We pulled up old carpet in our house to reveal hardwood floors underneath. However, a lot of the floors were in poor condition. There were places with water damage, stains, chips missing from some of the boards, one place where someone had drilled a 1/2 inch hole through the floor, plus all the glue left over from the carpet. Prior to them starting work they had me remove all the staples and nails from the floor and the shoe moulding from the walls. Over a period of 4 days the crew we hired sanded down the floors, filled in the chips, replaced the board with the hole, then stained the floor, and finished up with 2 coats of polyurethane sealant. The floors look like new and we're very happy with the results.

refinished hardwood floors in 3 bedrooms.
Description of Work: Armstrong did an amazing job refinishing 3 bedrooms in our 95 year old home. They refinished with a darker stain and matched to the main living areas that had been done 5 years prior perfectly. They explained everything very well including care. They worked very hard to disrupt our lives as little as possible and cleaned up after themselves.

We removed everything on the walls and floors preparing for the big day. The first day they prepared the room by haning plastic so the sanding residue would stay in the work area. They sanded the floors to a beautiful, smooth raw wood. Having the yellow varnish gone was a big improvement itself! They gave us a selection of stain colors and we choose a Provencial brown. After sanding was complete, they buffed / swept the floors. They then applied the stain and the room was transformed. The next day, they buffed the floors again and applied 2 coats of water based urethane. The final day, another coat of water based urethane. The next day was a curing day. We could was in stocking feet but nothing more. The fifth day, we The floors have been remarkably renewd from their yellowed varnished color to a lovely finish that we absolutely love. We would highly recommend them to anyone needing their floors redone.
Description of Work: When we removed the carpeting from the first floor of our 1964-built home, we discoverd wonderful red oak floors, original to the house. The fact that the original homeowners choose to carpet over the wood floors, saved for us the option to refinish the wood or replace the old / dirty carpet. We decided to talk to every one we knew about refinishing as we have never had wood floors before. We talked to friends and family, and to refinishers. After we decided to refinish the 49-year old floors, we received 3 separate bids. Almost a year later, we chose Armstrong-Citywide because they stuck with us for the year while we asked question after question. They were the most reasonable; the most interested; and, we felt, the most honest that we spoke to.

I was amazed at how great the floors looked just after being laid and sanded. We had used them before to refinish our bedroom floors. They did such a beautiful job on those, we decided to use them again on the remaing hard wood floors. They come in and give you the estimate and point any problems they might have, and then schedule your start date at your convenience. In our case, I was having some furniture delivered at the end of the week and they were able to get started and finished in plenty of time. There are crews that handle a specific part of the job. One crew lays the floor, and the next day another crew sands and stains the floor. It took them 4 days because they had to lay new flooring and repair an area, normally if it is just refinishing, like for our bedroom, the square footage that was done took 3 days. I would use them again and know my floors were going to be beautiful when they were done.
Description of Work: We have used this company twice. The estimate they give you is exactly what you pay. If they see there might be a problem, they tell you ahead of time. They are on time and very courteous. They clean up any mess they have made on the job. We had to have a linoleum hallway replaced with real wood flooring, and a problem area replaced. The problem was the existing floors were 50 years old. They laid the new flooring and repaired the damaged flooring beautifully. The new and old flowed seamlessly. The crew they have are all experts and work very efficiently. They stick to the estimate, do what they say they are going to do and do beautiful work, everything I was looking for.

Staff was punctual and neat. Being new to hardwood floor requirements, we did not know to ask all the right questions. This resulted in some initial scheduling mishaps (floor vs tile) but staff coordinated well with the other company; was flexible to meet our overall schedule and everything got done insufficient time to allow move. Staff had the patience to try various combinations of stain to accommodate our requests for color comparison (somewhat tedious and repetitive) and the floors turned out beautifully. One inlaid and 1 side vent did not perfectly fit - but when called, staff came back in timely fashion to make the minor adjustments required, and everything looks great.
Description of Work: We replaced carpets with new hardwood floors in living room, hall way and 2 bedrooms. We also had tile installed in adjacent bathroom (different company).

In general, I was very happy with the finished product. The floor turned out beautiful. I would recommend Armstrong-Citywide. The dust control from the initial sanding was very good, but I ended up with fine dust everywhere from buffing out the finish before application of the final coat. I guess that is something you have to deal with when doing construction. They finished a day earlier than originally planed. I was happy about that, but they did not tell me, or my wife (who was home at the time), so we kept wondering why they did not show up on the last day, until we called. The floor vent covers they provided were finished very well, and match the floor, but did not fit until I cut the underside down to fit in the vent holes in the floor.

The estimator was on time and did a good job describing what they would do. However, the person responsible for delivering the estimate did not do their job.
Description of Work: I had this company come out for an estimate on refinishing a couple of hardwood floors in addition to installing hardwood flooring in an adjoining room. I was told that I would get their estimate in 4-5 days, however, that time passed without any estimate. I called a week later and was told that they would get me the estimate that day and that did not happen.

The estimate was given verbally the day after it was ran, however it does take 4-5 days in most cases for a written estimate especially if this time frame falls over a weekend. When giving free estimates we can become back logged and regret not responding in a written manner in the time frames that customers expect.

It started out well. The workers were prompt and courteous and the salesman/project manager was courteous and punctual. I bought the more expensive water-based finish to allow faster drying and a more environmentally friendly option, as I was moving into the home a couple of weeks or so after the work was supposed to be done, and having furniture delivered, etc. The home was vacant during the work. Once the work was reportedly done, and I inspected it, I found many areas of dust and grit embedded throughout various and many areas of each room, particularly around the corners. I had hardwood floors in my old home and knew that this was not the case in my prior experience with wood refinishing and new wood finishing. The project manager inspected, and agreed it was not satisfactory and apologized, and advised they would resend and redo. When it was "done" again, I inspected and found some improvement, but still many areas of grit and small debris embedded into the finish. I again called the project manager to inspect, and again he agreed it was not satisfactory and speculated that there was something .wrong with his worker's equipment. They redid it, and again it was better, but at that point the finish in 2 of the rooms was dulled due to their efforts to remove the problem areas, and there were still problem areas of grit.. At this point, both of us were frustrated and the relationship deteriorated. I did not expect perfection but at the price i was paying I did expect a decent and smooth finish and based on my past experience with wood floors, knew that what I had was not up to par. The project manager at one point said he didn't understand why they were having these problems because they had just done a very expensive project in Johnson County KS with a black floor finish and it was perfect "and like glass". My only reply was that I didn't understand it either if that was the case, they were obviously doing something different on my floor. I finally just gave up because it was obvious that the floor was not going to ever be completely right and I settled for just "acceptable." because I had to prepare to move in and have furniture delivered and I couldn't wait for them to do it better. The workers did a good job coming up with a color for the floors, but they at first were not going to replace the quarter round or trim. That had never been explained to me and I was in a time crunch at that point because of the continued efforts to get a smooth finish, so the manager finally agreed to replace it, using the old trim they'd taken up, but they weren't happy about it. The finish in the dining room is duller than the rest of the rooms because it had the most problems in terms of grit, If I had it do do over, I would NOT use this company. I paid a lot of money to hire a company I'd researched and thought would be top notch, but I got a barely-acceptable result

Showed up on time; gave great recommendations, did the work on time and performed well. They cleaned up well inside. The only issues were: (1) put a bunch of trash into bins in a manner that would not be picked up by trash company and (2) didn't put effort quarter rounds to join walls and floor. Overall, these are picky points, but when spending this much, I expect a lot. Still, I would definitely use them again.

We were remodeling the entire downstairs of our average Johnson County home. The project included refinishing hardwood floors in the large eat-in kitchen, entry way, and half bath area. The floors were originally honey oak, and they had not been refurbished in any way for 16 years. They were very aged and yellowed. Many years before I had contacted another company, which seemed totally uninterested in this relatively small job. This previous company also intimidated me with threats of of dangerous chemicals and having to leave our home for days. Armstrong was recommended to me by a person whose family had used them. Armstrong's sales rep (Joe) came out promptly and was extremely thorough in his evaluation of the work to be done and the services that his company would provide. I had had two previous estimates. Although the prices were within the same range, the other sales reps failed to explain the process, to provide options for colors and finishes, and (most importantly) did not note the areas in the floor that needed replacement boards. The Armstrong rep (Joe) made me feel very comfortable and assured that if I had questions or concerns or problems, he and the company would stand behind their work and make sure I was satisfied. In fact, I did call him with questions several times before placing the order. My main concern was dust. In the past, I had heard that the whole house would be inundated with dust, and I was concerned that our newly painted walls and stained cabinets would be ruined. Joe repeatedly assured me that this would not be the case. He was very honest. He explained that there would be dust, but it would be manageable. When the workers came, they were punctual, prepared, and polite. They did an excellent job. They made color recommendations and achieved the stain we wanted on the first pass. We did have to stay off the floors for three consecutive coats, but because we chose the eco-friendly product, there was no problem with odors or dangerous fumes. There was some dust, and we did have to clean up after. It wasn't overwhelming; however, it would have helped if they suggested covering certain items above floor level. Nevertheless, the whole process was relatively painless, mostly because we were well-informed by the sales people and well served by the refinishing people (who took their jobs very seriously). I also appreciated that they mailed me a bill instead of asking for payment on the spot. In the past, I have paid for services only to be disappointed later. Armstrong has enough faith in their service and employees to send you a bill later and assume you will pay for a job well done, which I was happy to do.

The workers showed up on time, worked quickly and were very polite. They covered doorways with plastic and were very good about vacuuming up the sawdust from the floors. However, they did not vacuum off trim or walls and we were required to dispose of the bags of sawdust. The man they have doing the wood repair did an excellent job. His work is seamless. The floor color looks great!Unfortunately, we were left with stain smeared on base trim and splattered on the walls and kitchen cabinets; a brown hand print on a white door; stain spilled on a slate floor; and hairs and bubbles in the polyurethane. Dave with Armstrong was super polite, flexible with scheduling and quick to get his workers back out to work on the issues. They did a good job of getting the stain off of the slate floor and most of the cabinets. We still have bubbles and hairs in the poly, the hand print on the door and splatters on the wall. I guess the bottom line is that the floors look a ton better than before.
Description of Work: Armstrong Floor refinished all of the wood floors in our living room, dining room, kitchen, stairs, two hallways, bathroom and three bedrooms. They were able to work around a toilet and a clawfoot bathtub in the bathroom. The work also included repair to buckled and missing boards in several rooms.

I WAS CONTACTED BY THE OWNER ABOUT THE HAND PRINT AND STAIN AT BOTTOM OF THE CABINETS BEFORE JOB WAS COMPLETED. WE REMOVED WITH THINNER THE PROBLEM AREAS TO CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, SO SHE STATED. AS FOR THE TRASH, WE LEFT 2 BAGS OF SAWDUST AT THE END OF THE DRIVEWAY FOR TRASH PICK-UP WHICH IS COMMON PRACTICE FOR HARDWOOD FLOORING CONTRACTORS. AS FOR THE HAIR IN THE FINISH, THE OWNER HAD SEVERAL IN HOUSE PETS THAT SHED AS MOST ANIMALS DO, THEIR WAS A CONSTANT FLOW OF ANIMAL HAIR IN THE AIR DURING OUR SANDING AND FINISHING PROCESS. THE FLOORS WERE NOT ONLY VACUUMED TWICE ON EACH PHASE OF COATING, BUT WERE TACKED CLOTHED AS WELL. WE DID OUR ABSOLUTE BEST TO ELIMINATE THE ANIMAL HAIR BUT COULD NOT PREVENT IT ALL AS IT WAS IN THE DUCT WORK BEING BLOWN OUT. IN RESPONSE TO PAYING TO MUCH FOR YOUR SERVICES, I WOULD ONLY HOPE AS AN ACTING CONTRACTOR/OVER SIGHT PERSON YOU WOULD KNOW THAT YOU PAID ONLY WHOLESALE FOR THE WORK THAT WAS DONE. YOU ALSO HAD AND DID TAKE AN ENTIRE 30 DAYS TO PAY FOR YOUR WORK. IF YOU WERE NOT HAPPY WITH SOMETHING, I BELIEVE THAT A PHONE CALL WOULD HAVE RESOLVED ALMOST ANYTHING AS YOU HAVE STATED THAT MY COMPANY IS ONE THAT "CARES ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS". I WOULD HAVE RATHER TALKED WITH YOU ON THE TELEPHONE OR IN PERSON.
