UMKC Swinney Recreation Center

I have been a memeber of the Rec center for 5 years and facility is great. They have any type of equipment you could want along with an indoor track, outdoor track, basketball courts and several classes you can take. The classes do cost extra but they ar discounted for memebers and are very reasonable. The over monthly cost is also extrememly reasonable. Parking can be a challenge at certain times since it is a college campus but you can purchase a parking pass that helps at a resonable cost. I wish their hours were a bit more extended but that isn't enough to warrant not using this great facility. The cost is extremly reasonable and I love that it is supporting the college in my neighborhood.

I gave them a D in communication because they don't tell you before you join that you cannot use all the equipment with your membership. Certain rooms and equipment are "special" use and you have to pay extra for using them. When you check in they always ask "where are you going".... "to the gym"... DUH! I've never asked if I'm supposed to go back up there and tell them if I leave one room and go into another. It's on the expensive side for the amount of time open; lack of classes (unless you pay extra) and the "off limits" area's/equipment. I'm on the fence about "using this provider again because it's so close to my office I can go on my lunch hour without travel time; on the other hand there are other facilities around the city that don't ask stupid "where are you going" questions, offer classes for those of us who like them, and give you access to all equipment.

Excellent gym. Indoor/outdoor pool. Large work out area with many machines, elliptical, and stationary bikes. They have specialized fitness classes and massage therapy. Clean facilities and showers.

I highly recommend the Swinney Recreation Center for people looking for a good gym. I normally use the fitness center, where they have cardio machines, weight machines and free weights. They do an excellent job of assuring that all the machines are recent models and all are in excellent condition. I also use the swimming pool, sauna and steam room occasionally. The dressing rooms are very comfortable and the lap pool is great. It's especially nice that they can pull back the outside wall so in the summer you can sit outside if you want. I don't use the track myself, but there are always people running around it indoors and outdoors. The Swinney Recreation Center also has some of the nicest, most competent staff members you could imagine. These are folks who are in the phys ed program at UMKC. They're committed to fitness, they're polite and helpful, and it's a pleasure spending time with them in the morning. In the morning, it's never so crowded that I have any trouble getting on a machine. Same is true on weekends. The place is a hidden gem, so don't tell anyone and spoil it for me, okay?

It's on the University of Missouri, Kansas City campus. They have a fitness center with cardio and weight equipment. I use it in the winter and summer. Sometimes I hang out by their pool. We can take classes and we do have access to personal trainers. They are affiliated with the UMKC educational program for physical education. I pay them monthly. Their price is great. It's a great environment. They've got students as well as community members from UMKC. The back office of the college is not all that pretty. Anyone from the community is welcome to join. It's really amazing. There are 24-hour fitness centers, but this is not one of them. It's really an incredible facility with great staff. It's always clean, well organized and maintained.
