Richard was very helpful with the planning process. He and his crew were fastidious, professional, and thorough. A time line was proposed and everything was performed in a timely manner. The remodeled kitchen is aesthetically pleasing and was within our budget.
Description of Work: Our kitchen was remodeled. The cabinets were refurbished, the countertops were replaced, a new sink and faucet were installed, and new lights were installed under the cabinets.

We expanded the work along the way. The change orders were handled professionally. The Project Manager, John Beckstrom, was excellent to work with. He was great at design and in making suggestions. John kept a close eye on all of the work. Ken, the carpenter, was very organized, proficient and wonderful to work with. The plumbing, tile, drywall and electrical subs were also excellent. With all of the additional work we added along the way, the project went on for months. It was well coordinated and turned out great. We are very pleased with the results. John and Ken seemed like family by the end.
Description of Work: Remodeling - new solid core doors throughout, new bathroom counters (3 bathrooms), new low flow toilets, new kitchen lighting, new windows in a bedroom and bathroom, new tub insert, new master bubble tub, new master shower, new ceramic tile & heated bathroom floor, re-do walk in closet, re-do hallway closet, repair stairway railing.

I found them on Angie's List and it was a drawn out experience because of the legal stuff that was going on with it. They took the cabinets out and actually replaced them, and the whole project was about a week. I went and visited them at their office, and I looked at different floor samples. They were prompt and the estimate was what I paid.
Description of Work: They replaced the floor with linoleum, redid the cabinets, and the microwave due to a fire in one of my rentals.

Remodeling project went extremely well, in-spite of the cabinets being 3 weeks late on delivery and sickness of one employee involved in demolition and construction. Meticulous attention to detail. Cleanup every night. Willing to work with your ideas.
Description of Work: Complete removal of old kitchen contents (dry wall, cabinets, etc). Installation of new cabinets, countertop, a new island. Removal of wall between kitchen and dinning room. New appliance installation. New flooring (separate contractor). Guidance of where to select and purchase new flooring, tiling, appliances.

I waited 22 years to be able to replace the worn out outdated 60's kitchen. It was well worth the wait. No doubt it was a big mess at first, but it came together and looks fabulous. The subcontractor's were very nice and I really enjoyed working with the owner Richard in all areas. After it was completed, I also used Angie's List for complete for carpet cleaning and duct furnace cleaning.
Description of Work: Redesigned the kitchen layout, mapped out every inch of space inside and out of cabinets, ordered and installed cabinets, coordinated total project all aspects, plumbing, electrical, sheet rock & granite countertops.

Both projects went very well, and we are very pleased with the results. All three rooms are beautiful, and the kitchen is a pleasure to cook in. We worked with John Beckstrom. John did an excellent job on design and carefully explained available options. John reviewed the major steps in the projects with us on a regular basis so that we were always clear about how the projects were progressing. John's attention to detail assured the success of the projects. Also, once schedules were set, work progressed as planned. During the course of the work, we made a couple of small modifications, all of which John accommodated willingly. John uses several subcontractors, all of whom were excellent with the possible exception of the tile contractor. We were pleased with the result, but the tile subcontractor was not as careful as the other subcontractors.
Description of Work: There were two stages in the project - remodeling a 3/4 bath upstairs and then remodeling both a full bath downstairs and the kitchen. Both bathrooms were tiled and all fixtures were replaced, plus we added lighting. In the kitchen we replaced cabinets, countertops, flooring, and all appliances, and we also added lighting.

The project went very well. The schedule was adhered to exactly as presented and the cost was exactly what was agreed upon - except for a couple of unforeseen issues. Ken, the carpenter/skilled craftsman did excellent work and kept the area very clean. He covered the floor to protect it (floor not changed). The biggest unforeseen problem was finding 2 bird nests in the hood fan vent - one at the top and one at the bottom and a broken board on the underside of the roof. Ken did the roof repair and replaced the hood fan cap on the roof. The other extra cost was to have the drain pipe from the sink cleaned out.
Description of Work: I had my kitchen remodeled, including new cabinets, new countertops, new sink and new appliances. John Beckstrom of West End Kitchen Center did the designing and putting a schedule of the work together as well as coordinating the tasks and working out the costs and setting the contract. (I purchased the appliances separately). The work included tearing out the old cabinets and disposing of them, purchasing new cabinets and getting them installed, ordering new countertops and getting them installed, upgrading the electrical system, some wall repair, replacing the hood fan duct. We did our own re-painting.

Work was completed in January 2007, but I figured I'd wait a year to be sure I really was happy with the work. It's been a year, and there were no surprises - their work really was great. This was a big job, and Richard gave me a schedule of who would be in on what day, and what work they would be doing. And, they pretty much stuck to the schedule! A couple of delays because their drywall sub was slower than they expected, but they managed to get us a functioning kitchen in time for the holidays (we had family coming into town), and completed the last couple of details in January. Pat did most of the demo and some of the other prep work, George did all of the cabinetry, and they subbed out the drywall, floors, wiring, and plumbing. Pat and George were very respectful and pleasant to work with. Flooring, wiring, and plumbing subs were excellent also. Plumbing sub came back out promptly to fix a leak in the water filtration system. Overall it went better than we could have hoped for!
Description of Work: Completely gutted and remodeled kitchen. Installed new wiring, insulation, drywall, hardwood flooring, cabinetry, granite countertops, water filtration system, and one exterior door. Also knocked out part of a wall and put in an arched entryway from dining room to kitchen that matched the other (plaster) archways in the home.

The overall process went well. The added expense of a sales man/design helper was needed by me as I was not familiar with the products and how they would fit together and work functionally. John was there for all of the design, picking out components and the installation of the Cambria, electrical and plumbing.
Description of Work: Kitchen - Cambria countertops and backsplash. New sink and garbage disposal, install new cook top. New light fixtures in kitchen, dining room and laundry room. Bathroom - new cabinet sink and medicine cabinet and light fixture.

WOW! Our experience was fantastic! This was our first project of this sort and we worried that we would live the proverbial nightmare. John Beckstrom made us decide on everything before he began the project and it was worth the extra time it took to finalize things. He provided us with a calendar, stuck to it, and informed us when a change would happen and why. He was easy to talk to and always returned our calls. He was patient when we sought to make changes, and provided us the information we needed. Ken, the carpenter was outstanding as were all the subcontractors that were used. They were meticulously clean, careful with our cat, pleasant to deal with, and most importantly, did excellent work! There were two manufacturing problems with cabinet doors. John and Ken both went to the plant to work out the problem - we only had to wait a little longer for new cabinet doors which were installed as soon as they arrived.
Description of Work: West End Kitchens (WEK) took us through the whole process to completely remodeled our 1937 home's kitchen. John helped us choose new cabinets and hardware, countertops, sink/faucet, WEK moved appliances and removed everything including the old flooring and underlayment, and one wall down to the studs. They also hauled away all the debris. WEK updated all the electrical and moved one light fixture which required ceiling repair. They installed a new range hood. They also updated the plumbing, insulated and installed new drywall on the outside wall. They completed any wall repair that was needed after the electrical had been updated. They installed the new cabinets/hardware, countertops, sink/faucet and underlayment for the flooring.

Donna worked with us to develop a plan that was within our budget. We were given copies of the final printed plans, which were used by the sub-contractors. They started by covering the existing tile floor (which was not going to be changed) very thoroughly to protect it before they began the removal of the old cabinet. Everything was cleaned up at the end of each day. Donna gave us a schedule of tasks to be done, and she showed up every day to make sure the everything was going according to the plan. The only delay happened when the granite fabricator was late in delivering the countertops, but Donna kept us well-informed about the status, and she followed up promptly. Overall we were very pleased with the way the project was handled, and the high quality of the sub-contractors and their work, perhaps with the exception of the plumbers (Vito Mechanical). There were two leak problems (see below), but Donna followed up quickly and made sure they were fixed to our satisfaction.
Description of Work: They removed the old bathroom cabinet and sink and installed two new ones with new sinks and granite countertops. They also tiled the walls and put up 3 plate glass mirrors, and installed a tall storage cabinet. A large decorative window was installed in an existing stub wall.

The process was excruciatingly slow. I would have a meeting with John, make a few decisions, then wait. After 2 weeks or so, I would call him, and we would then set up another meeting. I wondered sometimes if I would ever hear from him if I did not call him first. When the design was finally completed, the cost was a lot higher than I had anticipated, and it was already into Fall, and I didn't want my kitchen torn up that close to the holidays, so I decided to wait until Spring. I do think I have a great design now; John pays great attention to detail. So far I have only spent $1000 on the design, but I am undecided about whether to use West End or not for the entire project.
Description of Work: I am planning a complete kitchen remodel, and got a wonderful design from West End, but it took 9 months, and the estimated cost went from $50,000 (ballpark starting estimate) to $75,000 (final estimate).

I called WEK for a bid for our 5 x 7' first floor bathroom. Richard answered all my questions & gave a bid of $10,000 - $10,600. Once I gave him the go-ahead, he returned to do a detailed plan/drawing. The plan cost $500 up front - to be deducted from the first payment if we were to continue with WEK. Upon receipt of the first payment, we were given the 5-week schedule of exactly who was doing the work and when they were doing it. The schedule included long weekends for us to prime and paint. They also provided a temporary toilet so we were only without a toilet for the one night when grout on the tile floor was curing. Richard stopped by once a day to check on the progress and let us know if there were changes in the schedule. All the people associated with WEK were professional and respectful of our home and pets. It was expensive, (although I'm told kitchens & bathrooms are expensive) but it was well worth it to know we could trust WEK as well as know everything was done correctly.
Description of Work: They did a complete bathroom tear out and reconstruction.

John Beckstrom leads a team of experts who are very capable and courteous. Ken did most of the carpentry work but Ken is more of a master craftsman than a simple carpenter. John also subcontracted the services of a plumber, Larry, and an electrician, Pete, both of whom did an excellent job. John developed the project schedule and always kept us informed of progress as he coordinated the activities of his team. Ken gutted our 23 year old basement bathroom and replaced it with a fully functional, pleasant space complete with new shower stall, commode, ceiling fan, custom cabinets and a corian countertop on the vanity. In our upstairs bathroom, Ken replaced our sub-flooring which had bothered us with loud squeaks for many years, installed a new commode, a custom-made vanity, a beautiful mirror on our wall and a new ceiling fan. In my opinion, this group charges a fair price and does a stellar job. We look forward to enjoying our new bathrooms (and kitchen) for many years.
Description of Work: If you're looking for a reliable, experienced and friendly group of professionals, then I highly recommend John Beckstrom and his team. John designed and managed our kitchen-remodeling project last summer and we thoroughly enjoy the results. ($28,164) We like our kitchen so much that we contracted again with West End Kitchens to repair and revitalize the two bathrooms in our home. ($24,000)

RICHARD JOHNSON WAS AS TRUSTWORTHY AND RELIABLE AS THEY COME. HE CAME BY EVERY DAY TO MAKE SURE THE WORK WAS PROGRESSING. ONLY MINOR DELAYS (TWO WEEKS)IN SCHEDULE. WE REALLY LIKED THE PLANS THEY DREW UP (SEVEN!), WHICH WE MIXED AND MATCHED TO SUIT OUR DESIRES. WE HAVE AN OLD HOUSE, WITH MANY SURPRISES. THEY FOUND A FEW (KITCHEN SINK NEEDED A VENT, THE WALL WASN'T STRAIGHT, SO THEY HAD TO TAKE IT DOWN TO THE STUDS) AND WHILE IT ADDED TO THE WORKLOAD (AND WASN'T SPELLED OUT IN THE CONTRACT), THEY CHARGED ONLY FOR A PORTION OF IT. GEORGE THE CARPENTER WAS FRIENDLY AND METICULOUS. GREAT WORK. WE WOULDN'T HESITATE TO USE WEST END AGAIN, OR TO RECOMMEND THEM TO OTHERS.

JOHN BECKSTROM WORKED WITH US TO DESIGN AND BUILD A REPLACEMENT FOR OUR OLD KITCHEN. HE LISTENED CAREFULLY TO OUR REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDED SOME IMPROVEMENTS THAT WE HADN'T CONSIDERED. THE RESULTS ARE SPECTACULAR. JOHN MANAGED THE PROJECT FROM BEGINNING TO END. HE PROVIDED US WITH A DETAILED SCHEDULE AND KEPT US INFORMED OF ANY CHANGES. THEY FINISHED A FEW DAYS EARLY AND WERE VERY SATISFIED. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH JOHN AND ALSO WITH THE SUBCONTRACTORS THAT HE SUPERVISED. THESE ARE VERY NICE, POLITE PEOPLE WITH GREAT IDEAS. I HAVE FOUND WORKING WITH THEM TO BE VERY FRUSTRATING THOUGH, BECAUSE THEIR TIMELINES ARE VERY DRAWN OUT. THEY VISITED IN DEC OF 04 AND TOOK MEASUREMENTS SEVERAL WEEKS AFTER THAT. IT TOOK THEM MONTHS TO PREPARE THE PRELIMINARY PLAN, MONTHS MORE TO PREPARE THE FINAL PLAN AND ESTIMATE. THEY PRESENTED THIS ESTIMATE AND PLAN ALMOST A MONTH AGO NOW AND IT WAS MUCH MUCH MORE MONEY THAN THEY HAD INDICATED IT MIGHT BE. I ASKED THEM TO REDUCE THE COST SOME BY CHANGING OUT SOME MATERIALS, AND THEY HAVE YET TO GET BACK TO ME. THE MATERIALS SELECTION PROCESS WAS DISCONCERTING, BECAUSE NOTHING WAS PRICED IN THEIR SHOWROOMS. I HAD NO IDEA I WAS CHOOSING SUCH EXPENSIVE THINGS AND WOULD NOT HAVE DONE SO HAD I KNOWN (THESE ARE BACK BATHROOMS). BOTTOM LINE, I TALKED WITH THEM SIX MONTHS AGO AND AM NOT EVEN CLOSE TO STARTING CONSTRUCTION. THESE GUYS HAVE GREAT RECOMMENDATIONS AND ARE SO NICE, BUT THE PRE-PROJECT START TIMELINES ARE INSANE!
Description of Work: ASSESSED TWO BATHROOMS FOR TOTAL GUT AND REMODEL. TOOK MEASUREMENTS, PREPARED PLAN FOR SMALLER BATHROOM (WE PAID UP FRONT FOR THESE PLANS). ACCOMPANIED US AS WE PICKED OUT MATERIALS (TILE, COUNTERTOPS, ETC.) PREPARED DETAILED BID FOR FIRST BATHROOM AND PRESENTED IT TO US.

RICHARD WORKED WITH US TO MAXIMIZE OUR SPACE AND ACHIEVE ALL OF THE ELEMENTS WE WERE HOPING TO ACHIEVE IN THE SPACE -- THE FLOOR PLAN IS AWESOME! WE ARE SO PLEASED. RICHARD WORKED WITH US TO INCORPORATE DESIGN ELEMENTS AND FEATURES TO REINFORCE UNIQUE ASPECTS FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE HOUSE. IT APPEARS SEAMLESS TO THE OLDER PARTS OF THE HOME. WEK DOES USE SUBCONTRACTORS FOR SOME OF THE WORK. HOWEVER, THESE SUBS ARE LIKE EMPLOYEES OF WEK AS THEY HAVE WORKED WITH RICHARD FOR SO LONG. WE ARE ESPECIALLY IMPRESSED WITH THE TILE WORK, CABINETRY AND FINISH WORK. YOU CAN TELL EVERYONE ON THE JOB TAKES GREAT PRIDE IN THE FINISHED PRODUCT! THIS WAS A 5 MONTH PROJECT AND THE CREW DID A GREAT JOB OF KEEPING THE CONSTRUCTION AREA ORGANIZED AND CLEANED ON A DAILY BASIS. WE ARE SO IMPRESSED WITH WEK THAT WE ARE GOING TO HIRE THEM TO COMPLETE A BATHROOM IN THE BASEMENT!
Description of Work: WEST END KITCHEN REMODELED OUR KITCHEN, BACK ENTRY AND 1/2 BATH. THE WORK WAS COMPLEX AS IT INVOLVED REMOVING A WALL, SOFFITS, AND GOING TO THE BARE STUDS IN A HOME OVER 75 YEARS OLD. THE WORK THEY COMPLETED INCLUDED: BRINGING PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL UP TO CODE, INSTALLING NEW CABINETS, INSTALLING VERY LARGE BAY WINDOW (REQUIRING REINFORCEMENTS IN THE BRICK AND WALL STRUCTURE), APPLIANCES, FIXTURES, TILE WORK, COUNTERTOPS AND HARDWOOD FLOORING.

OVERALL, I FELT THAT OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THEM LEFT ME WITH THE OPINION THAT THEY DID NOT BRING A GREAT DEAL OF ENERGY AND IMAGINATION TO THE PLAN. INITIALLY THERE WAS VERY LITTLE DISCUSSION ON THE DETAILS OF THE POTENTIAL ''LOOK'' THAT WE WANTED, AND NOT MUCH EMPHASIS ON INNOVATIVE DESIGN IDEAS. VERY ''COOKIE CUTTER'', WITH NO ''PICTURE REVIEW'' STAGE, ETC...BUT ONCE WE EXPRESSED OUR CONCERNS, THEY DID IMPROVE SOMEWHAT, AND PROVIDED US WITH BETTER SERVICE. I WOULD SAY THAT IT WOULD BE DEBATABLE, REGARDING IF WE REALLY GOT OUR MONEY'S WORTH FOR THE 900 DESIGN FEE--ALTHOUGH WE CAME OUT OF IT WITH A DESIGN, THAT WE WILL LIKELY USE. WE WENT WITH THEM, SENSING THAT THEY WERE MORE DOWN TO EARTH, AND TRUSTWORTHY--AND BASED ON THE GOOD ''ANGIE'S'' COMMENTS...BUT LATER FOUND THE DESIGN SERVICE TO BE AVERAGE AT BEST, AND THEIR BID TO BE VERY HIGH IN RELATION TO OTHERS OPTIONS WE NOW HAVE. BID MAY BE OK IN COMPARISON TO OTHER ''FULL SERVICE'' FIRMS---BUT NOT EVEN CLOSE TO SMALLER FIRMS
Description of Work: THEY PROVIDED US WITH DESIGN PLANS, AND HELPED US THE VARIOUS UP-FRONT ELEMENTS OF KITCHEN DESIGN. THEY ALSO PUT TOGETHER A BID, OR TWO, FOR US, WITH SOME OPTIONS.

Response from West End Kitchen Inc
THIS RATING FROM THE MEMBER IS VERY SURPRISING! TRUE, THE FIRST PLAN WAS NOT WHAT HE WAS LOOKING FOR, BUT THEN EVERY EFFORT WAS MADE TO ACCOMPLISH THE STYLE OF KITCHEN HE WANTED. RARELY IS THE INITIAL PLANS EXACTLY WHAT A PERSON WANTS, IT IS A DISCOVERY PROCESS TO CREATE THE EXACT STYLE. FOR THE AMOUNT OF MONEY HE WISHED TO SPEND, THERE IS ONLY SO MUCH OF THE ICING ON THE CAKE THAT ONE CAN PROVIDE. TO HAVE HIGH-END APPLIANCES AND ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES ONE SEE IN A MAGAZINE, GRANITE OR QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS ALONG WITH WELL BUILT CABINET, IS NOT AN INEXPENSIVE VENTURE. I''M SORRY LELAND FELT THE DESIGN SERVICE WAS AVERAGE, I DIDN''T SEE IT THAT WAY AT ALL. HE SEEMED VERY HAPPY WITH THE FINAL SPACE CREATED, BUT WAS NOT RECEPTIVE TO THE COST WE ESTIMATED. WE DO PROVIDE A FULL REMODELING SERVICE, INCLUDING ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING, TEAR-OUT AND INSTALLATION, ALL DONE WITH EXTREME CARE AND VERY HIGH QUALITY WORK. I, THE DESIGNER FOLLOW THE WHOLE REMODELING PROCESS THROUGH FROM START TO FINISH, MEANING THAT I AM ON THE JOBSITE QUITE A BIT. I REGRET THAT WE DIDN''T MEET HIS EXPECTATIONS, JUST TWO DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THE SAME EXPERIENCE.

DONNA DID A GREAT JOB WORKING WITH ME TO DESIGN THIS KITCHEN, THROUGHOUT ALL THE REVISIONS BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE WORK HAD BEGUN. RICHARD AND DONNA WERE BOTH GREAT WORKING WITH MY CONTRACTOR, AND FIXING MINOR PROBLEMS WHICH AROSE DURING THE JOB. THE QUALITY OF THE CABINETS IS TOP-NOTCH (EVEN MY CONTRACTOR WAS IMPRESSED), AND THE CAMBRIA QUARTZ IS BEAUTIFUL! WEST END KITCHEN WAS AT ALL TIMES PROFESSIONAL AND PLEASANT TO WORK WITH. THE END RESULT IS THAT MY KITCHEN IS WONDERFULLY FUNCTIONAL AND EVEN MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN I HAD HOPED IT WOULD BE!
Description of Work: WEST END KITCHEN DESIGNED NEW LAYOUT FOR KITCHEN, INCLUDING THE PLACEMENT OF ALL NEW APPLIANCES, REMOVING PART OF A WALL, AND REFITTING INTERIOR SPACE. DESIGN AND PURCHASE OF ALL CABINETS, AND PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF CAMBRIA QUARTZ COUNTERS AND BACK-SPLASHES.

JOHN WELLS, OUR CONTRACTOR WAS VERY ATTENTIVE TO OUR NEEDS AND TOOK TIME TO PLAN OUT OUR NEW KITCHEN. HE AND HIS CREW WERE VERY ADEPT AT SOLVING PROBLEMS THAT AROSE DUE TO THE AGE OF OUR HOUSE (ALMOST 100 YRS OLD). IN ADDITION, HIS SUBCONTRACTING (ELECTRICIAN, PLUMBER, DRYWALL, FLOORING PEOPLE) WERE GREAT AND DID A WONDERFUL JOB. THEY NEVER LEFT A MESS AT THE END OF THE DAY AND WERE HERE WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE. JOHN ACTUALLY GAVE US A DAILY SCHEDULE OF WHEN WORKERS WOULD BE HERE. ALSO, WORKMANSHIP IN THE CABINETS IS GREAT AND THE INSTALLER, KEN, DID A MAGNIFICENT JOB PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER. ALL THE SUBCONTRACTORS THAT WEST END KITCHEN HIRED DID A GREAT JOB AND WERE VERY GOOD. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND WEST END KITCHEN TO ANYONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT REMODELING, ESPECIALLY IN AN OLDER HOME. I ALSO THINK THE PRICE WAS FAIR FOR ALL THE WORK THAT HAD TO BE DONE WITH THE REWIRING AND PLUMBING AS WELL AS THE REMODELING.
Description of Work: WE HAD OUR KITCHEN TOTALLY GUTTED DOWN TO THE STUDS. WE THEN HAD IT REWIRED AND REPLUMBED. ONE OF THE WALLS HAD TO BE REPAIRED. NEW WALLS WERE PUT IN WITH NEW CABINETS AND COUNTERTOPS. A DOOR WAY WAS ACTUALLY WIDENED INTO AN ARCH. LIGHTING WAS ADDED UNDER THE CABINETS. WE ALSO HAD A NEW EXTERIOR BACK DOOR PUT IN. IN ADDTION, A NUMBER OF ELEICTRICAL PROBLEMS WERE FIXED IN THE BASEMENT WHICH RESULTED IN THE BASEMENT CEILING NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. WE ALSO HAD OUR HARDWOOD FLOOR REPAIRED AND REDONE.
