This has been burning in our lives for a long time obviously. Don Herzing came to my home construction site in late 1998. He walked around my house under construction. He drank one of my beers. We talked about my roof at length. I hired him at that time with my signature and a handshake. If I could take that handshake back I would. We made the mistake of paying the bill after some of the work was completed, IE, the water shield and felt were placed and the roof fields were done but no vents or caps were installed. A few days later Don came by and dropped off the packaged caps. That was the last time we ever saw Don Herzing. He had talked me into a roof product made by a company named ELK. These shingles were just the color we wanted. I ended up on the roof putting on the ridge vents and caps myself. Within weeks or a few short months my roof was falling off in sheets. We tried to get Don Herzing (notice I want you to know his name) to come back and stand behind his work. He would not answer our calls, never contacted us, absolutely no response. As I said we were eventually told by a lawyer that Don Herzing had disbanded his gang of thieves and gone into hiding. Imagine my suprise when I joined Angie's List today and there on page two was his name, not as the owner but on the first line in the text of someone elses review. If you are considering this company I strongly advise against it. We had to tear what was left of that roof off and do a complete new roof. The roof that Don Herzing put on my house was a complete lose. The house was under construction so not one cent from insurance or any other kind of recovery. So THANK YOU WERY MUCH mister DON HERZING.
Description of Work: Don Herzing and three others put part of a roof on my home. As far as I knew I was hiring the man; Don Herzing, to put on a complete roof. He, Don Herzing, turned out to be quite a scammer. When his work turned out to be substandard he hid behind the incorporation laws that we knew nothing about. We started to hire a lawyer, but after a short investigation were told by the lawyer that the company had gone out of business and we could not touch the man, Don Herzing, monitarily.

In the beginning good - that was before they received payment. By an error made by our insurance company, they were paid in full way before the job was complete. The work they did was good quality. However, dealing with them has been an absolute nightmare, not only for us but with our insurance company and mortgage company. All we want is to have them fulfill their contract obligations. I'm sure that won't happen so now we are on the hunt for someone else.
Description of Work: Hired Herzing roofing to complete a roofing and gutters. Don Herzing did an excellent sales job on how involved he personally would be, how professional his team is, how we would not have to worry about trash all over...never believe a aalesperson. That was September 2011. It is now April 2012 and the job is not finished. Roof is complete, house gutters almost complete, no downspouts or finished job. We have had to move the remainging materials he left in our driveway to our own shed, and remove the trash he and he crew left in our driveway. Trying to contact Don or his office Joyce is impossible -- they know our phone numbers now. Continuous promises to come out - sunny days, rainy days -- doesn't matter -- the don't show. He'll even promise "to be there tomorrow" and then no show. We've now had begin the hunt for another contractor to complete the work.

Response from Herzing Roofing Siding & Gutters
We sincerely apologize to (member) for the obvious miscommunication that ultimately lead to this complaint. We have spoken to (member) numerous times and we absolutely do not avoid any of his phone calls as he has claimed. We answer our phones 24X7 and if we miss any calls, we retrieve all messages promptly. We have communicated with him that the only way we could get the job done for this price was to bulk order metal for gutters and downspouts. We have told him numerous times that we were ordering his copper materials with another job to get the discounted price. He was made aware of this verbally before signing the contact and he agreed. We will have his project completed in accordance with the contract by May 15. We will install 4” round copper downspouts on the house, the front porch, the bay window and on the side porch. We will install 6” aluminum K-style gutters and 3X4 aluminum downspouts on the rear porch. Regarding side trim, the contract specifically stated: “ALL SIDING MUST BE REMOVED TO ACCEPT NEW ROOF FLASHING ON PORCHES. THIS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER.” We will not be replacing trim that was removed on the porches as this is the responsibility of (member). Regarding lighting rod system, the contract specifically states: “REMOVE AND RESET EXISTING LIGHTNING ROD SYSTEM WRAP COPPER WIRE AT THE COPPER AND ALUMINUM JUNCTION, INSTALL UNDER NEW RIDGE CAP ON HIPS AND RIDGES. ANY ADDITIONAL SECTION OF WIRE AND JUNCION THAT NEED TO BE PURCHASED IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE OWNER. WE DO RESEVE THE REIGHT TO GO BACK TO THE INSURACNE COMPANY FOR BENEFITS TO COVER CHANGING THE COPPER WIRE TO ALUMINUM WIRE.” We installed the new lightning rod system under the ridge cap as per our contract. We will not install any additional sections of wire or junctions as these are the responsibility of (member). We did go back to the insurance company for additional funds to change from copper to aluminum for (member) which resulted in more money going to (member), but no additional money for Herzing Roofing. Regarding siding on roof dormer, the contact specifically states: “REMOVE AND INSTALL NEW CONCRETE SIDING AND WATER BARRIER ON ROOF DORMER.” We did install new siding and water barrier on the roof dormer, however, as we did not prime nor paint any of the other siding on the house it was neither written or implied on our contract that we would prime, paint or caulk the siding on the dormer. Before we began this project, (member) agreed that all painting would be done after the roof was complete. As a favor to (member), we put the fist coat of paint on siding and trim for dormers; he was concerned about temperatures being too cold for his crew to paint. Regarding damages from flying debris; we had spoken with (member) prior to starting this project and the siding was to be painted AFTER the existing roof was removed to avoid damage from debris. He agreed this was the best plan of action. However, when we arrived on the job, he had painters painting the siding on the day he required we be there. We called him repeatedly to have his painters stop until we finished removing the shake shingles. According to (member), there was damage to the “sheen” of the paint on the siding, not damage to the paint or the siding itself. Per our original discussions prior to signing the contract, (member) was informed that the shake shingle removal would be very dusty and dirty due to the shake shingles being 100 years old, that’s why painting was to be done after removal of the roofing, that’s why our contract stated we would cover attic floor with plastic, which we did and we vacuumed the attic after roof removal. Regarding the chimney caps; (member) did not agree to pay the extra $250 per caps, so we did not install the chimney caps. As with the numerous other tasks, he wanted the chimney caps done for free. We did not agree to “swap” the chimney caps for any presumed paint damage. This was his idea and we did not in any way agree to this. We told him numerous times that we could make the chimney caps at an additional charge which he verbally agreed to, but he did not sign a change order. Our solution: Because we do want our customers to be not only satisfied, but happy with our company, we agree to install fascia metal prior to installing the 6” K-style gutters on back porch at no charge to (member). This amounts to approximately $822 in materials and labor, which is more than the $750 he was asking for in chimney caps. Other: We are the fourth contractor (that we are aware of) that has worked on this project. We were told that all of these contractors have left, refusing to return, because (member) is both hard to work with and is continually pulling workers from their assigned tasks and trying to get them to do tasks that are not on the contacts. We have dealt with this same issue for the entire duration of this project. Our company prides itself on doing the best thing for the customer and we typically do minor additional work at no charge. However, for the remainder of this project, we will complete only what we are contractually required to do plus install the fascia on the rear porch, if (member) is agreeable to this solution.

They put the roof on several days after the agreed time, however from what I can tell the roof itself looks fine. The problem is they left the house in a dismal state. There was trash all over the yard (nails, roofing materials, bags, etc.). The gutter guards were tossed on the ground and not replaced. While annoying we were not going to raise a fuss over it, however, they left a big piece of flashing in a tree and dislodged a piece of guttering from a downspout so if it rained the water would rush into our covered porch. We called Herzing about this. At first they tried to claim the guttering was not their fault until I pointed out the guttering was fine until the roof was replaced (and besides which the home inspection would have noted it). They aggreed to send someone out to look at it. Twice someone said they would come and did not show up. After I called for the third or fourth time someone did come by to remove the flashing and apparently did an inspection of the roof. . When I came home the flashing was removed however the gutter had not been fixed. I called Herzing. The woman was discourteous saying she didn't know what I was talking about and again tried to say it wasn't their fault. We offered to send her pictures (even though we specified more than once exactly where the damage was) and did so via text. She never got back to us. I called and left two voicemails and still nothing. After more than a week we rented a ladder, bought some guttering, and did the repair ourselves. We've complained to the BBB about this, which is a shame since the repair would have taken them less than 15 min to fix. While the roof looks fine, in summary we feel this company lacks professionalism and has poor customer service.
Description of Work: Roof replacement. We recently bought a new house. As part of the agreement the seller replaced the roof via her insurance company. Herzing Roofing was hired for the job. To updgrade to architectural shingles we paid Herzing approx. $350.00.

This company met with my insurance adjuster and gave me an estimate on a new roof. It was several weeks before I was able to talk to a rep of the company. At that point they told me the amount authorized was extremely low. After several weeks, some unreturned phone calls and conflicting statements from the provider they wanted to charge me $3000 more than the insurance company had authorized.
