Aleda and Bill Posladek are the founders of A.B. May. They purchased May Furnace Company in 1959. They renamed it A.B. May A for Aleda and B for Bill and set out to offer Kansas City comfort and top quality service with a few employees and four trucks. Over the years we have expanded to offer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, and Appliance repair services. In the mid-1970’s we pioneered one of the first homeowner warranties in the industry. Today, we give thousands of Kansas City homeowners a plan for home repairs through our Home Warranties for home buyers and our Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value service plans. They have more than one location. They did a really good job with the plumbing. They do plumbing, electrical and heating and cooling. They do a vast amount of work and I would recommend them to anybody. They brought in the equipment to clean out the sewer lines and all of the lines in general and get everything back up to working correctly. We were in a rental and they came out and cleaned out the drains for us. I called and got right it. This was during the rainy season when they are busy. They were able to do everything we needed them to do. They didn't cost us a whole lot.

Upstairs toilet had sprung a leak after living in the house after 7 months. Since I had the bathroom redone upon move in they wouldn't cover the repair and tried to charge me $260 for the repair. I talked them down a bit, but still who wants a home warranty company that always defaults to pre-existing condition for every phone call and visit? Seriously, it takes 15 minutes to replace a toilet seal, and at the discounted rates I received it was at about $800 an hour rather than $1000. Just take your money and burn it for heat in the winter rather than spend it on AB May, you will get more for your money in my opinion.

we always appreciate customers who provide feedback so we have the opportunity to address their concerns and improve our services. We have reviewed the history on the plumbing call referenced in this report. It was the determination of our plumber that the leaking toilet was the result of improper installation of the seal by the previous contractor. A properly installed toilet seal should last many years. Failure of a covered item due to improper installation or improper use is excluded from the Home Warranty coverage. During the same service call our plumber also replaced the supply line to the toilet which was covered under the Home Warranty. The amount charged included pulling and resetting the toilet as well as replacing the supply line.

all of my expectaions were exceeded.
Description of Work: I would have called AB May even if I had not joined Angies List (I joined for another reason) the tech not only solved the issue, the house is MUCH more pleasant temp wise, we purchased a service agreement because he was so helpful, eook the time to explain things, and did not even bring up a service contract! We asked him. Besides the stellar reputaion AB May already has in Kansas City, the proof is in the service and this company is quite simply the best.

They are helpful in the sales process, have a good reputation, and good price on the equipment. It went very well. They customized some things, relocated the outside unit, and added some gas turnoff valves. They did some things that we wanted in particular.

AB May came out, called me before they headed my direction, so I could be there when they arrived and not have to waste time waiting for them to arrive. Ben Friend was prompt, courteous, and professional. My air conditioner was frozen. He told me how to thaw it out, and then returned the following day to add air coolant and check it for efficiency. I had asked him to help me nurse my unit along until fall when I was planning on buying a new system. He referred me to Dan L. in sales informing me of all of the great savings I could take advantage of now. Dan L stopped by my home and dropped information off to my house--we couldn't come up with a time suitable for both of us to meet--it worked out that I was home. He was not pushy. He was professional and allowed me to make my own decisions. I will be purchasing a new unit with them during the MO no-sales-tax week in April. The $150 that I had to pay to have my system checked and fixed will be deducted from my bill when I buy a new system. Great company to work with.

They were highly referred. The overall experience was excellent. The guys who were working were great, but I think they just needed a little bit more skill in cutting the holes for the vents. We pointed that out to Pat, the sales person, and he has already addressed it. They were responsive, punctual, and professional. I would use this service again.

As mentioned above, my hot water heater was spewing water all over the basement floor early one morning. I checked Angie's list and called about 7 am for an emergency call. I understand they were quite busy and it took about four hours for the service man to complete his original job. When he arrived, he thoroughly explained the situation and suggest three options (three replacement water heaters of increasing price and warranties). I chose the middle option. He completed the work in a timely manner and thoroughly cleaned up the area all water and even the rust that had leaked out from the old water heater. I asked whether he had time to replace my garbage disposal which I had not gotten around to dealing with after it went out a month earlier. He did and again offered three options with increasing prices and warranties. Again, I chose the middle option and cannot imagine how much better the "best" option would work as I am thoroughly happy with the operation of the one he installed. I used to have to wait for a commerical on television before running the old dispoal because it was so loud it drowned out all other sound in the room. The new disposal is so quiet you can have a conversation without even noticing the disposal is running! Who knew that was possible? Anyway, I was very pleased with the service, the repairman's professionalism and knowledge. I would definitely used them again.
Description of Work: My water heater was spewing hot water all over the place. I called for emergency service and the repairman showed up in about four hours. He was very knowledgeable, professional and explained all of my options. I was impressed by how quiet he was and how clean the area was (all the water was dried, the floor spotless) when he finished the work. Because my garbage disposal stopped working about a month earlier, I asked if he had time to replace it during this service call and he again was very knowledgeable. The new disposal is quiet--I never knew they could be so quiet. Overall, I am very happy with the service, the fact that he had everything I needed on his truck and didn't need to order products, reschedule, etc.

Service specialist arrived on time (four minutes early) and was easily identifiable. After greeting asked what I needed. Made sure I was aware that looking at the central air conditioning unit was going to cost $89 for the visit. After the greeting he went to the outdoor central a/c unit and began assessment. First attempt to start unit tripped the circuit breaker. Specialist's meters suggested a stuck compressor, so he installed a start gear assembly to see if that would get the compressor working. It did. Ran unit for about ten minutes to determine if it could cool the house. Took wet bulb temperature reading from air filter slot in duct work. Computed cool ability based on other measurements of cooling into the house and heat coming out. System not cooling and behaving like it was low on refrigerant (R22a). Provided cost estimate for refrigerant, start gear, and labor. After obtaining estimate on replacing the starting gear to keep the compressor running and hearing the service specialist's opinion on how long repair would last, I opted to not repair the unit as it is 18 years old and the R22a refrigerant is leaking at an increasing pace. Specialist placed cover on unit, ensured all bolts were proper, and cleaned up his work area. Upon my mention of wanting to replace the unit he offered to call his sales office to arrange a quote visit. Final bill was for the $89 visit charge, and he mentioned the $89 would go toward the cost of a system purchased and installed through A.B. May if I chose to do so.
Description of Work: Checked central air conditioning unit to determine repairs required. Temporarily installed new start gear to restart stuck compressor. Ran unit to determine its current cooling ability. Provided estimates for more permanent repair.

I tend to ask a lot of questions and they were always patient with me and kept me informed about everything they were doing. They did not have any problem about removing my old furnace which was so big that at least two companies wanted to charge me several hundred dollars extra to remove from my basement. Also they installed a 95 % efficient furnace when I only paid for a 92 % efficient unit. When I mentioned this they said they were out of the one I ordered on the day of installation so I got lucky. It has been in for six months now and they have been out for one semi-annual check up. The unit has worked flawlessly. I am extremely happy and would recommend them without hesitation.

A salesman gave me a quote on the services. I was also have issues with air distribution and the salesman recommended I get dampers put on my vents. He then gave me a quote to install 22 dampers on every duct in the house with a cost of $150 per damper and it was a multi-thousand dollar quote. I agreed to have them do the work. They sent their installers and did a nice job and they said I only needed 4-6 dampers, not 22 dampers. So I called back the salesman and I told him I would like to re-negotiate the quote. He said they don't itemize the quotes and I even called the higher up and they would never itemize the quotes for me. If I only needed 4 dampers I wanted to pay for what I only needed. He agreed to take a small amount off the quote and then agreed to throw in a 1 year $500 value service contract for free. I still wanted more money off the work because I did agree to the quote but didn't find out I needed far less dampers than he originally quoted. I thought they were over charging me about $1000. When it was all said and done I was unhappy. It came time to use the $500 free service which was the Gold Service and they said there was a hold on that and I couldn't use it. I found the salesman was completely dishonest. The installers were very good. Whoever was calling the shots seemed to be fraudulent. I think they tried to cheat me and I would never use them again for anything. During the dispute I called four times. Finally someone who called themselves a Sales Manager, who knew nothing, said he'd get back with me and they never did. I did finally receive several calls from the salesman, approximately 6 months later, I never returned any calls because I didn't want to deal with them because I paid their entire bill minus about $100. Although I felt I over charged I learned a lesson and moved on.
Description of Work: I asked them to install and they did install a new air conditioning system with an outside compressor, inside evaporator and all new piping.

I had water coming up through the drain in my basement when I took showers, did laundry, etc. The first guy showed up on time, assessed the situation, and gave my a price. As this was a new house I did not know where the main cleanout was located and as the guy was not able to locate it, he found a 2" valve attached to a 2 inch pipe somewhere in my basement and told me that this would work just fine. He snaked the line as best as he could but the water wouldn't really drain from my basement. While telling me that he was going to have to pull a toilet to access a pipe large enough to clear the line(which would cost my a couple hundred more dollars), someone accidentally flushed a toilet upstairs which forced opened the sewer line enough to make the water in the basement drain. He assured me that he had done enough and the line was now clear. He also sold me some foaming powder to flush down the line to kill roots that were in the line. I'm positive that I used the foaming powder as directed(He suggested small amounts in 4 flushes, I think I used 6 flushes to get it down) but I still completely flooded my bathroom and hallway as the line was obviously not clear enough to accept that much foam. I'm pretty sure that the fact that the line wasn't actually cleared caused the foam to go the only place it could as it expanded, back towards me. Two weeks later my skin broke out in a terrible rash that I only assume had to do with the poisonous foam that I got all over me that night. I was furious that night because not only did the foam not work, but next time I did a load of laundry the basement flooded again. I'm still cleaning and disinfecting my bathroom and hallway area because I'm worried about my dog getting into the poisonous residue, but I've had absolutely zero problems with my sewer line or new drain cap. I called the company back and they sent a different person out that night. This new person located my main cleanout valve immediately and assured me that he would not have to pull a toilet and charge me extra to clean the sewer line. He actually laughed at the fact that the other guy tried to do the job on a 2" line. He was apologetic and told me the previous person was new to the company. He cleaned my line correctly and professionally and didn't charge me a thing. He pulled a lot of stuff out of the line(rags, hair, slime) that the previous guy never pulled out, which to me meant that the 1st guy didn't even come close to completely cleaning the line. He installed a plastic yellow cap over the valve as he broke the previous, old cap when trying to remove it. Three weeks later, while doing random work in the basement, I step on that plastic yellow cap and it falls with no resistance straight down into the drain pipe. I can't even see the cap when looking down into the pipe and I can tell water is draining slower than usual. I call the company again and guy #2 comes back out to take a look. I wish I knew this guys name because he was incredible. We tried many different things to get this cap either down and out into the sewer or back up towards us. Eventually after over an hour of intense pulling on the cap with an incredibly strong piece of wire I can stick my arm down there and grab the cap to pull it back up. Late at night doing this very physically difficult job was not easy and when it came time to charge me I was definitely worried. But the guy only charged me for using the camera to inspect the pipe which was a minimal cost compared to what I was prepared for. He replaced the yellow cap with a much more advanced locking cap that would not slip.
Description of Work: Cleaned out my main sewer line. Failed. Cleaned it out again. Came back a third time to retrieve a foreign item from the sewer line.
