If I could give it negative stars, I would. I hired Heartland Renovations to finish my basement and the work was mediocre at best. It was divided into three phases to help with finances. Two out of the three phases were completely paid for, but there is still work from both of those phases that is not finished yet (LOTS of touch ups, bathroom fan, stair handrail, wine rack, glass shelving, electrical). Then the final phase, the 3/4 Custom bathroom, I paid half up front for the parts. The project was supposed to take a week and a half. After three weeks I come home and John (the owner) had removed all of his equipment and tools from my basement. He even took parts that he purchased for my bathroom out of the money that I already paid him. He told his employee that he was just going to cut his losses. Now I have a lot of putty on my walls through out the basement as well as parts that are not painted well that was paid for 100%. A bathroom not even close to being finished, tile work was not completed, plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, and doors are also left in an either partially finished or not started state. I am out all the money that was already paid to him... To make it worse, John wasn't even going to tell me he quit. Instead He ignored all my phone calls and texts just two days after apologizing for the job taking so long. I tried to minimize the problem by requesting that he Drop off the major items that I already paid for, the toilet, faucet, shower faucet, and glass doors for the shower, but he declined to do it. I was forced to file a claim in small claims court to get money back from each phase so my new contractor can get paid. The lawsuit is against Heartland Renovations, it's registered agent and majority company Owner, Michelleb Kenyon as well as John Kenyon. This has made me very upset, I had to postpone a party twice because it was taking longer, then had to cancel it until the new contractor can finish. I had Family flying in for this even. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND JOHN, OR HEARTLAND RENOVATIONS, TO ANYONE! Unless you would like to be taken advantage off in a non-professional environment. Please take this review into consideration. You can check the accuracy of this by going to Missouri case net and searching for Legal action against the company or the Kenyon's... You will be able to see it within 3-4 weeks of the date of this post. That's how long it takes the information to be uploaded into Missouri case net.

The one good thing I can say about Heartland Renovations is that they listened to my needs and designed a solution around that. After hearing “if it were my porch, I’d just repair the damaged balusters” from at least five contractors, Heartland was the only one that took the time to find a vinyl replacement solution. I didn’t do a complete inspection before making the final payment (my mistake). The day after Heartland left, I noticed several items that required attention. I sent an email and was assured that they would return within a week. Two months later with occasional ignored emails and phone calls, I was finally successful in reaching them by phone. We agreed to meet on a Friday at 4pm to review what needed to be done. At 4:50pm, I called to make sure they were still coming out. I was told that yes they were finishing up a job and would be out shortly. At 6pm, I gave up waiting. There was no communication from them to set up an alternative meeting. I haven’t been in contact with them since. There are three wooden support columns that were left in place that they railing was attached to. The bottoms of each post had varying degrees of rot. It was felt that the damage could be repaired. The quality of repair to those columns was very poor: The repaired portions of the posts looks terrible; portions of the posts (repainted white to match the vinyl) still show the original color bleeding through; the support brackets for the railing were too big and the part that extended beyond the post was caulked on two of the posts (which looks acceptable) but it wasn't done on the third post. In addition to the problem with the posts, there were two items that I would consider poor quality with the railing installation. The first is that it appears that one section of the railing was cut too short and had to be fixed with three layered boards. The second is that the end railing was not installed square—there is a definite angle as it runs from post to house.
Description of Work: Replaced wood porch railing with rotting balusters with vinyl railing.

John was fantastic to work with! When we started the project, we only had a general idea of what we wanted. As we continued to change our minds about the overall design, John was more than willing to change the plans and offered wonderful suggestions that definitely improved the overall finished product. The project took longer than expected but the deck looks amazing!
Description of Work: Removed existing decking. Built a half covered half open deck.

Not well at all. In the end I ended up with poor quality of craftsmanship in the wood work completed, poor quality of staining, and a railing - drink rail that was contracted to be a 2 x 8 cedar board, while a 1 x 6 was installed. The thickness of the 1 x 6 is not able to hold the weight of any pressure, so sagging has ensued. I documented the events to the vendor, asking he replace these boards. When that wasn't completed after several weeks, even after they stated they would, I wrote a letter indicating that a refund was due to me, allowing credit for the 1 x 6, and indicated a deadline of the check to be received by September 5, 2013 (six business days from date of letter). Although a response, via email, to my letter indicated a check would be mailed out immediately, along with some unprofessional comments, the check did not arrive on the 5th as requested. Ultimately the check did arrive, but I would not recommend this contractor based on my experience. Overall the events leading up to conclusion took over two months, and now I'm left with replacing the rails, and addressing the other smaller items that were completed in poor quality.

All the different steps were completed as planned. Everyone was very nice and took care of little things when we mentioned them.
