Fitzgibbons Painting did an excellent job painting the exterior of our house. It looks noticeably better from the street. The vinyl shutter color had faded and weathered a lot but now looks just like new. Every aspect of the job was handled with quality and in professional manner. They were easy to work with and did what we asked. The job took about three days from start to finish. Fitzgibbons let us know up front that it would take about 8 weeks to start the job after paying the initial deposit. The actual start was about 8-1/2 weeks later. I appreciate knowing this upfront before agreeing to a job.
Description of Work: Power washed exterior vinyl siding and wood trim. Painted exterior wood trim and vinyl shutters, including abatement of lead paint under front porch. Patched small holes/cracks and replaced a few decayed fascia boards.

We contacted them around mid-Sept. 2013 and paid the deposit for their estimate. They came out to view the job. They wanted to start work in early December; we said no because we thought it would get too cold too quickly for the paint (turns out we were right on that!). Finally they were able to come at the end of July. I downgraded them for "responsiveness" because scheduling took so long and we always had to initiate contact with the office about their coming. Their reason for the delayed scheduling was, they wanted to have a large contingent (6 men) to get through the project quickly; understandable but I do think the office should have been more informed and proactive about keeping us informed. Just be aware. Once they did come, however, they were very prompt, came every day, and finished in about 12-13 working days. They were very good about identifying problems (e.g., wood rot in a few areas) and found a great color match that minimizes the appearance of the storm windows (this is a historic district). The job came out looking great! They were careful about picking up, perhaps a little less careful with the landscaping but that should resolve by next year. The price is reasonable and justified for the work they did; it included paint, matching caulk, and a couple of glass panes. (Thus the "B", only because I would reserve "A" for less-than-expected cost.) The painters were good to work with. I would recommend them and would use them again.
Description of Work: Painted all exterior window trim of our large 3-story + basement brick house in a historic district. This included removing/replacing storm windows, replacing a couple of cracked ones, and washing some windows. Also some ceiling drywall mudding in one room.

Contracted in late May. Painting schedule for 7-8 weeks, they came one week late. Purchased paint from another paint company other than what agreed on. Did not completely cover fixtures when spraying ceiling and lots of overspray. Unprofessional appearance of painters. In jeans and shirts except one. Finished job in two days that should have taken 4-5. Sloppy work with electrical outlets ,knobs and trim. Often with paint . Contacted owner and he did respond with lead painter. Agreed work was not good and came to repair and clean. We felt we needed to watch all work extremely closely. Required complete reprint with correct paint. Still hurried. Still cleaning paint droplets. Would not recommend.

I was very pleased with the interior and exterior painting job performed by Fitzgibbons. The painters were very professional and respectful of my home(cleaning up after themselves). They kept me updated throughout the day of their progress and when they came across an unexpected problem that would need some carpentry work they informed me immediately. I was pleased to know that Fitzgibbons could take care of that for me. It is good to know they have skilled workers to do that...a One Stop Contractor.

The painting part seems to be quite good, and it only took 2 days. The crew consisted of 5 men. They put down drop cloths and picked up all of those scrapings when they were finished. They vacuumed up the particles that didn't land on the dropcloth.

It was 2 months between the time I signed the contract until the time I was able to get them over. However, we signed the contract in the summer, when they were in their busy season. When they did come out and paint, there were lots of areas where they didn't touch. It looks like my husband did it, which is sad, considering how much money I paid. The company was reluctant to rectify the problems. They splashed paint onto a brand new deck and the owner claimed it was mold - and it was BRAND NEW. They came back out and redid a few areas. However, they weren't as professional as I'd wanted them to be. Also, the laborers left cigarette butts and drinks around - they didn't clean up after themselves.
Description of Work: They painted the exterior of our 3 story, Tudor-style house with long, vertical style planks above the baseboard. We used their paint.

They responded very quickly to my initial vsll. Once I decided to move forward, they were booked 5 weeks out, which was fine, and when 5 weeks came, they were right here. They did more than what they quoted, probably, but didn't charge me more. They were very efficient. They were in 3 days and out. They left us the extra paint so we can touch up as needed. The workers were very nice. I have no complaints. They also honored a coupon for $400 I received in the mail.
Description of Work: They painted the exterior of my house (siding & trim) and had to replace some carpentry work (which was half of the bill). They went with a better brand of siding (James Hardy Concrete), since what they quoted us wasn't available.

How did it go? Perfect. I evaluated three other local providers of these services and went with Fitzgibbons. Due to some personal schedule conflicts, I didn't make my deposit and schedule the job for almost a year after the original bid. I called Jeff to ask if he would need to rebid the job and he said that he would stick with his original estimate. I sent my deposit, received an acknowledgement of the deposit and then a call from the Jennifer at the office to request approval to begin work. This happened in about 2 weeks from deposit. The crew showed up on time and began work. Our house was built in 1880 and is a Kirkwood Landmark home. We were mindful of its history and so were the crew! The crew were a welcome group of professionals who helped restore the old house to her former glory. They seemed willing and able to do just about anything. They also seemed able to predict the weather more accurately than the local meteorologists. I would also like to recognize the office staff, especially Jennifer, who was a great resource to us throughout the project. The phone was ALWAYS answered by a live person and that person was pleasant, customer focused and able to handle any questions. I will be using Fitzgibbons in the future for additional work.
Description of Work: Power washed, scraped, safely removed probable lead paint, rebuilt front porch stairs, replaced window surrounds, covered gutters, removed and replaced rotting wood, removed and rebuilt 12x12 deck, rebuilt cupola with weather vane, installed cupola, painted house, carriage house, small barn, porch wood furniture, removed all debris and materials. Provided consultation, scope and estimate for job change orders such as increased carpentry and paint work. Made us laugh quite a few days at the challenges of old homes!

I used Fitzgibbons in May of 2013 previously to this current August 2013 service date and was very pleased with their work and service both times. In May, they power washed and stained the deck attached to the back of our house (about $900)---a big job as I don't think this had ever been done and there was a lot of wood. This current service date, they scraped and painted the brick around the front porch and stained the porch's wood floor and steps. Calling in to the office both times someone either answered the phone or returned my message the same day. The estimator got me estimates within a week--very reasonable in my opinion. They were very prompt in setting up dates/times to start the work and showed up when they said they would. They came within about two weeks of my initial call for the August service and completed the work the same day. Last spring, I had called in April to set up a service date for May (my choice of date--we had a bird nesting on the deck and I didn't want to disturb it until the babies had left) and they were able to accommodate me with no problem. For both service dates, I met the lead painter that day and each was friendly and courteously listened to my concerns and instructions. The back deck work took two trips since it needed to dry out after the power washing and they came back to finish up as soon as the deck was ready to stain. I wanted the brick surrounding the front porch to match the color of the siding on the house. The lead painter was honest with me and said he would get the color as close as possible. Truthfully, it looks like a match to me, but I appreciated him telling me in advance that it might not match. The front steps had deteriorated somewhat due to neglect by a previous owner so I wasn't sure how they would turn out. Again, he was honest with me about what was possible. I have to say that I think the steps look really nice. I would definitely use Fitzgibbons Painting again.

We have left messages on their answering machine and with their receptionist and whoever is in charge has been ducking us. NO CALL back in 2 days, despite our efforts to reach them. Mind you, this is less than a week before the job is to start...THEY CAN'T TELL US WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO SHOW UP FOR A 3 DAY JOB. Maybe this day is always their answer. We are at the point where we want them to either honor their commitment or give us back our money, but again, they refuse to call us back. Update - the owner called and insisted that they never schedule jobs in advance, even though they call you up in advance to schedule. He was rude and unapologetic to my wife (for not returning her calls for 2 days...claimed he was working and I guess that meant he went two days without access to a phone). We didn't feel that this was going to be a good experience and decided to get our money back, which they happily refunded. So, if you want to be at the mercy of people you hire and want to take apart several rooms of your house waiting for painters to show up, then I guess you know who to call.
Description of Work: Was very impressed with them after meeting them at the home show and soon after that (FEBRUARY) we had them provide an estimate. After providing a down payment and SCHEDULING (to our knowledge) the painting job (it is a 3 day job), we received a call from them two days ago telling us that they WERE NOT going to honor the dates we scheduled months ago. FYI. We are a working household but have arranged time off our busy schedules and have also arranged for relatives to come in let the painters in and out.

(Member name removed), On June 6th, I called (Member name removed) to answer her concerns about scheduling. I let her know we would be there on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 as she requested. The date, June 11, 2013 is next to her name on the schedule board. On June 4, 2013, she was contacted to see if we could schedule her job on June 5, 2013, this date did not work for her. So, as usual, we went down the list to the next customer who was available and scheduled. A note was put on my desk to contact (Member name removed) . I was not able to get back to her immediately or even the next day. My first available chance, I called. It was a few days later, and I apologize for that. As I said, I confirmed her schedule date of Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 7 AM. I explained that we do not guarantee dates and yes, I do understand that people have busy lives. Why we don’t guarantee a date is because some customers request additional work that will sometimes push us back a day or two. Sometimes rain effects our scheduling. Again, I confirmed her start date and time. On June 6, 2013, that evening on my desk was an Angie’s List correspondence from (member name removed), same address as (Member name removed) . We have been given an “F” rating and some untrue, negative, damaging verbiage was written. I called (Member name removed) and left her message asking if she would like her deposit back. The company was very responsive, and accomodating. They were able to get someone out for an evening meeting to survey the work needed and quote the job. The full quote arrived int he mail a couple of days later. There are two reasons I chose not to use the company. 1) their price was not as competitive as other companies. 2) they insisted that our house needed to have lead abatement because it was built before 78(77) even though there has never been any lead used on the exterior. I read in other interviews that other Angies List members had a similar experience. I got the impression that the company didn't want to deal with houses built before 78 because of hte hassle.

Response from Fitzgibbons Painting
[member name removed], Thank you for your response. I wanted to let you know, a few years back the EPA came out with a ruling on homes that were built before 1978. The rule pertained to the renovation, repair, or painting of a home more easily known as RRP. These rules state that any home with lead paint or any home built before 1978 could be assumed to have lead paint. This doesn't always mean that we are 100% sure it does contain lead paint. However, anyone who will disturb 6 square feet of an interior or 20 square feet of an exterior must be a certified RRP contractor. This does not only apply to painting contractors. RRP requires steps to be taken to ensure a project is done lead safe. An EPA pamphlet must be given to homeowners at the time of work. I looked at the proposal and stopped by to make sure the proposal was in line with the work to be performed. The estimate you were given starts off that we proposed to paint your siding, fascia, dormers, trim boards, gutters and downspouts, garage doors and casing, gable vents and upper rail at screen porch. There was going to be a color change to the siding and the trim which requires two coats of paint to those surfaces. Also, you were going to have extensive carpentry work— The face boards and siding at dormers, drip edge and bottom two rows of siding at garage front, eleven pieces of siding at the roof line at garage front, ten pieces of siding at right side, and fascia board at right of garage doors, approximately 40 boards. The house was going to be power washed, scraped, spot primed, and caulked prior to painting for $4,835.00. We also have a $400 coupon you could have used, which would bring the price to $4,435.00, of which $2,935.00 for painting, power wash and prep and $1,500.00 for carpentry. As you can see, we maintain an A rating with Angie’s List. We also carry general liability and workers compensation insurance. Beside doing background checks on our employees, we hire skilled painters and carpenters. I hope this brings some light to the proposal and hope that we get another opportunity to assist you in your upcoming projects. Very sincerely, Jeffrey Fitzgibbons

We had some awful bright and dull/heavy colors in our home when we bought our house. Fitzgibbons Painting did a great job. The employees where professional, courtesy and mindful of others people home and surroundings. They showed up everyday at the same time, early and eager to get the job started. All the work was done in a timely manner. And they clean up after themselves every night, not leaving a mess. We truly have enjoyed the finish product. What a big difference.
