+ 0 moreJoel was very quick in coming and providing estimate. He got the job scheduled quicker than he originally thought and his crew completed the two fireplaces in a week. Kris and Chris were, on time and very professional throughout the project. They cleaned up at the end of the job and other than the dust (can't be helped when you work with stone) they left my home very clean. I am extremely happy with the finished fireplaces as I was so tired of the original blah 1979 Chicago brick. The blue stone hearth is magnificent as well. Overall, I would recommend Joel and his crew to anyone interested in stone work. They are true masonry artists.

They came out to my place and provided an estimate for the project and told me what would be involved, including extra costs I might want to consider. It took a day to remove the old cracked warped concrete patio and replace it with a new paver brick patio. They did a quick job and the quality was excellent. They have a nice selection of pavers from which to choose and now I have a nice patio in my back yard that is not warped or cracked and looks really nice. Would highly recommend them to others.

+ 1 moreJoel was wonderful to work with with a high degree of integrity. I had a specific type rock in mind for the fountain & he searched through many tons of rock to find a suitable one. When he installed the fountain, he did all the work himself, moving & replanting a shrub that was in the way, digging the hole, installing the basin & moving the rock in place. He gave me instructions & materials for winterizing the fountain (very easy-just insert a tube in the hole in the rock so that the water is pumped out of the buried basin). There is no need to ever remove the pump. I would absolutely use English Stone again for larger work like retaining walls or installing pavers.

His bid was far, far less than the competition, he was dedicated and flexible in scheduling, and did everything he could to stay within our tight budget. He never tried to upsell us, but also didn't cut any corners. He came out twice for design, and was there bright and early, on time, both days of construction. The crew worked quickly, cleaned up, and Joel was there the whole time. Now we have a beautiful patio! Again, very strongly recommended!
Description of Work: Joel built a brand new paver patio, walkway and did pavers on our steps in front of 2 doors. He helped in the design, did the grading, and completed the entire project from start to finish. It took about 2 days to complete.

+ 1 moreJoel and his brother created a work of art turning an unusable side yard into an outdoor living space. The dry-stack stone wall was built as the focal point and has a beautiful curve and the look of an artistic puzzle. The custom flat patio starts as a trapezoid and ends as a circle. All the craftsmanship and professionalism made it a wonderful experience.We would HIGHLY recommend them.
Description of Work: English Stone took a small side yard and dug out a hill, shrubs, bushes and removed. They then created an outdoor living space with a intricately built retaining wall and a custom flat patio design.

+ 0 moreThese guys are artists! They stone used was a perfect match to the house and the wall was extremely well-balanced and level (which we don't see a lot of in our area). I would highly recommend this company for patio and retaining walls. In addition, they got us in touch with a landscaper and irrigation company, savings us money over the companies we were planning to use. The only complaint is that they put the materials on the boulevard and it messed up the grass. I really wish they would have been more careful and/or replaced the area with sod.
Description of Work: We had English Stone put in a 2 foot high retaining wall (~75 feet) along one side of the property to create a side yard. In addition we had them re-lay part of a brick patio as well as put in new front steps.

+ 2 moreI called Joel on his cell phone about a new window we put in a lookout basement room that needed retaining. We wanted natural stone. He asked for pictures and measurements so he could send an email bid. (this project was one of the smaller ones they do so he could e-bid) We told him we like the look of the natural walls you see in New England and he recommend Pennsylvania Fieldstone. He has pics on his website which we studied and we ok'd the stone. Having lived in Vermont for several years and learning Joel learned his trade in New England I was hoping his bid would come in near others and it did. They were scheduling out about 2 weeks. He asked for %20 down and for us to sign a contract he sent with the ebid. When he received the contract and deposit we were put on the schedule. He and a helper arrived on the day they said, with all needed equipment and we went over the well. It is about 4 ft wide, three feet front to back and 2 feet deep. They dug, prepped with gravel and built the wall in about 4 hours. The wall looks dry-stacked but it is mortared (just what we wanted.) I ok'd the work, gave him the check and it was one of the most painless transactions I have done. To top it off Joel and his assistant were both gentlemen.
Description of Work: Joel built a stone wall around a new basement lookout window well.

He was well prepared to execute the installation, we discussed my wishes for exact placement and orientation of the boulder, showed him the location where we wanted it and he took it from there. It happened that we had an exit for underground eavestrough draining next to the area we chose, and he pointed out that he could locate the basin to receive that drainage, thereby keeping the basin filled automatically with rainwater runoff! Voila! Painless maintenance. He was very resourceful.We appreciated his respect for our property, taking care not to make any ruts in the yard, and he even helped my husband bring a couple of our own granite boulders down to the water feature area, as I had wanted them incorporated into my landscape plan for future plantings.He did the installation in a little over 2 hours start to finish.I will definitely use English Stone when the occasion arises, and I heartily recommend this company to others needing a great firm to work with on a landscaping project. I often get asked by my own (interior design) clients for recommendations for tradespeople, which is the main reason I started subscribing to Angie's List....I need to know that the people I recommend will do a good job. I am pleased to say I can personally vouch for the professional excellence of this company, since I have now used them personally!
Description of Work: This was an Angie's List Big Deal that I responded to and ordered. I contacted Joel, the owner, and explained on the phone the look I was going for with the bubbling rock deal. He told me what all was included with the Big Deal offer, and I was very satisfied that everything I was looking for him to do would be included. I followed up the phone call with an email to him, at his request, so he would be sure to remember what we talk about. He called a couple of weeks later (we knew there would be some lag time, due to the busy season, which was fine with us) , told me he had found just the right rock for my wishes, and we set a time for him to come install the feature.He dug the hole for the basin, installed it and the pond liner that lapped into the basin to direct rainwater into the basin (to keep that from undermining the basin site over time) and the liner serves a a weedstop under the river rocks that he surrounded the rock with, to create the overall water feature. We had him dispose of the dirt from the hole in an out of our way spot, and I can access it for other planters that need soil. He set up the pump, adjusted the flow to the quieter amount I had requested in my email and made sure the flow ran over the rock in the sheet style that I was looking for, as opposed to a vigorous bubbler speedy flow.He placed the rock exactly as I had requested (I was gone when he did this, so I was very pleased when I returned to see it was all perfect) and I couldn't ask for a better result.

+ 0 moreAfter we purchased the big deal, Joel, the owner came out, measured the area and gave us an additional estimate. A few days later, we called him back, gave him our final decision. Initially we had to wait for about 10 days but they could come right away. The first day, they leveled the ground and brought in the stone bricks. We have a fenced in backyard so they had to remove one of the panels so that the equipment could go thru. If you have very nice grass, it could be a problem. Our yard has been neglected for years so having dirt was not a big deal. The next day, they installed the stone bricks. Each brick size was about 8x3.5x3. After laying them all, Joel spread polymeric sand, swept it over the patio so the sand filled the brick joints. Then he sprayed the water all over. They cleaned up and it was done! We could use the patio right next day.
Description of Work: We bought Angie's Big Deal to have them install a stone patio in our backyard (the original price was for a 14x14 patio). The southwest side of our backyard is shady and ground was really, really hard so nothing could grow so we wanted to cover that area. Besides, in spring when snow melts, that side of the backyard became a small pond every year so we were tired of it. So when we saw the ad, we decided to do it. The original price listed was $2,350, I think. Joel came out and measured the area and the area we want to cover was larger than 14x14 and the total square ft ended up with approx. 14x19. We also asked to pave the ground right underneath the gate because there was just dirt. Because our yard was so low, they had to put quite a bit of sand to level but within the two days, Paul and another young man (sorry forgot his name) worked very hard and finished everything on time. They worked hard and done a great job and we love our patio. Joel understood what we wanted so after the initial consultation, we did not have to do anything. The only problem we have now is because the patio looks so nice, the unfinished side of our yard looks worse than ever!

The crew went over where I wanted to place the sod and soil removed from the patio area that was consistent with my landscaping plan. They had to come back a second day to complete the job, and explained why that was necessary. I am very pleased with the finished project. I also appreciated the Big Deal as it made this project very affordable. I will consider hiring English Stone for any future hardscaping work and would recommend them to friends and family.

Prior to purchasing the patio I called Joel and he met me at my house that day and walked through what he could do for the big deal, and spray painted the area that the patio would cover. He also quickly wrote up an estimate for some other work that we are thinking about doing in the future. He is very easy to work with and quickly understood what I wanted for the front of the house. The patio looks great, and we are excited to use it this summer! We already have additional estimates and plan on using English Stone when we cover the brick on the front of our house and do other Misc. Landscaping projects.
Description of Work: I bought the big deal from English Stone for the 14' x 14' paver patio on 3/20/2012, and on 3/27/2012 we had a new patio in our front yard that looks like it has been a part of the home for years. English Stone built a 14' x 14' patio from the big deal, but it is not simply a square patio it curves to follow the sidewalk, and it has other curves to integrate flower beds. I thought that I would simply get a standard square patio since it was part of the deal, but when Joel came out he quickly showed me how he could make it look custom. It was a great experience and I look forward to working with English Stone and Joel in the future!

+ -1 moreJoel's estimate and design was one of the three estimates that we received. His ideas for replacing the existing steps was exactly what we wanted on the patio. Joel's plan was to reuse the majority of the existing pavers in order to save us some money. This was greatly appreciated. On the day of the job, the existing steps were removed and the damaged spa area was prepped very quickly. Joel custom selected and cut the rock for the new steps while is brother began repairing the spa area. They worked as a team in order to get the job completed on time. Due to our existing landscaping, the work was required to be completed by hand. They took great care to not disturb or damage any of our other landscaping. Joel worked with my wife to ensure that the new steps were exactly as she wanted. Their personal touch to the work was great. This demonstrated their professionalism and desire to meet our expectations.
Description of Work: Joel and his brother did an outstanding job in completing our project. They replaced our original block and paver steps with a new decrative rock and paver steps. Then they repaired a portion of our patio that that been damaged by our spa. They did not install our original paver patio, but they quickly and professionally repaired the area. They removed the old materials, repacked the base and hand selected the new rock for facing the steps. The job was completed on schedule and their workmanship was just great. The new steps truly add to our outside living space.

Description of Work: Joel is an artist, all the work he did for us was creative & beautiful (followed his recommendations)! He did our front and back steps, patio and boulder wall. He was able to work in a small space (other contractors were hesitant to tackle the job),because he was used to working in similar areas out East. We hired someone else to finish the landscaping, but were very pleased with his job.

+ -1 moreThe project was four days, from start to finish. The job site was well-cleaned when the project was completed. The only negative relates to the use of class 5 (the gravel); class-5 is used as a foundation and as a backing for the wall. I would have preferred less of it (perhaps substituting a fabric mess) behind the wall, as it makes planting close to the wall a challenge.
Description of Work: Joel and his brother build a low, winding, bluestone wall in our back yard. It integrates well with the yard's gradual pitch and with the existing patios (one brick, one bluestone). In addition, the wall incorporates one chilton step.
