Advanced Computers has been serving the needs of businesses, both large and small, for over a decade. Michael Anderson began building and repairing computer systems for friends and family, out of his basement in the suburbs of Ferguson. The computer expert was receiving so many requests for computer repair that he decided to open Advanced Computers with the vision of protecting and supporting St Louis computer users. Soon, word of his outstanding service spread and now with the help of his trusted technician Charles Cook, the two could hardly keep up with demand. They knew that to be truly helpful, they would need to be able to answer the call for help 24 hours a day. Within a year, the staff at Advanced Computers grew in number from 2 to 8. Advanced Computers has now grown to a staff of nearly 10 professionals committed to delivering unparalleled service

My computer became unstable and would not boot into Windows. I took it to Advanced Computers and left it. The next day Michael, the owner, said that the hard drive was bad but the data could be recovered. He offered a 750 GB Seagate for $80-$90 (he wasn't sure of the price), which I approved. Michael did not say that it was a new hard drive, but he did not say that it was used either. That would currently be full price for a top-line new 1 TB hard drive at retail. The full price for the repair was $295, including $95 for the hard drive. When I got the machine home I noticed that the hard drive they installed made audible buzzing and clicking noises. I have since learned that all hard drives are quiet through most of their useful life, but when the seek mechanism becomes worn enough they make these buzzing and clicking noises. I used some disc software that they had left on the machine and the hard drive failed the seek test, further evidence that the seek mechanism was near the end of it's life. A hard drive this worn could fail at any time. I told Michael that I did not want the hard drive and why, and he agreed to take it back. I purchased a new hard drive and installed it myself. When I took the hard drive back, the best Michael would do was a partial refund of $77. Note that I would never knowingly put a used hard drive into this machine at any price. Hard drives wear out. And I use this PC in my business where reliability is critical. I have used Advanced Computers several times over the years and have always been satisfied. Mostly I dealt with Charles, the technician, who has always been helpful and professional. But I am disappointed that Michael would sell me a used hard drive that was near the end of it's service life for full price and without telling me that it was used - knowing that I would use it in a critical business computer. Caveat Emptor.
Description of Work: Advanced Computers repaired my PC after a hard drive failure.

Response from ADVANCED COMPUTERS
Though I try very very hard to make every customers visit to Advanced Computers a great visit, truth be said, every customer walking away from our shop might have a disagreement with our actions and our response. I am very sorry [member name removed] experience was not a pleasant one. The facts to the case are, [member name removed] broke his home business machine in for repair, which was later determined that one of his mirrored harddrives had failed. (mirrored harddrives are two harddrives of same size and speed copying each other simultaneously.) With this defect, his system no longer booted into Windows. [member name removed] had called my office 7 times on the initial day checking to see if the system was working. I continued to work specifcally on [member name removed] machine only to help with getting it back to him as quickly as possible since it was his business computer and his business was not operating at full capacity. In so doing, I recommended to [member name removed] a process to which we could expedite in getting his system back as quickly as possible. I respect [member name removed] feeling in regard to used harddrives but being in the business for over 30 years i would not have recommended it had i not thought it would fix the problem and work without normal failure. Harddrives can go at anytime new or used. Almost [member name removed] is not aware that the diagnostic software he tested the used harddrive with was made for a Western Digital harddrive and not the type of harddrive we replaced in his system. We test all used parts throughly and had ran a test on this harddrive. I even gave [member name removed] a discount on the drive and a extend 6 month warranty on the part. We tested the harddrive upon its return to us and the drive tested no problems. [member name removed]was refunded the full price of the harddrive in which he was charged minus the credit i had given him for a used drive and because he was a prior returning customer. I believe [member name removed] bad response to Advanced Computers was due more to a personal matter than a professional manner. If [member name removed] should return again, and I will note that he has done business with us more than three times, we will handle his computer problems in a professional manner. Feel free to stop by and see our professional operation.
