Bruce and his crew finished over 1000 sqft of basement for my family, including a wet bar, 3/4 bath, game room and family room. I cannot say enough about how great it was to work with them. From the minute Bruce walked in our house to give us an estimate, we knew he would be the one for the job. He had a great personality, understood what we wanted to do and was up front about cost, timing, any limitations, etc-- we could just tell that it would be easy to work with him. Bruce's son, David, did most of the woodwork. He did a fantastic job of duplicating the staircase from our main floor (we happened to also have leftover spindles). He also created a custom built-in bookcase as well as worked with standard cabinetry to make custom-looking bookshelves in our bar. We really trusted that if he said he could do something, he could-- and he did! What we really appreciated was the work ethic-- when they said they were going to be here, they were here. They were always here around 8/8:30 and put in a full day's work, unlike other contractors we've dealt with in the past. The sub contractors that Bruce works with (HVAC, flooring, plumbing, etc) were all punctual and responsible and were also here when they were supposed to be. Because of this, when quoted 3 month from start to finish, they were spot on! They started our basement at the end of April, and were finished mid-July. The project was not without its set-backs or errs, but whenever we brought something to Bruce's attention, it was remedied promptly and without question. All in all, for major construction, this was the most pleasant project we've ever had completed and would recommend Norse in a heartbeat.

[Member Name Removed], I cant say thank you enough for that review. I’ve never been one to ask for a review to be done. I’ve always felt that if our work warranted it, I would get a review. Yours however, blew me away First I am always happy to receive follow up emails from customers saying how much they enjoy the space we did. It gives all the crew a sense of purpose and I have shared both your text last night and the entire review with them all. So it pleases me to no end to know you’re enjoying your space as well! Also, VERY happy to hear the heating worked out. I know that was a big concern of yours and (to be honest) was a bit worried to ask! LOL I will be sharing your kind words with our subs as well as there are equally important to our team. THANK YOU!!! Thanks so very much! Bruce & David!

We attempted to have our unfinished basement finished in 2020. The project started in June of 2020 and was terminated unfinished in January of 2021. Total cost of the partial project was $75,771. Several issues led to the termination of the project. The primary was lack of actual project management and ability to take responsibility for errors by the contractor, which, in addition to being frustrating, contributed to the unnecessarily long project time of 7 months while still not being finished. Examples include: - An I-Beam for a heavy-bag track was to be installed on the ceiling. It was installed in the incorrect location and extremely poorly, to the point where flanges were overlapping. When confronted, the contractor stated that it just "wasn't finished". However, the correction required the complete removal and re-installation. Then the contractor claimed the issue was due to insufficient instruction supplied, even though all required information was in fact supplied. The installation crew was simply not competent and failed to install as instructed. - Wood panels were put on a large portion of the ceiling. Several conversations in writing instructed that there was to be no more work done after the initial paint as we liked the look as is. When painters were on-site for the walls, it was confirmed with them verbally that the ceiling was complete and not to perform work on them. However, they caulked and painted it anyway. When confronted, the contractor stated it was always known that this work was to be done. He also said it was only painted and not caulked, which was clearly not the case. Additionally, when shown texts and emails where we explicitly requested no more work done to the ceiling and that he also stated it was complete, he simply ignored it. - When ordering a vanity, he sent us to a shop to select one. However, when it came time to need the vanity, we found it had never actually been ordered. The contractor blamed us for not ordering it while at the shop, however the person at the shop later confirmed the hold up was the contractor not confirming the order. These are some of the biggest examples, but there were communication issues throughout the project. The termination of the contact didn't go any better than the rest of the project. We were told up front, in writing, that we would be billed for all services each week for the prior week. However, when we were settling up after the contract was terminated, there were many costs he was back charging for, meaning they were not billed during the week of work as the original contract stated. One of the items had no reciept. One of the bigger issues here was the painting. The painting cost was much too high relative to the original bid price based on actual work performed. When asked for an itemized bill for painting, it included painting work that had not been performed. The contractor ultimately removed the item for which he didn't have a receipt and reduced the paint cost by some amount. It was still not correct, but we agreed to pay to end the situation.

I will be the first to admit this project did not go well. To date, this project had the most changes of any project we've ever had in production. It makes scheduling very difficult to complete when the owners themselves do not know what they want. This project was terminated by Norse. After repeated complaints about the ceiling paneling (which was a change order) selected by the homeowner for their ceiling having knot holes and seams, being told the ceiling would be painted and that painting included caulking and then complaining about the seams and knotholes being caulked, we left the job site with an unpaid balance. Repeated changes are what cause the ridiculous delays and forgive me, but I refuse to work for any woman who "swears on the life of her child"

Norse Construction exceeded all my expectations. Each day we knew what work would be done and who was coming. Bruce, the owner, is an excellent communicator and kept us informed daily. Work never stopped -- every day progress was made. The project was completed in a very timely manner and within budget. I've never had this good an experience with a remodel; Norse is excellent and I would rehire them in a heartbeat.

Bruce, Dave et al are amazing. They listened, worked with me and my timeline, and gave us such a wonderful, beautiful product; our master bath, and full basement remodel are gorgeous. Bruce is paid weekly based on the work his team does, itemized statement, full disclosure and no surprises. We are hiring them again to add a deck to our home, and cannot wait for the finished product. /Gail & Brett Gordon and family.

We didn't plan on remodeling our kitchen, but things happen and we had too. We did not have the luxury of planning out ahead of time, this was all on the fly. But we extended our kitchen and it is just stunning. Norse Construction was extremely responsive and were able to find ways to save us money here and there. Over all it was great.

Bruce and his guys did a great job on multiple projects. They repaired the deck and three season porch, replaced damaged wood around the garage, installed siding, and replaced the kitchen counters. His bids are detailed, so there are no surprises, and the work is very reasonably priced. Everyone showed up on time and got the jobs done in a timely manner (based on past experience with other contractors, that is highly unusual!). I needed other work done that Bruce does not do, so he recommended another contractor That contractor also turned out to be excellent!

The owner of Norse came and was pleasant, punctual and professional. I don't think I fully understood the offering for $49--so my expections may have been out of alignment from the actual estimation done. As a general contractor, his focus was on the construction aspects of the job. I was thinking that there would be someone that could speak to the specifics around flooring choices, cabinet alternatives, etc. The estimation was detailed, but was missing a couple of the items I had gotten excited about. But I felt that the owner was fair and trustworthy. If I decide to move ahead with the large renovation he quoted me, I'd definitely feel comfortable using him as my general contractor.

Sadly, the ball was dropped on Angie's List end as i never received notification of Mr. Browns purchase. And please, by all means, on all of these deals there is a "fine print" section. I urge homeowners to read that. In there you will see on this deal that the appointments are to be scheduled during business hours. Please bear in mind that my "non-business" hours are what EVERYBODY wants as far as their estimate or consultation is concerned. As a result, this restriction is placed specifically so this does not dramatically interfere with normal business. In Mr. Browns case, the only non-business hours i had available is rather far into the future and he simply didn;t wish to wait that long.

AWESOME. Bruce was a joy to work with, as were all of his "crews." Everything was done on the schedule that he had given me (actually finished a week early), within the price he had quoted. He responded within an hour to every email/call, and even accommodated my changes as we went along :) I have 3 more re-models/re-dos to my house over the next year, and there is no doubt in mind that I will be using Bruce for every one of them. Tusen Takk!!

TERRIBLE HOMEOWNER EXPERIENCE 1) Concrete cutting was done terribly and ended up causing home to be completely coated with thick and sickening layers of concrete dust. Norse construction did provide HEPA filtered vacum cleaning and air cleaning machines to deal with immediate mess that they caused, but not clear what the long term implications are for family health. I also need to hire a company to inspect and clean out all the duct work and filters which will be additional cost. 2) Second egress window was a mess and resulted in multiple (close to 10 separate incidents) sequential floodings of basement causing additional damage to existing finished bathroom and potential mold or other damage to concrete floor may result due to the multiple floodings. Norse construction unable or unwilling to find the root cause of the water filling up the window well (see pictures attached) and flooding the basement and kept blaming previous work on the home as not being done properly. We reminded them that the prior window had never leaked water into the basement for the 12 years prior to their working on it so whatever was done previously was working. At one point basement was flooding for over 3 days before Bruce came in with a temporary preventative measure. Bruce now has indicated that he will be charging me a daily rental for the pump and for scrappy tarp that was used to cover the outside of the window well to try to prevent flooding, none of which were authorized spend.. Unbelievable. Pictures attached showing both tarp and pump which have not been removed from my property even as at this time. 3) Scheduling challenge with plumber unable to gain access to property. Norse construction called me at work. After some initial communication back and forth as we could not understand why plumber could not access property i took an excuse from work and advised Norse I was on my way back to property to let plumber in. Norse advised that there was no need to return to property and that we would abandon that attempt. A few weeks later i receive a $500 bill pass through from Norse for plumber not being able to access property. Bruce Jovaag refused to take any responsibility in that situation and the following is an excerpt of email from him: "As far as the plumber’s bill is concerned, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to provide adequate access to achieve said scope of work. This was not the case and as such the additional billing was incurred. Let it be known that NO additional work will be provided by Norse Construction on this property until such time as the account is brought current." - no acknowledgment that homeowner was on way back to figure out access and was told not to. 4) Attempted to get a face to face meeting to discuss and try to work through issues from a request dated June 17th but kept getting excuses like too busy meeting new clients, taking a day off to catch up etc all communicated via email and text and I finally arrived at conclusion that my business was not important to this contractor and requested a city inspection of work done so I could move on with a new contractor. My city inspector was surprised to find out that the contractor had put up all the stud walls without starting or completing the code required vertical and horizontal fire blocking to sill plate with drywall. As this is required I now have to have another contractor take the studs down to put the fire blocking up or use another material for fireblocking that is significantly more expensive. I hope this contractor will do the right thing now and refund for work not done and for any subsequent damage from flooding without my having to take legal action. Attached is one of the invoices paid for electrical work but as you can see from my basement pictures no electrical work was done. I know the electric subcontractor that was given the work and they never performed any service yet this contractor has refused to refund this amount and other amounts for authorized work invoiced and paid. 5) Additionally city issues 6 month permits. My permit just expired. The job failed to be completed in that time frame but I am sure this contractor will find reasons to blame everything else for why we were unable to complete a basement remodel in 6 months. I could go on and on about my disastrous experience with this contractor but my hope is that this reference and the pictures shown tell the story. I hope this inspires him to return the money paid asap. I will definitely be filing for help with the Better Business Bureau and taking legal action as is necessary. This contractor in my opinion gives the whole industry a bad rap it was very unfortunate for me that I selected this vendor from Angies List.

Response from Norse Construction, LLC
Wow, where do i start, Point 1: The egress opening cutting. Yes, it was done poorly. I hired a specialist who's wet saw broke mid cut. He made the decision to use a dry cut and failed to take the time to protect his work area during the cut. We all have bad days and this was one of them. The hole was re-cut correctly and, as the homeowner pointed out, we set up air scrubbers as well as paid an independent cleaning company to come and clean whatever she would have liked clean. This is what was offered to her. She only requested that the basement storeroom be cleaned. That's what we did. This is the first I am hearing that the ducts may need cleaning as well. This was never a voiced concern until now. Point 2: We cut 2 egress openings for this customer. The first hole was dug and, upon getting down about a foot or so deep we ran into a clay pipe that was run into the well. It needed to be re-routed but that would be an extra charge as it is not in my scope of work. She liked the first one so much she then added another. I gave her a quote for the 2nd which she then removed a sump pump from the estimate insisting if the first one doesn't leak why would we need it in the 2nd. Upon digging the 2nd pit we found 3 illegally run drains all dumping in below where the old window was. Again, homeowner was instructed there are 2 options, the first would be to run the drains to daylight or install a sump pump in the egress pit as was in the original estimate. I could not quote her in the running the drains to daylight as this is something i don't do. She already had the estimate for the sump pump installation. Her exact words in front of 2 of my staff and my plumber is "I'm not paying anything more for this window". She even had her own "expert" come and tell her the exact same thing. His estimate was $5,000 to run these drains to daylight. She then contacted me and said she wants me to complete for no additional monies. I'm sorry, the total cost of the egress window was less than $5,000! And yes, there are tarps and a sump pump still in her window at her direction. She requested, in writing, to have the hole re dug so her "expert" could see the work done. We complied with her request. When nothing was found that she had not already been told, yes, I invoiced her for her request. Point 3: The end result is that the homeowner agreed to payment terms and if you ask any of my other customers you will find me incredibly easy to work with in terms of payments. Yet, although She agreed to the terms in writing, she did not once comply with those terms. As such, and at her request, we agreed to pre-invoice for work to be completed. Even in saying this, on two occasions after her payments were late, i asked about payment and received her reply of "oops, i forgot". So yes, after almost 6 months of dealing with late payments and two experiences of the "OOPS" commentary, i refused to do any work on premises until the work was paid in full and her account was brought current. Her work was cancelled by Norse due to failure to pay. Point 4: delays in the project - I am at a loss as to how to seriously address this point. First, and VERY early in the project we had scheduled the plumber to arrive to re route her floor drains and terminate a 2nd floor drain. The day before she postponed everybody because she didn't understand what was happening. This was cause for a 2 week delay. She moved a single wall in her laundry 3 times. He stair wall changed 3 times as well. As I mentioned earlier, she added a second egress window (In February mind you) and that stopped us from making any progress on the basement until such time as the ground was thawed enough to dig or it wasn't raining or snowing. Then, just as everything was starting to move again and I had the electrician scheduled to do their work she stopped everything as suddenly now she wants a designer involved. Point 5: The Plumber - Yes, he charged her for a trip charge. What she is failing to express is that just 2 days earlier one of my guys could not gain access into her residence for this exact same non-functioning lock. I offered to put on a lock box for another door, i offered to even replace the bad locking mechanism. She refused all offers and claimed the door was functioning properly. I told her that if this happens with either the electrician or the plumber, she will be invoiced for their time. sure enough, when she knew the plumber was coming , he could not get in. Her message stating that she was coming home was to quote specifically... 11:44 am I am probably going to need a locksmith to get back in then 11:45 Ok I think i can get out of here at 12 and be there at 12:30 if that helps but i don't have a key Forgive me, but in reading the above does anybody see where she is coming home to let us in? And yes, this is the same plumber she had already cancelled with the hole digging the day before the scheduled work. Point 6: Her electric invoice - again, a bit of missing information. After paying for her electrical work on that invoice she delayed the scheduling of the work claiming the need for a designer. She then authorized me to use those monies to pay the plumbers service charge as well as the charge to come clean a shower head out for her. So no, this invoice was no longer paid even though she was wanting the electricians to start. Bottom line, the point to all of this is simply, NO contractor can guaranty what is unforeseen behind a wall or below the dirt. My one mistake was to attempt to plug these drains in her 2nd egress instead of walking off the job then, as I should have. This is why there are change orders. Secondly, Maintaining a schedule is a two way street. I can schedule folks for work but if you have questions regarding a certain phase, you need to ask them. I feel that I am pretty good at explaining what we do to homes and there are many comments in here that agree with that. But cancelling or holding a project the day before something is scheduled is an immediate 2 week delay to get those folks back in there because they're going to go work for somebody who can keep them busy. Third, payment terms are important. Don't agree to something you cannot comply with and hope somebody will understand later. It won't go well. How would you like it if you went to your boss on payday and he replied with "Oops, I forgot". This was the straw that broke the camel's back i'm afraid. The pay as you go system that i use for all my customers successfully would not work for Ms. [Member Name Removed]. We switched to a prepaid system. It, too, did not work. We stopped work.

It went very well. Often times, we would make additions or changes to what we originally wanted, and Norse Construction kept up with our changes in stride and they did an excellent job on everything! They also raised the walls and everything in our basement too per our request by about 1/4"-1/2" so when our basement floods (like it did today!), the water didn't damage anything. They added a drop ceiling with additional lights which look excellent! They tripled the number of outlets we had before which was nice The walls before were old and moldy, with 50 year old electrical wiring. They replaced all of the wiring so I don't have to worry about faulty wiring burning our house down. Then they insulated the walls. Another thing too, we were a little worried that Norse was doing electrical work on our house since they didn't have a licensed electrician. We hired a licensed master electrician to double-check the work after they were done and he said everything was to code and done very professionally, so you can trust their electrical work too. For the pricing, it seemed rather low (I'm not complaining!) compared to other quotes we received. You can see quite a long list of what they did on our basement. What made us choose Norse, though, wasn't just money. It was the Angie's reviews and their detailed quote and estimate. Bruce (owner) goes above and beyond in his quotes. He provided us a detailed architectural layout with floor layout drawings and price breakdowns for each section. Very detailed guy! I am very happy with their work and will definitely hire again!

It went well. My expectations vs actual were different. As I am new I have provided him, layout in my mind, he designed and provided me . My expectation was as they are pro in this field, they provide me all the best plans that suites my needs. I did not see that happen. May be my expectations were wrong i don't know.

Response from Norse Construction, LLC
First off, it was a $49.00 deal and the the deal is simply a floor plan design with an estimate. Not permit capable plans, simply a floor plan concept. I do apologize for any confusion but this was explained at the time of my visit on site as well again when asked to do revisions and re design work.

Overall, it went great! The project was a smashing success! Bruce Jovaag, of Norse Construction, is a pleasure to work with. He is very personable, and he is FANTASTIC at communicating with us. Over the course of the project, we probably exchanged about 400(!) emails and texts. Bruce was ALWAYS quick to respond and easy to reach. We are very happy with the quality of Bruce's work. As with any project of this scale, there were snafus along the way, but Bruce took them all in stride. If something wasn't right, we simply let Bruce know, and he took care of it. In the end, we were thoroughly satisfied! Bruce really knows what he's doing. I would advise any other Angie's List members to trust him and his process. We opted to hire a third-party painter on our own in an effort to keep our costs down, but managing the painter and coordinating his work with Bruce's workers ended up being more of a hassle than it was worth. Bruce has got his system down to a science; follow his advice, and you'll be happy with your decision.
Description of Work: Finished a 1,100-sq-ft basement. The project included a living room/theater area, kitchenette, bathroom, guest room, large closet and office. The project took about 3 months to complete.
