DTS Custom Homes

We learned of DTS through their extensive advertising in Joplin after the tornado. We made an appointment and met with one of their salesmen to talk about what we needed in a home. They bragged about their pricing being better than any other home builder in the area and had a showroom full of the products that we could use in our home. We worked with them for about a month designing the plans for our home. They told us the price per square foot for a new construction was $85 per square foot so we started our plans based on that estimate but we quickly noticed that their estimate didn't include anything but very basic (cheap) construction and design. They priced the garage separately from the house and everything was an "add on" or "upgrade." By the time we got an estimate it was about $75,000 more than what we told them our budget was because of the extra charges, not including the lot on which we were to build. They suggested that we scale back our plans and by the time they had our house even close to our budget (still about $15,000 more than our max) they had turned a 2300 square foot house into ~1800 square foot and told us that no one in the restricted subdivision would notice that our house did not meet the minimum square footage. We were very disappointed by this time and, fortunately for us, we got an email when we were getting ready to make our final decision and they simply stated that they had quit doing business in Joplin and they were not going to build our house or any other houses that they didn't currently have under contract. We were frustrated, at first, but DTS quitting turned out to be a blessing in disguise. We found a MUCH better contractor who built our house, all 2302 square feet with a 3 car garage, for around $80,000 less than the bid we received from DTS.
