Excellent! He was able to come out the same day. He was friendly, professional, and did a great job describing what the problem was, showing me how to work with a few things that I did not know about. There were a few light fixtures that had not worked in years, so it's great to have some light around here!
Description of Work: Installed 4 light fixtures and repaired 2 nonfunctional light fixtures.

John and his crew are excellent and I would recommend him to any of my friends or family. I knew my house had below code wiring (aluminum ) from the 1970's and that the wiring would one day need to be updated. I called John on a Sunday afternoon (one of the few electricians that is highly rated and avail. for emergency/weekend calls) and described the flickering lights and fluctuating power issues with my microwave. He was very frank with me and confirmed what I suspected the problem to be. He came out the next day (after 5pm--making it more convenient for me) and immediately spotted issues with my wiring. John identified issues that I knew existed and helped me understand the degree of danger posed by the issues. He gave me his honest opinion and bid the job accordingly. Based on my research, I felt that his bid for the circuit panel, breakers and new wiring was fair and reasonable. He has been nothing but professional in bidding the job, performing work and advising me on the what should be prioritized. Given that the house was wired with what is now considered substandard wiring and could be completely re-wired, he has been mindful of cost concerns, while ensuring that the most dangerous issues are addressed first. His crew is professional ,courteous and experienced. I was present for the major work--the panel install and kitchen re-wiring. I have no electrical experience, but found John to be very adept at communicating the nature and degree of my electrical issues to me. John's very good to communicate cost ahead of time and he kept be abreast of the accruing costs as he upgraded my wiring. Overall, great experience. A+
Description of Work: diagnosed electrical issues and brought problematic areas up to code. identified out of date and dangerous aluminum wiring and circuit breaker panel; installed new circuit panel, new breakers,; installed an dedicated line for a microwave; brought kitchen and laundry service up to code by running new lines and installing new outlets where needed. Installed bathroom fan and light fixture. John and his crew initially installed the new circuit breakers and panel and re-wired by kitchen and laundry. I then hired him to work on the main bathroom at a later date.

He gave a reasonably fair estimate ad then installed the outside electrical outlet and rewired some switches without much difficulty. However when he was in the process of remounting some new outside light fixtures he seemed confused about how to make them level and flush to the siding. He eventually figured it out with the help of my wife and then completed the job well. In the end it all worked out fine and we were satisfied with the final product.

John installed all new electrical in our new laundry area on the second floor of our house. He also did the wiring and installation for a chandelier in our front stairwell, as well as a light on our master bedroom closet. (Our house is 127 years old, so it is never an easy job to do!) He was prompt, efficient, courteous and professional, and despite working with plaster did not even make a mess. We highly recommend him and will use him again in the future!

I called John on a Saturday and got an immediate response. He worked me in to his schedule, arrived more quickly than I expected, explained my problems and the work he was doing to fix them, and solved my issues. Professional, courteous, friendly. If I have any further electrical problems, I will certainly call John again.

Very well. I called John last week to install 3 smoke detectors. He said he would be out doing small jobs on Saturday and could stop by (Saturday was very convenient for us because we both work). He and his brother Jim called first then arrived in the afternoon. They stood by the original bid he gave me over the phone ($175/smoke detector) even though our 1916 no doubt posed some unique electrical challenges. When installing the smoke detector in our bedroom, Jim noted that our outlet was not grounded and the box was not fixed to anything. I asked him if it could be fixed. They used an outlet box in their truck and put in a new one in very little time, and it is now fixed to a stud. They charge $75 for this service, which seemed reasonable to me. They used painters clothes and cleaned up after themselves. They were very professional. I will use them again when I need an electrician.

The experience was excellent from start to finish, including a very fair bid. I have a 100 year old house, and it was clear that John knew how to deal with all of the complications that can present. He did run into some unanticipated issues which increased the final cost, but he fully explained what he found and the options for resolution. I'm grateful for this extra diligence because he resolved risks that could have caused large problems in the future. John and Frank were professional, friendly, hard working and highly competent and trustworthy. Highlyrecommended!
Description of Work: Primary job was to replace an old fire-hazard electrical panel. Also corrected grounding, ran three new lines to correct problems with overloaded circuits and faulty wiring, and several other miscellaneous tasks (new fixture install, new switches, GFI outlets, and repair of a ceiling fixture).

John is a professional. He acts professionally, he does professional work, and I felt good about the work he did. He showed up on time and didn't waste time getting getting to work. He explained what needed to be done and how he was going to do it. He showed up promptly, assessed the work, and then moved right along. He estimated that it would take five hours and he was spot on. I didn't have to supervise or provide much input, he knew exactly what to do and worked independently. He gave me an estimate of $600 - $700 and came in at the high end of the estimate. I didn't ask for the 5% Angie's list discount, he simply gave it to me without asking. When I asked for it, he said it's already built into the price. I am very happy with the work and it went very smoothly. As I said, he's a professional and you can trust him to get good work done.
Description of Work: I had John rewire two bedrooms with no overhead lights where the switch simply turned on the outlets. John installed a light box in the ceiling that could hold a ceiling fan. John drilled a hole in the ceiling for the light box, ran all the necessary wires and then installed a dimmer switch for the light. He also designed it for a ceiling fan if I want to install one of those in the future. It took about 5 hours to complete the two bedrooms.

First, I chose John Kivel because he is based in the area I live in and I want to support local businesses. I had him come out to my home to do some estimates and complete a few small jobs. He was going to try and make it on Saturday, but told me during the week he had other jobs that day and would try to get to me as soon as possible. It turned out we ran out of time that day (I needed to leave in the afternoon), so he made a special trip out on Sunday to visit me, which was cool. John and I walked throughout my home and we discussed future jobs, though I had just moved in (place was still full of boxes) and I needed some time to better assess what and when things should be addressed. In the end, he moved an outlet (from mid-wall down to near the baseboard) and switched it from a two-prong to a standard three-prong. Also, I had him switch out two-prong outlet in a different room. While I had some relatively simple electrical work done, John was professional, friendly, and the work completed was very good. I have a list of future electrical projects and will certainly do business with him again.
Description of Work: Moved a mid-wall outlet down to the baseboard and switched it from a two-prong to a three-prong. Switched out a two-prong outlet in a different room. House walk-through with estimates on ceiling fan removal/installation and a porch light installation, as well as future two-prong to three-prong outlet conversions. Inspection of circuit breaker in basement.

Great Work.My wife and I had installed two ceiling fans and things seemed to be working, when suddenly a few days later, the breaker tripped and wouldn't release. We had a short circuit somewhere in the system.I did an Angieslist search and called John. He and his partner were able to come over the same day (without emergency service pricing)and after a short period of investigation, located the issue. With humor and a clear understandable explanation, they explained the wiring mistake we had made and advised a correction. They then quickly and efficiently replaced a switch that was contributing to the problem, and the worn out breaker and made some safety changes to our ceiling fan wiring.Great work!

I pulled a plug and got a shower of sparks. I plugged the cord in a different outlet and got a shower of sparks. Uh oh. Quick to Angie's List and found John Kivel. After establishing that I really had the electrical company on the phone (a little polish on that and he'll be a superstar) he said he'd be over in 20 minutes, knowing I had only 1.5 hours available. Wooosh! In, trouble shooting, fixing, replacing, advising, and he was done! I wouldn't let him go without setting up a return trip to do a safety inspection on the whole house. Looking forward to putting to rest that lurking feeling that something could be wrong in this old house.

John and his partner were very efficient. They worked quickly and cleaned up afterwards. They also worked with another service vendor to solve one of our appliance problems. We were very pleased at how smooth the appointments went. We will definitely call John for any of our future electrical needs.
Description of Work: John did a lot of on-site trouble shooting. We had several outlets not working that he was able to put back in service. Our main problem was in the kitchen. Several appliances were fed to the same outlet and were difficult to pull out for servicing. There had also been a fire inside that outlet box. He rewired everything and added dedicated boxes for each appliance so they can be properly serviced as needed.

The electrician I originally hired called at 7:00 a.m. and cancelled his 8:00 appointment. I had taken the day off to get the work done and additionally, I felt one of the kitchen fixtures was clearly dangerous and needed immediate attention. I called John at about 7:50 and left a message. He called back about 20 minutes later and agreed to stop by around 10:00 and take a look at what I needed to have done. He showed up a few minutes early and agreed to get started right away. He completed everything within two hours. I was very satisfied with the quality of the work. Everything works well.

I called John Kivel a little before 10AM on a Wednesday regarding an emergency service. He was able to get to my house shortly after 1PM, just as he said he would. Both John and his work partner were professional, efficient, punctual, and they were perfectly friendly and patient with my three very young children and puppy. They were in and out in about three hours and did a nice job cleaning up after themselves when the work was completed. Of course I am infinitely happy to have my window air conditioner functioning during this 95+ degree weather. We have worked with John Kivel in the past and wouldn't work with anyone else in the future.

I tripped a circuit and couldn't figure out how to fix it. I called John at 11 am on a Saturday (he was one of only a few electricians I could find open on Saturday). He called me back within an hour and said that he could come out to take a look at the problem. He called again around 2 pm to let me know that he'd be at my house within the half hour. He solved the problem quickly, and I was happy to pay the service call fee. I was very impressed by John's follow-through and his willingness to come out to my house on a Saturday on such short notice. If I ever have other electrical needs again, I will definitely call him!

John and his assistant were a little later than expected but called beforehand to make sure the time still worked since I had an appointment. They came in and I showed them the replacement pendant lamp I needed to be hung. The fixture was 17 foot up which was the only reason I needed help since I had easily replaced all my other light fixtures which took me about 20-30 minutes each. They stood staring at it and talking for a few minutes like it was Mt. Everest and going to be difficult. Then I showed them the fluorescent light fixture in the bathroom that was only lighting 2 of the four bulbs. They started with the bathroom fixture where the problem turned out to be my own ineptitude as somehow I hadn't replaced the light bulbs properly. I felt like an idiot but they were very nice about it. This took under 10 minutes total. Next we discussed hanging the pendant lamp which I knew involved unscrewing two screws and 2 wires from the old fixture and connecting the new one by reconnecting the screws and wires to the new one. John quoted me a price of $150 plus about another $100 for - well, I guess the trip charge and whatever else. He explained $150 was pretty much the going rate for hanging a fixture. I was astounded but having waited a long time trying to figure out how to do it myself at that height decided to go ahead with it knowing the price of a ladder could run me around $200. They hauled the ladder in and hung the fixture and despite a minor issue (they supplied two nuts I was missing) they were done in well under a a half hour. John gave me a 'break' on the price and 'only' charged $200 for about 45 minutes of work for the two jobs combined. No invoice and no receipt offered so I would guess that he didn't need to pay taxes on my job and share the support of our state and nation like the rest of us. They left with a farewell of "give us a good review!". I admit I do not know the going price for rehanging a light fixture, but if it really is $150+ then my dissatisfaction should be directed at electricians in general and not John specifically as that seems a high price for two screws and two wires and 30 minutes.
