It went very well. I called Mr. Campbell because I had about thee feet of snow on my roof and the roof was starting to leak. His crew came out the next day and worked for 3 and 1/2 hours in the cold shoveling off the roof and the deck and the sidewalk where there was sonw from the roof. After they were done I noticed there was still some ice in a few places. They came out again and got rid of the ice.

Great experience--- Scott was true to standing by his company's word. The Construction Group installed new gutters and Leaf Solutions gutter guards in early summer 2008. This summer I noticed erosion of yard dirt in one corner of the house, and during a late-summer downpour saw water streaming through a corner miter above the erosion. After I checked the downspout, gutter, gutter guard (none seemed the culprit), and warranty for the work, I called The Construction Group and described the problem. Scott said he'd come within a week, which he did. He listened to my description of the problem and never gave excuses, blame to others, or "did you check these basics first?" questions. He went up on his ladder to examine the problem area and caulked the leak thoroughly shut. No problem since. He seemed surprised the joint on the corner miter had split, but didn't blame or charge me. Scott stood by his company's warranties. That's why I recommend others seeking roofing and guttering work to The Construction Group.
Description of Work: Warranty repair of leaky gutter corner miter installed 2 years earlier (no charge)

After discussing with Scott Campbell, we were able to determine that the roofing was not a priority at this time. I appreciate his willingness to divert his attention from the original project - take a look at my concern - investigate the shingles for manufacturer's defect - and NOT sell me a roofing project at this time. This is the kind of honesty I look for when I seek the help of a contractor. I will be sure to come back to Scott Campbell at The Construction Group when I am ready to reroof. Excellent professionalism. I'd recommend him for all home projects. He's very knowlegable.
Description of Work: While at my home to discuss some other potential projects (fencing, decking) I expressed concerns over a part of my roof. It appears that the shingles are warping.

Due to heavy rains the ceiling under my flat roofed 2nd floor deck started to leak. This is into my library. I called Scott. He came over the next day. He had to remove several of the deck boards to get to the leaking area. Because of all the rain we needed to let that area of the roof dry before he could complete the patching job. Scott came back 2 days later and in a few hours had my roof patched and my deck put back togeather. We have had several bouts of torential rain since Scott fixed my roof and not one leak. I am very pleased.

Overall, things went very well. Scott kept me informed at every turn of the project. He consistently gave me project updates as to what was going to happen next and how long each step should take. I felt he really stopped and listened to me when I had questions, concerns and preferences. I felt the overall quality was superior. Most of the new deck followed the same plan as the original deck, but parts of the original was costom designed. Scott replicated these "odd" features to perfection. I was impressed!!
Description of Work: We had hoped to replace only a few obviously rotting boards on our deck - but the problems ran much deeper. A few chop cuts revealed that nearly the entire deck floor was rotting from the underside. It all needed to be replaced. Since this "small" project had just become an enormous one, I worked with Scott around our schedules to get the demolition started. Scott brought in a huge dumpster to accomodate the old building materials. He arranged to have the lumber delievered and started construction immediately.

Scott and his crew at TCG did an outstanding job of replacing and repairing our roof. Although we had our roof replaced 8 years ago, that roofing co. did such a poor job that not only did our roof leak in several places, some trusses and part of the decking had actually rotted. Scott came in and diagnosed everything that was wrong and exactly what needed to be done to fix it. Scott kept in touch with us every step of the way and fully informed about every aspect of the project. Our roof and repairs were done in two days and the clean up of our yard was meticulous. I would highly recommend TCG for any construction project.

We generally had a pretty poor experience with The Construction Group - and most of this stems from their lack of responsiveness and punctuality. We worked primarily with Jim - and his biggest issue is lack of accurate communications. For example, the initial bid to do this project was very reasonable (as the market has slowed for this kind of work). However, once we had to change the scope of the project due to a fire code in St. Louis Park, the price increased dramatically. I asked for a rationale for this radical price jump - and this was very challenging for Jim to provide. Since we had already paid our initial deposit, we didn't feel in a position to back out of the work. We were told they could get this project done in two days - working 11 hour days. The project took 8 days (although rain did play a factor). We were told they'd arrive at 8 a.m. to start work - we were generally shocked when they made it by 10 a.m. most days. Even now, when told they'd pick up the remaining scraps on Friday, we're still waiting for these scraps to be picked up (4 days later). It's all about expectations - and while the end result is a good, sturdy garage (to be fair - they did a nice job with the garage, and we've been told from some of the other sub contractors that it's a well-built garage), it was a challenging project for us. If they set more realistic expectations for their customers, we might have had a more positive experience (i.e. it will take us a week to do this project, we will start at 10 a.m. most days).

I went out and got a few bids the first time that I used them. Scott was very thorough in his bid and estimate, which I liked. He was very pleasant and easy to work with. They did a good job and cleaned up after themselves. I had a really good experience with them and so I decided to hire them again to do the roofing on my house. Their pricing was comparable to the other estimates that I received. The rental property was around $10,000 and my roof was around $13,000.
Description of Work: They installed new roofing on my rental property and also on my house. They did the rental property work 2 years ago and worked on my roof in April.

The Construction Group worked very hard to keep us informed throughout the project, and did a great job making sure work moved forward despite a few unexpected obstacles. Overall my wife and I are very happy with the job this company did and we plan to have them back next year to replace the remaining windows in the house.
Description of Work: My wife and I purchased a new house earlier this spring. The house was a bit of a fixer-upper and required a variety of repairs. We requested estimates from 5 different contractors to: Replace the rubber roof on our garage, the shingles on our house, take off the old wood siding and put up new vinyl siding, repair our cedar deck, put up new gutters and replace three windows. It took us about 4 weeks to decide on a contractor, but in the end we chose The Construction Group to perform the repairs. Of all the companies we interviewed, we felt that they were the most thorough, provided us with the most information and after meeting with them several times we just felt the most comfortable with them. We had somewhat of a limited construction budget and a lot of work to be done and Scott spent a lot of time working with us to find ways to stretch our project dollars. At one point my wife and I had trouble deciding on the style of shingles for the house so Scott made an appointment for us to meet with their supplier and look through the showroom. The people at Roof Depot were very helpful and gave us several different samples to take home and even provided us with addresses of homes nearby that had the kinds of shingles we were interested in. We had a bit of an issue with the shingles from the start however, It seemed that the shingles we decided on were no longer in stock when we wanted to start the project and it took 2 weeks for the new shipment to arrive. This set the overall project back a little further than I wanted, but Jim the project manager, developed a schedule that kept work progressing in the mean time. Work on the roof started two days after the shingles were delivered. The roofers worked very hard during some pretty hot temps and did a great job cleaning up when they were done. About 1 week later, the siders started taking off the old siding from the house. When they took the planking of the back of the house they found a lot of damage caused by carpenter ants. Jim took photos of the damaged areas and made sure that the wall was protected from the weather until the exterminator could spray. While we waited for the exterminator Scott and Jim wrote up a quote for the repairs to the wall which actually came in a little under what they quoted. The workers were done in about 10 days and the siding looks fantastic! Different workers put up the gutters downspouts and replaced the windows which we are also delighted with. Lastly, the workers replaced all of the rotten planks on our deck and replaced part of the railing that wasn’t safe. In all, the entire project took about 5 weeks which was about 1 week longer than estimated. Now that the job is done the house looks great! We can’t believe it’s the same house.

We contacted The Construction Group for an estimate to replace our roof, gutters and some of our siding that was damaged by a hail storm. I made an appointment to meet with Scott 2 days later. Scott arrived on time for our appointment. He took his time and gave our home a very thorough inspection. When he was done, he went over everything in detail with us and explained that he found additional damage on our house in an area that the insurance adjuster missed. He also made some recommendations on how to improve the ventilation in my attic space and suggested that I add some more insulation to what I already had. A few days later, Scott sent me a very detailed bid for the work and also sent product information that was helpful. Due to the additional damage on my house and the age of my siding, Scott explained that the insurance company should cover the cost of replacing all of the siding. Scott offered to take the matter up with my insurance company directly if I agreed to sign his contract. Scott offered to cancel the contract if he wasn?t able to get the insurance company to pay for all of siding. I agreed and about 7-8 days later my insurance company sent me a new claim which covered the cost of all of my siding. I couldn?t have been happier. About a week later the roofers showed up. They were really fast. There were about 8 workers and they took off the old roof and put the new one on by the end of the day. I was especially impressed with the clean-up job. There was always someone on the ground picking up pieces of shingles. I took the day off work to watch the workers and found the crew to be very friendly and very hard working. I don?t think they took longer than a 10 minute break all day. About 2 days later, the siding materials arrived and Jim the production manager called us to say that their supplier sent out the wrong siding and that it would take about 3 days to get the right siding delivered. 4 days later, the siding was delivered and the next day Jim and the siders showed up and started removing my old siding. The siding crew worked a little slowly but they made up for it in the details. The metal wraps they put around my windows and doors look especially nice. The siding took about a week to put up and the workers did a great job picking up all the nails. The gutters were the last thing to go on and they were done by the time I came home from work. The house looks great and even the building inspector commented on how nice the job looked. I have to say that this company really goes the extra mile to make sure the project stayed on track even when things didn?t go exactly as planned. I would recommend them to anyone looking to have work done on their house. They were really a pleasure to work with and very professional.

Horrible. STEER CLEAR of this contractor! The first contract Scott signed with us, he backed out of. That's right, he backed out of his own signed contract. We should have seen red and ran then. After Scott got his signed contract he was done being nice. I Did my own running around for roof samples and siding samples. The work dragged on for a very long time. It was a huge disruption. They were very disorganized. We never knew when they were coming to work, even on beautiful sunny days they did not show up and did not communicate when they were or weren't coming most of the time. They were extremely careless in removing our old siding and damaged many things which they did not offer to fix or replace, in fact they didn't even approach us and tell us that they did it. They broke our water meter reader, huge chunks out of window sills, broke wired electronic thermometer, broke data cable, etc. Things they removed from our house like hooks and house numbers were thrown all over our yard. Tons of nails, metal shavings, debris of every sort was and still is everywhere. They never cleaned up as promised. Their workmanship was all around shotty. Vinyl siding was falling off after they finished, gutters leaked, vinyl corners (J-channel) were not cut consistently or joined well, aluminum wraps were dented, aluminum window wrap had large bubble in it, caulking looks terrible, etc. The deck is put together so badly we cannot even believe it. It's as if they didn't even measure. Half the screws were not even in on the spindles and the stairs hidden fasteners were not even screwed into the stairs. They had pieces of their equipment laying around. With all these problems Scott invoiced us and said that we owed the rest of the contract amount immediately and sent us threatening emails. They finally, after much begging and pursuasion, came back and fixed some (but not all) things. We have since paid them the full contract amount. They invoiced us extra for things which they never gained approval for and at exorbitant charges for what they are and proceeded to file a lien on us for those things. They did not tell us that they were going to file a lien and they violated their own contract which states that they will use arbitration if any disputes arise. We have tried to contact them to work it out, and they will not return our calls. Received another invoice now with fees to us for filing the lien and lawyer fees. We have fulfilled our part of the contract by paying them in full they haven't even fulfilled their contract by completing work in a professional manner according to standard practices. Our deck is actually a safety hazard - the top of one of the stairs is not even attached, railings are wobbly and there are spaces between some of the floorboards large enough to break a toe in. I am glad to attach pictures for all to see examples of the workmanship you receive when you hire The Construction Group. It is a misrepresentation for The Contractor (TCG) to say that there were four inspections that would have identified safety concerns or installation violations. The City Building Inspector is the only authority on final inspection for safety/installation violation issues (Code Compliance). The City Inspector will only perform the inspection if a permit was taken out for the specific project. In this case, TCG had taken out a permit for other portions of the project but not the deck. Therefore, the deck was not inspected with the rest of project. After we found this to be the case, the City and the MN Dept. of Labor required TCG to go back and pull a permit for the deck so it could be inspected. Inspection failed. TCG was then required to make repairs to bring the deck up to code.

Response from The Construction Group Inc
The Construction Group Inc. responded to a request by the member's home for an estimate to make repairs to their home due to storm damage and negotiate with their insurance company who was unwilling to cover the majority of the damages. TCG responded, successfully negotiated insurance coverage for the roof on the house, garage, and shed plus all of the siding on the house and garage, new gutters on the house and garage and to re-surface the deck. While re-surfacing the deck, the installers found that the deck was improperly flashed when it was originally built which resulted in the need for additional repairs to replace rotten framing. Due to the customer working from home, TCG was able to immediately show the damaged areas to the customer and provide a verbal estimate for repairs which the customer verbally approved. Once the project was completed the customer was billed for those additional repairs. The customer also stated that she did not like the style of the gable vent above her garage. She stated that she would choose a different vent if we would order it and install it. The customer stated that she understood that additional charges would apply. We ordered the vent and installed it as promised and billed the customer for the amount. Once the project was completed, TCG sent out a quality control inspector who inspected the job and found it to be complete. Next, the city building inspector came out inspected the entire project and passed it. After that, the electrical inspector approved the project. Lastly, an inspection was performed by the customers own mortgage company who also passed the job. If their were truly any safety concerns or installation violations associated with the Shaw’s project they would have been identified during one of the four inspections. The customer was billed for the remaining contractual amount plus additional charges for replacing the vent and repairs. Several attempts have been made to collect this debt and a lien was filed for the outstanding balance once our offices received a written statement from the Shaw’s refusing to pay the final invoice amount in full. Despite our best efforts, we clearly fell short of meeting the customer’s expectations and for that we are truly regretful.

It took about a month for all the projects to be completed. It took a bit longer to finish than originally planned, but the quality of the work is good. There were a couple of little issues with the greenhouse roof, however this was the first roof for a greenhouse that this company has done. The roof for the greenhouse did turn out well.
Description of Work: They replaced the roofs for our home, and greenhouse. They also replaced the gutters and screens.

Things went well overall, with two minor-to-moderate snags caused by misunderstandings of the roofing subcontractors. Fortunately, the owner and construction foreman were easy to reach and responded quickly to acknowledge the errors and make things right. Among three highly rated Angie's List companies, The Construction Group got the bid for our roof/gutter/gutter-guard project because they offered the best package of price, value, assessment of the job, and products. Scott Campbell was able to make an estimate within a week of my calling and provided the best combination of advice, services, and warranties up-front. He described in easy-to-understand detail what the project would entail, in particular describing how to solve two problems (related to chimney saddle and electrical service mast) the other two bidders didn't mention or de-emphasized. The estimate was quite descriptive, and inclusion of TV antenna removal and re-routing of TV/internet cabling wasn't an issue. Product information and samples were sufficient, and warranties were automatically included, rather than-as some others do-hint as a haggling point. We were able to set a project date that fit our schedule. The roofing crew arrived on time and got to the job without delay. However, I noticed during the tear-off of old shingles they also tore off the shingles of the patio roof, which was not part of the project. I immediately called the project manager (Mike, Mark?), and he calmly told me I'd get a new patio roof for free because of their mistake. The minor downside of this error was a half-day delay to get the replacement shingles meant for the main roof. The roof was completed on time, the ancillary projects were done as asked, and things looked great...a wonderful job. The house and yard were left in good shape. However, a second moderate problem cropped up. Because of our driveway layout and City code, a dumpster placed on the street had to be removed before the job was completed. The roofing crew, which was instructed by the construction foreman to remove everything else, instead left garbage and excess material in a pile at the side of our driveway. Though the pile was small, neatly covered, and not an obstacle, it remained for five days until the crew returned to take it, and only after I called the project manager, who again took my side and reminded the roofers of their responsibility. The project was done quite satisfactorily and according to or better than specifications, and the faults that occurred were responded to appropriately. I'd certainly recommend them to others, based on the forethought and end product delivered. Probably deserve a B+ rating if I could give one.
Description of Work: Re-roofed our house and patio roof with 30-year Owens-Corning Duration shingles. Project included installing ridge venting, replacing chimney saddle, removing TV antenna, and re-routing poorly routed TV cable.

Things went well overall, with a minor problem caused by the gutter-installer subcontractor that were resolved satisfactorily, but a little slowly. Among three highly rated Angie's List companies, The Construction Group got the bid for our roof-gutter-gutter-guard project because it offered the best combination of price, value, easement of the situation, and products. Scott Campbell was able to make an estimate within a week of my calling and provided the best combination of advice, services, and warranties up-front. The gutter and downspout were of decent quality, and we got good advice about going with larger-diameter downspouts (at a cost compromise of thinner material than our old gutters). What sold us was the Leaf Solution brand of gutter guard-- it seemed the best design to exclude the most material from gutters without clogging. The gutter installers arrived as scheduled after the roofing subcontractor finished, and completed the job quickly, cleanly, and almost without notice. The only problem was the subcontractor underestimating the amount of downspout needed, leaving the job with downspout extensions short of contract-stated length. I called Scott Campbell and he responded appropriately to my concerns. It took over a week to get the proper amount of downspout extension added because of material backorder delay, but the job did get completed to specifications and satisfaction.
Description of Work: Installed 3-inch diameter seamless gutters, downspouts and Leaf Solution brand gutter guards as part of re-roofing job.

They paid a great deal of attention to the job. They went over the job once they finished. They had their people on the roof monitoring the whole time. The crew was great and very professional. They did excellent clean up and follow up. They even left a pack of shingles in case we have a problem with any of the shingles that are on the roof now.
Description of Work: They tore off the old roof and replaced the shingles, put in flat roof material, which is rubberized.

I am so happy with my new windows and doors. My 1954 ranch home looks so much more up-to-date. The Construction Group took care of everything, were very timing and did an excellent clean-up. One of the things I liked the most was they kept me informed regarding each of the steps in getting the job done. Removal & installation went so much quicker than I expected. I was surprised at how fast you can take out an old window and with virtually no damage to the existing woodwork. It was great to see the wonderful change from out-of-date windows to lovely cottage-style windows clear glass on the bottom & grids on the top. The updated look was instant and amazing. Amazing...it's even fun to wash my windows, now that I don't have to go out side to do it! They did a great job and were very nice to work with on this project.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate and discussed what I wanted with the company's representative. All 19 of my old wood windows were removed and replaced with new double-hung replacement windows and aluminum window and door wraps. They even did my very large living room picture window with 2 side windows. They also installed three new entry doors.
