Description of Work: They installed a new self contained high efficiency fireplace. We had a propane log fireplace. I disassembled all of the stonework and framing around the old vent-less system. They come in and helped me carry the old system to the deck. The new fireplace was slightly larger so they had made a frame at their shop based on my measurements and installed it. They also added a raised hearth (my old unit was flush with the floor). Two employees arrived. The were friendly. You might think they were impersonal, but really after our introduction they were focused on getting the job done. I stood back asked occasional questions and took lots of pictures. I appreciated their focus as I was located probably a bit outside their normal business range. If they had gone into a second day costs would have increased. Things went up pretty quick. The frame, new fireplace, external air intake and chimney. When they left, the fire place was ready and I started a fire while they were there to make sure there were no issues. I felt the cost could have been less since I had done so much prep work, but they did everything in the quote. When I reviewed the quote vs the invoice I found an item that I was charged more for on the invoice than I should have been. Victor quickly made the adjustment/correction. He was very friendly with his time and advice on operation of the fireplace both before and after the work was done. The cost did not include new stonework which we have to contract with someone else to complete. Finally, several months after the work was done we got a letter from the Shoppe informing us that the Government had extended tax breaks for our type of fire places and inclosed a certificate that we can use when itemizing our 2015 tax refund.

+ 0 moreIt took a few weeks before they could schedule the install. They said they would try to save the marble around the old fireplace so that we could reuse it, but they couldn't guarantee that they would be able to do this. They were unsuccessful and cracked several pieces, and since we couldn't match it, we needed to replace the marble on the floor surrounding the fireplace as well. We understood that this might happen and were not upset. Other than this, the fireplace install seemed to go fine and was completed in a day. We are still using the fireplace a year later. Immediately after the install, the heat pump on our furnace quit working. The installers couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come back on. Thankfully, iIt is a dual fuel unit with natural gas backup, so we still had heat. The technicians who came out to do the install did not include Victor, who had given us the quote, but he came out himself to check on the situation. He discovered that when the technicians pulled the thermostat wire through to move it, they did not switch off the power, and so short circuited the lines and blew out the compressor on the heat pump. Initially, the Fireplace Shoppe's take on this was that the compressor was old (which was true) and likely to have gone out soon anyway, so they didn't want to take responsibility for the blown compressor. Our take was that it would still be working fine if the technicians had taken the necessary steps. It took a couple of days, but eventually they did what we felt was the right thing and agreed to replace the compressor at their expense. We've been in since and have never been treated badly in any way. I would still recommend them and use them again, but I would want to make sure that they sent their most knowledgeable technicians if anything out of the ordinary was going to be asked of them.
Description of Work: Replaced a small prefab fireplace with a high efficiency wood burning fireplace, including upgrading the chimney to handle the higher temperatures and moving the furnace thermostat from the living room into the hallway.
