Aleda and Bill Posladek are the founders of A.B. May. They purchased May Furnace Company in 1959. They renamed it A.B. May A for Aleda and B for Bill and set out to offer Kansas City comfort and top quality service with a few employees and four trucks. Over the years we have expanded to offer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, and Appliance repair services. In the mid-1970’s we pioneered one of the first homeowner warranties in the industry. Today, we give thousands of Kansas City homeowners a plan for home repairs through our Home Warranties for home buyers and our Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value service plans. We were out of town when it died. I called the Monday we got back and AB May had a repair man at our house the same day! He was able to fix the fridge at that time too.
Description of Work: Our fridge died over the weekend and would not keep anything forzen or cool.

They came same day as I purchased the water heater. Amazingly prompt service! Installer did a very good job and was very quick. No problems. He also was very informative, giving me a little tutorial about the water heater, how to care for it, how to call the city for inspection, etc. Good job.
Description of Work: This was the company sent out to install water heater purchased from Home Depot. Removed old water heater, installed new water heater. Refitted connections so that new water heater would fit in old space. That is why it cost $35 instead of free.

This company installed the existing water heater (incorrectly at the time, put the pipes on backward, in for out). After 5 years the overflow valve burst. I called to schedule repair, but when the service person arrived, they tried to sell me unneeded spike flows. They still charged me $50 for the service call. The company called me to talk about this problem after reading the report on Angie's List and they refunded the $50 charge.

I have a service contract with the company. I received an email from them reminding me to schedule the heater check. I emailed back with the date and time (afternoon) for the check-up. The company called me prior to the service technician showing up. When the technician arrived, he put on booties to keep my floors clean. He vacuumed the heater, rinsed off the filters, turned on the humidifier, and checked out the heater to make sure it was working properly.

AB May provided an excellent solution to our comfort problems in a newly purchased existing house with high ceilings and an old HVAC System. They designed a dual zone system that reduced the stratification of the air in our house for greater comfort and dramatically reduced our costs by its efficiency. The work was done on schedule and with an eye to avoiding damage to our property or disruption to our household. The technicians were courteous and knowledgeable and fully explained all aspects of the project and system. Obvious care had been taken to train technicians on how to advise us on the proper use and care of our new system. All warranty and customer service options were explained thoroughly. Our heating and cooling costs are dramatically reduced and comfort level excellent.

and replaced the nut with a smaller nut. It still leaked. I called them agian and they came out and he put more of the jointstring plumber tape and asked me if I was undoing it (which I thought was out of line and I could not believe he suggested that) The problem is still there and I was not pleased with how they thought I was undoing their work. I was not charged with the return calls for the work that was not satisfactory and needed to be redone.
Description of Work: I had a leak in the bathtub faucet and they sent out a young man who replaced a part in the hot water side. I discovered that we still have a leak. I requested a more knowledgeable plumber to come out, so they sent an older man who said that Jason had not put pipe jointstring on, so the second man wrapped the joint around it and stopped the leak. We then noticed that the fitting behind the hot water faucet was free wheeling and we could not tighten it. They sent Dan back out and he said something was broken. Put some sort of pipe goop on the broken part and in the interim, the water department required that we put a new meter in the basement and replaced the new meter and in doing so had to turn off the water into the house which started to leak. When Dan came to take care of the hot water fitting, I asked if he would repair the leak in the basement. He tightened the nut and said he thought it had taken care of it. The nut was actually cracked. I needed another call. He came out again

I believe anyone using this company would be very satisfied with the work.
Description of Work: A.B. May contacted me about doing a sesaonal check up on our heating/cooling system. We have a yearly contract with them. I was thankful that they were on the ball and set up the service call. As always, the service man from A.B. May was very professional and was easy to work with. The company provides excellent service on a regular basis.

AB May took the time to educate me on the difference between a heat pump and A/C. I choose a heat pump. They installers showed up on time and were very friendly and neat. They showed us how to work the programmable thermostat before they left. The price was extremely competitive with similar quality equipment. I have called AB May for plumbing work and heating service. My experiences have been outstanding. The plumber even showed me a couple things I could fix myself to save some money. He didn't have to do that. On all occasions the workmen were courteous, knowledgable and prompt. I will use AB May again should the need arise.

Very pleased with this service. Everyone was helpful from the initial call from the dispatcher to the end of the installation.
Description of Work: Install of water heater from Home Depot. Amount paid includes cost of water heater. Heater and service were ordered by phone. HD had suggested a certain heater. When the tech arrived, he immediately realized that it wouldn't fit and knew exactly which one to order. He took care of arrangements quickly while I made changes in order with HD. There was a charge to bring installation up to code which was not unexpected. Once the correct heater arrived, it was installed within a couple of hours.

Salesman came out to bid. The company sent postcard thanking me. I received telephone call asking about bid. When I said I had never heard back from him, she hemmed and hawed then said he was out of town. I never heard back from them.

We've used them for over 20 years. Recently we've had some problems. It seems like they're more interested in selling us new equipment than repairing what we already have. They finally did get the necessary repairs done that were found during their last visit, but it has been quite a hassle.

I fell their prices are very high. I just received a letter stating that another year warranty will be $515. He told me that is would be over $600 to have them installed. I had to pay him $60 just for this estimate. I feel he was not very professional. They have come promptly once before but the other times they were not prompt. They tell me they have called to let me know, but I did not answer so they just choose to come the following day. But the people that answer the phone are very nice.
Description of Work: My son bought me an annual plan for $400. They have been out many times, but the last time they came out to give me an estimate to install my washer and dryer.

They will not come out to look at the work without the $79 service fee and I have a 10 year warranty.
Description of Work: I had a furnace, air conditioner and heat pump installed in September of 2000. Then in July of 2002 the compressor was replaced. Now the compressor and the heat pump are not working and they will not come out to service it without my paying a $79 service fee.

Kelly called ahead and arrived about 10 min earlier than expected. He was very experienced (said he'd worked for AB May for 20+ years)and extremely polite. Kelly didn't charge me for his visit. If I need appliance services again, I will definitely call AB May and request him by name.
Description of Work: Our 1-1/2-year-old Maytag Neptune washer was making a disturbing noise. To me it sounded like a ratchet-like sound when the drum was turning in one direction. I thought it might have been a gear. The repairman, Kelly, tried to recreate the sound by starting a load of wash with heavy towels and sweatshirts, but couldn't reproduce it. He explained that there were no gears in the machine. However, the sound may have come from an object such as a paperclip that was caught in the machine. He also said that there is some type of reservoir in the machine that collects misc objects. You can't empty this reservoir without dismantling the machine. I still hear the sound on occasion but don't feel as anxious about it.

The plumber was on time, very polite and did an excellent job. The price was nearly $700 less than some other quotes that I received. The office staff did an excellent and prompt job of replying to my emails and inquiries. I'd definitely use AB May again.

INSTALLERS MADE DECISIONS WITHOUT CONSULTING OWNER. WORK WAS SLOPPY AND NOT WHAT WAS CONTRACTED FOR. OFFICE PERSONNEL COVERED THEIR EMPLOYEES MISTAKES AND DID NOT MAKE GOOD ON WHAT THE SALESPERSON SAID. THE VP THREATENED MYSELF AND MY NEIGHBOR. THEY DID NOT RETURN CALLS. THEY USED SEXIST LANGUAGE THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS, I.E. LITTLE LADY, SWEETIE, ETC.
Description of Work: I LIVE IN A CONDO COMPLEX. MY UPSTAIRS NEIGHBOR CONTRACTED WITH A B MAY FOR A NEW AC AND HEATING SYSTEM. A B MAY'S REPRESENTATIVE WENT TO THE ROOF AND TOOK PICTURES OF THE OLD AC TO BE REPLACED AND GAVE IT TO THE INSTALLERS. TWO DAYS LATER THE INSTALLERS TOLD HIM THE WORK WAS COMPLETED. WHEN HE WENT ON THE ROOF THE A B MAY INSTALLERS HAD REMOVED MY AC UNIT AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW ONE. THEY HAD GONE IN AND CHANGED THE COOLANT LINES AND ELECTRICAL LINES TO MATCH HIS UNIT. THE NON-WORKING UNIT THAT THE A B SALESPERSON HAD TAKEN A PICTURE OF WAS STILL THERE BUT NOW IT WAS HOOKED UP TO MY CONDO UNIT. A B MAY REFUSED TO GIVE ME A NEW UNIT EVEN THOUGH THE PICTURES (BEFORE AND AFTER) WERE EVIDENCE AND THEIR OWN INVESTIGATOR SAID THAT THERE WERE MISTAKES MADE. THE MANAGEMENT STRONGLY VOICED ME INTO TAKING A ''DEAL'' FOR A NEW UNIT. THE ALTERNATIVE WAS TO TAKE THEM TO COURT WHICH WOULD HAVE COST MORE THAN A NEW UNIT.

ON 2/23/05, THE CONDENSING UNIT IDENTIFIED BY THE UPSTAIRS OWNER AS THE ONE SERVING HIS UNIT WAS DISCONNECTED, AND THE REFRIGERANT RECOVERED. RECOVERING THE REFRIGERANT NOT ONLY REMOVES IT FROM THE CONDENSING UNIT, BUT ALSO FROM THE EVAPORATOR COIL ABOVE THE FURNACE. WHEN THE INSTALLERS DISCONNECTED THE EVAPORATOR COIL THEY FOUND THE UNIT STILL CHARGED WITH REFRIGERANT, INDICATING THE WRONG CONDENSING UNIT HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED. THEY IMMEDIATELY REINSTALLED AND RECHARGED THE UNIT SERVING THE DOWNSTAIRS APT AND PROCEEDED WITH THE JOB. THE CONDENSING UNIT WAS NEVER REMOVED FROM THE ROOF, NOR WAS THE NEW UNIT EVER HOOKED UP TO THE DOWNSTAIRS CONDO. SHE WAS NOTIFIED AND, TO ASSURE HER THAT NO DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE, SHE WAS GIVEN A ONE YEAR SERVICE GUARANTEE ON HER AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM AT NO CHARGE. THIS WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO HER. WHILE NO DAMAGE HAD BEEN DONE, ON 4/7/05 WE INSTALLED A COMPLETE NEW A/C SYSTEM FOR HER. SHE AGREED TO PAY $500 FOR A SYSTEM VALUED AT MORE THAN $3000. THESE CHARGES WERE SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW OUR COST. WE DISPUTE THE ACCUSATION THAT A REPRESENTATIVE THREATENED OR USED SEXIST LANGUAGE. SINCE A.B. MAY HAS NO VP’S WE ARE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY WHO THAT INDIVIDUAL MAY HAVE BEEN FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION.

A. B. MAY RESPONDED TO OUR REQUEST FOR A SERVICE CALL IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. THEY INSTALLED FREON IN ORDER TO GIVE US AIR CONDITIONING UNTIL THE NEW UNIT COULD BE INSTALLED, AND THEN ALLOWED US THE CHARGE FOR THIS ON THE PURCHASE OF THE NEW AIR CONDITIONER. SINCE IT WAS SUNDAY MORNING, I WAS DESPERATE TO FIND A PLUMBER. AB WAS THE FIRST TO CALL BACK, SO I WENT WITH THEM. UNFORTUNATELY THE PROBLEM WOULD NOT REPLICATE ITSELF AFTER THE PLUMBER ARRIVED (JUST MY LUCK), SO THERE WAS NOT MUCH HE COULD DO. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE IF HE PUT ON HIS SHOE COVERS, (AS STATED ON THEIR WEB PAGE), SO HIS BOOTS WOULDN'T GET MY CARPET DIRTY. BUT, AT THIS POINT IN TIME, I WAS JUST HAPPY HE SHOWED UP ON A SUNDAY, SO I WASN'T ABOUT TO COMPLAIN.

THEY CHARGE AN ANNUAL FEE, BUT ALSO CHARGE A SERVICE FEE EVERY TIME A SERVICE PERSON WALKS THROUGH YOUR DOOR, NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO OR DON'T DO. THEY INSTALLED A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR, BUT WILL NOT HONOR SERVICES STATED IN THE CONTRACT SUCH AS REPLACING THE DEVICES NOR HELPING ME IN ANY WAY. I GIVE THEM THE LOWEST MARKS AND WILL DISCONTINUE SERVICES IMMEDIATELY.
Description of Work: I HAVE USED THEM FOR HEATING AND A/C PROBLEMS.

WE HAVE HAD A.B. MAY DO OTHER WORK FOR US OVER THE YEARS, MOSTLY A/C AND ELECTRICAL, SO WE FELT COMFORTABLE HIRING THEM FOR A MAJOR JOB. JASON, BILL, MICAH AND DENNIS PERFORMED THE WORK AS WELL AS I COULD HAVE WANTED, AND IN A TIMELY FASHION. WHEN ONE ISSUE CAME UP ABOUT THE FINISH IN ONE AREA, BILL DIDN'T HESITATE TO TEAR INTO IT, REDO IT AND MAKE IT RIGHT BEFORE ASKING US TO SIGN OFF ON THE JOB. SEWER WORK IS INVASIVE AND NASTY, BUT THE GUYS WORKED TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY. TESTING AND RECHECKING EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. THE PRICE WAS COMPETITIVE WITH TWO OTHER COMPANIES, AND I THOUGHT A.B. MAY GAVE GOOD VALUE FOR THE DOLLAR. THE CLOSERS FOR ME WERE THAT I FELT THAT I WAS BEING GIVEN STRAIGHT ANSWERS AND THAT A.B. MAY USES THEIR OWN PEOPLE INSTEAD OF SUBCONTRACTORS FOR THEIR UNDERGROUND WORK.
Description of Work: SEWER LINE VIDEO INSPECTION. NEW MAIN 4'' SEWER LINE FROM HOUSE TO CITY CONNECTION, SEWER BACKWATER VALVE INSTALLED, 2'' WASHER STANDPIPE/TRAP CUT INTO EXISTING MAIN STACK.
