Aleda and Bill Posladek are the founders of A.B. May. They purchased May Furnace Company in 1959. They renamed it A.B. May A for Aleda and B for Bill and set out to offer Kansas City comfort and top quality service with a few employees and four trucks. Over the years we have expanded to offer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, and Appliance repair services. In the mid-1970’s we pioneered one of the first homeowner warranties in the industry. Today, we give thousands of Kansas City homeowners a plan for home repairs through our Home Warranties for home buyers and our Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value service plans. I was at work and received a call that they were "on their way and would be there in about 20-30 minutes. That was around 2:00pm. I got home at 2:30. And waited. And waited. And called them back, at around 3:00pm, asking where their tech was. They told me that he was coming from a place in KS (I live in MO) and would be there soon. Apparently the dispatcher lives in magic land, or has no idea of how far my location was from a location 40+ miles away. Anyway, I was less than happy when the tech finally arrived. I explained to him the problem and told him that I had to go back to work to wrap things up and that I would be back in 35 minutes. When I came back, he started talking about some technical things that he thought were wrong with my A/C (most of which were above my head). He told me that he had done some things and that it should work, but it didn't sound like he had actually made any repairs. He left and 2 hours later my A/C, which had started blowing cooler air (still not cold), reverted back to blowing warm air. By now it was after hours and I was REALLY not happy! I called back and told them that the problem which I originally called about on Sunday (and supposedly fixed 2 hours ago) had not been handled. They told me that they would TRY and get someone out there before dark, but it they were unable to, it would be the next day before they could come back. Already hot and unhappy, I watched TV and when darkness fell, decided that no one would be coming to help me that night. However, at 10:00 pm, a wonderful, dedicated employee had decided to come and give it a go. He worked for more than an hour, in the dark, and rectified what the first employee blew off. He apologized for the first employee and said that the unit that I had was "builder grade", which means (of course) that it was the cheapest thing they could put in. He suggested that I consider replacing the unit, as it was not in good shape and would more than likely break down again before too long. It has, however, run fine since he fixed it. This is not the usual service that I had grown accustomed to from AB May, and I'm not sure WTH happened. I have a home warranty through them and have had for several years. I did receive a call from their customer service rep the next day and she tried to make amends, promising to reimburse me for the $60.00 that I had spent on the semi-annual service less than a month prior to the break down. I have yet to see that. I am going to replace the A/C, but I'm not sure if I will use them. I am currently getting bids from several companies, including AB May. We'll see how it goes.
Description of Work: A/C broke down on a Sunday night. Called to make an appointment for ASAP. Not surprisingly, they said they would be there the next day. Explained that I wouldn't be home, but to call when they were on the way, so I could meet them.

We called them as our AC is steadily trying to become a heater, when told that it would be Monday, we explained that because we have a 90 year old family member in the household we would need a quicker response and did they have any referral. The lady on the line said "no you just call around" and then literally hung up on my husband. Not very professional phone manners and we won't be calling again. I had no problem with them not being able to help - I understand it is a very busy season, I do have an issue with being hung up on. I did "call around" found a very responsive local competitor, they put us on the list for same day service due to our situation, did a discount for first time use and we in turn purchased the maintenance plan they offered. Had the AB May phone rep been well mannered we most likely would have considered them in the future as we used them when we lived in KC in the past.

I would like to say that my technician was friendly, knowledgeable and very responsive when I asked questions. I felt he tried everything he could to assist in making sure that I had a functioning air conditioner. He made sure that the Consultation group came out right away to discuss the purchase of a new central air unit. He also verified for me some credits that I would be receiving upon the purchase of a unit.
Description of Work: This company was the only company to respond to my emergency phone call. The technician worked on my central air unit for several hours verifying the functioning of the unit, establishing the deficiencies and where they were at, never once talking about me needing a new unit, until the very end of his trouble shooting (I was with him the whole time).

My experience overall went very well the last time they came to our home. They made us aware of another problem and they were able to come out the next day to fix it. We have used them several times and we have always been very pleased.

The vendor representative arrived on time, presented himself and the company professionally. He declined to provide a written estimate at the conclusion of his inspection, offering delivery of the bid(s) by Friday. The bids arrived by email, 4 days later than promised. Instead of quoting the equipment and brand we asked about, he quoted equipment he selected. AN unsatisfactory quote event. We have selected another vendor for our replacement project.
Description of Work: We contacted the vendor for a quote on replacement of our 22 yr-old furnace and 20 yr-old air conditioner.

Alisha (#825) was very professional and did a thorough home inspection and servicing of my AC unit. Alisha showed up on time and wore protective booties when inside the house. She did awesome at explaining all the services included and answered all of my questions. Hoping I won't have to use the service plan, but that if I do I will get as good a service as I did with Alisha.
Description of Work: I signed up for their Gold Service plan and a tech was sent to do a home inspection and service my ac unit.

The person who gave me the quote came out on time and did measurements and took pictures. After reviewing his information the actual installer wanted to come onsite to review the work before finishing the quote. It took a bit more time to get that scheduled, but in the end he came out. He was very informative and I felt the work he wanted to do to fix our air flow problem was more comprehensive than the bids I got from other HVAC companies. I was a bit disappointed in how long it took to get the quote (several weeks), but once we got the quote and approved the job they were able to come out within a week to perform the work. It was all done in a day, they took out the old duct work and cleaned up the area nicely. After they were done the airflow to the first floor of the house was 200% better.
Description of Work: Replaced board duct in basement with sheet metal duct.

AB May service man arrived and explained that with my washer model Maytag Neptune TL FAV6800A that with the problem I was having there could be only 2 parts causing the problem (also service man said he was the only service man at AB May that serviced these Maytag models). When he checked on his laptop he said that he was unable to order the parts/part I may need.....so he left. I researched my washer model and ordered a new Clutch Pulley Online at AppliancePartsPros.com.......after part arrived I installed part and my washer has been running great ever since. I had never worked on a washer in my life.....so I am unsure why a company that does this everyday would be unable to fix it.
Description of Work: Maytag Neptune TL washer kept spinning off balance at beginning of spin cycle.......AB May service provider came to home but no service was performed.

Because Maytag would have performed the service for free, we did not present you with a bid for repair. We apologize, but assumed that you would prefer to have Maytag address the issue. Also, please keep in mind that after your factory warranty expires, any of our technicians can perform service on your particular model if it needs repair. We had another company tell us that our A/C was critically low on R-22 refrigerant (at least 10lbs, $700+) and that we basically needed a new A/C unit ASAP or it would freeze up and not work at all. They were very pressuring so we called ABMay and they came out to look at our A/C. They said it was a little low but nothing to be concerned about. He said that honestly, he could go to any one of our neighbors and their A/C would probably be about the same pressure as ours. He said that the A/C unit, although old, was fine and we should get some more use out of it. He said we probably needed a couple pounds of coolant and that was all. They were so nice and honest and gave us a few options for a new A/C when the time came. Although we went with another company (not the first one!) I liked AB May and might use them in the future.

AB May did some plumbing work in my house recently, and performed my annual air conditioner check-up. As always, they did a great job. The company offers service contracts to their customers, which provide various levels of coverage. I purchased their gold contract and have always been very pleased with the quality and professionalism of their work.

We have a home owner's warranty plus contract with this company. The first time we called them the day before Christmas (2012) to fix a clogged drain, they said they could not come for 2 or 3 days as they were short of help. Even though our contract states service within 24 hours/7 days a week including holidays. Very disappointed in their lack of response and had to call another company to fix the drain. We have a fixed $60.00 per service call fee, covering up to $2,000.00 in repairs/replacement per occurence. THIS time when we had our central air go out on 5/15/13, they responded SAME day. Sent a trained, friendly tech. We were very pleased with their service and plan to continue our contract. This is what we expect from A B May and feel what happened in December was an exception and not the rule of their usual manner of business.

AB May called to let me know they were on their way during the agreed upon window time. He came and immediately disconnected and capped my gas stove. He capped it in such a way that if my new stove is 1/2 or 3/4 inch I will be able to hook it up. He then went to the basement to put a valve on my water inlet to regulate the pressure which was too high. He did this and then was checking it via the wash machine when he found that the washer was unable to correctly drain into the major sewage pipe. He had to call in and see if he could stay as this was a major issue. He started working on it and had to even leave and get parts. It was a smelly, dirty job and totally unexpected. He did an excellent job and went above and beyond. I really appreciate it as there would have been a worse problem down the line if it had not been caught and corrected now. Steve Thompson was the name of the technician and I highly recommend him. I have used AB May for many things. I got a home warranted with a house I just purchased but had used them before. While I think the prices are high I don't think they are any higher than anyone else although I don't like having to pay the "service call" every time you call them out. I do recommend them. I've used their HVAC service also.
Description of Work: Provider was called out to cap off gas line on a gas stove that was being replaced and to put a valve on whole house water due to high pressure. He also ended up having to replace a part of a major water/sewer pipe.

First service call, service person blamed plumbing. Second call plumber installed new valve. Third call actually resolved problem and installed new icemaker. This wasn't the most efficient service due to two service calls that didn't resolve problem. Third service call was excellent with great service and great service person.

Brett Sharp came out to evaluate our system and gave us lots of options. We took the lower price one simply because we do not know how long we will be living in the home. That said, we contracted for a high quality, two stage furnace. The install was difficult, because the motor was bad and caused loud vibration noises that we heard that night. Mike, the service supervisor, personally came over twice during the install day to check how things were going. He was fantastic!! He solved our kitchen ventilation problem by installing an appropriate register where the return was. He also diagnosed air flow problems in the basement and replaced the ceiling registers! These were all at no extra charge! When the new unit began making noises, I called Mike on his cell phone. He sent a senior tech out who determined that the motor may have been defective. He also advised not using the media filter, for which I had paid $400. I never expect things to be perfect. But it is so refreshing to have a company respond immediately to every detail. They really valued my business and wanted to make it right!! The next day, a tech came out and repaired the motor and the loud humming noise in the sheet metal. They have refunded me the $400 for the filter, too. I am SO pleased with my experience with this company and would use them again without reservation.

Another plumber told me I needed the shower cartridge replaced and quoted me $900 for the cartridge (contingent only if I gave them a positive review on Angie's list- otherwise $1,000). I had spent weeks going back and forth on when they could get there and wasn't sure that was a fair price. I called in A.B. May to give me a quote and David Leonard came out and estimated it would be $484. Nearly half the price. The job ended up being a lot more complicated than we thought but they didn't give up. The handle was stuck on and they called several warehouses before finding a replacement. Ended up having to cut off the handle and replace the cartridge, only to find out the entire valve needed to be replaced not just the cartridge. I appreciate that they tried several smaller fixes before going for the expensive but necessary repair. Also had to replace the tub spout because it didn't hold up during the valve process and they discovered that the original installation of the tub spout was leading to water getting in behind my shower wall which I woudln't have known. Despite all these issues they worked for nearly six hours without taking a break and didn't charge me for the cartridge replacement since it wouldn't have been needed if we had done the valve originally. They were polite, on time, helpful, and straight-forward. Normally I find them to be a little on the higher side price wise, but wouldn't say that in this case.

Their estimated cost was correct. Their installation was on time, it woked out as they said it would.

They did an excellent job. We were very, very pleased with their service. They came out to look at everything. They evaluated the situation very thoroughly before they do what they were supposed to do. They did exactly what they said they are going to do. There were some extra things that they thought they might have to do, and they double checked on that. They were not trying to push more on us than we actually needed. The quality of their service was excellent. Their pricing was competitive, and they gave us many different options.

We have been very pleased with our discission to choose AB May. Dan met with us, dicussed our needs and options, scheduled us in and finished the install ahead of time. Our old a/c unit was leaking out and not keeping up. Dan made sure we would stay cool until new unit was installed. Didn't take long, and beyond our expectations. Great company to deal with!
Description of Work: We recieved 5 local estimates for an entire Hi-efficency Amana A/c unit and furnace with humidifier install as well as a new hot water heater, and decided to chose AB May. They gave us the most value for our money. Sevice was Incredible and extremely professional, even after the sale. We would highly recommend Dan LoScalzo and AB May for all your home service needs. These guys do what they say and go that extra mile. Very refreshing. We were so impressed that we also purchased a 10 year Platinum warranty plan that covers our units maintance and service.
