I called Before and After Brick Restoration on 9/4/12 to inquire about tuck pointing on my chimney. We had a major leak in an upstairs bedroom when the remnants of Hurricane Isaac came through KC on the preceeding weekend. Earl with Before and After came out on 9/5/12 and reviewed the problem. We received a verbal quote on the same day. By 9/7/12 we had received the written quote and agreed to the price. Earl came out on the next day (Saturday) to do the tuck pointing. He was back out again the following day to do the waterproofing. He followed up with us several weeks later to insure the tuck pointing solved the problem. We found him to be very knowledgeablee and explained the process to us and provided pictures of work his company had previously done. His written quote was the same as his verbal quote. We found the quote to be fair and were very pleased with the work performed. Earl knew further rain would be damaging to our home and he went out of his way to make sure the repair was done ASAP. I really appreciated his willingness to go above and beyond to solve our problem.
Description of Work: Tuck pointing and waterproofing of a chimney.

I was really excited to use Earl. I appreciated the professionalism of his receptionist when I called to request an estimate. Earl emailed (as requested) to schedule the estimate and came at the appointed time. He was very pleasant and I liked him and planned to use him based on our in-person meeting if his quote was competitive. However, Earl never sent me an estimate. I didn't want to chase him so I used someone else who was great (no chasing required).

It went well... just as described in detail by Earl. He is knowledgeable and very honest. He prides himself on doing the job correctly and to the best of his ability.
Description of Work: Our natural stone wall had sunk and cracked due to the dry weather last summer. Plus the concrete cap was old and cracking.... so Earl and crew tuck pointed and placed pliable joints at the stone/house juncture to allow for future expansion. Plus they sealed the stone to prevent furthur problems with cement cap.

Their work was done just as pre-told. Quality work. Received many compliments. The company did extra things not included in the price that they noticed might bring future water damage to my building. Was much appreciated.
Description of Work: One side of my building was very rough with uneven cement blocks from a former building having stood there. This company sealed the top tiles and stuccoed the entire south wall. In addition, they repaired small areas around the building that were deteriorating. This was not in the initial bid and they did not charge me for it.

Earl was punctual and professional during the quote process. He asked good questions, took the relevant measurements and photos of the area to receive work. Within a week I received a descriptive bid on all the work to be performed, including: removal of old brick and pad from stoop and walkway, lay a new concrete pad expanding the size of the stoop, lay new brick along length of walkway and stoop. I ended up using a mason I had used in the past who was a little more expensive, but I will consider Earl for future projects and would recommend others to contact him for their projects.

I can not speak highly enough about their services. They did a beautiful job. They are awesome! They are also knowledgeable and take a lot of pride in their work.
Description of Work: They initially came out to re do my stone window ledge. They did a lot of other work. This included tuck pointing four of my stone chimneys and sealing them. The chimneys are very high and it was not an easy job. They also re built eleven of my piers in the back yard. They sealed the stone around my home and re sealed my concrete driveway after another provider did not do the work properly.

They did a good job and they came on time. They were good and friendly. They finished the project on time. They double checked the chimney for any issues. A supervisor came to check the quality of the work. He did not like how something was done so he fixed the issue himself.

Mr. Brown was the 2nd mason I called for an estimate because of his good Angie's List reviews. He showed up relatively on time, was very polite when speaking about the scope of the work, & took measurements for an estimate. However, I didn't receive the estimate from him until 4-5 weeks later. He kept me hanging all this time, saying that they were behind on writing quotes, but I needed the work to be done before temperatures became too cold. By the end of October, when I received the quote, it was too late & I had to wait until the following Spring to have another contractor do the work. His estimate was only slightly higher than I ultimately paid for the work.
Description of Work: I needed a fair amount of rebuilding & repair to a bump-out section of the stone block foundation of my 1916 Brookside home. Approx. sizes are a 5' wall, 10-12' wall & a 10' wall, all 3' high.

On the front of my house the brick work had sunk with an old footing causing the bricks to separate. Before and After Brick Restoration came in and rebuilt a 3 foot by 8 foot section on the front of the house. They took down the old bricks and then tied the new bricks into the wall of the house so that it would no longer sink with the footing underneath.

Earl Brown kept me informed from start to finish on his work. He has great ideas and easy to understand explanations of how the work should be done. He was fast, punctual, informative, knowledgable. For a yound man I found him to be all about business which I liked.
Description of Work: I would recommend this young man to the President of the United States. He was very knowlegable, professional, punctual and fast. I told him my problems with existing sidewalk and he provided me with a very easy to understand solution to the cracks in my old sidewalk keeping the new work he performed in the same style and period of my old house. He is young but he knew his craft very well.

On the recommendation of a friend in the architecture business, we went with Before and After, and they did fantastic work from start to finish. To begin, Earl was responsive, easygoing and prompt throughout the bid process. He was one of the first contractors to check out the job, and the bid he provided was clear, complete and easy to understand. A great start! From there, things just got better. As the work progressed, it became clear that we had not just hired stonemasons, we had hired true artists. Earl's team brought a level of attention to the work that created a breathtaking product, from the selection and placement of the historic stone (sourced by Before and After) to the fine details in the tuck-pointing. Due to some miscommunication on my part, the way the drain pipes were initially integrated wasn't as I'd like. I offered to pay to have the work modified, but Earl re-did the work at no charge! Since the wall has gone up, we've had nothing but compliments from our friends and neighbors. The wall looks so much better than it did before it fell. We now wonder why we waited to have it replaced! Before and After took an unfortunate and badly timed wall collapse and turned it into a home upgrade. We now look on the entire experience as a stroke of luck! In sum, we will certainly be calling Before and After for our next stone project, and you should do the same!
Description of Work: We had one side of the huge, 100-year-old stone retaining wall that holds up our plot of land (and our house) fall over on new year's day. Earl's team re-built the wall from scratch and integrated it at a corner with the front side of the wall, which was undamaged. Basically, they replaced the big half of a really big "L"-shaped wall. Earl also sandblasted and tuckpointed the undamaged side of the wall to tie it all together. A modern drainage solution and integration with our existing downspouts via new drain pipe runs were also included in the bid.

They did very well. They called when a little late and repaired the fire places promptly. The settlement cracks were inconsequential and they told us how to repair it to save money. Very helpful. From the estimate to the actual repair was about 1 week.
Description of Work: Before and After Brick Restoration came twice. They came once for estimation and once for repair work. They gave us estimate for small cracks in the basement and exterior settlement. They repaired the fireplace. Smoke from the fireplace was rolling into the family room whenever fire was in the fireplace.

I called this company based on reviews in Angie's List. We made an appointment for an estimate at 1:00 pm on a given day. At 1:00 pm on on that given day Earl Brown and his associate were at my front door. Earl was professional and very knowledgable. He explained the cause for the problem and the best method to fix it. After taking measurments and pictures Earl said that they would work up an estimate and email it to me. I received the estimate and called to accept it. The workmen arrived on time, were very professional, did a great job on the brick and as well as a excellent cleanup. I expect to use this company for another project in the Spring.
Description of Work: Brick facing on three sides of the front entrance stoop was pulling away from from the concrete. All the brick was removed, cleaned, and reset with straps to hold the bricks to the concrete. All the repairs were then sealed.

They provided a professional and detailed estimate. I really appreciated that since I was working with my insurance. And since I'd never replaced a stone wall before it gave me an idea of exactly what was involved. They were on time and professional. They took care of the permits needed by the city to do the work. Everything was explained to me. All my questions were answered. They were very easy to contact as needed during the work. All the employees were friendly and professional. When the work was finished they cleaned up everything. The finished wall is beautiful. It was apparent that they took pride in their work. This is the best company I've ever done business with by far.

I noticed gaps in the mortar and broken bricks underneath the windows in front of my house where water was penetrating the exterior. I also noticed damaged bricks on the chimney and wanted to have weather seal applied before winter. Earl came out to the house (on the second attempt at a meeting) and took several pictures of the areas where I had concerns. He was very professional and said that he would give me a quote in a week. He warned me that this was a busy time for them (November) when everyone else wants to get this type of work done before winter. Two weeks later I received an itemized quote detailing the work to be completed and the cost of each line item. It took two days for the work to be completed but the workers were very friendly and wanted to make sure that all windows and doors were shut so that we would not get a lot of dust in the house as they were grinding out the mortar joints to remove the damaged bricks. The finished work product is great and you can not tell were the new bricks start and the old bricks begin.
Description of Work: Replaced broken bricks on the front facade of the house and the top of my chimney, tuck pointed and fixed missing mortar in the same area, weather sealed the chimney and front facade

We have a 1907 central Hyde park home that has a stone porch and foundation. the stone varies in height above ground from 4 to 8 feet. I asked Earl Brown for an estimate and he responded quickly and we set up a meeting time. He came out to the house and got us an estimate quickly. We later met with Earl again and he went over the estimate with us showing us around the house the critical areas as well as areas that were not critical but would look a lot better with updating. Earl is very friendly and took a lot of time answering all of our questions. We ended up getting the house tuck pointed all the way around and have the piers in our front yard and porch rebuilt. Earl was very accommodating with payment, he agreed to my request of 3 payments over the course of the project (beginning, middle and end). Earl's staff showed up as discussed and began working. His staff was always hard working, courteous and friendly. Throughout the project Earl kept me informed of the progress through email or by stopping by the house to discuss the progress after inspecting it. The house now looks great. A neighbor even commented that the porch, "looked great". I plan to hire Earl again to fix a leaning chimney. Do yourself a favor and hire Before and after Brick restoration for your stone/masonry work.

We have hired them. They are to start on September 14th. We asked them to delay because of a trip we are making. The quote they provided us was for $2030.00. We decided to go with them to do the work for us probably because my husband really liked his friend, Earl Brown, who is knowledgeable and helpful. They had a coupon going which was $200 off chimney repair and they also gave us a senior discount on top of it. They also gave us some references. We looked at two of the places and then got to talk to one of those people who deal in furnaces. He was very very helpful.

This is a very hard working crew that did all of this work in the heat of summer. Since the home has had painted brick for over 45 years, I had no idea what was under it. They were able to show me in an unobtrusive area that it was actully beautiful brick work hidden all those years. I am very happy with the results.

The gentlemen that came were ON TIME, they were PROFESSIONAL, and they were friendly. They were personable and simply impressive. The work they did is OUTSTANDING. It looks so seamless. The two edges of broken brick they fixed are directly under two original finished edges. The transition between the two is seamless. It doesn't look "fixed", it looks as though it was never "wrong". It looks like an original doorway!
Description of Work: Our finished sun-room is an addition, previously a porch. When the room was converted, an existing window was made into a door. The brick exterior was broken through to elongate the window to the floor making it a doorway. At the time, decades ago, wood paneling was hung hiding the jagged roughly broken brick. Recently, we decided to remove the paneling and in the process, uncovered this unattractive brick. Before And After came and cleaned up the jagged edges. It looks PERFECT!!!

A team of 2 persons came to do the work, they were on time, very polite and good workers. They cleaned everything after the work was done and even did little touched up on our brick siding with the left over mortard (for free and we did not ask them to do this, they just noticed that some places could use a little attention and they did it) . They let the new brick planter set a few days for the mortard to solidified before they came back when they said they will, to refill it with gravel on the bottom and dirt above it. We did pay them at the time the planter was done, and before they came back to refill it, so they could just come while we were at work if needed. They respected their engagement. Overall it was a very good experience To be complete, I put C for the price because my wife and I thought that for the amount of material (they mostly reused the bricks that were already there unless they werre too damaged) and work they did, it seemed a little expensive, but we actually have no idea really on how much cost masonry work. We will definitively call them back for any work with masonry.
Description of Work: They demolished and rebuilt a brick flower planter that was located next to the stair that lead to our house. We've asked for a quote from them and 2 other commpanies. From these 3 companies, one never called back, one told us they were not doing small jobs right now, and Before and After came while we were working to see what needed to be done and got us a quote within 48h of our original phone call. We really appreciated this and went with them without looking further. Because none of the other companies gave us a quote for this job, I do not really know if the price we've got was fair or good. We were very satisfied with the job that they did. It was done less than a week after giving us a quote. We really appreciated that and even if they were working on bigger work projects, they came during a weekend to do our small job.

Earl Brown describes work, does estimates and keeps you advised of progress, problems, etc. He is very knowledgeable and has good tastes. He has a large crew with various degrees of specialization. Virtually all have incredble work ethic, working long hours in the heat and humidity of July and August. They are very precise and clean up work area. They take no shortcuts. This is very labor intensive work. I was very impressed.
