My wife and I had never purchased carpet before. We were overwhelmed by the choices, prices, and types available. We ended up at the Advance Carpet One on Manchester and were greeted by Mr. Mers. He ran us through the various options and "sales" available. Eventually, we found a carpet we liked. One piece of advice I received from our general contractor handling our project was that "carpeting is negotiable." So, with that in mind, we asked for a "free" upgrade of their high-end carpet pad - the healthy living 1/2 inch pad. Jim, without missing a beat, looked at my wife and I and said "we can make that work." When asked again before we left the store whether the final price included the free healthier living pad upgrade, Jim said "yes." Fast forward a week. Jim comes to our house to take measurements on a Friday evening. On Monday, I call in to Advance Carpet One to get the bid. The bid arrives but it shows a $200+ price for the pad. I email back, asking that they resolve the price discrepancy so as to reflect the free pad that we were promised. This is where the problem arises. Jim writes back, claiming he has no memory of the free upgrade. When I respond, reminding him of our conversation, he replies that they are unable to upgrade to that pad, but could substitute a lesser quality pad. He also then stated that my bid didn't include the cost for the stair installation - again, never were we told there would be a different price for stair installation - it was supposed to just be included in the square foot price we were quoted. So, the new bid had a lesser quality pad AND included an additional cost for installation labor on stairs that wasn't initially disclosed. I responded, noting that this needs to be resolved as I didn't want to have to involve the BBB. At that point, I was stonewalled by Jim and his manager, Darin. They refused to work with me and told me that my wife and I could take our business elsewhere. I even offered to split the difference in cost on the upgraded pad! I should have just taken my business to a completely different company, but curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to see if I would get the same response from another Advance Carpet One store. So, I went to the South County store on Kennerly Road. There, I talked to Jake and was completely upfront about the situation. I told him that we thought we were promised a free pad, Jim Mers refused to honor it, we requested resolution so as to avoid unnecessary escalation (i.e., a bad yelp review and a BBB complaint), they refused. So, here we are. Jake's response? "Why don't I just take off the pad for you, will that work?" YES! So, Jake wrote up the quote as we originally negotiated, signed it, ran my credit card, and placed the order. Jake was great. About 30 minutes after Jake entered our order, I received a call from Jim Mers. They cancelled our order. He didn't like that I "went behind his back" and "told a sob story" to another sales associate at a different store. So, he and his manager decided to cancel our entire order. I then went to talk to Jim in person to explain my frustration as well as the consequences for the customer service we had received (yelp review, BBB complaint, etc.) I wanted to give them one last chance to make it all right. He refused to talk to me civilly, and even threatened to call the cops....at which point I made a prompt exit! Holy cow, this was beyond bizarre - I've never had an experience like this at any store, ever. UPDATE: Today, we received a call from Advance Carpet One's regional manager. He expressed his disappointment in how the situation was handled and profusely apologized that it wasn't handled better. He offered to resolve the issue by honoring the original deal we thought we were getting. We declined, having decided to take our business elsewhere, but we appreciated the gesture.
Description of Work: Failed to honor their verbal promise of a free pad upgrade. However, after it was escalated to the regional manager, he contact us to try to resolve. By that point, we decided to take our business elsewhere, but we appreciated the gesture.

They didn't get back to us, and it seemed like they were giving us the run around.
Description of Work: They came out and measured our home for laminate flooring that we purchased from them. They gave use 50% more product than we needed and charged use for the extra. I tried to call the company to get a refund and they said all we would have to pay is a re-stalking fee. By the time they called me back it was too late to get a refund.

The customer purchased this material in September 2014. There were no services performed, this was a material only sale. They informed us in March 2015 that after they had performed other work in their home that they now did not like the look/color of one of the products they purchased. We can not get credit for material from the manufacturer 5 months after purchase. The manufacturer will not take it back at that point. We are sorry they did not like one of the products they purchased and had they inquired about a return within a reasonable amount of time, we would have been able to accommodate their request. We did measure at customers request to confirm the measurements they had already taken. The bulk of the purchase (85%) was of one product, and that was used entirely. It was the remaining 15% of product that was a different style and color that they inquired about returning. We have documentation that we checked with the manufacturer on trying to return this and their response that they could / would not since it had been so long. We were not trying to give the customer the "run around", we simply could not give them the answer that they were looking for.

The salesperson Gwen is very nice and worked closely with us before and after the purchase. We shopped around and obtained estimates from 4 different providers and I am very satisfied we picked Advance. The installers were amazing. This was a huge 2 day undertaking and the installers made it look like a walk in the park. We have a lot of furniture and I thought it would be a challenge to move some of it. But not with these guys. The installers lead by Ramon, have the art of moving furniture down to a science.

Everything went exactly as explained. The salesman explained alot about carpet to match the carpet to our needs. We bought the carpert up front for an area being refinished. They kept the carpet some additional time to meet our timetable. The installer was very experienced and easy to work with, The carpet seems to be just what we had anticipated. I'm very happy with the results.

When the carpet was delivered to the store, they called and set up an appointment. We removed books, breakables. pictures, lamps, etc, from the rooms. They came in and moved all of the heavy furniture, tore up the old carpet, laid pads and then carpet. They even extended the carpet into the closets. They removed the old carpet. When done, they moved all furniture back and offered us any carpet pieces that were leftover. They were very polite and professional. I would use them again.
Description of Work: We selected carpet for two rooms. They let us take the samples home with us and arranged to come out the next day to measure and pick up the samples. The salesman was prompt and professional.

I choose Advance knowing nothing about them except for Angies List. This was a small project that kept being pushed back until I just wanted it done.. Advance has an unbelievable and overwhelming number of beige carpets. This was not a warm and fuzzy experience, certainly no sales pressure. They really didn't seem to care if I bought anything, my salesman somehow disappeared, the carpet came in later than expected. Sounds bad? The carpet was the perfect choice. They sent a crew of 3 for this little job and they were on time, polite, fast working, efficient, and did a wonderful job. They were good about moving the furniture carefully which included a TV set with cable connections and even made sure that the TV was working when they plugged it in . They had no problem taking the old carpet to the basement and putting it in place. I couldn't be more pleased.

I chose Advanced Carpet because of 3 reasons: 1. They were originally a St Louis company and are not a big box store 2. They are on Angie's List 3. Their Beautiful Guarantee which states: "We want you to be 100% happy that the flooring you have chosen is as beautiful as the one in your dreams. If not, we will replace it for free. That's what we call the 'Beautiful Guarantee'. We are that confident." This guarantee is featured prominently in the stores and on their website. This comprehensive guarantee gave me confidence that I would have recourse if the job did not turn out well. As soon as I saw the final installation I told the installers I was not happy as the seams were very visible and peaked, meaning they did not lie flat. The 3 seams are very apparent in any light. The installers called the store and told them I was unhappy with the installation and the way the seams stood out. The installer said he would have run the seam another direction but the carpet was precut and he had no option. A supervisor came by the next day and subsequently an "investigator" hired by the store came out to look at the seams. A large part of the problem is that the main long seam is running against the light that floods into the room from many windows. Also another type of carpet with a higher nap might have hidden the seam better. I was given no advice about the type of carpet and how a seam might show and I was not consulted about where the seams would be put in the room when the store manager came out to measure my rooms. When I called the store to tell them I was unhappy with the way the carpet seams showed up and peaked the manager told me they carpet was properly installed, and besides my carpet was not covered by the Beautiful Guarantee. I asked him what he meant and he said only some of their carpet was covered and mine was not. I told him I had not been told verbally or in writing at any point that my carpeting, which was approximately $7.25/square foot, for a total of nearly $5000, was not covered under the Beautiful Guarantee. He is now refusing to replace the carpet. He also states that the carpet I chose is not one they carry. When I originally shopped in the store the manager told me if I find something I like elsewhere to come back and they could match or better a price and order it for me. I brought him a sample of a carpet they didn't feature in that store location but he was able to order it right away. He never mentioned that the Beautiful Guarantee did not apply to my flooring. I would like the carpet replaced with a different carpet that is installed so the seams do not show up so badly, which can be done by running the seam under the bed. It also needs to be a higher nap. I believe a salesman with some experience and interest should have helped me pick a better choice for this room and should have discussed all the options for seam placement. (The carpet I had in that room previously showed no seams at all so i was not even concerned about seams when I ordered the carpet.) I also feel that now that I am unhappy they are claiming the carpet is not under the Beautiful Guarantee to avoid responsibility. If a flooring is not covered they should advise the customer in writing at the time of sale, which they did not do. I am also upset that the manager is being rude on the phone with me now. Update 3/15/13: 1. Warranty is offered by the carpet manufacturer for problems with wear or stain etc. That is not the same as Advanced Carpet's Beautiful Guarantee for satisfaction about the final look of the flooring including installation. Nothing was ever explained to me by the store manager about limitations of their Beautiful Guarantee and there are no disclaimers on the website where the Beautiful Guarantee is posted. 2. If a store can sell a customer a carpet then that is as good as having it in stock as far as I am concerned. Many stores specially order items not shown in their showrooms. If they sell it they are responsible for what they sell. The manager did not say a word about the carpet I ordered not being covered under their Beautiful Guarantee. There is no disclaimer on my sales receipt. 3. The manager did not discuss how the seams would look in my room and give me an option to purchase more carpet for a better look. He measured the room and should have told me the seams would be less noticeable if run with the light, instead of against it. He did not do so. As a supposed carpet expert he should also have advised me that a carpet with a different weave would hide a seam better. He gave me no advice and was in a big hurry. My goal was not to sacrifice the appearance of the carpeting to save some money! 4. Advanced Carpet has not offered me any solutions such as giving me the carpet at cost. I asked the manager to get back with me about some remediation to the problem and he has not called me. 5. I stopped payment on the rest of the carpet until I could get this problem resolved. I figured I was unlikely to get attention for my problem unless they had not been fully paid. 6. It is not surprising that the inspector agreed with them since Advanced hired him. He told me himself that the seams would have looked much less noticeable if the seam had gone with the light. The way it was installed there are 3 seams, there could have been one. 7. The carpet I bought from Advanced with was about $63 per square yard, not a cheap carpet, and definitely in the range of carpeting/flooring covered under the Beautiful Guarantee. 8. I am willing to negotiate a reasonable resolution to this problem if Advanced will contact me. Otherwise I am taking my complaint to the Better Business Bureau and State's Attorney General. Update 7/13/2013 My experience with this company was very stressful and unpleasant. The carpet originally installed (nearly $5000 worth at about $7.50/sq foot) was installed in such a way that the seams stood out like sore thumbs. They did not advise me or consult me about the seam placements and when I complained about the unacceptable look they told me that the "Beautiful Guarantee" I saw advertised on their website and all over the store did not apply to my carpet, despite the high cost of my carpeting. After months of dispute and filing complaints with my credit card, Angie's List and the BBB the General Manager Darren Kustra called me and offered to replace the carpet if I agreed to pay for the installation ($500). After many delays the carpet was finally installed, it is not the same quality as my original choice but it is fine. Mr. Kustra was pleasant and helped resolve a huge problem. My advice is if you think you have any guarantee at all on flooring with this company, get it in writing, don't think you have their Beautiful Guarantee (love the flooring or they will replace it) unless you have it written and highlighted on your invoice. Avoid the Kirkwood store, the manager was disinterested, disrespectful and hostile to me.
Description of Work: Installed carpet that was unacceptably installed. After many months of dispute and hassle, they put in new carpet after I paid additional installation costs.

Response from Advance Carpet One
To Whom It May Concern: We received the Angie’s List letter informing us of the complaint against us by the customer and we have spoken to her by phone and arranged an independent inspection at our expense of her flooring. (An independent inspector means they do not represent Advance Carpet One or the carpet manufacturer). The customer came into our Kirkwood showroom and our store manager, worked with her for quite some time on selecting carpeting for her home. They went over the warranty information on those selections and the salesperson was waiting for the customer to decide on her purchase. She brought in a sample from one of our competitors asking if we carried it. The customer was informed that we did not carry that style and color but we might be able to get it. She had decided that the competitors style and color was exactly what she wanted and could we beat that price if we could get the carpeting? Advance Carpet One was able to order it and we were able to beat the price she was quoted by laying the carpet out in the most economical manner. She was informed prior to ordering that the styles he had shown her from our showroom carried better warranties. When the installation was completed, the customer called in stating that she was unhappy with the seams. Our General manager went out and looked at her flooring. The seams were properly put together and the installation was done very well. This did not satisfy the customer, so at our expense, we sent out an independent inspector. He found nothing wrong with the quality of the carpeting nor the installation. He does mention in his report that he agrees with the layout of the seams for economic reasons. (report enclosed) To run the carpeting in the other direction as the customer requests in her complaint to Angie’s List would have required an additional 180sf of carpeting at an additional cost of $1260.00. We offered to work with her on the replacement of her carpeting by giving it to her at our cost, but she said that was unacceptable. Since this carpeting is not something we normally carry, it does not qualify for our “Beautiful Guarantee” which is posted in 5 locations in our showroom. The “Beautiful Guarantee” applies to our regular distributors at a specific level of purchase. We have replaced 12 customers carpeting in the last 2 years under the “Beautiful Guarantee”, so it is something we are prepared to honor under the terms and conditions set forth for it. The customer will not pay us for the completion of her carpeting. Her order totaled $4772.00 of which she gave us a down payment of $1772.00 leaving a balance due of $3000.00 at the time of installation which she is unwilling to pay. She also tried to reverse the down payment charge on her credit card. As for the customer wanting us to replace her flooring with “a carpet of the same quality, but a different nap” we don’t feel we are obligated to do so at this point as she brought us the sample stating “this is what I want”. We sold her what she stated she wanted and gave her a professional installation of that flooring. We have not been paid for the product she has on her floor and have incurred our own expenses trying to satisfy her. I do not believe we will come to a mutual agreement with this customer. Darren Kustra General Manager Advance Carpet One FINDINGS / CONCLUSIONS The customer expressed a concern with the visibility of the seams. These would include the seam joining the main master bedroom section to the filler section and the seam joining the entry area section to the main master bedroom section. The consumer was also concerned with a soiled spot, shading caused by foot traffic and a raised area just off of the hallway. There was evidence of shading along the seams in question, however this shading was not discernible from all angles. It should be noted that these seams do not run toward the natural light source as recommended by standards, however, based on the floor plan and economic use of material, it is this inspector’s opinion that the seams are positioned in the correct location. There was slight peaking at these seams. The peaking is related to force realignment during the stretching process; a natural phenomenon that can not be avoided. The directions of the light and the peaking at the seams have combined to create a variance in the reflection value of the yarn. As further evidence of a light reflection issue, I found that the shading did reverse itself on opposing sides of the seams. I also found that the shading was not evident in pictures where a flash was employed. There were no mechanical issues contributing to the visibility of these seams. The sections were straight and tight with no gapping or overlapping. There was no pile reversal attributed to this issue when paper/pencil testing was performed. I found no measureable inconsistencies in the pile height between sections and no subsequent variations in the perceived surface texture. I compared the hue, (the perception of two different colors on either side of the seam), and the value/dye saturation levels, (the perception that the same color was more dominant on one side of the seam) using the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists standard Gray Scale Rating. (The AATCC Gray Scale Rating is a nationally recognized comparison system to determine the extent of color or value differences.) Using this method of measurement I found only a slight inconsistency in the value measuring 4-5 from one angle only. All other angles measured 5, (no variance). Photographs have been provided for review. The shading from foot traffic is a characteristic of the style chosen and not a warranty issue unless otherwise stated. There was a small black spot in the carpet in the master bedroom just off of the entry area. This no longer can be considered as manufacturing related as the carpet has now been installed. In any case, proper cleaning should correct this concern. The raised area is with the installation and consistent with a variance in the subsurface. TO CONCLUDE: I find no evidence of a manufacturing related deficiency. These seams should be considered within the manufacturer’s tolerance based on the AATCC Gray Scale Rating which has been applied. The mechanics of the seams conform to industry standards. Shading due to light reflection is not a warranty issue. Subtle shading is inherent in a textile fabric and should be expected. CRI 105 Standards for Installation states specifically that no seam can be made to be invisible.
I am satisfied with their price and service, everything about them was excellent. I would recommend them to others.

The sales person was an older gentleman who was quite knowledgeable and had been in the carpet industry for 35-40 years. We felt comfortable talking to him about various types and colors of carpets. He came out to the house and measured. What I was really impressed with was that after it was installed he was very close with his measurements. We didn't pay for carpet that we didn't use. The installation was very efficient. It was done when they said it would be done. We were really happy with the service. He had good communication and was very accommodating. Excellent. Great service. Friendly. Professional.
Description of Work: I had a great experience at the show room. The manager was friendly and helpful. They usually provide estimates after sending someone to your home to measure. He provided an estimate based upon a diagram my husband provided with our own measurements. We both agreed if the installation required additional work that we would handle that then. No adjustments were needed. The carpet came in on time. The installers showed up on time and were professional, courteous and very concerned about quality. They even had to take a door off of it's hinges in order to install the carpet. Excellent job. We plan to use them for two additional rooms with carpet and one with wooden floors.

We didn't actually buy carpeting from this company. At least not at this time. We have in the past though, and very well might do so again in the next few years. We were considering replacing carpeting now but decided instead to have our old carpeting professionally cleaned. I spoke to a saleswoman at the Manchester store in mid August, 2011 and got an estimate for whole house carpeting. I liked the quality of Evans Black carpeting (actually made by Gulistan mills) and the price of a particular style. This saleswoman answered technical questions and/or called to reps. to get the information I wanted. I found her very helpful and knowledgeable. I will not use her name but I note that in another Angie's List review someone faults her for being lax in responding to them and, if I remember correctly, for canceling an appointment. I specifically asked her about that. The incident, according to her, not only involved family illness, but the death of her father. One should obviously be a little tolerant of this sort of thing. The 16-year old carpeting that we had professionally cleaned came from Advance Carpet One also.. It is high-face-weight carpeting that has held up nicely over the years. So, in general, I/we have a favorable impression of the company even though I have read that it buys and uses brand names in ways that some disapprove of.
Description of Work: We got an estimate for whole house carpeting from a saleswoman at the Manchester store. We exchanged e-mails thereafter in which some technical information was offered about the carpeting. The saleswoman was very generous with her time and very helpful.

The installers were very professional and did an excellant job. The installation took about seven workdays. Walking around the house was never an issue. The installers made sure we always had a path to walk on. About 15 months after the installation, we discovered a water leak. The plumber determined the leak was due to a nail that hit the water line when the installers replaced the baseboards. Advance Carpet promptly reimbursed us for the plumbing costs. One tile did crack (a U-shaped cutout at a doorway) and it was replaced at no cost to us. We are extremely happy with the flooring and would definitely use their services again.
Description of Work: Ceramic tile was installed in the kitchen, laundry room, breakfast room, hallway and one bath.

!As previously stated, our first encounter with Advance Carpet which was satisfactory, was not reported since we were not members of Angie's list at the time. Unfortunately, the second time around they dropped the ball.
Description of Work: We visited the Advance Carpet One showroom to look at carpet for three rooms in our home. After we made some sample selections to take home to try, Jasmine made an appointment to come to our home on March 15th. She measured the areas to be recarpeted and since the color of the samples we had were too dark, she made an appointment to return with additional samples. On the day of her appointment a gentleman from Advance Carpet called to say she could not come due to a family illness and would call us to reschedule. We heard nothing from her or anyone else at Advance Carpet for the next three weeks. In the meantime we looked at other carpeting and due to apparent disinterest of Advance Carpet decided to purchase from another company. We had laminated flooring installed by Advance Carpet in the past (in 2009 before I belonged to Angie's list). At that time their sales staff was helpful and responsive, quality of flooring available was very good and they were prompt in measuring the area and placing the order. The existing Pergo was removed and taken away, new flooring installed. Unfortunately in the initial installation a defective board was installed which we noticed after the installer had left for the day. The company sent out someone to replace the defective board within a week, however, this was not successful as a corner of the replacement board cracked so they tried a second time and this failed as well. Finally they sent two installers (who they said were their "best") and they removed approximately 8 feet of flooring from the defective board to the end of the room and replaced everything, replaced some endcaps the first installer had done saying they were "sloppy". The time from placement of the order for the flooring in August to the final correction of installation problems the first week of December was long, but eventually the outcome was excellent and we were pleased with the result. We were quite disappointed that on the most recent encounter with Advance Carpet they were so unresponsive.

Service was great. I am picky about carpet and wanted a very dense cut pile carpet and the sales staff was great. Measurements were taken quickly and the installers were excellent and the carpet looks great.
Description of Work: Purchased carpet/pad/installation for three bedrooms, hallway and family room.

It went very well. Very well pleased with the sales person, the selection and layout at the store, the carpet, the installation, and the installation team. I recommend them.
Description of Work: I bought carpet for a new office in my basement and had it installed.
They came out and measured everything. They went through everything and told me what they were going to do. They told me what needed to be replaced and what not. They came out the next day and cut a sample of my hardwood floor so that they could match it. So they are in the process of ordering it now.
Description of Work: I received an estimate from Advance Carpet One in the last week for new hardwood flooring and carpeting work. I also want new laminates to be installed for my kitchen as well as bedroom floors. The carpet installation is for the stairs, my bedroom and down the hall.

We won't go back to them. They sold me flooring that should have never been sold for a kitchen because if you drop a scissor on it, it will leave a dent or it cuts it. I have all these marks and dents all over my kitchen floor. I wrote to the manager and also called and never got a response back. I wrote them off my list of whom I will go back to. I don't think they should have sold that flooring to us. The installers were fine, but the floor was not.
Description of Work: We used Advance Carpet One to install a new laminate kitchen floor.

The gentleman whom I bought the carpets from has now retired. I have no problems with the quality or the installation of the carpeting. In order to honor their warranty, you are supposed to have your carpeting cleaned and shampooed every two years which I thought was silly. I got to know this from him. I have nothing negative to say about them.
Description of Work: I bought carpets from Advance Carpet One.
