They came out and did an inspection of the hot water heater venting and flue and found an issue with the vent pipe (it was installed backwards, which wasn't serious, but certainly not optimal). He corrected the problem and rechecked everything and it was working well within the tolerances.

A+++ He was on time, courteous, and very clean! You couldn't even tell he'd been there when complete as he was so clean with all the tools and all he removed from it. He had come a few weeks prior to clean the chimney (much in need of it) and that is when the crack was discovered. I would recommend him highly! They called the day before to confirm the appointment and were very friendly and courteous!

It would have been last Fall or last winter for a new damper, I think that's what it is, at the top of the chimney. It was to replace the crown at the top of the chimney. It was great, they provided a solution for our damper closing and we didn't want it to close and repaired the crown and they replaced it. I was satisfied with the price, I don't know how competitive it was or anything, they're the only one I talked to.

I can't say enough great things about this company! From the first time I spoke with them at the office, to the thorough inspection & explanation of what needed to be repaired to the actual work itself, it was a complete pleasure and relief to be in such professional hands. I have already recommended them to my friends and will use them in the future for their other services as well.

We needed our chimney swept, inspected, and a bid on repairing the chimney brick and mortar repair on the roof. Fast, clean, superior inspection internally with camera and written report. Very professional and knowledgeable. Only advising on necessary replacement of brick, knowledgeable on sealants to prevent damage of remaining brick instead of just replacing the whole thing. Wonderful with our kids and pets curiosity as well, explaining and telling fun stories. We found our chimney team! Thank you, Buddy.

I called several companies trying to schedule a time to have my 2 fireplaces cleaned and chimenys inspected. Also, my dryer vent was clogged and in need of service and cleaning. From other companies, I got a voice mail and no return call, or they didn't do dryer vents, or they weren't able to do the work for over a month! But when I called Hearthmasters, I spoke with a very nice woman, who answered all of my questions, and gave me pricing over the phone. We booked an appointment for the first part of the following week. The day of the appointment, they actually came early, and spent all the time necessary to do the work. My son worked with the technician, as I was at work, and he could not stop raving about what a nice guy and wonderful job he did. Both fireplaces were video inspected, cleaned and he assured us that both were in excellent working condition. No trying to upsell, which is refreshing. And they actually came in a bit under what they quoted. Now that's they way I wish all businesses operated! I will definitely be using Hearthmaster in the future.

When I first called and made an appointment for Gene to inspect my chimney (for $60) I told him birds had recently fallen down the chimney and the screens at the top of it would probably need to be replaced. Since I didn't need to be home for this because it was exterior work only, Gene said he would come at a time when I was out of town. I returned home after being out of town for 10 days. I called Gene to find that he forgot about inspecting the chimney. I made arrangements for what would be the 2nd appointment for him to inspect and repair. After the appointment his office called me and said Gene was unable to access the roof or the top of the chimney because I have a 2-story house and the top of the chimney is another 10 feet above the roof. He could come back with more ladder and a co-worker for $140. They wanted me to pay the $60 for the 2nd appointment in which Gene showed up and nothing was done. I protested the $60 and they waived it. I made arrangements for what would be the 3rd appointment. I re-iterated the screens would probably need to be replaced. Gene and his co-worker showed up and inspected the exterior chimney. He said the screens would need to be replaced (something I said in all my previous phone calls with him). He was in a hurry and needed to leave right away, but would return for a 4th appointment and $180 to replace the screens. I asked Gene: If you weren't in a hurry and would have replaced the screens during this visit, would you be charging another $180? After a long pause, he said he'd get back to me on that. Oh, and he said, he didn't have the screening with him (even though I repeatedly told him in phone calls the screening would need to be replaced). Gene left and a few days later his office emailed me his report. In part, his report said that federal regulations prohibited him from making any repairs or alterations on my chimney, i.e. replacing the screening. What I got for $140: NOTHING. After the debacle with Gene and his company, I purchased an Angie's List deal for $89 and arranged for Brandon of All Source Chimney Service LLC (913-232-3725) to come out and do a video inspection and chimney sweep. Brandon was awesome! Please see my review of his company. I didn't tell him of my experience with Gene. In short, Brandon did the video inspection, sweep and replaced the screens on my chimney. All in one visit for the $89. I gave him a tip because of his professionalism and great personality. I got for $89 from Brandon in one visit what Gene would have charged $380 in four visits. Don't waste your time or money with this company.

Response from HearthMasters Inc
At our first visit it was apparent that it would take two men and two ladders to reach the top of the chimney, which is 10' above the roof line. At our second visit we did a Level I inspection of the chimney system and found that this is a prefabricated Majestic brand fireplace that is U.L. listed. It is AGAINST CODE to install screen or make any alterations to the chimney caps, as to do so could be a FIRE HAZARD. We informed the homeowner of the situation, and also that prefabricated chimneys that were manufactured at that time were designed to last 10-15 years and need to be replaced after that time. We also found that this triple wall chimney system are showing signs of wear and tear and are rusting. We also found that the cap design was poor, which would allow birds to enter the interior and that the likelihood of flammable nesting material being between the chimney walls was high, based on our experience with these types of chimneys, and that this was a potential fire hazard. I did research on this product for the homeowner and found that Majestic was bought out by Monessan Hearth Systems Company in 2008 and that they no longer support, warranty, or provide technical assistance for these older Majestic units. We advised the homeowner of all of the above issues and advised her that demolition of the chimney chase, pipe, firebox, and smoke chamber would be necessary to access the interior pipe and that doing so would destroy the parts, and that since the fireplace was long past its expected lifetime it would be best to replace both fireplaces and install new wood or gas fireplace unit or not to use them at all due to FIRE RISK. The technician who inspected this system is a Missouri State Certified Fire Investigator, CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, NFI Certified Gas Specialist, and Licensed Mechanical Contractor with 30 years experience in the chimney industry. Our records show that we made two visits to the property, did a Level I inspection and provided a written report at a cost of $139, therefore, we did in fact, do something for the client instead of "nothing." Just because a homeowner wants something doesn't mean that we can do it, especially if it is not legal to do so. If we had installed screen we would have assumed liability for continued use of an unsafe system.

The technician showed up early and began inspecting the chimney. He seemed to be very knowledgable about chimneys and repairs. At the end, he verbally reported to me, the Seller, and the realtor that some repairs were necessary. However, it was not reported, at that time, that there was any compelling reason to replace the liner. The technician did note missing mortar between the flue tile joints. He explained a Hearthmaster's procedure to repair these joints in place without replacing the liner. "It was much less expensive". Everyone left this inspection confident that the chimney did not need a liner replacement, but only some mortar repairs to make it usable again. I was provided a receipt by the technician which indicated these repairs, but the boxes for cracked liner or chimney fire were NOT checked. Nor did the receipt indicate a liner replacement was needed for any other reason. In a fast-paced transaction, I signed the realtor's acceptance form because I was confident that Hearthmasters would be able to make the repairs without a liner replacement. Several days later, I got an email from the Owner of Hearthmasters indicating that the liner replacement was necessary. This report discussed "possible" liner cracks, offset flue liner tiles, improper liner support, and a possible chimney fire. None of this was indicated in the technican's receipt. Hearthmasters estimated the repairs at $7600!! I think the entire chimney could be replaced for less money. I contacted Marge (the Owner) to discuss the discrepancies in the reports. Marge told me that the technician is not qualified to make assessments of the chimney or recommendations on repairs. Yet, Hearthmasters standard receipt form, to be completed in the field, provides for an assessment of the chimney by checking boxes and completing a description of work. Marge apologized for the "misunderstanding". I asked for a estimate for mortar work to repair the joints between the tiles using the method described by her technician. This was not submitted with the report. Marge declined saying the liner needed to be replaced. Marge pointed out that the report only noted "possible" cracked tiles and only speculated that there may have been a chimney fire, but this was "moot" because the offset tiles are the driver for liner replacement . Again, the receipt does not state a liner replacement is required for any reason. My conversations with Marge ended when she said "she failed to see the discrepancies". At this point, I don't know the reasons for the discrepancies. Perhaps it was a technician overstepping his boundaries. Or perhaps it was a fear ploy to sell a bunch of expensive chimney repairs to either the Seller or the Buyer. I dont know, but this is not the type of professionalism people seek in real estate transaction inspections.
Description of Work: I hired Padgitt (aka Hearthmasters) for a chimney inspection for a fast-paced real estate transaction. We have 30 days to complete the entire deal. Hearthmasters price was comparable to other chimney inspection services. I called Hearthmasters and they got me in within 2 days with Owner's "right hand man" to do the inspection.

As I explained to the member our technicians get information and photos and bring this information back to me so I can write a report. Our dispatcher also tells people this when they make an appointment. The receipt is not an evaluation report and "Written report to follow" is written on the receipt to clarify this. Our technicians are not allowed to comment on their findings in the field, but if he was pressured to do so, he may have mentioned one type of repair we do when it is appropriate. However, that type of repair is not suitable when there are offset tiles and large gaps between tiles. The client waited three weeks to read the report I sent him, and in the meantime had settled the house deal, which was also prior to reading our estimate for repairs. I am certain that had he read the report and estimate when I sent it he would have been able to negotiate something with the seller regarding the repairs, and his report to Angies list would be much different.

The employees were helpful, prompt, and professional. They did their best to help us with what we needed but in the end the cost was just much too high for our needs. I was able to find the exact same doors (same brand and all) online. I ordered them and installed them with the help of my contractor father. I saved 50% (more than $1000 which is huge for us) and the doors are beautiful and high quality, just like they were said to be. I imagine the price I was quoted is fair considering all the costs of running a business and paying the employees, but we just couldn't afford it. I you can afford the prices, I'm sure Hearthmasters would do good work for you.

The price for these doors is actually less on the website the client found, than what we pay for them, not counting labor costs for installation. Due to this, we have discontinued selling and installing glass doors. We did no work for this client, only an estimate, so I don't understand how they can rate us.

Company was excellent. I would use them again in a minute. Cost was low relative to other bids but the work was excellent. We were gone on vacation during the work and it was overseen by a friend. When we returned the work areas, inside and out, were spotless.
Description of Work: Company cleaned and surveyed 2 fireplaces that we knew needed work and documented results with video, snapshots, & written report. They removed old liners on 2 fireplaces which required accessing the chimney through the exterior masonry. They rebuilt 2 fireboxes, chimney caps, repaired corroded gas supply line to 1 of the fireboxes, installed chimney liners and caps, repaired masonry and painted exterior brick, and installed a gas log set.

Very professional and friendly from bid to final sweep!
Description of Work: Our 80 year old building was in dire need of repair and upgrade on three fireplaces. Hearthmasters did an exellent job in assessing the unique requirements for each and laying out options that were affordable. They were very punctual, professional and cleaned up during and after the job! We had one chimney re-lined, one flue re-lined with gas logs inserted, gas line run to two fireplaces, and a beautiful black enamel insert with gas logs inserted into the third fireplace. They were extremely safety conscious, which we appreciated as the building is an event center. We would highly recommend this company and will use them again!

I had a blockage in the chimney flue for my furnace. As a consequence, I could not use the furnace. This is actually the 3rd company I called from Angie's List. I called on Monday and they scheduled an appointment between 8:00 and 8:30 Tues. Buddy was here as scheduled. He was friendly and personable. He got right to work. He didn't dawdle and he appeared to know what he was doing. When he was finished he showed me pictures of everything he had done and explained what he had done. He explained to me that long-term we needed some more work but that it was not emergent. It was a very pleasant experience when I had been dreading the possiblity of a hard sell of a very expensive repair. The office will email me the estimate for further repairs and I expect to use them for 'stage two'.
Description of Work: Buddy came right at the appointment time. He was courteous and personable and got right to work. He inspected my chimney, did a temporary repair to some leaks around the flashing. He determined the chimney only had some rubble, mortar at the bottom of the chimney. He cleared that blockage, replaced the duct from the furnace to the chimney. He even lit my furnace to be sure everything worked as expected. He had pictures of everything that he did. He assured me that we were not in any dire danger of chimney collapse or failure. He did recommend a chimney liner and cap and replacing the incorrectly installed flashing around the chimney. No hard sell just recommendation.

Quick response to inquiry. Gene made a thorough inspection. A point that he made during the inspection was that, if the work was done well, the repairs would not be visible. The work was done by a 2-man crew and, frankly, the chimney didn't look very good. I asked Gene to inspect the job. Without any prompting or complaints from me, he admitted that the work needed to be done over. He came out himself to do it, and now the chimney looks great. He even stopped halfway through the job and asked me to be sure I thought it was looking OK. I really appreciated the fact that it was so important to him for the work to look good. The B rating reflects the fact that the job had to be redone and not the quality of the final product.
