We were impressed with Scott's (the owner of Horizontal Earthworks) professional attitude from the outset of this project. After contacting him, he made an appointment to meet us at our site and he arrived exactly on time. He listened to the plans for the project as we outlined them and within a few days submitted detailed plans along with the estimated cost. We decided to revise the original plan and he again visited the site and came up with details for the revised plan within a matter of a few days. Once we signed the contract, Scott had his crew here at the agreed upon time and began work. The entire project was completed within approximately 7 workdays and was done exactly according to plan. Scott's crew was efficient and respectful of our property--once they completed their work each day, they tidied up the worksite and left no materials or tools strewn around our property. Importantly, the lines of communication between Scott and ourselves was superb. He always let us know when tasks would be accomplished and if we had any questions, he answered promptly. We would not hesitate to hire Horizontal Earthworks for future projects and recommend the company without reservation.

I made the unfortunate mistake of hiring Horizontal Earthworks for landscaping work on my property. For the amount of money that I paid them to have the work done ($3800), I assumed that I was hiring a team of professional landscapers. Instead, I was surprised to find out that Horizontal Earthworks employs a group of very low wage college students that spend as much time standing around goofing off (I was able to record them on my Ring security camera) as they do working, often entirely unsupervised. Of course, the supervisor, Becky, when she is on the job site, is incredibly slow, this is perhaps due to the fact that she frequently stops working and checks her Facebook status on her cell phone, which I observed her doing on several occasions. Thankfully, I did NOT hire Horizontal Earthworks to install a backyard patio. The owner (Scott Mayer) gave me a quote on a patio installation ($6500) that was more than double the price of other companies (average $3000). Scott told me that it would take 4-5 days to complete the job...I hired another contractor who completed the job in a little over one day.

Great. Paver styles has changed since original install of gazebo/pathway. They went above and beyond in tracking down some of the border blocks to use to transition from the old to the new. Makes the backyard so much more cohesive as not a plain "concrete" driveway pad but ties in with 20 year old gazebo patio we did. Did have a spot that settled right away and wasn't draining off water as well. Was concerned for when winter came and would ice (which it did in 2019). They came quickly and watered so could see the areas and reset. Was perfect and no issues during winter.

Went well They came at the appointed time and worked steadily until it was finished. They did the job as requested.

Working with Horizontal Earthworks was a great experience. Frank E. was on time or called ahead. We communicated easily; he listened to what we had in mind, & made good suggestions when asked for ideas. The crew worked quickly & neatly & there was a supervisor there at all times. They dug a trench & added materials on which to lay the bricks, edging them with supports so the walkway will be more stable & last a long time. They added top soil before laying the sod which has helped with water drainage. We are very pleased with the final results! We would rehire them for future needs & recommend them highly.

Very smoothly considering being slowed by weather. Small crew was very efficient and "tolerant" of questions from homeowner. Very accommodating.

We had a terrible drainage problem in our backyard with standing water constantly rendering our backyard useless. We couldn’t even mow our grass. I contacted Horizontal Earthworks through the Angie’s List website e-mail and Scott promptly replied and set up an appointment to come up with solutions and give an estimate. The estimate was in writing and was reasonable for the amount of work we needed done. In less than two days time Scott and his team completely transformed our backyard. Using a bobcat, Scott created a swale and berms to better control and direct surface water. Next, they installed a large underground drainage tank on one end of the yard connected to a french drain with three surface water catch basins spaced along the length of our yard. Lastly, new topsoil was applied, the yard was graded smooth, and new sod was installed. It was quite amazing to watch my yard transform from a swamp to a nice green inviting space. Now when it rains we can look down through the small yard grate of a catch basin and see the water flowing nicely underground in the french drain from one end of our yard to the other. No more pooling of water on the surface creating a muddy mess. It seemed to me that the crew at Horizontal Earthworks functioned together as a well-organized team. Everyone on the team was polite, informative and focused on getting the job done right and on schedule. Scott provided excellent communication from start to finish and even contacted me days later after the first time it rained to see if I was pleased with the outcome. I would recommend Horizontal Earthworks to anyone who needs some serious drainage and landscaping work.

Becky and her team did a terrific job. They used a small bobcat to move the pavers from the cul-de-sac out front to our backyard. They took a panel out of our fence for ease of moving materials but were careful to put the panel back when the job was completed. They used the crushing machine (sorry I don't remember what it's called!) to crush the limestone base. They were meticulous about using the surveying tripod (I'm sure it has a name too) to make sure it was lining up just right (and allowing for a little slope). They spent awhile checking how level everything was as they laid pavers. They obviously did okay as we have had lots of rain since the job was completed and we haven't noticed big puddles settling on the patio. They also helped with placing a long plastic drain tube going from the gutter underneath the deck to drain out away from the patio. And they helped to replace some broken lattice work with plastic lattice under the deck. They moved a lot of our extra dirt from the job over to the north side of our house to create a slope along that side for draining purposes. Finally, they laid sod around the finished patio. Scott then came by and checked to see that it was up to his standards as well. They completed the job in roughly 3 days. It is such an improvement to the space that was there before! We are very pleased and would highly recommend Horizontal Earthworks.

Scott was very up front and honest, and was true to his estimate of the work. His crew was hard-working, courteous, and professional. Everything he did for us turned out great. I'll use him any time I need some landscaping work.

Scott and crew replaced a huge, old crumbling rock wall with a beautiful new retaining wall, cleared out trees and brush, and created a small yard where previously there was only rock, roots, and a little dirt! I got several bids from local companies, and Scott seemed by far the most competent and caring of my wishes. He incorporated my "vision" and added his own expertise, and I am thrilled with the outcome. Very professional and straight-forward, and his crew is also courteous and hardworking. The job was finished in 7 days as scheduled and the end result exceeded my expectations. I will definitely use Horizontal Earthworks again and I've already referred them to friends & family. I'm having a blast planting flowers in my new back yard!

They did a quick, excellent job. There were three people plus the supervisor that I contracted with. They completed the wall in three days. They were very precise when we talked about exactly where we wanted the wall as well as the color and shape. We got exactly what we wanted. They had torn up a lot of the lawn while setting the bricks, but they brought in about 30-40 sq ft of grass sod and re-did the lawn right in front of the wall, so it looked like the wall had been there forever.

I was very happy with their work and they performed quite fine. The owner did a lot of the work and he was very competent and friendly. He did a good job. He was here when he said and he got done when he said.

They were great. Scott was very good about keeping in contact regarding status of the job. I was in a time crunch and they worked me in very quickly. They did what they said, when they said they would do it and it looked great. I plan to use them again.

We were very happy with the work. Scott and a few helpers did the work off and on for 2-3 days working around the weather. Scott over saw the work but was not there the entire time. He even gave us an Angie's List discount of 5%. We had the work done to eliminate moisture and water from the basement, the work done has helped this and we are still working with Scott to hopefully fully eliminate moisture.

Scott and his crew were punctual, courteous, thorough and careful throughout the process. Scott was onsite during the majority of the installation, called to follow up on my satisfaction and also came by after the project to review the work with me personally. Scott takes great pride in the services he provides and is extremely detailed to ensure that the final product meets expectations. He is trustworthy and always returns phone calls, which was very appreciated. I would recommend and/or use him again anytime I have a project that meets his expertise in the future.

Scott was great at keeping in contact and letting us know where we were on the calendar. He kept us informed of options and prices on each option and came out for a site visit the day before work began. He even called to let me know the date and time window for the utility marking worker. When I came home early and unannounced on the day work was being completed, Scott was there along with the crew. The work was done is less than two days. They even removed some old metal poles in the back yard for no additional cost. We made a last minute decision to add sod because of weather conditions, which was completed the next morning and at a price adjusted for ease of installation since they had just graded the area. They even salvaged the steps from our old deck to allow us to continue to use the back door while we were on a waiting list for a builder of the new deck. Scott and his crew did quick, quality work. Scott called me after each step of the project was completed and asked me to look over the work before paying the rest of the balance. He even checked in a week later to see how the sod was holding up. From now on, I will call Scott for my trees and landscaping needs.

We contacted Scott in early June just after we had experienced flooding in our basement after unusually heavy rains. He came out soon after to give us a proposal to divert runoff away from the house. He projected that it would be August before he could get to our job, which was fine with us. On the scheduled day, four workers arrived around 9:30 and worked nonstop until the project was finished. Scott came later in the day to inspect and give more instructions. At the end of the day, we had a swale cut across the yard, a downspout directed into a French drain, dirt mounded up against the foundation and covered with landscape fabric, and a retaining wall rebuilt and enlarged to form a detention basin. The machine that was used to carry rock and soil made many trips across the yard and pretty well destroyed the grass in its path, but that was unavoidable. There was no mess to clean up afterwards. I later seeded the swale area with grass and will plant other things in the detention area next spring. I covered the landscape fabric next to the foundation with rock. We have had only one heavy rain since the work was done, and no water came into the basement, but that wasn't a conclusive test. We have had flooding only 3 or 4 times in 15 years in this house, so we may have to wait a while to get a real test. We think that the landscaping will probably solve the problem.

This was phase one of the plan. Do to weather and changes I made to phase two we ran out of good weather. I am currently working with Scott and plans to start back up in the next couple of weeks. I will follow up with another review when project is completed.

There are 3 guys who all have their own jobs. They are great to work with. I brought out pictures and showed Scott, the owner, what I liked. He quickly returned with a complete design that was perfect and even better than what I had suggested. I changed my mind a couple of times throughout the process. I pretty much let him have free run for most of it so it was mostly completely his design. It started with a failing wall and a water issue and I now have a beautiful water feature as the focal point in my backyard. They have put in extra hours when they have needed to to complete the work on a timeline. They have fantastic workmanship. They focus more on hardscaping than landscaping, but they directed me to someone for landscape design. She came out and designed all of my beds. They have done everything and more that I have asked. They installed what I thought would be a simple rock wall but it has turned into a neighborhood phenomenon that has all of the neighbors starting to landscape their yard.

The job was done in a timely manner. Considering the scope of the project and horrible heat, the guys never slwed down. They kept plugging away till it was complete.
