Roy and Sean saved our kitchen. This is a long story, but worth it. We previously had our kitchen partially remodeled by another contractor, which was a complete disaster. The contractor backed out of our project at approximately 60% completion, leaving us with an incomplete and poorly executed remodel. We felt defeated and unmotivated to fix the problem. In December 2018, we met Roy and his son Sean. They were unapologetically transparent with us about the state of our remodel and what must be done to make it right. We reviewed three bids in total- Roy was the highest (by only a little) but we felt that their expertise was the only path to a beautiful finish, We were right. Not only were they both extremely professional, but they were an absolute joy to work with. They were always up front about potential cost increases (such as our tile upgrade), and listened to our vision the whole way through. They also made several professional design recommendations that we integrated into the project. Roy’s team was dedicated to our project from start to finish (they do not job-hop). The job was complex- we were salvaging existing countertops (as we had just had quartz countertops installed during the previous remodel snafu) and it also involved demo-ing most of the kitchen while attempting to save the tops. We were able to save the island, but the sink top had to be replaced due to poor installation by the previous contractor. This project also included two custom-fabricated wood columns and floating wood shelves with integrated lighting. We had custom cabinetry made as well, and crown molding throughout the main floor to integrate into the kitchen. The project could not have gone any smoother. We are thrilled with our kitchen and would recommend Roy and Sean to anyone who wants the job done right. We feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Roy and Sean- their craftsmanship is unparalleled.
Description of Work: Our kitchen was in a state of disrepair after an attempted remodel had gone horribly wrong, and we brought in Roy and Sean to make it right. See details below. Summary of work completed: Full kitchen demo and remodel, new main countertop, full wall tiled backsplash, hood vent install, custom accent tile over stove, custom cabinets, custom fabricated columns at the island, custom floating wood shelves with integrated lighting, crown molding through main floor, kitchen island lighting,

I initially was interested in having baseboard installed throughout my home excluding three bedrooms. Once work had begun, a discussion led me to have crown molding installed in all rooms. I contacted the Finish & Trim Carpentry Co. after seeing one of their trucks in my neighborhood and secured their number from their truck. I was in the process of having several improvements made that would be both investments and upgrades. I had searched for qualified workmen by searching Angie's List, Home Advisor and by questioning people I knew. None of my searches led me to people who would do specifically what I was wanting. When I saw their truck in my neighborhood the name of the company was actually what convinced me to contact them. The call to Mr. Kinder was truly unique. But It was his clear explanation of how he ran his company that was compelling. He explained that when you contracted with him, his crew stays on your job until moving on and that the home owner had to be completely satisfied before leaving. He understood that home owners do not want to have their home torn up for months at a time. He brought samples of wood baseboard and made suggestions as to the best size for my house explaining guidelines to follow in making the selection. He has always been willing to work with my schedule and willing to answer any and all questions and I am a customer that has many questions If you want quality work and a contractor who will work with you, I recommend this company. As I stated earlier I wanted someone who could and would do work I would be proud of and eagerly show my family and friends. I had asked several people about doing the work and no doubt I could have made a decision to hire. In my experience, many potential workers will say they can do the work but once you see the quality of their work you know you made a mistake. I am a customer who does background research, knows the language associated with the job and expects attention to detail from those I hire. I got all of that from this company. Lastly, I would like to add that Mr. Kinders son, Sean, whom he has trained was the lead contractor and his attention to detail is mind blowing. Both workers stayed focused throughout the project and were fun to have in the house. Although that is not one of my requirements it is a bonus when you have strangers in your house for a week or more.

Was slow to start and the process was gradual, but - my - the product was spectacular! These guys know what they are doing for certain. It was easy to discuss plans with them and they were always receptive to my ideas. They were flexible enough to make some major changes without anxiety or confusion. If you are looking for an artful piece of woodworking, this is the company to go to. The price is substantial, but you definitely get what you pay for. We will definitely be calling them again in the future.

I must say at this point I am a retired Executive from the Heavy Industrial Construction Industry with well over 40 years of experience. Finish & Trim’s estimates and completion schedules were fair and accurate. I big factor for me with my experience level is their safety on the job and it was perfect. Finish & Trim gets my highest personal and professional recommendations. I would absolutely ask them back!
Description of Work: Finish & Trim Carpentry will be finishing their second project in my home within the next day or two. Both projects, approximately 6 months apart, involved extensive high ceiling crown molding installations and additionally the two contracts included the installation of Federal Empire framing around three archways. Two on the first project and a smaller arch on the second. One of the archways on the first project involved installing a set of 10 glass panel doors, side lights and a framed glass transom to create a new entranced into my home office. The completed results of the first project are exactly why Finish & Trim was asked to come back and finish the job.

They were very professional and did a great job. They were always on time and cleaned up everything every night before they left. They kept me informed throughout the entire process of where they were at, the next steps and as they needed questions answered from me. I did not feel like just another customer, they made me feel like I mattered and they were helpful with all of my requests and questions.
Description of Work: I had a complete demolition and redesign of my kitchen. My kitchen looks amazing - better than I could have dreamed. They spent the time to get to know what I was looking for and although I had a few very specific requests, they took the time to find what I wanted and give me my dream kitchen. I would definitely use them again!!

I'm very pleased with the way they put the estimate together and their work schedule and I'm sure it's going to turn out just fine. So far the experience with them has been excellent. I am looking forward to them starting in two weeks. The contract was signed this morning. The estimate was detailed. I got several estimates and the details they put into their estimate and the discussions I've had with the owner of the company is why I decided to go with them.

If you are looking for quality craftsmanship, finesse, and beauty then I'd hire Finish & Trim Carpentry. Roy and his team are consummate professionals and take the time and measures necessary to ensure the job is exemplary. I'm considering hiring them for projects I don't even need because they were so great to work with.....They made what could have been a stressful construction fun and enjoyable. He visited our home twice to determine the scope of work and meticulously described his proposal.
Description of Work: We received a detailed, professionally written proposal on 6-13-15 for a new walk in closet and new stair rails for a bedroom. The materials proposed appeared to be of a very high quality. We did not chose this contractor because his proposal was more expensive than we were planning to spend.

The name of the company, Finish & Trim Carpentry, is totally accurate. The owner is a Master Carpenter who has mastered the skills required for a project like this. He was fair, honest and open to my concerns. He took pride in his workmanship and did the job right...he didn't cut corners. The bookshelf/media center is a piece of furniture and it looks magnificent! Couldn't be happier. The complete job took about three plus weeks. The owner did the initial design prior to agreement. What helps makes this project stand out are the details. With his experience he made suggestions for features to improve the project...sliding shelves for media equipment behind doors with dark glass, eliminated knobs on the cabinet doors, hidden ventilation to allow equipment heat to dissipate, wiring for shelf speakers, wires and cable to flatscreen TV are in the wall, and in-ceiling lighting on both sides of the media center on a dimmer switch. They were able to match the stain with existing furniture in the room. Equipment was set up in the garage for the three week period. They arrived timely every morning. In the living room, at the end of each day, they consolidated tools to be out of the way and they cleaned up the work area. There was no mess. On completion of the job and after packing up tools and equipment the garage was cleaner than when they started. I have no point for comparison and wouldn't say that the job was inexpensive, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for", and in this case you do. I would definitely use Finish & Trim Carpentry again. I'm very happy with the results and would will not hesitate to recommend Finish & Trim Carpentry to anyone.

I would highly recommend Finish and Trim Carpentry if you are looking for a top of the line finish project. They likely won't be the least expensive or most expensive, but you get what you pay for, and their quality is top notch. I would also not hire them if you want your project done "tomorrow". Their work is thoroughly planned out and orchestrated carefully to ensure everything flows smoothly. Again.....if you want someone to do your project "tomorrow" then that's the crappy quality you will get. Finish and Trim will take their time to do a beautiful job. Everyone who walks into our home comments on how beautiful it is. We are also likely planning to have our home addition spotlighted in a local style magazine, which speaks for itself. Our most recent project was in the planning for many months before construction really began. They helped us pick windows, siding and other materials based on experience and reliability. They value strongly how all contractors practice and are on top of checking for others insurance, etc. I never once second guessed some of the people on this project. Finish and Trim has years of experience in building and we found that to be extremely helpful in our project. We had our final inspection today and everything passed 100%, no issues. Even the inspector commented how nice the addition was. We also put in a pool at the same time of the home addition. Finish and Trim overseed that project as well, to ensure the pool company wasn't skimming on the build. On top of the great work they do, these guys are very personable and polite and are easy to work with. It's a small father and son group, which we really liked-they are trustworthy. We called them many times on the weekend and they were out immediately to address our issues. They show up everyday to work on the project and are extremely neat. Most people couldn't tolerate the amount of dirt and mess we dealt with on this project, but they kept the project as clean as possible and were tidy with their work materials. We had trucks and cars cluttering up in the front of our home for months and no neighbors complained about anything. Bottom line...if you have a project and you're looking for someome who will do a high end result, these are the guys. These guys are finish guys, their work is very detail oriented. If you want something done cheap and fast, call someone else.
Description of Work: Finish and Trim did a custom home addition for us, adding over 2,000 square feet of living space in a 2 story addition. We actually called them after having used them for some custom trim work and various other projects (custom office, front door, metal balisters, custom tray ceiling in dining room) done several years back. We were extremely happy with everything they have done. The home addition project was basically opening up the back of our home and adding a new house on to it. We added a new kitchen, 2 new bedrooms and 2 baths, a new family room, dining space, and a game room in the basement. It was a huge project, spanning a period of almost 8 months. We actually continued to live in the home while the project was advancing. The addition was 100% custom from the kitchen to the floors to the mouldings. The kitchen project included a custom made stone hood from Francois and Company which weighed in at 1800 pounds. It was a 10 out of 10 on the "difficulty scale" but they installed it perfectly. They also did a beautiful maintenance free deck for us thru a contractor, with scroll balisters. We even last minute installed a new roof due to weather damage, and they helped with that also. Finish and Trim was the general contractor on the project and made everything easy on us, they contracted out to reliable plumbers, electricians, etc, for top quality work.

Prior to meeting the business owner (Roy, I believe it was) he was polite on the phone and punctual for our scheduled appointment. However, I was highly offended with how I was treated throughout his time in my home. When I attempted to show what I wanted put in I was told that all the information I have been provided in the past was inaccurate and given to me by "hacks who should only be mowing lawns". To say I was offended is an understatement when I personally know people who have provided me with this information. I was then lectured on his education as an architect and treated in a condescending manner, in front of my children. I welcomed you into my home with an opportunity to do business and provide you with money. Even if I was previously provided with innaccurate information, I sincerely feel that the situation could have been handled better than throwing a piece of paper at me, lecturing me on insurance and then telling me you really wouldn't be able to get to my project until September anyway. Perhaps you need to add to your educational resume a course on customer service and tact. I strongly recommend than anyone looking for a courteous estimate for carpentry work in their home stay away from this company.

Response from FINISH & TRIM CARPENTRY Co.
Ms. (Member name removed) tried to tell me how to build her bookcase. Stated her "designer" and several others had worked out a plan to "drill a wire thru a fireplace flue chase" and cover up a "ceiling mounted down light." Both of which are serious code violations. I did in fact tell her who ever gave her this info should be cutting grass and leave the building to the professionals. I also told her that in the event of a fire there would be an inspection of the property, and a person who is as professional as I am or maybe even more so would spot this in a minute and her insurance claim would be denied. The next thing would be county public works wanting to know who did the work. I then stated to her that I would not be interested in bidding her project because of the miss information she seemed to believe was gospel and coming from reliable sources. I handed Ms. (Member name removed) a contractor question sheet that she should use to qualify anyone who works for her, nothing was thrown, tossed, or in any way pitched at her. I complimented her on her home and said I was sorry that we would not be working together and then I left. I am a professional with over 40 years of experience in this industry. We carry workmans compensation and contractual liability insurance for the protection of our clients and their assets. In MIssouri, your home owners insurance does not cover either of these incidents. If you have a problem with either your on your own. If I had done the work the way she wanted it done and it failed or caused a fire, I would never be able to insure my company again. I am sorry Ms. (Member name removed) believes she was talked to in a condescending manner, that was not the intent, I only tried to use words and terms the average layman can understand without getting too technical or too deep into building codes and the reason they are in place. This couldn't have been better process and the results are stunning. Actually stunning is not strong enough of a word. We are completely satisfied with the outcome provided by Finish and Trim Carpentry. Let me be really clear about something. If you want something quick and cheap this is not the way to go. Roy will take his time, he will make every little detail as close to perfect as humans can, and you will pay a befitting price. This was about twice the amount of what I understand the national average to be for kitchen redos. We picked top of the line appliances (GE Monogram with Roy's contractor discount), top quality granite, premium cabinets, and very special flooring. So obviously that was a big part of the price. However, I cannot imagine paying some less circumspect general contractor to put all of this dollar-value purchasing in. Not everyone wants to hire a contractor who is a screaming perfectionist, never in a rush, impeccably honest, and appropriately priced for all of this. In a fair world, you get what pay for. We did.
Description of Work: This was for a complete kitchen redo: new cabinets, new appliances, new copper sink, electrical, plumbing, painting, trim, window-frames, granite counters, and custom distressed flooring. Roy acted as the general contractor and the subs did the floors, painting, electrical, and plumbing. He or his son Shawn were always there when subs were doing the work and they took full responsibility for these. The house was built in 1904, and there is therefore a lot of challenging aspects to installing new cabinets and more. The work took a little less than three months. Roy and Shawn compartmented the work from the rest of house at various stages making living with this more bearable. The scope of the project was vast and ripping out cabinets, taking up the floor, removing old fixtures and appliances, and preparing the empty space was as messy as one could expect. However, we didn't feel like it affected the rest of house due to the way that it was prepared (we had a surrogate kitchen in the basement). This process revealed a lot of the history of the house and the way it was both constructed and changed over the years. On the challenging side, a house this old does not readily provide level and square measurements, which is something that Roy and Shawn had to wrestle with constantly during the job.

I have to say I am quite disappointed in this company. I called them from the reviews that where in your directory from past customers. We made an appointment to meet. We had a pleasant meeting and he had stated that he was very busy and would not be able to start any work until the new year. I had told him that I was okay with that, but I still wanted an estimate so that I had a competitve price to go on with other company's I was having quote the job. A month went by and no quote so I called him and he said he would submit a quote. That was at least a month and a half ago and now is the new year and still not estimate. I have decided to go with someone else and sadly will not recommend this company to anyone.

Response from FINISH & TRIM CARPENTRY Co.
I am truely sorry that the letter I sent stating I would not be able to bid this project until after the first of the year did not satisfy the Barrett's. As I stated in the letter our costs for insurance and material would be changing after Jan.1 ,2013 and to give a fair bid these costs would need to be known. If I inflate the bid to cover what I think they would be and they don't rise to that amount, the client pays too much for the project. If I estimate too little, the project now costs me money to do. I try to extend a fair bid for what we do, and to give a fair bid to our client's I need to know what these costs are. Since the project would not be in progress until at least April of 2013, I had no way of estimating material and overhead that far in advance at year's end. My craftsmanship and attention to detail, along with using the best material available, and our written lifetime labor and material warranty on all of our constructs, and all at a very fair and competive price, sometimes puts my schedule out a little too far for some. Again, I am truly sorry that the letter I sent out in the fall of last year stating the reasons for not being able to bid the project in their time frame did not satisfy them.

Roy and his son were wonderful to work with! No drama! Overall if you understand Roy's process on how he runs his company and are good with it you'll have a great experiance. Roy stays on one job until it is completed before he moves on. Each clients gets his individual attention. He is fair and honest! I really like working with him. Our crown modling looks as if it was always there, then Roy would say " of course". I will have to start thinking of other projects in the house just so I can have them back to improve our home.
