Aleda and Bill Posladek are the founders of A.B. May. They purchased May Furnace Company in 1959. They renamed it A.B. May A for Aleda and B for Bill and set out to offer Kansas City comfort and top quality service with a few employees and four trucks. Over the years we have expanded to offer Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, and Appliance repair services. In the mid-1970’s we pioneered one of the first homeowner warranties in the industry. Today, we give thousands of Kansas City homeowners a plan for home repairs through our Home Warranties for home buyers and our Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Value service plans. In the nearly 60 years since our business began, we have grown to employ more than 275 people and taken care of thousands of home repair needs for our friends and neighbors that call Kansas City home. Description of Work: Original call was for furnace not turning on. They were the only company that could come the same day (Saturday) and showed up earlier than originally quoted which was fantastic. Broken DI motor on the furnace and noticed our humidifer was nonfunctional. Service call was $89 and this was applied to the cost of the repair. Ordered a new motor on Saturday, arrived on Monday and installed on Tuesday. $910 total for motor, service call and new HE automatic humidifier installed. The service guy was nice and personable but a little salesman-like, which I can handle. Overall a great experience. This is the second time I've used them (they fixed my washing machine a few weeks ago) and they are my go-to repair company now.

Description of Work: In process selling home and as you know it AC goes out. Had a sellers warranty with AB May with contract so trying to do right thing called them to service unit. Come to find out Coil was leaking, very expensive repair. Knowing this, mentioned to service tech that we may not fix since buyer had full warranty coverage and we only had up to $500. Was told it was now pre existing condition and he made a note on our house not to cover it in future. So we moved forward with fixing. Went ahead and got other quoters that seemed in line but AB was still higher by a few hundred. Come to find out this price "included" warranty discount. Basically AB marked up their costs to cover this program. Service Mgr Jason Smith was absolutely no help in resolving issue, said I should have read fine print closer and admitted that AB was not price comparable to other companies. He offered no solutions, not to mention it took him several days to even return phone call after I called him 3x. This company which is tied into many local home warranties will knowingly screw you cause they know they can. My situation would have saved me several hundred if I had not used warranty program with AB May and gone with other well known company in area. Either way once tech showed up I was locked into using them. I am very well versed in home repair as I have been in the business a long time, so if they will do this to me, I hate to think what they are doing to others. Before you call them, especially with these home warranty programs, get other quotes first but expect to pay a 50% markup to use them.

Our goal is to create a positive experience for our customers and to take their home service needs. We responded to an A/C out for you while your home was listed and under a Sellers Home Warranty. We did find an irreparable leak of refrigerant in the evaporator coil and showed you a proposal that clearly stated the charges of the diagnostic, evaporator coil replacement cost and a $500 discount from your warranty. The total due was clearly stated on the bottom of the proposal, which you agreed to and signed. We then ordered the coil and returned one week later, allowing plenty of time for you to reconsider using us for this repair. After completion of the repair you paid us with no mention of issue. Your complaint was responded to on the next business day, following a single voicemail that you left. Our pricing is extremely comparable to similar well-known companies in the area, and is checked regularly. We use a flat rate pricing that is not adjusted for different situations. We at A.B. May give the highest quality service, stand 100% behind our work and give exceptional value for our prices. If a customer is dissatisfied with any portion of our service we are more than happy to work it out with them in a conciliatory and friendly manner. Description of Work: I had bought an alarm system that had a internet capable thermostat. That company messed up the wiring at the furnace, blew a fuse and didnt know how to install their own thermostat as their installers never recieved training on these new cutting edge thermostats. They tried twice to fix it and even sent a mgr out and mgr said i could call a hvac co. From angies list i chose AB MAY co. Richard, tech no. 857 showed up on time and listened while i explained how this all came about n then got busy. He was awsome. It was nice to deal with a co that wasnt sending the techs that other companies didnt want and that made things worse. Richard fixed everything and told me all the bad things the alarm co did. It didnt take Richard all day to get it fixed either. The hourly rate was high but they were worth it because it still ended up cheaper and i didnt feel the price was ran up by telling me i need parts that i didnt need. I sing the praises of A.B May co. Thank God fot a co better way to pick a company I know nothing about to come into my home and NOT rip me off. The world is full of dishonest companies, thank you for Angies list. PS. My sister and brother in law are certified and licensed electrictians but live in washington state and cant help me so i know nothing what a hard working and knowlegable electrician should look like...not constantly running to the parts store for parts etc. Im sorry this is long but this is company AND electrician need this story told...they earned it...im a happy customer !

Description of Work: I have had a home warranty with AB May for many years. The copay cost went up as expected, but even with my warranty I was charged for each service, which was suppose to be covered under the home warranty. Loop holes I guess. Even for routine maintence which was suppose to be covered, I was charged additional parts charges if they had to repair anything. Then came the last straw where they were suppose to fix my washer. I did not have appliance coverage so I understood the charges for this. BUT, it took them a month and a half with promises literaly every other day or twice a week that a service man would be out the next day. After I finally got my washer fixed, it broke yet again weeks later. Again I got on the same merry go round about when it would be fixed. The service man took pity on us, fixed our washer the day after the first service call. Only to be called no less than 4 more times from AB May wanting to schedule a time to come out and fix the washer. Clearly, there is no communication in this company. When I complained to the operations manager , he did nothing to resolve my problem when everything started in December, and when I finally said I wanted to cancel my warranty he tells me he cannot do it and gave me a website, happily I might add to call and cancel the agreement. I even spoke with the owner and he was slighty more sympathetic. I have promoted this company for years. Not sure what has happened but I certainly would not recommend them to anyone. Did not arrive at expected times, no communication between employees.

It is always our goal to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations, and we were unable to meet our goal on this occasion. With our Home Warranties, if you would like your washer covered, you are correct that it is an optional item. In this particular instance, the part for your washer was backordered by the manufacturer. Because most appliances do not have universal parts, if a replacement part is needed, the manufacturer physically has to replicate a new one. Unfortunately, the length of time to do that is out of our control. We checked on the status of the part bi-weekly to get an estimated time of arrival. Unfortunately, the part we were waiting on for you kept getting delayed by the manufacturer; they typically base the production of the part on the demand of it. Meaning, they wait until they have enough people that want that particular part until they replicate new ones. We would love for parts to be available when we need them and avoid having our customers wait, but that is not up to us. If there is anything that we can do to gain your confidence back, please give us a call and we would welcome a conversation with you. Thank you.

Description of Work: I have the home warranty program with them on or recently purchased home. Have had to call them in regards to a question when the heat first came on (not used to a heat pump) they explained it to me without making me feel stupid! :) I had to call them out last month in regards to an issue I was having with the furnace. Came out straight away, punctual, clean and professional. Unfortunately the issue I had they could not reproduce while at the home. They fixed what it thought it might be but alas it wasn't. Came out a 2nd time, had to order a part came out 2 days later (due to the weather they had to postpone the installation. Came out replaced the part and it seems to have resolved the issue. Everyone from techs to office staff has been excellent!

That agreement covered preventive maintenance on their air conditioner, furnace and humidifier plus a 15% discount on any repairs that A.B. May performed. A.B. Description of Work: I have used AB May for many years for my plumbing and electrical needs. I have one of their maintenance contracts, which I have found to include adequate disclosure of coverages. They have adhered to the contract terms without wranging. Each time we have called them, they have been prompt and professional. I have gotten more value than I paid for the contract every year within a few months--something that is covered usually breaks. On the items not covered by contract, the pricing has been acceptable. They are not cheap, but neither are they usually most expensive bid I have received when wanting a service not covered by the contract.

Description of Work: Heater wasn't working. Called and they got to me the SAME DAY vs. Midwest Heating who said they it would be late afternoon the next day.. They have a service call charge of $89 vs. Midwest whose service call charge was $99. In the end I had some leaves and debre in the intake line causing the unit to shut down (and not work). The Tech (Shaun) found this in minutes/corrected the issue and was on his way. This Tech was very knowledgable and you could tell "knew" what he was doing.... I will call these folks first going forward.

Description of Work: My 30+ year old air conditioner went out on me during a time when temps were running in the 100's. I made 3 calls to 3 different vendors. A B May was not the lowest nor the highest. What was different was that they were willing to work around my schedule and were able to bring out a temporary air conditioner until I could be home for the installation, which was on a Saturday. I really appreciated this because any time I take off is money I lose. They brought out the temp air conditioner right away and had things cooled down quickly, and removed the old conditioner. The new air conditioner installation went without a hitch and was up and running by 12:00 noon. They showed up on time, were professional, and went above and beyond what they said they would do. They were professional to the point where I felt comfortable leaving them in my house while I ran a short errand. The guys who installed the air conditioner were considerate, informative, and knew their job. My experience with Scott, who sold me the air conditioner, was totally painless. He did not try to sell me something I didn't need, and arranged for financing for me which was very much appreciated. He was totally professional yet conveyed a concern for his customer's needs and issues. He came out on "installation day" and inspected the work being performed. That was very much appreciated! He also told me about their service plans, which I will definitely purchase in the future. Overall, I was left with a secure feeling that the job was done right and that I did not purchase what I did not need. I definitely recommend Scott and his crew at A. B. May for being professionals who show up when they say they will, do an excellent job and leave the customer totally satisfied!

Description of Work: My family had a potential off hours plumbing issue. I called AB May whose availability in the evenings and on weekends is extremely helpful.
