It took them 2 days of work to complete the roof. Sales/Project manager swore Allen Roofing did not sub out the job. It may have been a true statement, but perhaps they were contract employees instead. This is important because of the call backs, when the Project Manager, said he had no control over the workers and he seemed at the mercy of their schedule not the other way around. During the job, and callbacks, the crew did not speak english, so communicating concerns was difficult. English speaking foreman was not available during critical discussions about quality. For instance there was nobody who understood the air pressure on their nail guns was too high and driving the nails through the shingles every 2 or 3 nails. I showed pictures to the project manager and he said hand nailing would bankrupt them... The finished job appears water tight and looks fine from the ground, where most customers would be; but I am not an average customer. There were cosmetic and minor quality issues, which the company agreed to address. Unfortunately, the repairs were not much better than the original, related to cosmetic issues, especially since some of the torn shingles are just outside one of our bedroom windows. The quality manger for Allen Roofing said the jagged shingles was because the GAF ridge caps are perforated and do not tear evenly. Later, project manager said his other crews use a utility knife to keep shingles from tearing unevenly (and that "they learned a lot working on my roof"). After the most recent visit, I confirmed that Allen Roofing considered the job complete and the Project Manager said yes and began discussing final payment. So after visits from the Foreman, Project Manager, and Quality Manager, it appears as if things are as good as they are going to get. We'll pay the final bill, but won't recommend them. Each concern of mine was met with excuses and kindly condescending words, as if I had never put a roof on a house before (WRONG!). Needless to say, this company is for people who do not go up on their own roofs to inspect the job and are not very detail oriented like myself.
Description of Work: UPDATE 9/28/12: When the project manager said they had a lot of drip edge leftover, I didn't give it much thought other than hopefully the job received the proper credit. However, while working on the gutters last weekend I realized the roofers didn't replace the dip edge where it wasn't visible along the back of the house over the gutters... another shortcut I missed by not watching the workers close enough... *********** Total roof replacement. Asphalt architectural shingles. Roofer used GAF brand, we upgraded to the Prestique/Ultra line for additional durability and warranty. The worked directly with Insurance and Mortgage company, which was convenient. Some other companies left all the paperwork up to us. One of the few advantages we found. The insurance company agreed to pay for total roof replacement. Allen Roofing sales person, said they would complete job for exactly what insurance paid minus our detuctable. Final bid price was "flexible" based on insurance, which made me uncomfortable. Other roofers said this is our price, regardless of who pays, which made more sense to me. What won me over to Allen Roofing was their repsonsiveness, willingess to meet adjuster during the insurance inspection, and lastly the aforementioned paperwork.

Patrick Bilgere, the Project Manager, was very polite and friendly, and answered all my questions throughly. The fact that he was frquently on site made me feel more comfortable with the company. The roofing team were friendly and polite, and they worked efficiently- neither rushing nor slow-poking- and paid attention to detail. I like that! The cleanup was very thorough as well. It's the best roof this house has ever had. The gutter guards were replaced the following week. As for cost, I only paid the deductible; the rest was covered by my insurance.
Description of Work: I had hail damage to the roof, which required stripping one layer of shingles and the felt backing off. All damaged decking was replaced. They installed a drip edge; all the vents were replaced, as well as the gutter guards.

I called and got a quote because I had some loose shingles on my roof from a prior repair. I also had a gap in my siding. They quoted me repairs for numerous other things, that did not need to be fixed. They wanted $375.00 to fix the gap in my siding....another company moved the siding in place for free! They wanted $794.00 to fix the loose shingles. A handyman fixed it for $70.00. This company is a rip-off and I cannot believe they have such great ratings on Angie's List??

Response from Allen Roofing & Siding
Proposed costs for repairs from Allen Roofing & Siding are based on many factors, not just the material or mechanics of repairing a roof or siding. First of all, we must pay an estimator to go there to assess the job, then send Union employees to do the repairs, material, fuel, etc, and back our work with a satisfaction guarantee for 1 year. The grade we were given is unfair to Allen Roofing & Siding because we did NOT perform any work for this Member. We are not a rip-off firm but a highly trusted St. Louis based business that has 40 years of experience and thousands of satisfied customers. It is unfortunate the Member is not one of them but we provide skills and service no handy-man can guarantee.

First of all the customer service was great. Terry Swisshelm is great. The Team was ok but not great. They did a good job on the roof, as far as I can tell. It was the tear off of the shingles that was not good. They didn't cover my brand new Hot tub. So they dropped Shingles and Nails and even a 2x4 (which was holding up the tarped areas on the roof) right on top of the hot tub cover. So it was ripped and punctured pretty good. Also a shingle managed to get lodged in my bathroom window screen. Which was ripped. Terry has offered to repair and replace both. He came to the site when the job was done and inspected the roof and the clean-up. I am not mad at the job because it seemed like these guys were trying to do a good fast job. I am happy with the way the roof turned out. I would use Allen Roofing again. Next time I would cover the Hot tub myself.
Description of Work: Removal of exisitng layer of roofing. Installed 2 layers of 15lbs felt paper Installed shingles, flashings, caulked all vents.

When we bought our house, we knew from day one that it needed a new roof. After being very disenchanted with the roofer that our real estate agent had recommended, we decided to get bids from a number of roofing companies in the area. After we received a few, we decided that we liked the price and scope of work that Allen provided. We did have a few questions and needed clarification on a few things. The estimator, Tim Brown, was more than happy to return to our home, sit with us, go over the work, and answer every question we had. His customer service was above and beyond. The waiting list for work was 6-8 weeks and once we signed the contract. However, it took more like 9-10 weeks until they came to do the work. It's not a big deal though and well worth the wait. They came yesterday morning to begin work at 8am. I was amazed at how efficiently the team worked throughout the day. They managed to strip my old roof, lay the new roof (ridge vents and all) and get rid of every inch of debris in one day. There were a few things they needed to come back to finish up, since they were short a bundle of shingles. It was raining today, and they still came to get some work done while they could. They still need to come back, since the rain cut the work short. The roof is beautiful. It's amazing how much nicer our home looks now. We will need to replace our garage roof in a few years and I will certainly call Allen when it comes time to do this.
Description of Work: Replaced the roof on our home, except for the front slope, which is a clay tile roof.

I called them to meet the insurance inspector at the house. Allen inspected the roof along side the insurance adjuster. They determined it was damaged. A few days later, I received a quote. I only wish the insurance company was as responsive as Allen Roofing was.

They came out and looked at the roof and took the measurements. After about three weeks and a phone call, they finally sent an estimate. The estimated price was probably around $14000 or $15000. I would rate them based on the telephone conversation because I never talked to the guy face to face. For my overall experience, I would probably rank him a ‘B’ as far as his knowledge of the product and probably a ‘C’ from the standpoint of the salesman. Their responsiveness was good. I think as far as coming out and looking at it and doing the initial assessment, they were very timely. He was punctual and was here on time. I would give them a ‘C’ for professionalism because I personally think that it was lacking. I would not consider them for the job at all.

I called them, and they went over the estimate with me over the phone. I did not meet them in person nor did I see the product. They came over when I was not at home. They looked at my roof, did some measurements and mailed me the information. They gave me some upgrade options too. They were not forthcoming about showing the product and explaining what my options were; they just wanted me to sign the document. I did not get the work done. They are a big company and do commercial and residential work. I would consider getting a quote from them in the future, but I hope I don’t have to; their estimated price of $8500 was on the higher end.

Description of Work: A few shingles blew off in a windstorm and they replaced them. The did a good job, it took a while to get it done but there were a lot of roofs damaged at the time. They came out and put on a tarp in a day or two, then fixed it about a week later.

While I didn't use Allen Roofing because they do not work with flat roofs, the individual I spoke to was kind enough to refer me to another company who may be able to complete this repair. This individual was very nice and professional. If I need to have my house roof replaced in the future, I would consider getting a bid from them.

He was on time, quiet, neat and did great work. He even fixed another small piece of siding on another part of the house for free. They did get here in the time frame they gave me. He walked on the roof for the estimate but he didn't mention the roof being weak or anything else. They came out with about 10 people who could not speak English. They replaced all the plywood, which was not in the estimate and was not mentioned to me. They were the lowest bidder, but they made up for it by tearing off all the plywood and replacing it. They also replaced my flashing on my chimney with shiny materials and doesn't match with the mortar lines of the chimney. It's an eyesore.

THEY LEFT A COMPLETE MESS. THERE WERE NAILS LEFT ON THE DRIVEWAY. THEY DID NOT PUT THE WASH UP UNDER THE NAILS BEFORE NAILING THE ROOF. I COULD SEE THE NAILS SHOWING THROUGH THE ROOF EVERYWHERE. THEY ALSO LEFT ALL THE WOOD AND DUST EVERYWHERE WHEN THEY CUT THE HOLES FOR THE VENTS WHICH ALL DROPPED IN THE ATTIC. WE HAD TO HIRE SOMEONE ELSE TO CLEAN UP THAT MESS. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE.
