The technicians were surprised by the problem with the arm, saying that they had never seen such an occurrence before. They asked if the awning had been subjected to high winds or other damaging conditions which it had not. And they did note that the condition of the awning and fabric indicated that this was the case. They said that they had to order a new arm and would call once the replacement part was available. After a few weeks not hearing, we called and determined that the arm had arrived. They scheduled installation for "late morning" last Friday. With no word from them by Friday mid-afternoon, we called to learn that the office could not raise the installation team but, apparently, they had experienced unforeseen difficulties with other jobs. They would be doing our repair either later Friday or the following week and asked which days would be convenient for us. We indicated that nearly any day would be fine and we did not hear back from them that day. With no further word, we called again on Monday morning and were told that the crew were in North Dakota for a few days doing an installation and they were not foreseeing our repair to be done until earliest this coming Wednesday. We were disappointed for the failure to keep us briefed on changes in schedule and for not being served in sequence. We had been very pleased with the awning purchase and even had recommended it to a neighbor who also bought one. With such a good experience on purchasing the awning, we were surprised and disappointed by this breach of customer service. After a few days delay, they came on a new promise date, and installed a new arm. The awning is now in good condition...
Description of Work: We had purchased an awning for our deck from G & J in 2010 and are very satisfied with the purchase and installation. But this year, we noticed that one of the awning arms was broken. G & J were responsive and undertook to replace the arm.

Both companies provided several awning options ranging in price from $600 to over $2,000. I decided on G & J because I liked the particular style they offered for the price, even though it was slightly more than what appeared to be a comparable awning offered by the other company. As it turns out, the two awnings weren't comparable at all, so I'm very happy with my choice. Project manager Steve Englund was very responsive to my initial call and in following up with the selection process. The awning was a custom order, but it took less time than anticipated and the company was able to install it the day after they received it. The installers were prompt, friendly and efficient, and the product itself is obviously of high quality, very sturdy and attractive in appearance. Finally, we are VERY pleased with the results; the awning has made a HUGE difference by blocking the sun effectively and thereby keeping the whole upstairs-and especially the back bedroom-much cooler.
Description of Work: In 2006 I had to remove a large American Elm tree in my backyard due to Dutch Elm Disease. Having lost the shade this lovely old tree provided, the rear (west) side of my house now receives full sun from early afternoon until sunset. The sun shining directly on a set of sliding glass doors that open from a back bedroom onto a tree top deck caused unbearable heat in that room during the afternoon hours. We decided an awning would help so I contacted two companies for estimates.
