PHILLIPS PAVING

Wes McGowen was Sales Manager. Listed millings for $100/load. Asked for price if took all 120 loads. Wes replied $60/load. We signed contract. Received 40 loads on Tues/Wed last week. Today received an email he got a better offer for the millings, and he would not honor the contract he sent us and we signed. I reached out via text. He confirmed email. I asked about contract: his response - "So you are saying you won't pay us for what we delivered?" I immediately called him to see what was going on to understand his response he just sent. He said "Oh, I apologize, I assumed you guys wouldn't pay for what we delivered." I asked, "How did you come to that conclusion from me asking about our contract we signed?". I asked about contract we signed. He said was business decision because he make way more money with the new customer. He said we have the obligation to not pay for what he delivered, and he really doesn't care if we do not pay as he will be making more money with the other option

They did a great job without making a mess of our grass and were very professional.

After receiving a bid on March 28 I was told that I should sign it and return it and they would get us on their scheduling board. I was told, "we haven't started sealcoating yet due to the colder temps at night. Josh Boswell does our scheduling for the sealcoating and he will call you once our sealcoating crew gets started. I would say sometime in May or June." I returned the signed proposal on March 29. As I hadn't heard anything, I sent an email on July 2, asking if they might have an update on scheduling. I never got a response.

Phillips Paving replaced our long asphalt driveway last year, but due to our own scheduling needs, the work had to be done after a series of summer rainstorms. As a result, unbeknownst to Phillips, the ground under our old driveway was very soft in several places. Once the driveway was finished, we discovered that large rain puddles would collect over those original soft spots, puddles that would stay for days. When we called Phillips about this, they came back promptly, at no charge, and added asphalt to those places to keep the puddles from forming. Their fixes worked, but the patches were still pretty visible. When we called them this year to see if anything could be done about this appearance issue, they came back promptly, reheated and smoothed the patches, and gave the entire driveway a fresh sealcoating. All this, again, at no charge. The driveway now looks great. Throughout, their managers and workers were friendly and easy to work with. Phillips clearly is a company that stands by its work, keeps its promises, and wants customers to be satisfied. We are very pleased with the result.

Couldn't be bothered to respond to our request to quote our long drive to repair and seal our asphalt drive.

I have three driveways at my house, approximately 4,000 sq. ft. in total area, and over the years they had all deteriorated. I knew that I would need to have some major work done with new asphalt, but there were several places where the drives transitioned to other surfaces - wooden walkways, concrete pads - to which they were level. Simply adding a new layer of asphalt everywhere would cause other problems. Phillips Paving had excellent reviews on Angie's List, so I asked them for an estimate. When I called to discuss it, Joe Cox, the estimator, told me that their plan was to first mill around the edges, that is, cut a groove in the old asphalt next to the walkways and concrete pads where needed, so that the whole area could then be overlaid with new asphalt and create a smooth level transition. I was looking forward to watching the work, but unfortunately, when the opportunity came, the timing was such that I was going to have to be out of town. Since I was uneasy about this, and I also wanted to discuss some drainage issues, not having been home when he did the estimate, Joe Cox came back to my house and we went over everything which they were planning to do. I then felt comfortable having the work done while I was gone. Still, I was a bit nervous driving down the street on my return wondering what I would find... I needn't have worried. The results were FABULOUS! The drives were beautiful!! They were level to all the transitional surfaces, there was no asphalt where there should not be asphalt, and my drainage concerns were all addressed. Over the next few days the neighbors came over to tell me about all the machinery which had been there, verified the milling of the edges, and said how much they liked the results. So I am very happy with my experience with Phillips Paving, and will definitely use them again.

It was great. They worked with me on scheduling, as much as weather would allow. I had a chance to walk through it with the foreman first and the guys who did the work were very friendly and worked efficiently to get it done. They left the job site clean.

No contract awarded yet, but response time from first call til receiving a detailed estimate was terrific I tried for months with another B rated vendor here and never even got the quote they repeatedly told me they would/had sent. Unfortunately my waiting for their promises made me lose the window to have the work done this year. Phillips will be strongly considered when I make my decision.

I was very impressed with the owner and his customer service. Do not have the money to have the driveway installed right now. Will utilize this company hopefully next summer.

Phillips graded the existing gravel to make an even sub-grade for the asphalt. Then they applied three inches of asphalt to our driveway. The area worked on was about 4925 Sq. feet. They were very professional. I plan to call them back to seal the driveway. I would recommend them to anyone.

Overall, an excellent outcome. Due to weather the start date was delayed a few times. But, was finally completed in one day and in a very prrofessional manner. I am already planning to have them seal the surface after a few months of settling. I would definitely use them again. They saved me some money and did a great job.

We contacted Phillips Paving after a difficult interaction with another provider. By contrast, Phillips paving was friendly, professional, and prompt in all of our interactions. We were always able to get ahold of someone to ask questions throughout the process. We were astonished to receive a nicely printed proposal after the company came out to give a bid, and we received it in the mail only a couple of days later. The coupon available at the time for Angie's List, coupled with the professional way everything was run, coupled with the reviews posted made this an easy decision. We could not be more pleased with the work that was done. They laid out what they planed to do before they began work, and even left us some wiggle room on a couple of measurements that were up for dispute. They under promised and over delivered, performing the work more quickly than they told us, and we think that it looks beautiful--well worth the investment! I would definitely use this company again--we were very impressed at the price and the quality, I shopped around and they were the least expensive for our project, and I feel that the work they did was better than what I would have received elsewhere. T hat's the definition of value! I would add that this process was one of the most expensive projects my wife and I have undertaken, and this also proved for me the value of Angie's List as well!

Called the company. Josh came out and took a look. He described for me what they would do. He recommended an asphalt overlay to my driveway (which was what I thought he'd recommend). Within a week, I had a nice, professional-looking proposal come in the mail. I sat on it for about 45-60 days because I was trying to arrange my finances to pay for it. I was a bit worried that, due to that delay, the final cost would be higher. (There's a clause in their proposal that says if the work is done more than 15 days from the estimate, the cost MIGHT be higher.) About 2 days after I faxed them the signed proposal, Mark called back and got my wife. He said they were booked solid and couldn't fit us in until the end of October. We were floored! It'd probably be cold and rainy by then !! How would that affect the final product's quality? Well, a few days later, to our surprise, Mark called back and said he had an opening... could they do it two days from now in the morning? Of course, we said and quot;sureand quot;! I wasn't home to observe it, but it must have been quite an operation. My wife said it looked like they had the entire City of Independence's Public Works department out there! (Lots of men and equipment.) We have a long driveway with a large sort of and quot;parking areaand quot; in front of the garage. They whipped it out in less than three hours! There was one specific area that I wanted to make sure they and quot;hitand quot; with asphalt. This was an area near the edge of the driveway where previously, a rock wall had jutted out. I had removed that after a friend damaged her tire on that, backing out of our drive. So, it only consisted of compacted dirt and rock (we'd been driving over it for months). It's only about a 3 foot by 1.5 foot patch. I was worried they wouldn't pave that, since Josh had done the inital estimate when we discussed that, yet we'd only talked with Mark since then and so much time had passed. I told my wife to remind them to pave that area. And they did. So I was very happy. And the price? The final price was EXACTLY what they originally quoted (minus the Angie's List coupon !) !! I was very pleased with that. (We had received a quote of $5800 for the same work from a well-known local and quot;old timerand quot; who posts ads on Craigs List very frequently. What a price difference! ) I am looking forward to calling them back in the Spring about sealing the drive!

Josh initiated the work by contacting me, coming out and bidding the job, and sending me a written estimate with a professional detailed contract. Mark then followed up to schedule the work, and was very consistent on updating me as to dates and work to be done at those times. The quality of the work was phenomenal, their professionalism was superb, and the price was fair given the extent of work I had done (patching low areas, removing and filling in a basketball pole, seal coating a 60-foot driveway and a walkway around the house). I've used this company in the past with the same experience, and plan to continue to do so. I highly recommend them!

I am satisfied with the quality of the work and with the company's professionalism. I graded down a little (to A-minus) because it took more time than they'd estimated to get the job done. They never responded to my first e-mail request for an estimate, so I called. (Another company didn't respond to an e-mail, either.) Part of the reason for the slow response was the company's heavy workload -- they're highly rated on Angie's List and so very much in demand -- and they had to work around a day or two of wet weather. The job was also slowed down because they had to wait for a special, smaller paving machine to become available, to be able to work on my narrow Brookside driveway. The estimator hadn't included the rental of the special paver in the first estimate, so the cost went up $700. After a slow start, the manager did a good job of keeping me up-to-date on the progress of the work. Before the asphalt was laid, I had a small garden on one side of the drive edged with a concrete curb, which replaced loosely stacked cinder blocks. The concrete man did a great job. The curb, 27 feet long, cost $1500 -- all of the asphalt was $4580. (The drive is about 100 feet long and covers about 1067 sq. feet.) The old drive was carefully broken up and carted off, then they gave the dirt a few days to dry out and become easier to work on. The new drive started with a 3-inch layer of base rock, then 3 inches of asphalt. The base rock and asphalt went down in one day, then I stayed off the new drive for a few more days. The job boss on the work crew was also very professional, and answered any questions I had. The crew put up traffic cones to guide cars around the work site. I am still surprised with how much easier it is to drive on the smooth new asphalt. I don't scrape the underside of my car's front end when I come off the street, either.

Gary came out to bid the job and was able to provide the bid that day. A contract was sent via email soon after and then scheduled at our and their convenience. They first came out on a Saturday to do the grading and prep of the drive. Then back on Tuesday to finish the job. The bill was sent after that, and I had 30 days to pay. Excellent job. Capable and friendly staff. We also go the Angie's list discount of $300.

They were very impressive. I had another company that came out to give me an estimate as well. They made a point to meet up with me while I was there to give the estimate and to take measurements too. I liked them because they made the effort to meet me but I didn’t use them. I don’t think I will get the work done since I am planning to get my house sold. There wasn’t anything they did that was nice. I ran out of money on the other things in the house. I would definitely consider using their services again.

We spent about $5300 on that work. We haven’t driven on it as yet and we need some time to see if there are any problems or anything. The workers and the company seemed to be okay. We thought that their price was fair and it was lower than another company we got an estimate from. They were on time and the quality of work seemed to be real good.

I only received a bid from them. They came to give the bid when they were in the areas because he said it was so far for them. Okay, that was fine with me. My big complaint is that their bid was double the cost of any other bid I received. They also said something could not be done but the others said it could and was done. My personal opinion is that they did not want to come up here to do the job so therefore choose to make the bid so high as to either not get the job or make a lot of money for the distance. Either way I thought their bid was ridiculous so obviously we did not choose them to do our work. We were very pleased with the one we choose. I will be making a report on that one shortly.

Called Phillips Paving to get an estimate. Answering machine picked up but I also heard a male voice answer the call. He hung up. I called back and talked to a woman who said she would get my information to an estimator. Two days later I saw a missed call (but no voice mail) from this company so I returned the call. Again, I was told that whoever had my information would call me back. Two days later, still no call.

It went perfectly. Great job, great result.
