We took a very dark old cabinet to Abbot's and Dean (one of the brothers who own it) spent time telling us what kinds and quality of wood it was made of. He even knew that the shelves inside were not original. We had always told people it was a tall desk with two round inkwells in the door, but instead, as he explained, it was a Victrola record player cabinet. He went on to say that, they originated in the 1920s and the wells were made and used to store new and used record needles. He asked if it was a family heirloom because if not, he told us honestly that we might not want to spend the money to refinish it. We said we got it from a grandfather, but did not know any more than that. Come to find out, this same grandfather bought it and the built-in record player was removed years later, and shelves made by him, to make it more of a storage cabinet, so we definitely wanted it refinished. Abbot's didn't just refinish the outside, but took it completely apart, filled in dents and scratches, made completely new oak shelves (to match the rest of the wood), and stained it lighter (using a technique of mixing colors to make a unique color, so the beauty of the natural wood can be seen. The original key, to lock the door, was almost snapped in half, so he opened his desk drawer and pulled out a bigger-heavier one and said he'd throw it in free. The cabinet turned out better than expected! Their artisanship is impeccable and now it is a beautiful piece of furniture that can be passed down to future generations. They are true artisans, a trade they learned from their father, and one they truly take great pride. You will not be disappointed.

A few weeks ago, I broke the leg on one of our dining room chairs. I called Abbots and took the chair to them. They looked at it. Said it could be repaired and told me what they would do to fix it. Today, they delivered the chair back. It looks perfect and feels very solid. The repair is impossible to see. It should work for a very long time.

Description of Work: Expensive! I made the mistake of not getting a written estimate before the furniture was picked up and refinished. The bill was a surprise to me....very high....and many extras were done that I would have declined had we discussed them (e.g, new glass; new support boards for bed). But the workmanship and quality were excellent. These guys are pros at what they do...Both sides needed to do a better job communicating expectations. I should have asked more questions.

Description of Work: I had three wood pieces needing repair; a chair, bi-fold door and cabinet front door. They did a great job at a reasonable price. I like family owned businesses.

It was a fantastic experience and the chairs are done just amazingly well.
Description of Work: Completely reupholstered two antique, wingback chairs from the frame up through years of poorly done upholstery from the past. Re-did springs, including on the back of the chairs and bottom, webbing, frame, cushions. They allowed me to purchase my own fabric for them to use. These are wonderful, wonderful people. Very responsive, taking the time to explain what they did and why. It was an extensive project. The chairs look absolutely beautiful and we couldn't be more pleased. Thank you so much Dean and Norm!!

Description of Work: Had a small nightstand door to be repaired. Was told it would take one to two weeks. After 4 months, I picked the unrepaired door back up. Kept being told they just hadn't gotten around to it. Was told they had gotten some commercial orders and mine just kept being put off.

One of our six dining room chairs was falling apart, and the chair became unsafe to sit in. Since the dining room set is foreign made, it is most likely virtually impossible to even find a replacement chair. I searched the Angie's listings under wood furniture repair hoping to find someone nearby who could repair the chair. Abbot's seemed to be the closest to us. Gave them a call, and brought the chair to their store the same day, which was Monday, and I was hoping to have the chair fixed before Sunday because we were having a dinner party. Needless to say, the first question was whether or not the chair could be fixed. They determined that it could be, and that they would do their best to have it finished in time for our dinner on Sunday. I just picked up the chair this morning (Friday), and they did a terrific job of essentially and quot;re-buildingand quot; the structural soundness of the chair. Although we've had this dining room set over 40 years, the chair is as stable and solid as it was when it was brand new. Abbot's is great!

Description of Work: I brought in two chairs and a mirror on Monday. They told me it would be a week or two but they called Wednesday to say they were ready. One was an inexpensive desk chair that they re-glued. Another was an antique side chair from which the back had broken off. It looked like it had never been broken when they were done. The large wall mirror has several decorations on the frame, one of which had popped off and gotten lost. They created a new piece and it fit in so well that it's impossible to tell it has been repaired. I thought the prices were very reasonable. The people were really nice.
