It went great. No pressure or head games on the thourough estimate and the 2 day install went smoothly with the intake and exhaust venting placed out of sight on my townhouse patio wall. Cleaned up well before he left. The A/C unit that qualifies for rebates is huge---but they warned me of this beforehand so i was able to have input into were it would go......normally it would go on my patio slab but they had a plastic base to put it on over to the side. They were not in a hurry to get paid as i schedualed a walk through/instructional session a week after a two week vacation and paid them then. Cost was 9143 minus 700 in factory and shop rebates and 5% discount for cash only. They submitted the Xcel rebates for me(650 total) but took until october to mail them to Xcel due to alot of business from the 1500 dollar federal tax credit program. Final rebate showed up end of januaury. A friend who refered me got 50 dollars and i got 50 for a neighbors referal.

Knowing that the furnace in my daughter's home was living on borrowed time, I decided to have all of the heating and air conditioning system replaced. I scheduled three contractors, that I had researched on Angie's List, to make bids on the job. We had already decided that Trane was the brand we wanted to install. Scott Rude, from Schwantes, was the first contractor to come out and look over the project, make suggestions and make a bid. Being winter and near the end of the "stimulus" money rebate program, understandably most contractors were very busy. Scott came within a few days, exactly on time, as scheduled. I had done quite a bit of research ahead of time, so I had a pretty fair idea of how much this project might cost. It was obvious right away that Scott knew what he was doing. He was very thorough and clear on what they could do, and made many useful suggestions on what needed to be done. He asked lots of questions and spent a lot of time helping us understand the options we had. Scott was extremely polite and helpful and didn't use any hard sell tactics or talk down other contractors or brands of equipment. When he left, my daughter and I looked at each other and decided that Scott and Schwantes were exactly the ones we wanted to work with. We caught him before he drove off and had him come back in to write up a contract and schedule an installation. We cancelled the appointments with the other two contractors, knowing that the price wouldn't be much different, and that we wouldn't find a more trustworthy guy to work with than Scott. BIG PLUS! Zero money was due until the job was complete, passed city inspection and we were pleased. You don't find that very often these days. With $2,300.00 of rebates coming, the cost was $7,500.00, and that was for all of the equipment being top of the line or one model down on a couple of items. They were able to start in about a week. Schwantes uses their own employees, no subs. The two guys who came to remove the old equipment and start the installation arrived early in the morning, right on time, and got to work. They wore booties over their shoes when they were any where in the house besides the furnace room and laid tarps on the stairway to keep everything as clean as possible. Scott came by a number of times during the two and a half days to check on how things were going. Everything went flawlessly. The installers were great, on time, neat and worked long hours. Scott was easy to reach by phone if questions came up and he made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. He even had the guys repair an old, poorly installed fresh air intake, and put in insulation in some foundation areas that weren't a part of the contract. Before we settled accounts, he spent a lot of time going over how everything worked with both my daughter and me. We definitely made the best choice, and my daughter has recommended Scott and Schwantes to a few of the people she works with who didn't know who to go with or trust with such an important and big investment. We can't say enough good things about this company and their employees.
Description of Work: I had Schwantes replace the furnace and air conditioner in my daughters 1946 home. The units had to be at least 40 to 50 years old. Schwantes also installed an electronic air filter, a furnace whole house humidifier, a condensate pump and line to the laundry room, some new heat runs and a new cold air return in the basement rooms, and $800.00 of updated electrical work.

It went very well. I was especially glad that they had a cancellation and we only had to go without heat for 1 day. The person showed us how to operate the new thermostat.
Description of Work: I called on a Fri. evening because the furnace was making a strange noise. A service person came out Mon. morning. He showed me that the heat exchange box was cracked. He monitored the amount of CO being released into the house. Very high. To make a long story short they installed a new furnace the next day and cleared out the old.

The sales rep/estimator, Tim, came out and walked the site at length with my husband, was easy to talk with and low pressure. He showed my husband where the new exhaust and intake valves would have to go. And talked about the different levels of efficiencies, etc Then we scheduled a date. Chris, the installer came out. They are licensed in St Paul. They did the job in a day and a half. The first day they took out the furnace and ac. They brought in the furnace, drilled the holes thru the walls necessary for the exhaust pipes, inserted all those - which could have meant removing ceiling tile, but we had removed the tile already. He put a special cover on that meets code, so there is not two pipes sticking as far out. Which is good because we had a real tight space in the back. They had to install a condensate line to our laundry tubs, as we didn't have an accessible floor drain. Then he left and went to the shop to do the sheet metal work. He brought that back the next day, installed that and also installed the AC. They removed the old concrete slab that the air was on and put in a new carbon one. Cost included a pump for the condensate line, and air filter. Chris was the installer, and he was very pleasant, and easy to talk to, asked if we had any questions. He wore bags on his shoes and didn't smoke which was nice. No loud radios. They cost included a new programmable thermostat, Then a week later after it was all in, Tim did a walk through with us, and asked if there were any problems. Its working great - and is soooo much quieter than our other furnace, I didn't even know it was turned on. The only small things was that Tim got behind on a meeting we had scheduled and didn't call until 35 minutes he was supposed to be here, but it was on a weekend.... and when we rescheduled hes was here right on time. Also he said he would be here when the installer came but he never came. But it wasn't really an issue. OVerall they did great, we were real comfortable with them.
Description of Work: Schwantes put in a new high effeciency variable speed furnace and air conditioner.(TRANE) They removed the old furnace and AC. The approximate cost was higher I think because of the brand. But they were not the highest bidder of four. The cost is the up front cost not including the energy rebates.

The sales rep was friendly and knowledgeable. The service person arrived promptly and although he ran into a few challenges with our old equipment, he was able to get the new system up and running. We have been using the new AC for a month now and we are very pleased with the quality. We appreciate that we were able to support a small, local company.

Dealing with Schwantes was a pleasure from beginning to end. Our sales rep was professional in every way. He did a complete Manual-J load calculation to determine our HVAC requirements, asked all the right questions and recommended equipment that was adequate for our needs without being overkill. When it comes to replacing a furnace or AC, the two most important considerations are: Does the contractor have the load calculation right, and do the installers know what they're doing. It doesn't matter if you have the finest equipment money can buy. If it isn't sized properly to your home, or isn't installed correctly, you've thrown your money away. The work was scheduled and carried out promptly and efficiently. The installers introduced themselves, explained what they were doing, went about their business unobtrusively and finished the job in a single day. Before they left, I was shown how to operate the new system and provided with manuals and related documentation. The sales rep visited the following week to get paid and to take care of any outstanding issues. At that time he also completed all the forms I would need to receive the Xcel rebates and explained how to claim the Federal tax credit. I described a couple of minor problems I had with the workmanship. He took notes and sent a service techinician out a few days later to resolve the issues. A backing plate for the new thermostat that hides the hole in the wallpaper was provided and installed at no charge. Schwantes also did all the little things that made the experience as trouble-free as possible, such as pulling the permits, submitting the rebate forms and registering the warranty. The only thing they would not do is my tax return. But they did provide me with the required documents should the IRS question my claim for the $1500 tax credit. I would urge anyone who is shopping for an HVAC contractor in the Metro area to consider Schwantes.

I had Schwantes come over to give me and estimate of a furnace replacement and also for the air conditioner. Tim wrote up three proposals for me to consider. After I made my decision, they were out to my house within a week to start working. Dave was very pleasant and industrious. He completed the job in two day and did a great job cleaning up after himself. He also went through and explained everything to me. Tim came back and gave a final inspection and everything was good. Also brought forms for me to sign so I could take advantage of the electric and gas rebates offered. I am very pleased with their work.

My experience with this business was stress-free and great from start to finish. Stacey was very friendly over the phone and was quick to accommodate my schedule. She scheduled for someone to come to my home that same day to provide an estimate for the work, even though it was not an emergency. Tim came to provide the quote and was wonderful! He provided a lot of information regarding the equipment and made suggestions as to what would be beneficial for our house. He also provided great information about other services without pushing them on me. When they came out to install the new equipment the three men were extremely professional, tidy, and efficient. They explained how to use the equipment and answered all of my questions. They also pointed out some plumbing issues that needed to be looked at. I truly appreciated this company and thank them for making an unfamiliar situation user-friendly!

Very business-like, organized crew. Diagnosed the problem, and the entire job was complete the next day. Comfortable people to invite into my home. No pressure to purchase the new furnace from them, which I appreciated. I must admit to not shopping around for the best price, because it is important to me that the businesses I deal with are first rate.

I had a good experience working with them. I found them through a hardware store in the area. They came right out to give us the estimate. The price ended up being cheaper than some of the other estimates that we had received and they even gave us a deal for the installation. There was even a rebate that applied to the project. They did a very good job of turning the project around.

We called because our central air was not cooling the house. Rather than opt to repair an old unit, we had the furnace (also very old) and air conditioner replaced at the same time. This increases our warranty and qualifies us for a tax credit. Our water heater was also on it's last legs, and we replaced that too. Everyone was courteous and tidy. The installer showed us how to program the thermostat, and the office filled out all warranty and rebate paperwork.

Problem occurred when I tried to start the A/C system this summer for the first time. Temperatures were quite hot that weekend and forecast indicated temps on the rise. Called company after hours on a weekend. Not feeling a rush, I left a message desiring a call back on Monday to schedule an appointment. Dispacher at company called promptly first thing in the morning (at about 8 in the morning when I said I'd be available to take the call.) I was offered an appointment for that afternoon (between 1 and 4) even though I stated there was no rush. I figured they would be busy because of the heat and it being a Monday. Therefore being offered a same day appointment was a pleasant surprise. Was called again about 11:30 stating that the repair guy was ahead of schedule and was available for a noon appointment should I wish to accept. Accepted and repair guy showed up at noon. While inside the house he covered his shoes with disposable shoe covers. He checked the evaporator coil drain pan, fuses, air filter, and condensor coils before looking at the condensor electronics. While doing so, he kept up a running dialogue of what he was doing and inserted some good information into the conversation. For example, he mentioned that microparticle air filters are h****** the blower motor. Later while changing the contactor he listed a lot of common issues with Central AC and how to avoid them. He also discussed the issues with the electronics of the electronic timer board in my compressor. He specifically stated that the timer board was still working OK and not to worry and mentioned the replacement cost for that board off the top of his head. The entire visit was about 20 minutes.
Description of Work: Central A/C was not functional. The compressor was not working. Company came out triaged the system, notified me of the current problem (a broken contactor relay), and replaced the contactor.

I called in the morning around 9 am. They said they would come as soon as they finished another job. A van was here in half an hour. He was very polite and professional. He wore booties over his shoes, put everything back if he moved anything, and was even friendly to our overly friendly dog.
Description of Work: Our heater had stopped working during the night. We knew there was an electrical issue, but not exactly what. He found the problem and had the equipment and parts necessary to fix it. The electrical issue ended up being a broken wire in the on/off switch on the wall (though it has never been touched!) I wasn't sure, but I thought $40 for a new switch and $60 for the labor of replacing it was high, that is the only reason for a "B" in the price category. Otherwise, I felt very comfortable with everything else.

Went very well. I was quite pleased. They did the work in a prompt fashion. The only ongoing issue with the new Honeywell thermostat, and it isn't their issue it is Honeywell's because it is a very advanced thermostat. Great experience. I called Schwantes for the inspection and estimate because I use them for my own home. They are a great company, very responsive, extremely helpful, fair and honest.
Description of Work: As a realtor, I represented a client buying a home. We needed the furnace inspected. He noticed right away that the furnace was in bad shape and he it tagged to not be used. He didn't need to do the cleaning or more of an inspection after that. He reduced the service call fee for my client. He gave us the contact information for the salesperson to talk to about a new furnace. We then had to get an estimate for a new furnace. The sales person met us at the house that same afternoon after the inspection. He gave my client 2 quotes. We gave the sellers both quotes. They then got their own estimates from another company. In the end, the accepted our estimates and used Schwantes to replace the furnace prior to closing.

This was one of two bids obtained and I decided to select this company based upon the quality reputation of their product and the competitive price of their bid. The initial interview was informative and included a thorough explanation of the alternatives. I contacted them several times for additional information and to clarify details prior to selecting them for the job. They arrived on time and the two day installation process went as planned. The installers were efficient and informative. The job was well done and I'm pleased with the results.

Louie was fantastic. If all employees of Schwantes are of his caliber, it must be an excellent company.
Description of Work: Central Air Repair. Louie arrived on time and proceeded to check all facets of our A/C unit. He determined that the outside condenser was clogged. Unfortunately, the condenser is located underneath our deck. While he was working with on it, ground hornets started coming out around him. Although we sprayed some Raid, he was stung several times but continued to complete his maintenance. Most people would have told the homeowner to get rid of the hornets and call when that was done. He cleaned the unit and checked that it was working despite several stings. This guy was amazing!

We called Schwantes at their emergency number in the middle of the night, and their serviceman, Eric, arrived about 45 minutes later. He quickly diagnosed the problem, and told us we needed a new blower. It took approximately an hour for him to do the job. We were very happy to have heat again. The outside temperature that night was about 18 degrees, and it would have been cold in the house by morning. Eric was very polite, friendly, and wore covers over his shoes in the house. We were very impressed with him. I don't know what we would have done without Angie's List, because our regular furnace man didn't answer his phone at 2 am.
