We so glad that my husband called Hearthmasters a second time. We had an excellent experience. The technician was on time and very professional. He cleaned and inspected the chimney and provided us the answers we needed on the insert, gas vs. wood, and glass doors that we needed. Most important he confirmed we do not need a new insert (he could have easily told us we did - we wouldn't have known otherwise). Thank you Hearthmasters! You have our business going forward! Well worth the second try!

In the process of researching what I needed to do, I learned that the chimney fire was covered by my insurance, minus my deductible. That was tremendous news. So, I moved forward with Hearthmasters. Unfortunately, the insurance company hemmed and hawed at the cost. Thankfully Marge at Hearthmasters worked with them to justify the cost. and after several months, the insurance company signed off on it and issued payment so I could get the work done. In mid-October, the crew set up scaffolding to do the job. The job involved cutting out lots of layers of bricks from an exterior wall. In all, three separate holes needed to be made. I was naturally very concerned about how the bricks were going to look when they were relaid and whether the new mortar would match the color of the existing mortar on my 108 year old home. The job also involved rebuilding the smoke chamber and diverting the smoke up a flue that ran parallel to the existing damaged flue. They removed the clay pot from the crown and did lots of mortar work on the chimney, including tuck-pointing and water sealing. They also did a lot of work on two other chimneys on the roof that had tuck-pointing issues as well. They had to remove a section of the firebrick in the fireplace and cut out the damper. They then rebuilt it and installed a replacement top-sealing damper. They installed a roughly 30 foot long titanium/stainless steel chimney liner and insulated it. I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of stuff that they did but to cut to the chase, they did a great job. I appreciated the professionalism of Marge as she helped me navigate the insurance claim. I appreciate the knowledge and creativity of Gene who figured out a way to do the job better yet simpler, with the net effect of saving me thousands of dollars. The person responsible for cutting out the bricks, rebuilding the smoke chamber, relaying the bricks, matching mortar, etc. was Tony. I especially appreciate the care and pride he took in his work. He was the lead person I interacted with most. throughout the job (that lasted about ten days). I can't say enough about what a good job he did and his desire to do an excellent job. His co-worker and helper, Ron, also worked very hard and was very nice. Both men were very pleasant to deal with. There were a couple of other workers and I'm sorry I didn't catch their names, but in short, the whole crew was great. Hearthmasters should take pride in the knowledge that they've hired great workers. So, all in all, I'm happy and would recommend Hearthmasters. I'd be happy to personally show you the work they've done if you're considered a big chimney job on an old house.
Description of Work: One of the reasons we bought our house was for its wonderful wood-burning fireplace. During winters we use it virtually every night. Unfortunately, a couple years ago we had a chimney fire. It scared the heck out of me. The chimney flue sounded like a jet engine and thankfully it burned itself out in the chimney without burning the house down around it. We had the chimney inspected and were told to not use it under any circumstances. This was an extremely sad day for me. My regular chimney sweep suggested I call Hearthmasters because he thought they'd be the only ones able to fix the chimney and enable it to burn wood again. I had Hearthmasters come out and look over the situation. They went on the roof and put a camera up the chimney to see what the situation was. The pictures showed an extremely creosoted flue throughout and cracked tiles. They told me what needed to be done. As I expected, it was going to be a big job. They submitted to me a proposal for getting the work done.

I called to have my chimney swept in October of 2014. They came out and ran a camera up the chimney and found cracks in the tiles. It was about $100. They then condemned the chimney and we could not use it. At the end of January after dealing with estimates and insurance company (that's a whole different review) we scheduled the work for the end of February. They came out when they said they would. They called ahead to let me know they were on their way. They called if they were running late on another job. They did the work efficiently. The mess was minimal. They had tarps down to not mark up my floors. It was completed in the week they said it would be done. Very very pleased. Will use them for my annual sweeping too. The initial $100 went toward the major construction work too. I wasn't out the additional money.

Gene (the actual company owner) put our issues to rest. His inspection and recommendations were professional, based on years of experience, and impartial, based on a deep sense to do what is safe and sensible. He asked many relevent questions to assertain a plan that would work for us personally. Because of the design of the house, the location of the fireplace, and the design of the fireplace(zero-clearance) we will not be using it at all. He did offer possibilities to correct things but admitted that it would be costly. Considering that we are unsure if we will remain here as we age, it is not worth the invertment for us.

The customer asked us for a bid to repair her chimney. We inspected the exterior and found that the chimney is in poor condition and needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Patching spalling bricks is a temporary fix and is not permanent so we do not patch bricks. The interior is still water-logged. All of the bricks have water penetration. Any professional mason would not patch a chimney with a large quantity of spalling bricks.

It went really well. The gentleman that came out did a very nice job. The only thing I was not happy with was that they it took three weeks from the initial time to do the final repair. I don’t know if it was their fault or they could not get the part. The gentleman that came out was very knowledgeable and very nice and efficient.

The inspection was thorough, the technician explained what he was seeing to me, and he left a summary of his findings. Unfortunately due to some personal or family issues, we had to wait almost a month for the official report. The report was very thorough and no doubt accurate, however, the bid to correct the deficiencies was over $7,000. Needless to say, we decided against doing the work. I am sure the work they listed was needed, but we have many renovations in progress, and this work is not in the budget!

The rep who inspected said that I could probably go another winter with existing panels, but they would definitely need to be replaced by next season. These panels being a $600 repair, I just didn't have the money this year, but I did want to replace the grate and chain screen, being much less expensive repair. I called a month later to schedule the order of screen and grate, and never heard another thing until right before Xmas, I received an email, saying that they could not order the parts unless the whole job was done, which was going to be over a $1000 repair. I called after Xmas, and was told the owners after reviewing my service had decided that my fireplace to be unsafe and needed at the very least the replacement refractory panels. I have using my fireplace for 2 months and I hear this just now? I am disappointed and furious with this company, that they would let me go on this long using an unsafe fireplace without informing me. I will be going with another company for this. They have lost me as a customer.
Description of Work: They inspected flue and fireplace and made some recommendations that I had already suspected such as cracks in refractory panels, log grate replacement, and chain screen replacement.

I am sorry that the customer did not like the fact that his panels should be replaced before using the fireplace again. He was informed the condition of the panels was a possible hazard at the time of service, and again when the work was requested to be scheduled. We can't do only part of a job that is mainly cosmetic, and leave out something that is a potential hazard due to the liability. If there was a lack of communication I apologize. The time frame of the service was during our very busy season when we have hundreds of customers to take care of and it sometimes takes a while to get reports out.

Two man crew arrived on time on the work day and did the work on the estimate. They put tarps down to protect the flooring surface. They completed the work by midafternoon. They did the outside work on the chimney cap in the morning and brought the necessary scaffolding, etc. In the afternoon, they parged a few areas in the firebox where the mortar had degraded.
Description of Work: Provider did some repairs in our brick chimney after thoroughly cleaning. They provided an itemized bill. They arrived on time on the scheduled work day. They finished in a timely manner, and when all was finished, they were slightly UNDER their estimate.

Very professional and helpful. He first laid out protection around work area and was very careful to prevent any dirt, soot or debris from escaping the work area. He disassembled the fireplace completely and cleaned each piece and repainted those parts that showed wear. He reassembled the components and even caulked outside where the original builder forgot. Then end result was I got a brand new fireplace for the price of a service call. All this while explaining every step in the process. Very pleased.

Description of Work: Gene and his team completely rebuilt the firebox and hearth area on my 1920's bungalow using hand cut bricks in order to keep it looking as historical as possible. I was looking to install gas logs in our fireplace (from another supplier) when I was told the gas valve needed to be replaced. The plumber I hired said the brick in the hearth needed to be removed before the valve could be replaced. I should have search Angie's list first to look for fireplace repairs. I found Hearth Masters and sent a message with the details of what I had been told. They responded right away and said they would be out to take a look. Padgitt arrived on time, was very friendly and very knowledgeable. You could tell he had plenty of experience. After trying several keys and other tools to see if he could get the valve to work, he took a closer look at the connections and found that the gas line was iron mixed with copper line. A big no-no for gas Why the plumber missed that is beyond me. It would take a complete re-plumbing of the gas line, going thru drywall and brick to get the fireplace in proper order. This would require hiring another plumber and cost way more than I was willing to invest right now. After discussing the options, Padgitt checked the connection, found the gas was turned off and it was decided to just cut the line where the copper changed back to iron just below view inside the fireplace. I can still burn wood if I like, but with my allergies I think I will just put in some candles and enjoy those flames. Even though I did not get the valve, I know I am safe and that I have someone to call if I ever need fireplace work in the future.

He did a fine job on the fireplace. No complaints there. The difficulty was getting him out to the house. He was booked, so it took awhile for to get an appt. Then he needed to come back to finish the job. I'm not sure why he didn't carry a valve on his truck, but whatever. He had to cancel a couple of times along the way, and when he did arrive, he was about two hours late and I had to cancel a lunch appt. to meet him. He was very pleasant and careful about being clean, and his secretary was very good about keeping me apprised of his cancelations.

I'm sorry but we can't possibly carry every type of part on our trucks and sometimes have to return to the home to complete the work. It was easy to schedule visits for the estimate and eventually to have the work done. The crew was punctual and polite.
