Wow, where to begin. When I spoke with Eric yesterday, he made room in his schedule to come to my house this morning at 7am. He and his son were spot on time, introduced themselves, made friends with our dog, and immediately went to work. Eric had told me the 7am time was important because he had made a commitment to be way out in the county at 9am. It's been a long time since I have dealt with two such knowledgeable service professionals. The two of them diagnosed, within ten minutes, the problem at hand (which was not the flue, incidentally, it was clear; the problem was much more complicated), explained everything clearly without talking down to me, and then proceeded to fix the part of the problem that was not the furnace for me. This involved John jumping in his truck, racing to the hardware store and back to re-vent my hot water heater, disconnect it from a faulty venting system with the furnace, using the proper size venting pieces. The two of them were an honest father-and-son team (they could have charged me to clean the flue and I wouldn't have known it did not need cleaning), efficient (they came at 7am, diagnosed and fixed the problem with recommendations for our next steps, and were on their way to their 9am commitment on time--that included a run to the hardware store a few miles away), and clean (not one spot of dirt left on the floor--probably cleaner than when they came!). Also, this father and son team treated each other with the utmost respect, each listening to the other carefully, diagnosing and planning next steps together rather than quibbling with each other, It was refreshing to see two generations working together with respect and consideration for each other. What else could I have asked for? Well, actually I guess I wish they were furnace installers and could solve the rest of my problems...I'd recommend them to anyone!
Description of Work: I called Ashes Away to come look at the flue re: hot water heater and furnace. I had been told it was blocked and needed cleaning.

When I called Ashes Away, I immediately got Eric - the owner. He was very courteous and polite and quickly arranged a time the next morning to come look at my eroded chimney crown and provide an estimate for repair/replacement. Less than 3 hours later, however, I received a return call from Eric informing me that he was "declining the opportunity". No further details or explanations were given.
Description of Work: Called provider to get an estimate for chimney crown repair. No estimate was given.

We called Ashes to Ashes and Josh immediately came out. He diagnosed the problem correctly on the phone and was amazing to work with. He finished the job the next day. We asked him how much it would cost to make our fire place functional again and the price he quoted was less than half of another company we had asked. Can't say enough good things about working with him. Fabulous experience.

I was very pleased with the work that he did. He was very through to show the damage and deterioration that was on the crown and the flashing before performing any of the work. He even let me climb up on the roof of my two story house with him to see the damage first hand. Eric did a thorough job and was quick to get the work done. He made sure that any mess that he made was cleaned and cleared up before he left. There were no surprise costs once the work was done and the work that was done was great.
Description of Work: After calling multiple companies about my flashing around one of my chimneys leaking, Ashes Away was the only company that was not only able to make a quick visit to do the repair, but was also one of the better priced companies. After having the flashing work repaired, he also pointed out that the crown around both of my chimneys was in bad shape along with the liner for my appliance chimney (hot water heater and furnace).

This is an amazing team consisting of a father and a son. They are very professional, knowledgeable, punctual and have superb customer service skills. We were very fortunate to find them and would highly recommend them for any of your Chimney cleaning and repair needs. They will exceed your expectations. I originally contacted them via Angie's List and made a typo in a phone number. When they could not reach us, they stopped by our house and asked if we were still interested in the service. I was amazed! Usually when we try to contact businesses requesting a quote, about 50% of them never call us back., and it is not because I provide inaccurate phone numbers :). This was a one time accident. So it was very refreshing to see them stop by when they were in the neighborhood just to check on our needs and interest. After we described the problems with our chimney, Josh was able to provide us several options and pricing right away. He was able to explain in common terms pros and cons of the proposed solutions, and answered all our questions. He was also able to schedule the repair right away. We had our chimney cleaned and fixed within a week, were provided exceptional customer service and had a pleasure to meet the best chimney professionals in town. Again, do not look for anybody else, this is the team to hire for your chimney service, they will take an excellent care of you and your chimney and will charge you a fair price!

Very please with this company. They double checked to make sure everything was to our satisfaction before they left. I would recommend this company. I thought I did a review immediately after they left as we were so pleased, but for some reason it did not appear.
Description of Work: Replaced damper with a new more efficient one. Cleaned and inspected chimney and firebox.
They were excellent. The work was done in less time than originally estimated and all work was performed in a professional manor. There was excellent preparation and clean up. They respected my home and were careful to not damage or soil anything during the work process. They were punctual and very nice. Their price was approximately 15% less than a competitor's estimate. Lien waiver and warranty were presented on completion of work. They explained the work that was performed. I would definitely use them again and refer them to others without hesitation.

Eric the owner is super nice and very knowledgeable. I called other chimney companies and got answering machines, but I got a live person when I called Ashes Away. Eric answered the phone and helped me determined what my problem might be and immediately was able to set a time to come over. Everything went as expected. Eric and Josh were professional, pleasant and honest. They recommended and explained some additional work needed, but were not pushy about it. I will use Ashes Away again.
I discovered the problems with the debris and the damper when I had gas logs installed. I called 7 chimney sweeps from Angie's List. I reached voicemail at five, was scheduled two weeks out for the 6th but Eric answered and said he could squeeze in a visit to give an estimate that day. He was on time, very courteous and informative. He gave me an estimate for everything except the few broken tiles that could not be seen. Eric made an appointment to come back within 5 days to do the work. He was willing to work around my schedule and showed up at 7:30am. His son, who was also very courteous and professional, helped him with the work. They carefully explained the possible consequences of leaving the tiles broken (a carbon monoxide leak into the half of the chimney housing the furnace pipe, and possibly into the house) and did not charge too much extra to repair the tiles. They left the house very neat, after having carefully covered the entire workspace. Later that night I ran into a problem with the pilot light on the gas fireplace. Ashes away had not installed the gas logs, but it was after hours and I had phone numbers for both Eric and his son, so I called both. Eric answered and his son called back within about a minute. Eric walked me through the problem with the pilot light and stayed on the phone until I had it working. I found Ashes Away to be very reasonably priced but I was much more impressed by their knowledge and professionalism. I know the devastation that can be caused by chimney fires and carbon monoxide leaks and would not want to choose a chimney sweep and repair person based on price alone. I would recommend Ashes Away to anyone.
Description of Work: The fireplace had not been used in over 20 years. He cleaned many years worth of debris out of the chimney. Debris was stacked up behind the damper to the point where the damper would not open. He put on a chimney cap, repaired the damper and replaced broken fire tiles inside the fireplace.

Everything went as expected. Eric arrived early, which was great with me. He did not make a mess, and cleaned up after himself. He's a very polite and curious person. There were no hidden charges, and he didn't try to sell me anything extra. I have used him in the past, and will do so again.

I just bought a house that needed chimney repairs. My agent got Eric to bid the project while we were in the inspection phase of buying the home. He asked for $20 for gas money to come out and do the bid. Once I bought the house I had another company bid the project and they bid $500 more, told me they would have to bust a hole in the wall above my mantel and I'd have to hire someone else to patch the drywall, couldn't convert the fireplace to wood burning, and didn't list some of the things I wanted done on the bid. So I called Eric and after spending about 10 minutes on the phone asking questions and having him reassure me he wouldn't bust a hole in my wall, I decided to hire him. He bid $3200, which was very close to the $3000 the inspector guessed it might cost to have the repairs done, so I felt like I was getting a good price. There were no unforeseen costs so the bid was the total amount I paid. He asked for $600 up front and I paid the balance once the job was done. He allotted two days for repairs but on the first day it was pouring down rain so he couldn't do any work. His son and another guy help him the second day so they could get everything done in one day (8am-5pm). I'm no expert on chimneys but all the issues I could see before he came seem to be fixed. I had a fire the next evening and everything worked the way it was supposed to. Eric made it easy to get ahold of him. If he didn't answer when I called, he always called me back the same day. He was also on time both days and took less time to finish the job in the second day than he initially anticipated. He took plenty of time to explain everything in detail to me so that I felt comfortable with the repairs and knew what was going on. The crew accidentally ripped a screen on my front door but they replaced it at no cost to me and I couldn't even tell that anything had happened to it. My sister was home while they were doing work but I would have felt comfortable leaving them in the house alone. Eric is a very nice guy and seems very honest. He called me about 10 minutes after he left my house to say that he accidentally left a box of garbage in my driveway and was terribly sorry and forgot to give me some papers that he would drop in the mail as soon as he got back to his office. Overall I was very happy with Ashes Away and would use them again.

The owner was responsive to my calls and punctual on the first 'assessment visit'. Due to 'big deal' sales, he ended up not doing the work himself - his son (?) did the tuckpointing & installed new chimney cap. Work was completed on time and they cleaned up afterwords. Easy to recommend this company for others looking for minor chimney repairs.

We just had an issue with water coming down our chimney and I realized that things were loose there. This deal popped up at the perfect moment to have this checked out. I had actually gotten on the roof myself to do some patchwork, but I wanted a professional to come out and see if there any more work to be done. Ashes Away came out within a few days from my purchase. They ended up not having to do anything as the patchwork I had done took care of the problem and he would be just redoing that job. He said that I could get a refund for my Big Deal from Angie's List and didn't charge for coming out. I appreciate their integrity with the situation. I would be happy to work with them in the future in regards to other chimney and gutter work.

We were very happy with this company. They were prompt, professional and knowledgeable. We will definitely use them in the future!
Description of Work: We purchased our house earlier this year, during our home inspection the inspector was unable to examine the chimney because of a faulty flu. Ashes Away was recommended to us so we called to have our chimney swept and evaluated. They were able to come within one week. They were very prompt and did an excellent job. The man who came out said that our damper had a small crack in it and would need to be replaced but he would have to come back at another time to replace it because he did not have the correct one in his truck. We have not scheduled them to come out to repair this but plan to very soon.

Overall it went well. There were a number of small issues, nothing related to the quality of the job at all. We are very happy with the result and would recommend Ashes Away to anyone who needs chimney repair. The small issues we had I believe were related to our calling during their busiest season. The owner originally called me back to tell me that the job couldn't be done based on an initial review of the job made by his helper. When he talked about the issues involved in breaking out liners in a 2 and a half story interior chimney I realized he didn't know who he was talking to. We have a single story bungalow with an exterior chimney. Also the contract had the start time on it (11:30 am) so I wasn't here when they arrived to do the work & the owner appeared irritated with me even though he was more than two hours early. I was back by 9:15 from walking my dog. If he'd phoned ahead I could have been here. Breaking out a liner is a messy and loud process. I wish I'd known how disruptive this would be so I could have made arrangements to leave the house. Also the crew used our bathroom and in doing so they tracked debris through the house. It wasn't horrible but if I were recommending to a friend I'd want them to know this. Most importantly, the job they did was great. We now have a smoke-free fireplace and a nice cap to keep the squirrels out. They ran into a lot of unanticipated trouble breaking out the old chimney tile and they worked until late into the night to get the job done as promised. Despite the unanticipated problems they kept to the contracted price. Because they finished so late they missed some debris in the yard. The owner called to check on our satisfaction later in the week and when I mentioned the debris he apologized then stopped by and cleaned it up. We are extremely happy with the job. We have no idea how the price compares because this was the only quote we got. We know how hard they worked and we feel the price was fair.
Description of Work: Had a chimney in need of tuck-pointing and we came to find out we had an old deteriorating ceramic liner as well as a family of squirrels living in the chimney. We expected as much. Also the fireplace often billowed smoke into the room. The owner knew his trade and told us exactly what we needed to do to have a functional fireplace. He was able to do the work promptly and we are extremely happy with the end result. They broke out the old ceramic liner (single-story home), replaced with stainless steel liner. Added a chimney cap and a smoke guard which looks great and works great. Tuck pointing looks great also. They also did a good job of keeping the filth out of our living room during the demolition.

Mr. Fenner was prompt in setting up the appointment, arrived on time, inspected the chimney and basement area, and was extremely thorough in describing the problem (concurring with the heating company). He seemed completely knowledgeable and capable, and has stellar reports on Angie's List. He had a bid ready within about 15 minutes. His bid for the job was $1960, and he would not be able to get to the job for 4-5 days. This was a concern for us because the heat was cutting off at 64 degrees due to this problem (not to mention the risk of carbon monoxide build-up.) So, we decided to get another bid from another company that is also highly rated by Angie's List members. The other company bid $700 and had the work completed the next day. They also replaced some pipes coming from the furnace (not in Mr. Fenner's bid), but they did not clean the chimne (which was included in Ashes Away's bid.) I would probably use Mr. Fenner for chimney sweeping, but his bid for repair work was more than $1000 higher than the company we ultimately hired.
Description of Work: We had Mr. Fenner bid on the following job. We learned from our furnace company that our chimney liner probably did not extend fully through the chimney, did not have a legally required mortar collar, and did not have a chimney cap on the roof. We also needed the chimney to be swept, and had a squirrels nest in the chimney that needed to be removed.
