Aleda and Bill Posladek are the founders of A.B. May. They purchased May Furnace Company in 1959. They renamed it A.B. May A for Aleda and B for Bill and set out to offer Kansas City comfort and top quality service with a few employees and four trucks. Over the years we have expanded to offer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, and Appliance repair services. In the mid-1970’s we pioneered one of the first homeowner warranties in the industry. Today, we give thousands of Kansas City homeowners a plan for home repairs through our Home Warranties for home buyers and our Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value service plans. It has been a month now, so far looks excellent.
Description of Work: Dave Powell and his crews: Stan & Jeff did an outstanding job meeting my requirements to the best so far. I took the quotes for new AC/Furnace installation from few top vendors and talked to all of them in details. I took some time and analyzed all the options and points from every vendor. Then Dave Powell pretty much covered everything I needed within the price. He did climb up the Attic for the load calculation. He never insisted me to take his service. He was very polite and professional, and he sent his crews: Stan and Jeff, both the are very nice to work with. They made sure all the details were done before they left. I would highly recommend Dave Powell and his team for any AC installation job from AB May.

Our system is amazingly wonderful. The utility bills have never been as low as they've been since they put the system in. The system runs quietly and efficiently. I worked with Pat and Trent. I highly recommend AB May for anyone looking for heating and cooling needs.

Have a home warranty through AB May. Shortly after moving in our refrigerdator stopped working. It was flipping the breaker. Called AB May. They sent out an electrical tech who said we needed to upgrade the electrical system for either $110 or $300. Started the work without authorization. Stopped him, made him undo the work. Called the main office Requested an appliance tech. Appliance tech came out for no additional fee found that the motor wasn't working properly on the fridge. Repaired for no additional cost. You have to stay on top of their techs, but if you do, you will get the job done. Also have twice a year a/c and heat serviceing through AB May. Had them service AC unit so far. It is running much better.

For 20 years since I bought this house, I have been using AB May services. Along this line, I cannot compare them with other company due to our long business connection. Price, I think they are competitive with other people. They have done a smart job.
Description of Work: I used AB May for my AC repair and furnace services. I have maintenance agreement for air conditioning and furnace stuff so they come twice a year to check things out and you can call them for an abrupt maintenance service, but I have not encounter that yet. They did my air conditioning maintenance probably in May.

I would have used them but the technician that was at my home said that my unit’s compressor was under warranty and he was not sure the warranty could be honored. They were not sure they would be able to honor the warranty and he said if they did do the work that it would be around $800. He advised me that I would need to call his boss to see if the warranty could be honored and to get a definite price for the work. When he left I called his boss and he was gone for the day so I just called Sears. I do not have anything against this company and I probably would have used them but he could not give me a price.
Description of Work: They came out for a diagnostic call to see what was wrong with my A/C unit.

No one likes a costly home update...but when you can get service and quality like I experienced today - it truly was painless. My ABMay experience started out with the Customer Rep, Brad- who was exceptional. He listened to my needs- both short term and long term and didn't try and sell me anything I didn't need. I felt comfortable and trusting of Brad during the first 5 minutes of our initial meeting. On installation day, Brian and Jason appeared on my doorstep with smiles and firm handshakes. They were quick with their work- but took the time to explain everything. I am telling you- these guys were THE BEST. They were happy and positive and appeared to be happy to be at work. Brian even sings while he works!!! And he sings on key!!! With temps over 100, they never appeared sour or upset - they actually seemed happy to be here doing their jobs in this heat! I would have these guys over for a BBQ! They arrived right on time and even finished 3 hours early!! I have no doubt that I will call on AB May for many of my home needs. They are truly one of the best!!!

I appreciate the difficulties now that older plumbing presents. This experience was not the best (I've had good work done by the HVAC and electrical technicians) but would use them again.
Description of Work: Follow-up from my 6/29 review. Repairs were made to a corroded pipe connecting to the shut off valve on the line that was initially repaired on 6/18. Everything has worked out. The system in the house was cobbled together over 60 years and is unforgiving but the company worked until everything was corrected.

I contacted AB May for possible replacement of my home's AC and furnace. Because AB May has a good reputation and came highly recommended by a co-worker, I expected to be impressed. And I was impressed for the first 60 minutes. The last 3 minutes, however, were a huge disappointment. Here is what happened: The salesman showed up as planned and conducted what appeared to be a fairly thorough assessment of my home's heating and cooling needs. He suggested some improvements unrelated to replacement of equipment, which I appreciated. He then proposed a complete package, which may have priced correctly but which was way more than I was willing to spend. We then talked about some lower-priced alternatives, which were more in line with what some of my neighbors have recently spent on AC replacement. However, as soon as the salesman realized that I might not buy a system today, he was very eager to leave. As best I can recall, his words were "if you're not going to buy today, I need to go see someone who will". This happened after only one hour, including only about 15 minutes talking about pricing. He also stated that his next call was to an existing AB May customer (unlike me), and "gotta take care of our AB May customers". I made sure that the AB May salesman knew that he was pulling the plug on our meeting, not me. To be truthful, we had just gotten to point in our discussion where I understood a little about the lower-priced equipment being proposed (without the benefit of any literature) and AB May's price. I feel there was at least a 50/50 chance that I would have purchased a system from AB May; maybe not today, but within 2 days (1 of them a holiday). By his impatience, AB May's salesman effectively killed any chance of a sale. It would be interesting to know whether, by giving up on me so quickly, he gained a sale today from his existing "AB May customer". AB May won't get a sale from me, unless they send someone else.

Serviceman was punctual and professional. Had to leave to get parts but this is normal. Furnace worked great for the rest of the winter.

Leaking pipe was replaced. A flexible plastic line was installed. Immediately the hot water on that line had a very low flow volume. The technician said this was common when replacing galvanized pipe (scale and corrosion break lose and clog the line temporarily). It didn't clear up so I examined the work. The plastic line was not cut to fix and had a kink in it that was restricting the flow. The technician made at $441 bid to replace the rest of the line to the faucet when the real problem was that the work was not done correctly in the first place.

Member, Thank you for your feedback in regards to the plumbing service at your home. We regret the inconvenience caused you by the poor workmanship on you first service call. Your information is of extremely high value to us. That being said, it appears that we have come back to the house and corrected the kinked tubing, installing an elbow fitting to properly restore the flow of hot water to that area. It is true that, whenever dealing with galvanized water piping, pressure may be lost as a result of rust and corrosion being disturbed in the water pipes as pressure is relieved and restored to make a repair. It is good advice to eliminate any and all galvanized water pipes in your home if and when your budget allows but be assured that until that takes place, any leaks that may occur in the older water pipes will be covered by your AB May Home Warranty. Please accept my deepest apologies for the inconvenience that this issue has caused and we look forward to the opportunity to regain your confidence by providing much improved service in the future. I would rate him highly and I would use him again in the future and I have to since I have a contract with them.

No one wants to spend money replacing heating and air systems in their home, but AB May made the experience as painless as possible. Our sales consultant, Pat, did a fabulous job of providing us with options and allowing us to make the decision that was right for our home without any high pressure tactics. The installation was very professional and our experience since has been very good. Overall a great experience.

Overall, I was very pleased with this particular service call. I think the main reason was because of this particular plumber. I wish I could remember his name. Josh or Jason maybe. He made the experience a very positive one. I trusted his opinion and felt like he treated us like real people and not just a job. I've had two other AB May service calls - one for electric and the other was a plumber. They also were very nice but I think the price was really high on the electric bid.
Description of Work: We had two pipes that had a gas leak. The plumber fixed the pipes and went above and beyond to even move the turn off value on one of the pipes. He also assisted us with running new water pipes for the downstairs bathroom. The work was very neat and he gave us options as to how he could do it with the difference in price of each option. He also helped us install a sink and gave us advice on some of the appliances we had. Very professional, nice and easy to work with. I would use that particular plumber again. But I don't think you get a choice with which AB May plumber comes out.

Professional arrived put on shoe covers to enter the home, made an inspection, went to his car wrote an estimate and talk to my husband.
Description of Work: Very professional and gave us a fair estimate. My parents used AB May for the A/C and were very happy with the price and service they received. I only received an estimate still waiting on A/C to complete break down before replacing.

The did a great job, and have given me nothing but excellent service. I would highly recommend their gold plan, which allows 24 hour emergency service, and prompt attention when needed. It also covers just about every service you may need for your home.

Scott was professional, courteous and knowledgeable and helped me make the decision that was best for me. He even came back and checked on the work on the day the air conditioner was installed. The installers were knowledgeable, friendly and courteous. Every time an AB May employee walked into my house, they covered their shoes to protect my carpet. They answered all my questions without being condenscending. I forgot to write this review at the time of installation and recently had a check-up on my air conditioner by them, as per their agreement. My experience with this technician was the same--he was professional, courteous, and friendly. This company has won a customer for life not only because of the product, but more importantly how they treat people. I would readily recommend this company to anyone. To have a positive experience happen a year later tells me that this company is doing something right!
Description of Work: Air conditioner quit working. It was over 25 years old and I had to get a new one. This came shortly after having to replace my roof a few months earlier. AB May came out and I got a professional quote. After researching on Angie's List, I chose 3 companies and my final choice was AB May. They sent Scott out to give me an estimate and he was professional, knowledgeable and courteous. I received a written quote. Their price wasn't exactly the cheapest--but it wasn't far off. They removed and hauled off the old air conditioner and installed the new one in about half a day. Recently 05/30/2012, I received a maintenance call to inspect the air conditioner as per their agreement and everything was fine.

During my fall check, the technician noted I needed a new part. He ordered it and then I scheduled a date for it to be installed. The part that had been ordered was wrong and I wasted an entire morning off work because of it. This happened two more times and I finally just told him to forget the part since it couldn't possibly be that crucial if they couldn't even find the right part in the order catalog. I have not used AB May again.

The sales rep called & confirmed about 1 hour before appt & said he might be 15 minutes late, he ended up being around 45 minutes late. I had a question about the bid a few days later & called & left a message. I ended up having to call him back a couple days later. I ended up going with AB May because it was the better product. He said that he would get the install set up, I had to call him back a couple days later to see when it was going to be so I could request time off of work. It seem like if I had not called to check for the date I would not have know when it would be until the day before when the office called to confirm or he had not gotten it set up until after I called again. The rep called the day before and asked me if I wanted to mail the check or have him pick it up. I said I could get it in the mail the next day, which put me off a little bit since I had not gotten the product yet. Then he was asking how everything was working, that threw me some but I the week before when I called about getting the appt set up I said my old one was not working that good. When I said that I had not gotten it yet, he was kind a little nicer. The installers got here on time & it took most of the day, they were nice & professional. After they left it took a while for my house to cool off but it had gotten pretty warm during the day so I did not think that much of it. The next day after I got home it was warm but I had the temp go up when I was gone so I thought it was cooling off. Later I realized it was not cooling off & had gotten warmer. When we went to bed which was pretty late it still was not cool & I turned it off thinking the outside was cooler & opened the windows The next morning I turned it back on & it cooled it off. Went to work & after I got home the same thing as the night before. I called the office & got the answering service. They said someone would call me in the morning, since I don't have any medical problems. I called the rep & he seemed to care less that I was having a problem & asked if I called the main office. He did call back later & had me check a couple things & then said well have a good night (like that would happen in a hot house) & that they would get it fixed tomorrow. I hope he had a comfortable night.

I have a plan with them for my applicances. They put my AC, furnace and water heater in for me 6 years ago. They come every six months to check on these now, and they even do my plumbing. They cover all my appliances. The $60 a month is absolutely worth the money.

Our home warranty was upgraded to a "gold" coverage for a year at a discount. After the 12 months it is understandable for the monthly rate to increase to the undiscounted fee... An increase of about 40%. However, AB May increased the rate one month early, and when asked about the premature rate increase the customer service rep admitted the error and promised to give a credit. No credit occurred. So on the fourth call, and after a half hour of arguing with me the customer service supervisor finally listened to my question and acknowledged the previous billing error. I asked for my policy to be terminated and she refused at first, demanding that I make that request in writing. I refused to do so and repeated my request for an immediate refund of the previous month's overcharge and immediate termination, which she agreed to after arguing for a half hour. I have not yet received the refund of the overbilling. I have no problems at all with the excellent technical service.
