needed to be opened. The repairman who came out fixed the drain, and also offered to sell us a service contract for a year that would give us priority access to calls and a discount on future calls. At that point, I would have written a good review. Because we own a second house, we asked if we could buy a second contract for the other house, and they agreed. Jim from Rivers Plumbing came out to our second house which is a rental property the next day to drain the hot water heater and to do a general inspection of the plumbing in the house. During the course of his inspection, he broke off a handle on the water heater and on the water main into the house, and told us after the break that it was at OUR risk that he had performed the inspection and drained the water heater. He also said it was OUR responsibility to have the water company turn off the water to fix the problem. In addition, he said that both the dishwasher and the garbage disposal were non-functioning, even though we had used them both less than a few weeks before. I always thought that using bonded and insured repairmen meant some protection for the homeowner, but apparently, this is not the case.

Person doing the inspection arrived on time and was very professional. The Big Deal said - ask us about our tankless water heaters. I was very specific when I made the appointment for the inspection that I was interested in a tankless water heater, but I wanted to be sure they knew I would need an electric one and not gas. The person did not really know too much about the tankless water heaters in general and could provide no real information about them other than to hand me a generic printout on how the tankless water heater works. I would use the company again for general repairs, just disappointed at the lack of knowledge\effort about something advertised and then also asked about.

Of course, it seemed expensive, however, when checked the rate was reasonable for the quality of parts and service. They came within two hours of our call on a Saturday. The trip charge seemed high but was balanced against the prompt, professional service. The repairman did not try to sell us anything additional, just gave a clear explanation of the problem and the issues that attach in terms of other parts wearing out, etc. He was friendly, but remained professional in his demeanor and quickly installed the new motor for the upstairs unit, checked the response on the diownstairs unit as requested and cleaned both of our units (zoned for upstairs and downstairs) and left the surrounding area clean before leaving. Will use again.

I have called him several times and so has my son. I was told that they were waiting for parts to come in but that was a couple weeks ago and he was very apologetic. I haven't heard anything from them since. I called earlier today and was told that he would call me right back, but it's been 5 or so hours and I haven't heard back. I understand that they are busy, but at this point, I would prefer to get my money back and get the work done. Update: 8.28.2013~ Company called back. We are scheduling the work. I will revise when done.

We bought our home 10 years ago, and at the time the water heater was 12 years old, Now,our 22 year old, 50 gallon water heater was beginning to leak from the bottom. I called Rivers Plumbing on a Sunday, and they set up an 8am appointment for the Next Day, at 8am, with Jeremy. I found Rivers Plumbing after finding them on Laclede Gas Companies list of preferred contractors and finding them on Angies List as well, with great reviews. Jeremy, from Rivers Plumbing Company, came out to our home to assess our situation, arrived at 8am on Monday morning, After his inspection, answering all our questions and concerns, he told us what he would be providing for us, and the cost. We were able to set up an appointment for the water heater installation and drain cleaning on the next day at 9am. The following day, Tuesday at 9am, Jeremy showed up and began the work immediately, emptying the water and removing the old water heater and installing the new one. Jeremy made sure that all the water pipes and our sprinkler system, would not be harmed during the installation. During the installation Jeremy made me feel very comfortable with and confident and was able to answer all my questions. Now the new 50 Gal water heater is totally up to code and really looks nice. We also were having an issue with the basement drain that was in the same room as the water heater. The drain seemed to drain water slowly. Jeremy inspected and cleaned the drain and in the process discovered that our drain had a Golf Ball that would not go through the "pea trap", but wasn't stopping it up either... just made the water drain slowly. Jeremy carefully removed, what must of been a 30 year old Golf Ball, and proceeded to check that there were no other obstacles in the pipes, all the way to the main sewer pipe. Everything was cleaned up and we were more than satisfied and would Highly Recommend Rivers Plumbing.

Horrible, one of the WORST Company?s ever!! I waited for 6 hours for them to show up, when they did show up the employee, told me before he even looked at it that we should just buy a new AC unit. Then he did not even take out all the screws to the front of the unit and bent it. Then said that the fan was broken and they do not make that fan anymore. He said that they could put in a new unit and the only brand they sell is Train. I told him no thank you. He did not even put all the screws back into the AC unit and went to his truck. It took him about 20 minutes to write up the bill, which the bill was $95.00 for about 10 minutes of work. When he got out of the truck he said that he found a fan and it would cost $400.00 for the fan and then labor would be added to that. I gave him his check and told him to please leave. I went to Granger and found the fan for $55.00 and installed it myself. My AC unit, works just fine now. It was bad enough that he bent the front of my unit, but then decided to be degrading to me because I am a female and lie and tell me first they did not make that fan anymore. Then try to have me pay $400.00 dollars for a $55.00 fan. This is the worst company ever. I have told everyone I know what a poor company and to go with anyone but them.

My kitchen sink basin became detached from my granite countertop due to the sealant failing and apparently a lack of proper bracketing by the original installer of the sink (not Hoffman Brothers). I called Hoffman Brothers as they had repaired some minor issues for me in the past. I explained the problem several times to the lady on the phone and asked if that was a repair they could do. She said it was and set me up to have a plumber come out. The plumber arrived and told me that the order he received from his office was that there was a problem with a "faucet." I did not mention the faucet at all with the lady on the phone. He told me they could not do the repair, that I needed to call a "countertop guy." This would not have been that big a deal, as I was uncertain who to call in the first instance, but that is why I explained exactly what the problem was with the lady on the phone and asked if they did that repair. The plumber felt bad given that there was apparently a miscommunication and called his office. Nonetheless, he was not much of an advocate when he called the office, simply stating what the problem was and that they did not do that, and asked if he should "just collect the $65.00." He told me "well, she says I've still got to collect the $65.00 for the visit." He told me that he was just doing what he was told when I let him know that I was not pleased given that this could have all been avoided on the front end when I explained exactly what the problem was and asked if that was a repair they could do. Honestly, the $65.00 fee is not that much compared to what some plumbers charge to come out, but given that there was an error on their end as to whether this was the type of repair they could do, obviously this is much more than I should have been charged. All in all this was a major disappointment, as I had trusted the Hoffman Brothers name for both heating/cooling and plumbing issues for several years.
Description of Work: I called to inquire whether the plumber could repair my sink basin, which had detached from my granite counter-top. I inquired over the phone whether they could do the repair and stated several times what the exact issue was. I was assured by the lady on the phone that they could do the repair. She was wrong and they still charged me for the visit.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. We delayed the service until spring because we had something in particular to have done until there was warmer weather. We needed some things changed out regarding the outside faucet. As far as the job they did, they did it fine. There wasn't anything particularly good or bad about it. They did the job they were supposed to do. They were just outrageous in the way they charge.
