It turned out wonderful. They put a concrete landscaping border around the majority of my house. It was excellent. The owner is called Scott. He is very responsive and personable. He kept in touch with us during the interval time, which we appreciated. There was a delay to get started because of our needs. When it was time to do the work they were there quickly. They did a good job preparing the yard for the work and completed it without any mess. They did it all in one day. I was shocked, amazed and very appreciative. In addition, we continue to work with Scott to get additional landscape completed. We like him well enough to stick with him!

I think I covered it above.
Description of Work: We had edging put in in 2009. The wait is long as they try to combine jobs in the same area. Edging is a good product. They are good sale people upfront but not difficult to deal with if you have a problem. In 2010 we bought a fountain. We preformed all the steps to prepare the fountain for winter as instructed by Sharper Edge. Covered it with a Sharper Edge fountain cover. In the spring we discovered the fountain base was broken. Spoke with Scott, sent them pictures. Scott told me the company would be able to tell by the pictures why the base broke. Of course, they said it had water in it and would not replace it. A new base cost us $64, we needed a new pump which was over $200. With delivery and installation our cost was $368, they wanted over $400 but I refused. We could have almost bought a new fountain. It took several weeks to get an answer from them about the base of the fountain, then we had to wait again for the pump kit, then wait for them to have a job in this area or there would be a fuel charge. It is frustrating working with Scott after you have commited to Sharper Edge. We would not recommend them. Im sure there are other Paving companies. I woudl check them out first. And absolutely, I would never by another fountain from them.

Response from The Sharper Edge
To begin our response it is relevant to let you know that although I (Scott) am referenced by name in this complaint, the customer has not elevated the complaint to me directly and has only interacted with our store general manager, whom she does not name. Until today I was unaware that the customer was not happy and was given no forum to smooth the situation over. The review is misleading because it was posted on 7/21/11 and the Work Completed date she has entered is May 23rd, 2009. To set the record straight, the member's acknowledge “We had edging put in in 2009. The wait is long as they try to combine jobs in the same area. Edging is a good product. They are good sale people upfront but not difficult to deal with if you have a problem”. (Incorrect grammar copied from her review). To clarify, these negative comments relate to a service order placed this Spring 2011 on a fountain purchased at our retail store in June 2010, and have nothing to do with the concrete edging work we did in 2009. They have referred us to many of their neighbors who are also very satisfied with our work, so it seems a bit disingenuous to now state that they would not recommend us. Although the major details of this review are accurate she is missing most of the crucial details which define the circumstances. Issue #1: On 4/27/11 we received a call from the members asking for a service call to replace the “pump” in their fountain. We were told that a contractor had, through careless smoking, accidentally started a fairly substantial fire in the landscape mulch and that the cord to the pump was burned, resulting in the need to replace the “pump”. Obviously this is not a warranty issue but we ordered a replacement pump. A second issue (covered in issue#2 below was also discussed) A few weeks later the pump and replacement basin were received from the manufacturer. On 5/23/11 we dispatched a two man crew in a service truck and made the 30 minute drive to their home. When our crew arrived they told us that they would like to relocate the fountain to a different place. We obliged and moved and leveled the concrete pad to the new area. Upon further inspection, we found that they had not bothered to tell us that every component of the fountain including all tubing, the LED light kit, fittings, clamps diverters etc, had also been destroyed in the fire. Remember, we were told to replace a “pump”. Our trip was completely redundant because all of the inner workings of the fountain were gone. We advised that the full service kit would have to be ordered. Total labor for the day was almost 4 man hours plus 40 miles on our truck and fuel. We left and ordered the replacement parts at a cost of $122.00 (our cost, not the $200 she claims) and even paid the shipping for the member. Had we replaced the pump only the cost would have been $59.99 plus labor. Issue #2 During that same call on 4/27/11 they advised us that they had a crack in the bottom basin which comprises roughly 2/3 of the cost of the fountain. As is protocol, we asked them to email a picture of the defect which we forwarded on to the manufacturer for warranty review. It was obvious to anyone in the statuary industry that this was not a shrink crack or manufacturing defect. The photo they provided showed a severe hydraulic crack which was opened up nearly ¼ of an inch along the full height of the basin. This kind of crack is only caused by water left in a fountain and allowed to freeze. As the ice expands its force is immeasurable and will almost always break the piece. It is notable that although it is our reputation she wishes to defile, it was actually the manufacturer who denied the claim. Although we agree with the decision the Manufacturer made, it was not ours to make. Under the circumstances and given that the memberswere old and valued customers (we thought), and felt empathy for their situation, we ordered the replacement basin at a cost of $124 to us. We subsequently discounted the item 50% and billed them $62 and ate the other $62 internally. Another detail she neglects to mention. Her claim that it took several weeks to receive the replacements is accurate. It took roughly 3-4 weeks for us to receive the parts in an industry that typically ships in 4-6 weeks. The full pump kit arrived at our store on or around 6/9/11. She also claims that it took several weeks for us to get the work scheduled. Not true. Her comments that we “had to wait again for the pump kit, then wait for them to have a job in this area or there would be a fuel charge”; what we told her is that we would be working for a neighbor across the street in a few days, and that if they could wait, we would save additional labor and fuel charges associated with making a dedicated trip to their home. We installed the pump kit less than one week later on 6/16/11 free of charge in conjunction with a neighbor’s concrete project across the street. Although they obviously do not appreciate my attempt to save them money, we did. Originally we were told by the members that the crack was a defect and that the fountain did not have water in it. Only when we determined that it was ice damage did she begin to suggest that it did have water in it and that our fountain cover leaked and that is why the fountain was full of water (a detail she originally denied), We have sold hundreds of these covers and never once have we had a return, or a complaint that they leak. The reason for that is that they don’t leak. To summarize: All of the problems with this situation have to do with the neglect and incompetence of the customer. We did not set the fountain on fire and we did not add water to the fountain in the dead of winter. 1. We broke even or took a loss on every component replacement part we installed for them. We picked up all shipping costs associated with their replacements. 2. We discounted our labor rates 24% (without her asking us too) 3. Provided more than 6 labor hours and truck mileage for $95.00. Our regular rate is $65/hour. Quite a discount. 4. In the end all of this was done at a substantial net loss to our company to keep a happy customer. With the exception of one piece, this entire fountain, $495 retail, was replaced during 2 separate trips because they failed to communicate the real issues and what was required to remedy the situation. It could have been remedied in a single trip in roughly 2 hours had they communicated the extent of the damage. UPDATE: 7/22/11: Ironically, only one day after posting their negative comments on Angie’s List, the member just came into our store ranting that his fountain was not running right again and that the flow of water had slowed. They seem to refuse to learn how to take care of the piece and want us to do it all for free. If he had actually read the care instructions we provided he would know that the pump has algae in it from lack of proper maintenance and care and cleaning. If he were to clean the pump as required the fountain would be running correctly. We did everything we knew how to do to alleviate the pain of an unfortunate set of circumstances; however they are too angry to see that. Good luck.

They were very prompt in coming out for the estimate. They gave us a fair estimate and stuck to it. They actually did some extra work that wasn't included in the contract; they got rid of some weeds. It took quite a while to get an estimate, but once the work was agreed to, they did it punctually.

His was very personable doing what he said he would do. He explained what we needed to do to get ready. We had some edging poured before by another company. This company sprayed where the inside of the edging would be to help get rid of the grass and make it easier to build the edge. As a bonus they didn't charge us extra for this additional procedure. The other company that we previously used didn't do this extra step. One of the problems that I have with this company is that they won't take on small projects. This job was done in conjunction with a neighbor having some work being done at the same time. That's how we got this work done at this time.
