Made an appointment for a roof inspection and they didn't show or call to reschedule. I had to take the afternoon off to meet them so it cost me my vacation time. They still have never called back.

On one hand, Artown was very good about securing a payment from the insurance company--the insurance company denied our hail damage claim initially, but Artown went to bat for us (we clearly had hail damage) and got us a new roof. They did a good job communicating with the insurance company for us. For that, I am grateful. From there, things went more sour. The installation of the roof went OK. We have an old house with some tight corners near dormers, and they didn't really catch the seams flush so there is a bit of warping on the shingles (minor issue). The work crew only had one person that spoke (choppy) English, which made communication difficult when a small issue arose during roofing, but everyone was professional and worked hard. When I contacted Artown about a few small gaps in the roof near tight spots, it took forever to get someone out to check it, and when he came, I was not impressed with his professionalism (though he was very friendly). He said the issues were due to construction of our old house, which is possible, but I was not totally sure it was true. Our home inspection from the previous year mentioned no such thing. I got the sense there were issues of communication in the company, which were strengthened by the questionable way the needed repairs were discussed. After promising to come by early the next day and do the repairs for cash (off the company books?), he never showed. I'm going to call the company today and report the strange behavior of the warranty/inspection person. Overall though, I feel I've had enough experience with Artown to recommend you go with someone else.

Description of Work: AVOID at all costs. Requested bids from this company. Response was adequate, roughly a week to respond, week and a half to two weeks to provide a bid. I advised in original conversation that we had several projects we were working to complete, but were in middle of arranging the financing and that we would be a month or so out before making decision and arranging repairs. Bids received from 3 contractors for the roofs on two different houses, Artown was by far the highest bid received, nearly double the amount of the lowest bid on one and 3000.00 higher than the average of the two others on the other home. Then on the 9th, only a week and a half after to two weeks after receiving the bids, I get a TEXT, yes not a call, a TEXT from the estimator saying how he spent over 50.00 in fuel and time going out to measure and inspect to provide the bids, and how he was assuming that he did not get the work? Very unprofessional, Price extremely high, not even in average ranges. Pushy, Needless to say, I will not even be considering this company for repairs working on. Suggest you not even waste your time, Unless you like being pressured and then have a guilt trip thrown at you for not selecting them! My suggestion is AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Save yourself the headache.

I chose the company based on a referral from a friend who was having their roof replaced at the same time. The work performed was good. The communications during the process was very good at first, then half way through the job my contact was let go and it took me weeks to get someone from the company to return my calls. I went from hearing from the company weekly to no contact for several weeks. I found the handling of the situation to be poor. The only way I knew what had happened was the man who was let go told me and gave me who the contact would be. Could never get the contact at the company to return my calls. I finally did reach the manager who was rather abrupt, but they finally finished the job. While the work was good, the customer service was less than desirable. The excuse I got was that they were swamped with storm business; that is no excuse for poor communication. If you can't keep up with the volume, you should only solicit what you can handle.

The experience was all right. It was the insurance company that we were not happy with. It was okay but it wasn't excellent. They changed crews and they put gutter caps on the wrong house. They put them on the neighbor's house and put their gutters caps on our house. The insurance paid for the job. They got the job done so we would probably use them again.

They also do business as Artown Roofing. They have complaints registered with the BBB. When I put my complaint with BBB, I immediately got threatened by their lawyer that I was going to get sued for slander. Apex Roofing is owned by Cheryl D Curtis. Her son's name is Dustin P Curtis who is a convicted felon. He has 10 or 15 felony arrests and those are the current ones. The latest one is property damage set for hearing on March 20th. He is into everything from drunken driving, felony of autos and properties and so on. This kid is the biggest con artist. He came to my house. In Chesterfield Wildwood, where I live, door-to-door felicitation is illegal, but I didn't know it then. He kept coming to my door leaving fliers and telling me that I have a bad roof and so on. I listened to all of that because I didn't know anything. I am single and live by myself. He told me all I had to pay was my deductible and whatever else the insurance paid, they would get. He filled the contract out there where it said that they would do the work for the insurance proceeds and I was responsible for the deductible. It looked alright to me, but I asked him how they knew what the insurance was going to pay. I had never seen a contract without any numbers. He told me that it was okay and he was a professional and he would meet the insurance person in my area and he was sure it was going to be fine. They did the work and at first I thought they did a good job. They even left the trash out. He then asked me for $1000.00 and told me that it was my insurance deductible. The insurance company deducted the 1000 from what they owed me. I was ready to give him a check for the remainder. They actually wanted the $1000 as well. Then his mother called up and started yelling at me trying to extort the 1000 out of me. I then found out what they put on my house was not what was in the contract. The home improvement company came out with the information that they were doing 3 re-roofs for the roofing company. They were trying to claim, but could not explain the money and they wouldn't give me individual lien waivers from all the people who worked on my roof as they were all illegals from Mexico. I couldn't even talk to them because it was all Spanish. They wanted the money and I told them that I wouldn't give the money unless they gave me the lien waivers, which they refused. That was not what the contract said. They slithered around after the insurance paid them. Then they told me that I was responsible for them, but I told them my responsibility lied with the insurance carrier. Insurance proceeds are paid out after the deductible is taken out. They wanted the whole full estimate and they just twisted it all out and that was a con. The whole insurance estimate was 8600, but the check was 7650 plus tax. They ripped off the existing roof. They didn't do any sub-roofing, but they put down 15 pounds roof paper that was supposed to be for regular prepared shingle. They then sold me the upgraded shingle and the kid told me that if I upgraded the shingle I could take that off my taxes with an energy credit. I then found out that not only was it not technically an upgrade shingle but the roof paper that they used would not support the upgraded shingle. The home improvement company told me that it would only last 10 years. All along I offered to pay them for the upgrade as I had agreed to and I even picked out the shingle. It looked like some of the upgraded shingles were on it, but they mixed in the prepared shingles and overlapped them to make it look architectural. They are con artistes. They are not licensed outside of Lake St. Louis. Cheryl Curtis, the owner, called me around Christmas wanting to settle this matter and she offered me $540.00 which was half of the cost of the shingle upgrade. I refused the offer. Dustin, the son, had done a roof repair which he assured me was covered under my insurance. It wasn't covered, so they were willing to deduct the repair charges of $150.00 from the total amount.
Description of Work: Apex Roofing & Contracting came out last August and did the roofing work for me.

I have one billing complaint with the BBB, which is the same person who wrote this review. And when she first made her complaint, she actually said that my company "did a good job" and her only concern was that she did not understand that she physically had to write us a check for her policy amount of her deductible, which is stated in our contract. It's been almost 2 years since we put on her roof, and she has not paid us a single dime. She has not paid us her deductible nor has she paid us any of the money she had received from her insurance company. We applied the materials that she had picked out and signed off on. This case is set to go to court in June of 2011. I made several attempts to try to come to some kind of agreement with [this member], but she refused and told me that we were not going to "profit off of her". Well when this is your livelihood, that's what you except at the end of the job, to get paid. She indeed had a roofing consultant come out to inspect her roof, and he could only find about $300.00 worth of items that he suggested that needed to be address. We offer a 10 year labor warranty which goes into effect as soon as we are paid in full, so if she would have paid us, then we would have gladly taken care of any labor issues. As far as legal issues that Dustin has incurred, that is personal and I will not address those. But he has indeed paid his debt to society and now is entitled just like everyone else to be able to live and work a normal life.

Dustin inspected my roof and his response was that I definitely had roof damage and should get a new roof. I had others inspect the roof and they all (4 companies) said that it was very iffy that I had hail damage. My insurance adjuster said the same thing, but the I think the following factors caused him to go ahead and total out my roof: (i) enough other homes that I could point to w/ damage (insurance companies don't like to be the only ones that haven't replaced a roof in a neighborhood, so pointing out the number replaced or to be replaced is always helpful) (ii) I had a roofer meet the adjuster at my house to show him what he found (not Apex) and (iii) the insurance company COULD point to a hail storm that had occured in the general area (they asked me when I thought the hail storm occured and I got lucky and said the right timeframe). Besides, I just think I got lucky - the adjuster liked me enough and the roofer enough to go ahead and total it out. I wanted to consider Apex, but when I find myself in a conversational shell game, then I remove myself from it. It dawned on me during our conversation that Apex is what they call a 'storm chaser' in the roofing business. A storm chaser is a company that comes into town when a storm occurs, sets up a small office (where reasonable to expect no one would visit), and then leaves when the work dries up. They are very adept at dealing with the insurance companies, know how much they will pay and for what, and they normally want to get in between the customer and the insurance company for payment. My concern about doing business with this type of company is that they won't be in town if/when something goes wrong with your roof - you will literally not have anyone to call. Likewise, I have to imagine that they really aren't incented to do a quality job on your roof - they already know they will not be there.
Description of Work: We had a hail storm in our area and several neighbors' roofs were replaced. My immediate neighbor used Apex and I was happy to have a good referral. My conversation with Apex was not good at all; I thought Dustin was very unprofessional. I explained that I replaced the roof on my first house (working with the contractor) and that the roof on my second was replaced due to hail, but I realized that I was not an expert. I tried to have a conversation with Dustin about what I'd experienced before and asked several questions and was never satisfied with the answers. The experience felt like I was dealing with a con man. He had the sayings memorized and he was going to intersperse them when he thought it made sense. Having dealt with roofers before, I knew that I didn't want to sign a contract that allowed them to deal directly with my insurance company. Never a good idea, as you are just out of the loop and they can overpay themselves this way. In the end, he offered me what I thought was a terrible deal and I politely declined. Wildwood forbids door-to-door solicitation, but it hasn't stopped Apex.

First of all, my company is not considered 'STORM CHASERS", we are a local company and have an A+ Rating with the BBB. We have been in business in Lake St Louis, since 2004. We are fully licensed and insured. We work with all insurance companies and we take our work and our reputation very seriously. We offer a 10 year labor warranty and all of our sales rep are very well trained and are trained to do a complete inspection and to also educate the homeowner as to what is going on with their home. Our objective is always to provide the best customer care possible with interigity and honesty. We have lots of repeat customers, so our objective is to always to the best possible care of our customers and to never "screw the customer". If that were the case I would still not be in business, nor would I have an A+ rating with the BBB.
