House we purchased had a finished garage but the walls were not insulated. Thermal Boundary filled the walls with dense pack blown in cellulose insulation and blew insulation into the attic. Before the insulation our garage would get to ambient temp, at the time we just had two weeks of -40 F temps (with windchill). After insulation, even in the coldest temps the garage would stay above freezing, typically at 40 F.

We used them now because we used them before in insulating out attic and we heard of them from our local neighborhood energy advisory. It only took them three days to finish the job. We have to completely trust them because they have to drill holes in the side of the house and then they and put some fillers into the holes after. I just felt uncomfortable. I think that for their sake, they should have confirmed to me how much they put in. They were very quick and I have this small doubt if they really did a good job or not. I have to assume that they did.

I still don't know if the problem is fixed because last winter was so mild. I thought the price was reasonable. Their responsiveness was good. They recommended a painting subcontractor and I was not exactly happy with that. I normally would have paid THERMAL BOUNDARY for the painting even though they bring somebody else in, they gave me the information for the guy and I set it up separately and I wasn't happy with the people that they recommended.
Description of Work: I used THERMAL BOUNDARY CORP for insulation. After I had an ice dam they came out to do tuck pointing and spot insulating; where after an energy audit determined areas that were not properly insulated. It also included minor siding repairs and some caulking.

The experience was generally good. They were on-time and efficient and willing to work with us to have a third party use an infrared camera to find missed wall locations after the first visit and to return to fill these found locations. They did accidentially break a single pane storm window during the second visit. Without asking, they took the window and had it replaced at no charge. (They did notify us about the window and what they were doing within a few hours of completing the second pass.)
Description of Work: Thermal Boundary blew cellulose insulation into the existing exterior walls of our home. Installation was done from inside and outside the house. They rough patched the interior holes and patched the exterior holes in our stucco.

David, the estimator for Thermal, was very thorough, walking and talking me through everything they planned to do. He also provided me with a very detailed itemized list of the work to be done. I had several other bids on the project but none approached the detail of David's estimate. I appreciated the thoroughness. A crew of three arrived promptly on the scheduled day and within four hours they had completed the project. They insulated the attic, some areas as and quot;warmand quot; storage areas and some as cold areas. The installers (who also own the company) seemed to know what they were doing and were able to answer questions that I had regarding the work. The work appears to be done well but of course we won't really know until this winter. I am hopeful that this will substantially reduce the ice dam problem on our roof.
Description of Work: Insulated the attic crawl spaces on a third floor attic. We hope this will reduce the ice dams on the roof.

Thermal Boundaries is a family business. It's a father and a couple sons, plus an extra employee or two who assists them. The father, who has many decades of experience doing insulation, comes out and does an estimate. When he arrived, he looked through my home and even drilled a hole in my closet wall to make sure that I was indeed in need of insulation. This threw me off, but he patched the hole... though it wasn't the nicest of patches. I was very impressed with the thorough nature of his quote. Out of the four companies I received quotes from, his was matched with one other company for most detailed. I liked this, because it meant less arguing over details if I was at all unsatisfied with the job. When I finally pulled the trigger, we set a date for after my electrical contractor got done replacing my wiring. They were happy to accommodate. As the date approached, I heard nothing from them, so I called to verify they would be in and at what time, what to expect, etc. Had I not done this, I am not sure they would have reached out to me at all and just showed up. I didn't like that. I told them I had moved my furniture to the center of each room so they would have about 4 feet between the clumps of furniture and the walls. That's what they wanted. They were eager to start working when they arrived and appeared to take their job very seriously. I let them work throughout the day and, when I arrived home, I couldn't stay there. My home, built in 1908, had plaster walls and, after they drill their holes from the interior, the air is filled with fine plaster dust. This is unavoidable, but I was disappointed that they did not groom me for this experience. A phone call three or four days ahead of time saying, and quot;Listen, we're going to be drilling holes, and probably a LOT of them, all over the interior of your home. Since your place is fully furnished, and it's an old home, don't even THINK about NOT covering your furniture in plastic tarps. You can get them for a reasonable price at any hardware store, but if you don't, that dust will get on EVERYTHING. Do the future you a favor and cover all of it before we arrive. Also, consider not spending the night there the first night after we do your bedroom. Trust us.and quot; When I told them about this, they said that their dad should have said something and, when he gave his quote, he might have. But it was over a month between when the quote was given and when the work was done. I firmly suggested a call a week or less ahead of time would have been a good idea and they seemed to take my suggestion well. Thermal Boundary does only a minimal job on patching. They put a round, foam core in the hole and slather on a foamy spackling, then level it off. But it's in no way ready to paint over and they don't suggest otherwise. You'll have to tape and feather out the scar with joint compound. This made life in my home pretty unbearable and difficult for two weeks after the work was completed and I still have a couple rooms to finish six weeks after the work was done. They do, however, patch the stucco from the exterior (and it was decent patching). BUT, it took them about two weeks to come out and patch it. Due to finding some spots with cellulose already packed in, they came in a little below their estimate, which was very nice. They could have lied about that and I would have been none the wiser. As far as how good the job was, they had challenges with my home, which does not have a standard, uniform distance between studs and was double-plastered. I can only assume that they have done a good job, but it won't be clear until we go through another winter and I do another energy audit. In the hotter days of summer, if the nights are cool, I have been leaving windows open to fill the house with cool, fresh air, then closing the windows in the morning. After work, I get home and the house is about 5 to 7 degrees cooler than it is outside and I have no A/C. So, I believe they have helped. And things are a bit quieter. Insulating an old home is a messy job and that's the way it will always be. There are opportunities for Thermal Boundary to improve their work, mostly in communication, cleaning and follow-up exterior patching promptness. But for the price, they are really hard to beat and I believe they did a good job.
Description of Work: Cellulose insulation was blown into attic, scuttle opening was weather-proofed and fixed, all exterior walls and attics were insulated with dense-packed cellulose, applied from the interior of my home, including vestibules and bay window. In a few places, cellulose was blown in from the outside of the home (where radiators made it impossible to do otherwise, or in a few attics where they could get under shingles. Stucco home, built in 1908, 1200 square feet.

The job took two days. The crew arrived on time both days. We are happy with the work. We're having an audit of the work done by Neighborhood Energy Connection to understand how much of the walls were filled. If NEC finds significant voids, Thermal Boundaries said they will return to fill them. We already notice a lessened temperature difference between the first and second floors of our house! Update on December 15, 2010: We're still happy with Thermal Boundaries' work. Since more has transpired about our project, I want to include an update. Upon the suggestion of a non-profit that helps homeowners improve the energy efficiency of homes, we had an audit of Thermal Boundaries' work perform with a portable infrared camera and a blower door. (About $150 to do this.) The audit found places that were missing insulation, which can happen because of obstructions in wall cavities or other assumptions about wall construction that don't apply for a particular house. (The auditor said the wall space totalled about 25 sq ft, which is above what they would allow for some private and public energy efficiency programs.) So, I contacted Thermal Boundaries to schedule a return visit. They showed up today as scheduled, took a look at the audit information, and then filled the areas at no additional cost, as had been discussed when we hired them. Having them stand by their word adds to my satisfaction with their work and makes me increasingly likely to recommend them. Thanks again Thermal Boundaries!
Description of Work: Thermal Boundary did the following: - Placed plastic sheeting over furniture that we moved away from walls. (They will do at least some furniture moving if needed.) - Blew-in cellulose insulation using both interior and exterior installation as requested by my partner and me - Plastered the interior holes from the cellulose install - Cleaned up the excess cellulose that was inside the house - Promised to patch the stucco that was removed where insulation was installed from the exterior when the temperatures are above freezing

Our call was answered in a timely manner and an appointment to do the work was within a week. They came on time, did the work and explained all that was done. There was an opening that had to be sealed from the outside which they did at no extra charge and also did a little job for us that had nothing to do with insulation. We received bids from 3 companies. Thermal was $600 less the themost expensive and about $300 less than the next. We feel they did an excellent job and would not hesitate to recommend them.

The experience with Thermal Boundary was mostly good. Jim did a very thorough estimate, working off of our energy audit and taking about 4 hours to identify areas in the house that needed to be insulated, including various attic spaces that aren't part of the main attic, our bedroom floor that was partly over an porch ceiling that had no insulation, etc. The estimate was accurate. The work was scheduled to take three days, and it only took a day and a half because things went more smoothly than expected and they brought extra help. The Neighborhood Energy Connection inspected the work using an infrared detector and found the walls to be about 97% filled. The inspector said this was considered to be very good for an old house such as ours. The inspector identified a couple of opportunities for improvement. When we get around to addressing them, I would not hesitate to hireThermal Boundary for the job. We qualified for rebates, which helped with the cost of project. We don't have enough data yet to show that this project has cut energy bills. But, I can feel an improvement in the comfort of the house. I can see that the snow on the roof isn't melting and causing icicles, a sign that you're losing heat through your attic. It might not be as fun as redecorating the living room, but it feels good to get this done.
Description of Work: Blown in cellulous insulation in the walls. Sealed the attic and added cellulous insulation. Weather stripped the attic hatch. Installed bath fan. Vented part of the attic space behind a knee wall in two closets.

They arrived on time and finished the job in about 2 hours. They were very courteous and knowledgeable and took the time to go over the work order again before starting in case I had any questions. They were careful to protect my carpet with tarps before beginning work too. They ended up adding more insulation than they had estimated because they discovered a small area of dropped ceiling and walls with plumbing that were not insulated at all, but they honored their estimate and did not charge extra for this work. They were also very responsive when there was a problem with a ceiling fan that I noticed the following day. It turned out it was not their fault but they still helped me to fix the problem without charge.

There was an excellent bid process with inspection of both areas to be insulated. The construction of the vault was explained as well as the possible problems with it. The bid included the worst case scenario with each of the problems priced out. The company showed up on the day and time agreed upon, began work immediately, and protected the interior of the house for the attic part which was accessed through a closet. On the vaulted part they removed the vents and one of the workers went inside the space to be sure they were reaching the edges. They finished promptly, cleaned up satisfactorily, and the price was below the worst case scenario. Great job!
