When Mr. Janssen did show up (there were a number of occasions when he said he'd either be by to start work and simple never showed up), he showed up late every time, including when he came out for the initial estimate, which should have been our first red flag, but he is a relative of a friend and we decided to give him a chance since he claimed he'd been in the pool business for decades (this was true of his family, not him). The paint started to bubble within one month, and after investigating, we found that the only real cause of this is improper surface preparation. I did personally see him clean the pool, and my estimation was that he did a thorough job, however his work told another story, as did his attitude when we called him to ask what to do. He claimed he came and took a sample of the paint and sent it to the pool company, but never provided results. We did the same thing ourselves, and the company came back with the same assessment: because only one layer of paint (in a pool that is 42 years old) was peeling, and it was the new layer, it was a dirty surface rejecting the paint, not the paint itself. Mr. Janssen persisted in laying blame on the pool paint manufacturer and stated he could only warranty his work, not the paint. The paint manufacturer, Olympia Paint, was fantastic and spent hours with us on the phone, conferencing Mr. Janssen in to discuss the possible causes and solutions. Mr. Janssen was nothing short of belligerent, rude, hostile, and much more (we have the conversation tape recorded). He was unwilling, at any point, to take any part of the blame and stated that because the paint company offered to give us free replacement paint, it meant that they were admitting it was their fault. In reality, the paint company is standing by its product so staunchly that it's willing to give us $1,000 of free paint to prove it was good product. Mr. Janssen demanded he be paid in cash and has since refused to provide an invoice, stating "he didn't do anything wrong" (what that has to do with an invoice is still beyond us). We've asked that he just refud the labor portion of the job and we'd pay him for materials and he has typically just sworn at us and hung up. I sent him a message today and he called my husband swearing and calling me any number of foul names. He has been aggressive, hostile, has shown no work ethic, and is now placing threatening phone calls to my husband. He also seems to run a number of other businesses, making him the worst kind of contractor, in my book: jack of all trades, master of none. To add insult to injury, he left an absolute disaster of a mess when he left the job. I would not allow this man within 50 feet of my home or my loved ones.
Description of Work: Mr. Janssen was hired to repaint our concrete pool and finish some decking to cover a gap in our concrete. We'd received a few quotes but hired him because he is a friend of a friend, said he warrantied his labor, promised that the work would last 5 to 6 years, and would look like new. He and one other person came, power washed the pool, purchased paint, followed the directions on the insert to acid wash the surface, painted, filled, and opened the pool. Mr. Janssen also fashioned a small deck underneath our diving board.
