Take your business to Heidrick Allen in Leawood, KS, 913-491-5346 if you need a lamp repaired. Dave Smith the Lamp Make employees are rude, refuse to honor customer requests, and will charge you a hefty fee without telling you what work needs to be done. My husband asked an extremely inconsiderate, offensive woman at the service counter if he could speak to the person who does the wiring; we have a lamp with an arm that bends and my husband wanted to repair it himself. She refused. He left the lamp with the woman, but asked her to call him before any repairs were made. They did not call him. He went in to inquire about the lamp a week later and they charged $44.00 to run a single wire through the lamp without telling him about the repairs. My husband asked for a phone call because he wanted to bring in the rest of the parts for attaching it to the lamp if that was necessary. She said, "You should have brought in all the parts when you brought the lamp in." He returned with the parts. More than a week has passed and the lamp has still not been repaired. How do these people stay in business?

The two people waiting on me were very pleasant and helpful. The turn around time was only two days, which seemed very quick. And I felt the parts and labor fees were quite reasonable. This shop also carries many lampshades, light products, and home decor items, making it a fun place to shop. I definitely recommend this place.

Days ago read the REVIEWS .. They were AWFUL. Don't believed all negative stuff. GO AND JUDGE FOR YOURSELF I DID!!! I needed a lamp changed into a THREE WAY operation to accept a THREE different brightness bulb. Yes, the reviews were discouraging, but none the less, I wanted to see for myself. Ashamed to say...BUT .... I Must admit I was as expecting AWFUL customer service. How surprised was I when Two smiling, VERY pleasant employees greeted me. ...looked at my lamp, ...accesses my needs, ...quoted a ball park price ... shared information about the dogs .... took my contact information. ....Gave me an approximate date for lamp retrieval... What more could I expect. Prior to taking my lamp in TODAY. It was difficult for me to believe that soooo many negative reviews could be CORRECT I AM VERY, PLEASED WITH MY EXPERIENCE. Lyric Ford

I brought the lamp in on a Tuesday, was given an estimate as to cost and a time frame (within 7 to 10 days) for the repairs. I was contacted two days later and told the lamp was ready and at a cost a bit under what I was told. It was worth going out of my way to their location and the staff quite professional. I will definitely return.

The sales person spent plenty of time with us and showed us a variety of lamp shades that would work. She also informed us why it would be wise to purchase the two new harps for our current lamps since we would prefer using CFL bulbs rather than the old incandesant variety. The two new harps were only a little over $5.00. They have a very large selection of anything you might need for a lamp (including new lamps) and have a reputation of doing excellent repair work. We've used them in the past for the latter and have been extremely satisfied.

I found the elderly woman who assisted me to be dismissive and not at all helpful. I felt like I was putting her out by asking her what was required and how much it would cost. The estimate - around $200 - was ridiculous. I love the Waldo neighborhood and I enjoy giving my business to the small mom and pop shops in the area but not when I feel I'm being taken advantage of. I won't be going back to Dave's, that's for sure.

They took a look at the lamp, said they would try to repair it, but that it may have to stay at a fixed height rather than be adjustable. That was acceptable to me since the lamp was like new and I didn't want to replace it if it could be avoided. The repair estimate was $20. A week later the store called to say the lamp was ready to be picked up. When I picked it up, the screw mechanism had been replaced and the lamp was like new. I was very pleased with the work and the quick turn around on the repair. I went back to the store a few months later to look for a lamp shade for a different lamp. They have an extensive collection of shades with a wide variety of prices. I thought I knew what I wanted, but when the sales person began helping me, she suggested I hold off purchasing a shade until I could bring the lamp in. So glad I did! I took the lamp in and a sales person helped me try on different shapes, colors, styles, and switched out harps to fit the lamp and shade. I found a great shade that I wouldn't have chosen without having the lamp and her expert assistance. I've had many compliments on the lamp and am very pleased.
Description of Work: My first experience with The Lamp Maker was approximately 6 months ago. I took an adjustable height lamp to be repaired. The screw was stripped and it could no longer be tightened to maintain a height.

Dave was helping another customer when we arrived at the shop, however, one of his assistants helped us initially until Dave was available. Dave was very knowledgeable and professional as he examined our lamp. He was able to give us a year range in which it was manufactured. He discussed several options on possible renovation. He recommended someone who could do the metal refinishing. We used that provided and were very please with the results! .
Description of Work: We took an antique lamp in for evaluation. Dave provided us with some historical dates that pertained to when this lamp was made. The metal parts needed to be refinished, and he recommended someone who could provide those services.

I had no real problems with this at all. Their work was done promptly, and the quality as near as I could tell was fine. My only reason to downgrade them from an A to a B was that for a job this simple I think price is a major issue, and I thought they were somewhat high. I have not compared them with others, so perhaps their price was more reasonable than I suggest. All I'm suggesting really is that if price is a major factor and the task is not difficult, you'll want to check around.

I basically told the story above but it went great overall. Great service at a more than fair price. i have been recommending them to all of my firends. My curio cabinet looks beautiful with both of the lights now working.
Description of Work: My father had made a curio cabinet and when I inherited it the bottom light fixture that did not work. My brother tried to fix it but could not and he cut the light fixture out of it which I took in to Dave Smith's to see if they could repair it. Bette looked at it and said she would need to see the piece to know exactly how it was wired (my dad was a carpenter, not an electrician and he had wired both the top and bottom lights to the same cord.) Since I live near Waldo Bette came to my house, saw what needed to be done and them made another house call with her electrician and he fixed it. I could not be more pleased with the service I received from both Bette and the electrician. I was very pleasantly surprised at what they charged me for the house call (actually Bette made 2).

I gave the "quality" field a B rating because by the time I got home (3 miles), the finial had bent sideways while the lamp was laying on its side in the back seat. I straightened it up and didn't take it back because I'm not sure but what the metal was weak previously. The finial was stripped when I came into possession of the lamp and was just balanced on top of the shade. However, great service, pleasant staff and intriguing products to shop in the store. I'm sure if I had taken it back they would have pleasantly assessed the situation and done whatever necessary, whether it would be at my cost or theirs, depending on the cause. Bottom line: we're so lucky to have them in Kansas City.
Description of Work: My grandmother's very unique lamp needed repair because the finial which screws on to hold the shade in place had become stripped. They drilled out the fitting and replaced it.

This store and it's personnel are experts in lamps. They did a great job repairing the 2 vintage crystal lamps. It took about 2 weeks to get them back. For the glass antique lamp, I was prepared to pay a lot to have them install parts on the lamp so I could add a lamp shade in place of the glass globe (sadly the globe was broken). Instead, they suggested that I buy a simple clear glass chimney and use a chimney shade that fits over the neck of the glass chimney. I'd never heard of that before and it was a great, significantly less expensive solution that is very attractive. And they have one of the largest collections of lamp shades in town, so I found the perfect scalloped silk lamp shades for the vintage crystal lamps.
Description of Work: Replaced light bulb sockets and cords on 2 vintage crystal lamps. (about $40.00) Suggested a great, significantly less expensive alternative to adding a lamp shade to replace a glass globe on an antique lamp. So I purchased a glass chimney and shade (about $35.00 total). Also I purchased 2 silk lampshades for the vintage crystal lamps ($150.00 total for those).

I purchased a lamp at a designer's warehouse sale. At home, I noticed that it was flickering when the cord was jiggled. I took it in to Dave's and it was immediately (at the counter) diagnosed as a bad in-line switch. They checked and they did have a replacement. They then took the lamp and promised it in 2-3 weeks. However, they called in 1 week to say it was fixed. The shade was also broken. It was a contemporary lamp, but they had few contemporary shades to replace it and not the right color or size. They seemed more focused on repair than selling shades. When I picked up the lamp, they did recommend another nearby store for shades and I found one there (see report).

The lady who greeted me fixed the on-off switch for free. She also went out to the car and brought in both lamps for me, and later took the fixed one back out. In two days, they called to let me know the second lamp was fixed. When I picked it up, they took it out to the car for me. Since I walk with a cane, this extra service was much appreciated. These people know their business, are very friendly and helpful, do great work and charge reasonable prices.

David Smith is an artist, the vase was chipped at the top which Dave incorporated into the lamp structure so it became invisible; then added a small tasteful stand on which the lamp sat; and the sales personnel helped me select a beautiful silk shade. An old vase was transformed into an exquisite artistic lamp.
Description of Work: I took in an old Chinese vase and Dave Smith turned it into a beautiful small lamp with a silk shade.
