 + -1 morethis was a 'deal' long ago - don't remember when. i hate to write a review since the provider could be very different by now but i want the pop ups to stop reminding me about this every time i log in. the provider may have been overwhelmed with the response to the 'deal' on angies list but he did not respond to repeated calls to set up a time for service

On Oct, 18, 2012, I received the following e-mail from Angie's List: Hello Angie's List Member, I hope this message finds you well! I am writing in regards to your recent Big Deal purchase with Hofmann's Tree Service. This service provider is no longer in a position to honor his remaining deals. We are terribly sorry for this inconvenience.

 + -1 moreIt was difficult to get ahold of them and then once the trees were trimmed, I couldn't tell anything had been done. I called and they said look at your trees, there are branches cut. He was right. I ended up calling another tree service and was much happier

 + -1 moreI had a really good experience with Hofmann's Tree Service. They gave me a really fair price for what they had to do. I have a lot of trees. They did a great job. They were very punctual. They came out and gave me the estimates. It was a considerable amount of work. Two gentlemen came out to give me the estimate and they were both very professional and friendly. We walked around and I showed them the yard. They gave me hints on things to do and what they proposed to do. They could have done a lot more, but I only wanted to do just the basic clean-up and trimming and things. They were fine with that. They didn't try to push me to do more. When it came to the front yard tree that was damaged, they said they could try to trim it up, but that it probably wasn't going to live, so they really didn't charge me very much at all for the actual removal of it. They did a great job. They were able to pull it out and put dirt back, so that you couldn't really tell that a tree had been there. They did a really good job. They also did a good job of cleaning up after themselves. They were well worth the price.
Description of Work: They pruned my trees and cleaned them up. I have seven or eight big sized trees that needed to be cleaned up and trimmed up, to get away from the roof and stuff. It's just stuff that really needed to be cleaned up. They also actually had to remove a medium sized tree in my front yard that had died.

 + -1 moreAfter I bought the deal, I called and scheduled them to come out. They were right on schedule, and we reviewed the work that needed to be done. They did the work and left, leaving the place spic and span. I was surprised at how quickly they completed the job, thanks to the size of their crew.
Description of Work: A huge section of a tree, close to 20 feet long, broke off and fell into my back yard. The main stem of the broken section was over a foot in diameter. I have a chainsaw, but there was no way I was going to tackle a job that big. Hoffman Tree Service came out and removed the fallen limbs. They also cleaned up a few additional limbs that I hadn't bundled out to the curb yet.

 + -1 moreI was disappointed by the time it took to get back to me for the work to get done and then the plan to put the gigantic truck in my driveway. He had not told me this would be the way it would be done when he gave me the bid. Could have saved us both a lot of time. I contacted another company that works in my neighborhood and had the work done, by men climbing the trees, in a couple of days.
Description of Work: I contacted Mr. Hofmann because of his special offer of $99.00 for $200.00 worth of tree service. I had some dead limbs in my back yard that needed removal. He returned my call in a day or so and came to do an inspection in a few more days. He quoted me a price of $350.00 for the work and said he would be a while due to his offer and how busy he was at that time. Weeks went by and I called and reminded him of our work to be done. He said he would be here within the week and did not show up. I called him the following Monday and he said he would be here later that day. When he arrived with his gigantic truck and attached trailer I said I was concerned about the weight of this vehicle and that it would crack my driveway. This had happened to me before and I did not want any more damage. I asked him if his men could climb the trees and remove the limbs, as other workers had done before on my trees, and he said they could not and they only way they would remove the limbs was to use the "bucket" that was attached to the gigantic truck. I was also concerned about trying to get this gigantic truck into our curved side driveway, in order to reach the back yard, without running over the sprinkler heads along the driveway. I told him I would consult with my husband by phone, which I did quickly, and we decided that Mr. Hofmann should not do this work for us. He was already getting items back in his truck when I came to speak with him. I told him our concerns for our property and that we would not be able to use his services in our back yard. He said that I should be able to get my $99.00 back from Angie's List, which I did.

 + -1 moreI purchased a Big Deal promotion from this company and after several attempts to reach them with no returned messages, finally gave up after more than three weeks and requested a refund, which Angie's List handled professionally and promptly. I unfortunately cannot speak for this company's quality or price since I didn't so much as receive a call-back, much less a quote, but for me, if this is how a relationship with a contractor starts then it's not someone I'd do business with anyway.
Description of Work: No service performed, did not even receive a call-back after multiple attempts over three weeks to reach them.

 + -1 moreThis company was unable to respond to the large amount of work Angie's List would generate. We schedule one appointment but he did not show up nor did he return my calls. I contacted Angie's List and they found another local company that would honor this deal. Thank you Angie's List. I would like to echo another members review and state that small operators like Hoffman Tree Service probably needs to have some help from outfits like Angie's List to see if their working agreement is actually a good fit. In other words, Angies list may want to be more cautious about offering deals to companies who cannot handle the number of calls it generates.

 + -1 moreI felt bad for this guy. I don't think he was prepared for the amount of work Angie's List would generate. Mr. Hoffman and his team did a good job, once they arrived. Very professional at the craft. Where they suffered is meeting demand and having a call and appointment system to meet the demand, which appeared to overwhelm the company. It took numerous phone calls and 3 appointments to actually get the work done. Small operators like Hoffman Tree Service probably need to have some help from outfits like Angie's List to see if their working agreement is actually a good fit. In other words, Angies list may want to be more cautious about offering deals to companies who cannot handle the number of calls it generates.

 + -1 moreJim and his crew were very attentive to my thoughts, considerate of my property and did an outstanding job!
Description of Work: Jim Hofmann was referred to me by by a business associate. It was a couple of days before he returned my call but made and kept our agreed upon time and date. He was professional and thourough in his evaluation of the work I needed done. Made recommendations and gave reasons/examples of why he was recommending them. Gave a bid that was in line with another bid and somewhat less than two others. He assured me that he would personally be here for the entire job and would seek my approval before making any changes to our agreed upon work. His crew was excellent! The one thing that made me choose him was the fact that he would be here to oversee the entire job and all work would be done by his crew. No subcontracters. The work performed included removal of a large ash tree and two large scotch pines and stump grinding. Also included removing dead branches from several laarge Pin Oaks and a Hard Maple. The premises looked as if no one had been here after they were done as they did an outstanding job of clean up. Total job took a day and a half

I'm sure they were busy filling the orders from these coupons but it took about a month for Jim Hofmann to come give me an estimate. His estimate was 1,800. I thought this was very high for the work that needed to be done. Jim encouraged me to get other estimates. He was very pleasant but I got the feeling that he was not really interested in doing the work I needed done. I contacted 2 other tree services who responded the next day and their estimates were $950 and $875. Needless to say, I cashed in the coupon for a refund and went with the lower bid.

 + -1 moreI had to call a few times to get him to come out and look at the work. The man came out and looked at the work and preformed the estimate for the tree service. He assured me that the work would be fine and he would be back within a week to perform the work. I told him that I would be out of town but he could still come and do the work, it has now been about three weeks and I have not heard anything back. I have left messages on the phone and emailed him with no response. My neighbor was also trying to get in touch with him as she would be there for any questions while I was gone but he did not resond to her either.

 + -1 moreJohn had advertised a $200 service for $99 coupon, which I purchased in August. I called him to get on his schedule, and he came by the house shortly thereafter to discuss what I wanted done. Subsequently, he was overwhelmed with response to the coupon, and it took some time for him to get back to me; even his voicemail box was full. I became concerned and e-mailed him to ask if he was going to be able to make it. Several others apparently lost patience and sent in F reports, having never (yet) received service. All I can say is, John IS WORTH THE WAIT! GREAT JOB JOHN HOFMANN AND CREW!! I wouldn't hesitate to call on John for TREE SERVICE again.
Description of Work: John and his crew, with bucket truck, arrived and trimmed the trees as agreed, plus several dead limbs extra at no additional cost. They thoroughly cleaned up and removed all brush and associated yard waste afterwards. The job was done quickly and professionally.

We called Jim and he and his crew, who were just finishing up another job, were here within two hours. They quickly cleared the branch off the driveway and said they'd be back sometime the next day (Saturday) to haul it away. They showed up at 8:30 Saturday morning, loaded up the branch and did a truly impressive job of cleaning up. We were very pleased with the work and especially appreciative that they got here so quickly and freed our cars from the garage!

 + -1 moreJim Hofmann came out on a Friday, and I told him that I had a coupon from Angie`s and needed some trees trimmed. Jim said that he would get back to me soon, and called the following Monday and said that they could be out that morning, They showed up soon after the call, and Jim and I discussed what needed to be done in the back yard. Four trees were trimmed, including low hanging limbs from a large pin oak. The work was done efficiently, and promptly, and every leaf and limb were cleaned up and removed. Jim was very professional, and there was no effort to "bump" up the price. This company did excellent work, and I will certainly use them again.
Description of Work: A large pin oak tree had large branches trimmed, and a poplar tree, and a maple tree were also trimmed. An evergreen tree that had grown close to the house was cut back to enable future painting. All the tree limbs and leaves were cleaned up and removed.

 + -1 moreThe Hofmann crew were very efficient in trimming the trees and cleaning up. Thet were very reasonable after my Angies coupon. It was only an additional $50.00 to do all I needed. I had six people working for an hour and a half. My neighbor came over and asked for an estimate. She also had the work done from Hofmann's. She had gotten other estimates for 10 times what Hofmann's were charging her.(Elderly widow) We both know who to call in the future.
Description of Work: The Hofmann crew Trimmed two trees that were about 20 years old. They cleaned up and removed the debrie. I would have paid our disposable service probably more to pick up the tree cuttings if I had relatives cut it.

 + -1 moreExcellent! Jim's came by within a day or two after a request for a quote. Once we contacted him to perform the job, the crew was here within a week. They were efficient and professional. Took a whole day to do the work - clean up was great too! Had several neighbors stop by to get information or to speak with Jim, as he had done work for them as well. We would definitely use this company again. Great job and great price!

Description of Work: Removed a huge oak tree hanging over the house and the stump. Due to the winter mild weather I already have plants blooming and coming up and not one was damaged.Jim did the best professional job and was very neat and clean.
