Carpentry on the Level is a small business that offers a wide variety of repair and remodeling services for homes and businesses. Estimates are free and will separate costs for materials from labor costs. For most jobs, payment is expected when the job is finished. For large jobs lasting several weeks, we may negotiate a weekly payment plan as the work progresses. Checks or cash only are accepted. We have been in business for ten years and have over 20 years of experience. This is primarily a one man business with helpers as needed. We do not subcontract but can refer the customer to other resources to cover what we can't. Just call and let us know what you need done .

Jim was professional and friendly to work with. He came out to take a look at our project and gave me an estimate for the labor. We wanted a half wall in the stairwell to the basement removed and the stairs fixed up to be more secure as some were wobbly. It took a bit longer to get the work done because of the holidays and some family issues, but Jim let me know when he was available and came out the next day. It was a fairly easy project, and one we potentially could have done ourselves if we had the time and know-how, but overall it was worth the small expense to have Jim come fix it in one day.

We called him for a bid. He came out and gave us the bid. Then he told us it would be 4-6 weeks, we called again and it would be 2 weeks and he has never come.
Description of Work: He came out and gave us a bid and never returned. I have always wondered why contractors pull this. Why can't they just say "i don't want the job" and leave so you can find someone else

Response from Carpentry on the Level
We apologize for the delay and can appreciate your frustration. It is extremely difficult to estimate exactly how long a job will take and the larger the job, the more challenging it is to plan. Jim just completed the large job he was working on and then needed to take a break to go see his mother in Minnesota when she broke her leg. He is just now getting the next jobs set up and had planned to contact you soon. He can get you on his schedule for just after Christmas if you are still interested. If you choose to find someone else, we understand. When you are a one man operation there is no one to cover when you have to be gone. Please note that we will not have any internet access (or email access) between December 19 and 30.

We tried to get an estimate for work on our kitchen ceiling. He came out and was very nice, and promised to send us an estimate for the work we wanted. He never sent it. I followed up the next week with a call, left a message one night, didn't hear from him, and then tried to call again the next day. He apologized for not contacting us sooner, and told me he didn't think he could do the project the way we'd discussed it, and explained why. I asked him if he could do plain sheetrock on our ceiling, and he said that would be no problem, and he'd send me a bid right away. Never heard from him again.

See above. I did purchase the fixtures myself so they were ready to go when he arrived. He would have brought the fixtures with him If I wanted that.
Description of Work: I wanted someone to help adapt a bathroom in a 1980's house to accommodate a frail elder. Grab bars, a higher toilet, and a handicapped accessible shower were needed. I also live on the east coast, and was trying to time the work to happen during a visit to the KC area. Jim was very responsive by phone and by email at a distance, and he quickly found time to meet when I arrived to give me an estimate. His pricing was more than fair. More importantly, he carefully identified the location of studs, and knew a great deal about the options for anchors. He was experienced enough in plumbing to do the installation I needed and to avoid the probable location of pipes to the prevent damage to the home's systems. Jim was very prompt and called 5 minutes before he was due to notify me he would be 20 minutes late. He was neat and precise doing the work and cleaned up completely. He was friendly, polite, and personable. He really seemed to understand the challenge of helping care for a relative from a distance. I will definitely call him again when we need further work, and I recommend him to friends without hesitation.

He was really good. He was really quick about his response and he came right away. It was a Wednesday or Thursday and he was out on a Saturday. He came when he was supposed to.
Description of Work: I used Carpentry on the Level to hammer in the baseboards because I had a flood in my baseboard. It was just minor repair stuff that I couldn't do myself. They made sure the baseboard was level to the wall.
