Doug and Jimmy were top-rate! We live in a 1923 Minneapolis home with a steeper-than-usual roof and a section of flat rubber roof. Doug and Jimmy were punctual, explained their process, and proceeded with great care so as not to damage gardens or structures with falling ice and snow. I appreciated the use of plastic shovels on the rubber flat roof and the systematic way they steamed away the ice dams, focusing on sections that needed attention, explaining why other parts of the roof did not need clearing (e.g., south-facing). We reviewed the work after it was completed and they were very attentive to assuring our satisfaction as homeowners. They were responsible, responsive and experienced. I would definitely hire them again in the future and highly recommend them to Angie's List members as well.

My ceiling started dripping on Saturday. I called Doug on Sunday - had a response within 2 hours. He said that he might be able to have his partner come to the house on Monday, or he could guarantee Tuesday morning and explained his minimum charge. Sure enough at 8am on Tuesday, he was at our house - our problem was big enough that to do a complete job, they would exceed the minimum charge time frame. Doug notified my wife of this and she authorized them to keep going. She informed them that we might have another area that might need treatment - they completed the initial area and then tackled the second area. I talked with her on the phone and she informed me that some of the snow that they cleared from the roof was against a basement window - they cleared that snow and cleared all of the snow off our decks. When I got home, the entire roof in the area of the leak was clear - the ice dams were gone, as was all of the snow. We have a couple of areas that could be future problems, but right now, our problems are solved. They could have recommended an immediate clearing of the potential problem areas, but, instead recommended we watch for problems - this meant that our immediate problems were solve - without inflating the bill. Doug was very professional and his crew (he ended up calling in a third person) were friendly. I think that the service was fairly priced - expensive, but priced at or below what was quoted. This winter in Minnesota has been an odd one - the snow has come in small increments - but has never melted. Quite frankly, I hope that we don't need Doug's ice dam removal in the future - but will feel comfortable calling him again.

After noticing a pretty severe ice dam on my roof on Sunday morning, I searched Angie's List and found some great reviews for Doug's Roofing. So, I called Sunday afternoon and Doug promptly returned my call and let me know he and his crew could come by on Tuesday afternoon.....very quick turnaround given the season. They arrived on time and quickly got to work. Doug gave me a thorough rundown of his process, billing, projected time spent, etc and made sure I was on board before they got started. Once he started, we noticed my outdoor spigot wasn't equipped to draw water for the steaming process. So, rather than calling it a day, Doug went to the hardware store himself to buy a new spigot to make it work.....talk about going above and beyond the call of duty! Work was completed in ~2 hours and Doug gave me a thorough recap of what he found along with some recommendations for how to handle future issues. His crew also shoveled all the snow out of the way for my house and the neighbors as well. They left the campsite better than how they found it and even put down some salt. A great experience and I will definitely call Doug next time we have an issue......you should, too.

Installed heat cables. Prior heat cables worked fine in past, but got old and burned out. Doug told me how much replacement cable to buy. Back side of house cables were not properly installed by Doug and now it is raining in my kitchen. Doug claims he told me there was not enough cable (200 feet), but 1. I sent him the dimensions of the house and he told me how much to get and 2. he never told me there wasn't enough cable or I would have stopped and gotten longer cables. When the ice dams formed I called Doug -- he blamed me, sent me a mean email in all CAPS. Very unprofessional. Would NEVER use again for any job. Why would you hire someone who doesn't stand behind their work and when you call with a problem they send you a nasty email in all caps.

Response from Doug's Roofing Inc
I was paid $550 total to remove the old worn out heat cables and install new heat cables that the customer purchased online for around $300. The new heat cables were 200ft, the longest made and two were purchased. The total cost was around $850. The customer did in fact provide me with a diagram of the home and a general idea of what she wanted done. The original heat cables extended up the roof about a foot. The new heat cables were extended up the roof about two feet. On the front of the home the heat cables were installed up a two story downspout, along the gutter, on the roof, and then back down the second two story downspout. On the rear of the home the heat cables were installed up a two story downspout, on the roof, down a one story downspout, one a lower section roof, in that gutter, and finally down a one story downspout. The 200ft cable was not long enough to run in the upper gutter as we would have been forced to install it both ways in the gutter in order to go back down the second downspout. Upon installation the customer was made aware of this and she was ok with it and said if there's any issues she can have us come back out to install another run in the upper gutter. This work was performed in the Fall of 2013 and the customer was very happy with my work and my labor price until this Winter when ice dams formed between the heat cables which is normal. She contacted me to ask why her roof had ice dams on it early this Winter. She was informed that properly installed heat cables will not prevent ice dams but they will help to melt channels in the ice which will help to flow water from the top of the ice dam. She was also reminded that we did not have enough heat cables to run in the upper gutter which she was ok with at time of install. Her response was we never told her of this and that we basically didn't know what we were doing and we tried to rip her off. My next response was in fact all caps but only to remind her she was ok with the install and that if there was a problem she would call us back out to install another heat cable in the gutter. I should not have sent the email in all caps as it was in pure frustration. On the day this review was written it prompted me to take a look at the home again. The heat cables on all three roof slopes seemed to be working as you could see voids in the ice dams on all three locations. My thoughts are this customer like so many homeowners with heat cables on their roofs with leaky ice dams are frustrated and in this case she decided that once she got a leak decided to write my review. The review was written several months after the work was completed. Prior to the formation of ice dams on her roof she was in fact so happy with my company she reached out to me to provide an estimate on her roof! Before this Winter my thoughts on heat cables were they are a great solution for preventing ice dam leaks but now I no longer feel that way. We have steamed several ice dams this Winter on roofs with working heat cables that were leaking. Due to the extremely cold Winter the heat cables are not working as advertised. Other companies who also specialize in ice dam removal have for years been saying heat cables are a bad solution to prevent ice dam leaks. My thoughts are they were right all along. Due to this dissatisfied customer my company no longer is installing heat cables on roofs, gutters, and downspouts. Prior to this customer we had dozens of satisfied customer who we installed heat cables on their roofs. What we can all agree on however is proper insulation and ventilation is key to preventing the formation of ice dams in the first place.

Doug was great! First he returned my call almost immediately, then got me schedule for the next day...a Saturday first thing in the morning. He was great with estimating, and telling me how the process worked. What was great is that he took the time to talk about how to possibly fix the problems in the future, and where t start, I really appreciated his suggestions. I would use him again, thanks so much Doug!

Doug explained on the phone what their plan was and the minimum charge. Once he was at the site and had time to look at the ice dam that we knew of, he explained how they would take care of it. He and his team were up on the roof moving snow off, he used his steam machine to melt and blow away the ice dam, then also found a second ice dam I wasn't aware of. He requested permission to continue working, since it would cost more money, and took care of the second ice dam as well. He gave me his opinion on how to try to prevent future ice dams.

I first called Doug on Dec. 26th about ice dams on my roof and concern that one of my heating cables wasn't working. He said that he could come out the next day to remove the snow and ice and could replace the cable, if needed. I told him I wasn't sure yet about getting the work done and would get back to him. When I called him the next day to say yes, he was already booked for the day, but said he would come out first thing on the 28th. On Saturday, the 28th, he sent his partner, Thor Anderson, to do the work. Thor was a couple hours later than I thought he would be, but did call to say that he had been working late into the night on an emergency roof leak. He apologized and arrived at the newly agreed time and did a wonderful job. The snow and ice were cleared from my roof, gutters, and downspouts. The cable was found to be working and was not replaced. I am very happy with the job.

I called in the morning and the owner actually answered the phone (I called 2 other contractors and got answering machines. It took a couple of hours for a call back from them). Doug explained the process and what his charges would be. There were no surprises. The best thing was that he came out the same day and did an excellent job. When I need snow and ice removed, my first call will be to Doug's Roofing.

Overall, the experience went well. Doug and his crew (as well as Thor Anderson) did a good job removing a large amount of snow from our roof and also steaming the problematic ice dams. Overall, they seemed to be very professional and upfront about cost per hour, etc. I know that they are not able to control how the snow comes down the roof and how it lands on shrubs below. However, two of our boxwoods next to our front door were damaged (one severely) by ice chunks that came off of the roof. (We will most likely have to replace one, if not both of the boxwoods, and they are EXPENSIVE.) I know that things happen, but I would have appreciated Doug bringing it to my attention (instead of me bringing it up to him) and knocking a little off the bill to compensate us for our damaged landscaping. Like I said, overall, I thought they did a good job, minus the damaged landscaping.

I had a couple of leaks develop due to ice dams. I tried to clear the dams myself, but discovered there was more ice than I realized under the snow and it was more than I could deal with. I needed to minimize further interior damage from leaking. I called Doug's Roofing in the morning and they were able to come out the same day. They called before they came, and arrived when they said they would. They have a 2hr minimum and they don't start the clock until they are on the roof and start steaming. They cleared the ice dams, shoveled ice and snow off the roof, and shoveled out the snow and ice where it hand landed on the walkway. In The job took a bit less than two hours. They were a team of three, Doug, Thor Anderson (who works with Doug on ice jobs as others have said) and helper Wally. One ran the steamer while the others shoveled. They were polite, efficient, got the job done, and cleaned up. I would gladly use them again.

Doug's Roofing and Thor Anderson Contracting worked together to address the ice dam on our home. It was mighty ice dam! I called Doug earlier today when one of our windows started to leak and knew right away we had a ice dam on our roof that was leaking into the house. I called at 3:30 pm. They were already working on a home in Hudson, WI but said they could come over as soon as they were done with that job. The team was here at 6:00 pm and worked until 8:00 tonight. They removed significant snow and ice from our home and did it in under two hours. We were the fourth house they addressed this problem on today and I am very grateful that they got here as quickly as they did. They were prompt, courteous, professional and left the roof and our deck clean. I was concerned we would sustain significant damage but, with their willingness to come over here and address the problem as soon as possible, I think we will be okay. I can't say enough good things about them and would highly recommend either service provider. Thanks, Doug & Thor!

Doug and Thor were knowledgeable, efficient and pleasant to deal with. They recommended things I should do to avoid future problems and areas I should check for water damage. Much of the snow shoveled off the roof landed on the deck which they cleared off even though we had not shoveled the deck all winter! I would prefer to spend money on something else but if it must be ice dam removal Doug and Thor are the guys to call.
Description of Work: I contacted Doug about a potential ice dam causing a leak around a bathroom exhaust fan. I called late in the day on Friday and Doug and Thor were out Saturday morning. They determined it was an ice dam and got to work to remove it. They removed the snow from the sections of roof involved and used steam to melt the ice. There is no longer any water leaking around the fan.

Have hired Doug and Thor (Thor Anderson Contracting partners with Doug's business) twice. Two years ago, we had a severe ice dam on the back of the house. Found them on Angie's List and they did a great job then and steamed away the ice. Fast forward to today...water started dripping through a window frame at the front of the house. We still had Thor and Doug's phone number so we called them right away. They were able to come out the same day and shovel the snow that appeared to be the culprit--no major ice dam this time. Both times they were responsive, curteous, professional and very thorough. We would definitely hire them again and refer others to them.

I called Doug to get an estimate on ice dam removal, and within 10 minutes his associate, Thor, was here (okay, he happened to be nearby.) I was given an accurate estimate at a fair price and Doug called me back and scheduled the work to be done the next morning. Everything went as promised. Doug was very easy to work with and after the job was done, he gave me some advice for the future and volunteered to give me an estimate this spring on installing some preventive measures. Overall, a very good experience with a time frame that helped me meet a travel deadline. Very professional and seems to take pride in doing a good job for his customers. I will call him again.

Doug and Thor did an excellent job in an efficient manner. They described what they would be doing on the roof, they did it, and they cleaned up when they were finished. They work well together. The total cost for this job was $600 with one-half each for Doug and Thor.
Description of Work: Our roof system has six slopes over the main roof, attached garage, and addition added after the original construction. The longest slopes are on the main part of the house with one slope on the south side and the other on the north side. We had a long, large ice dam on the north side running from where it met the addition to almost the length of the roof. The rest of the roof was covered in smow and ice from recent storms. We contacted Doug's Roofing about steaming the ice dam and removing the ice and snow from the roof. Doug told us he could take the job but that he would like to bring in Thor Anderson who would remove the ice dam. An appointment for the next day was set. Prior to coming over we discussed the job and the costs. We agreed to pay the cost of $300 per hour with a minimum of two hours. Any additional work, if needed, would be negotiated on site. From our previous experiences with ice dams on this house, both the price and the time were within our expectations. Doug and Thor arrived at the scheduled time. They had some trouble getting the steam system working and spent a significant period of time working on adjusting the machine. They did not charge for that time. Once the system was working as planned, they were on the clock. They finished all the work within the negotiated two hours. All the slopes were cleared of snow and ice and the ice dam had disappeared. Clearing the roof required shoveling snow onto our deck and on the driveway into the garage. Doug and Thor cleaned up the deck and the driveway without our having to request it specifically.
