It went well. Ours is an older house with some quirks and Rob had good solutions to suggest for our needs.

Rob and his team were great to work with. They created custom cabinetry to match our existing cabinets from the early 1960s and put in a formica backsplash. In addition, they repaired a vintage storm door with Jalousie windows and installed a vintage wood door. The work was done very well with great care and attention to detail. Rob did an excellent job explaining options and working through each element of the work. I would definitely hire van Tyn Renovation + Design again!

When you deal with a business for nearly 30 years you really get to know it. I have complete trust in Rob and his integrity of work, the choice of materials and his willingness to make you feel like the job he is doing for you matters—as much to him as to you.
Description of Work: Rob van Tyn has done the full spectrum of remodeling work for our 1910 Tudor home for nearly 30 years. He has replaced all windows with historically accurate replacements, did a full bathroom remodel, finished the attic and countless other as-needed repairs and maintenance repairs. He is conscientious and detail-oriented and his pricing is always fair and reasonable. He treats his customers with care and respect and will go far beyond what you maybe thought was even possible.

Rob and his team solved a complex spatial problem we had in our home. We had laundry units fail and needed to replace the units. New units are larger and we needed to have our space modified to accommodate new units. Rob worked with us and was able to see an end result that matched the original look of our home. This earned our trust and we expanded scope to include a bedroom built in to provide additional storage. We would not hesitate to hire again.

My porch is basically my summer living room; I spend a lot of time on it. The porch was original to the house (built in 1914), but it had been further enclosed by previous owners, who used cheap-looking paneling on the inside. The front end was visibly sagging, the trim in front was rotting, some floorboards had rotted through (I assumed there would be more rotted wood underneath that I couldn't see), and the windows and storms doors were in bad shape, so I knew it was time to take care of it. Once the internal structure of the porch was exposed, Rob explained very clearly to me what needed to be done as far as replacing support beams and posts. He walked me through the whole process of how they would remove the old windows and framing, as well as the ugly paneling, and how they would install new windows and custom-milled framing and window ledges, and new sheetrock and molding. As the project went along, Rob offered some suggestions, such as installing insulation under the floor and in the walls. I wouldn’t have thought of this myself, but I’m really glad I did it; we have been able to enjoy the porch later and earlier in the year. I decided I wanted more electrical outlets and a ceiling fan, and then I decided the ugly front steps needed to go; they were off-center, and the concrete was crumbling. Rob designed some beautiful new front steps with handrails that really enhance the look of the porch. I knew the project was getting bigger and would cost more than I originally anticipated, but I really wanted to make my porch the best it could be. Rob understood this, and worked with me to choose solutions that would be cost-effective while maintaining the beauty and quality I was after. Rob’s communication with me was excellent. He listened carefully to me when I described what I wanted. I sent him examples, and he showed me examples, so we were clear that we were on the same page about everything. He explained everything from pricing to the process of the work very clearly, and kept me updated about timing issues. His crew was friendly, knowledgeable, and hardworking. They left the site clean and tidy every day. Now I have an absolutely beautiful, structurally sound new porch that I can enjoy for years and years! I highly recommend Rob Van Tyn to anyone who is looking for great design and top-quality construction for their home improvements.

Robb was very professional, willing to explain and change detailed plans before starting work. He remodeled our master bath in 2018 and since we were happy with the detail and quality of work we asked him to remodel our guest bathroom in 2019. We were pleased with the quality of both jobs and with his supporting work crew. He also did beautiful work on cabinets and doors in other rooms while working on the bathrooms.

Rob was willing to do what I needed to have done. Especially getting my home handicapped ready. I needed it done very quickly. He also helped us pick out the perfect door for a basement/garage door entry way. He replaced frame and door. We also had 15 double hung windows put in. Which I just love. No more changing storm windows for winter. I can clean the windows myself. Rob and his assistant were such a delight to have around. Very helpful with suggestions where he saw needed. They both did a great job and we are very pleased with their work.

Rob built me two huge, lovely storage units for my clothes that are not only spectacularly functional for holding anything that doesn't need to be hung up in a closet, but beautiful to look at and use. They're made to last, too; I've had them for probably 30 years and they're as solid and beautiful as ever. He also replaced every (ugly) 70's brass doorknob in our house with salvaged crystal ones. They were tricky to refit, so Rob made backplates for them to solve the problem. Rob is very creative, cares about both the big picture and the details, and a delight to work with. Hire him -- you'll be very happy with his work!

Spectacularly. Rob was a great listener and gave fabulous advice. He helped us be realistic about what we should do with the house (despite the fact that meant we chose to do less to the house, given its size). He has an excellent eye for what fits, and how to maximize the utility of small spaces. Finally, he is a true craftsman. His work is precise and elegant. I know we will continue to use him as we work on our home.

Excellent work! Rob is an artist who designed and built creative touches that substantially increased the value of my condo, transforming an odd-angle corner into a perfect office cubby and transforming a bonus room into an awesome bedroom/media room. Rob also does handyman jobs like installing a washer, small repairs like patching a water damaged wall or changing locks, and weekend projects like adding better lighting to a sewing room or downspouts for water drainage. I have hired Rob to do remodeling work in three different houses and will hire him again any time I need work done. Rob always gets the job done, hassle-free.

Rob and his crew did a fantastic job with the renovation of our attic. We had a very unique space, which caused our needs for the project to change on the fly. Rob handled these changes with patience, and made some really creative suggestions that we ended up keeping in the project. His design ideas were fantastic, the work was excellent, and our attic was completely transformed. It quickly became our favorite room in the house. We also found Rob to be extremely responsive, his crew was reliable and got the job done on schedule, and the price was very reasonable for the quality and complicated nature of the work involved.

Rob took a very unique space, along with our equally unique needs, and crafted a plan for a really one-of-a-kind attic bedroom. He rolled with several mid-project changes that we threw at him, and came up with some really special design ideas that we never would have thought of. Our new attic is really a work of art!

VanTyn Renovation is a very small but exceptional remodeling company. The owner, Rob, is one person with 3 other part-time staff who he trains to the high standards he puts on design and quality of product. My basement was my opportunity to create a beautiful space out of basically nothing. I knew it would be costly. I could have gone for the run of the mill basement contractor who would have finished it in "record time" so they could move on to the next project, but I needed to trust someone fully before diving in. Rob invited me to see many of his other basement projects. I also got to see his cabinetry and woodworking skills that were quite impressive. His design work was far superior to the one the "run of the mill" contractor made for me and at half the cost. One of the best things about VanTyn is that he knows older houses and really appreciates working locally, in neighborhoods, and even restoring aspects of the house to the era, even when you might not think it works in a contemporary setting. He listened to my ideas and often together we came up with even better ones. This project was a huge undertaking and I knew it would be expensive, but if I was going to make it to my high standards, then I knew I would be paying a bit more. I chose to pay more and they delivered. It was a huge job with a large bathroom, a family room and a laundry room. He also renovated my main bathroom last year. I highly recommend VanTyn Renovation and Design.

Very impressed and happy with all the work Rob has done for me over the last 25 years. I trust him completely to give me a fair price and a more than satisfactory outcome.
Description of Work: Rob van Tyn is an exceptional contractor. I have an old house in St. Paul, MN which he has beautifully renovated. I have used him for both small and large projects. He has built beautiful furniture as well to match my house design. He combines the practical skills of a contractor with the aesthetic of an artist and architect. He does his own designs. The most significant renovation opened up a dark dining room and kitchen into an open design with a sun room. He had to remove a major supporting wall to accomplish this. I encourage you to review his website to see his artistry. He cares about his work and his customers long term.

van Tyn was an absolute joy to work with. Rob was very thoughtful and collaborative in the planning process and gave a very close eye to detail which this project required. The project needed doing but, when the city zoning department sent a demand letter, Rob was able to get on it and get it done. The fee for the project was perhaps a bit on the high-side (although I can't say for sure because I didn't put it out for bid after talking with Rob) but definitely reasonable considering the speed with which the big project got done and the corners that did not get cut. So, all-in-all, great value. I've since had van Tyn construction do a couple of smaller projects and am consistently amazed with the skill and finesse the end results demonstrate. If I need stuff done around the (old and constantly falling apart...) house, Rob is my first call.

Long story short: Rob refused to finish the design work because he "was too busy" and breached our contract. After some haggling, he agreed to a partial refund of the down payment and probably only to avoid a court claim. Very unprofessional.

Description of Work: He made 3 custom radiator covers for radiators on my first floor. I had problems with the temperature on that floor, and he made gorgeous cherry wood and metal covers with granite tops to both make the radiators look ever so much more lovely, but also to act as heat sinks. The granite heats up when the radiators are on and then it slowly loses that heat after the radiators go off. This has smoothed out the peaks and valleys in the temperature on that floor, making me much more comfortable. The style of the wood and metal complements the Asia decor in that part of my house.

Description of Work: They installed custom-built radiator covers on my first floor. The covers have metal grills set into a custom-milled cherry frame, and they are topped with granite. They were designed to be beautiful and energy-efficient. The granite acts as a heat sink and helps to keep the temperature on my first floor more even. I only have 3 radiators for a very large space and I tended to experience swings in temperature. That no longer happens. Now when the radiator goes off, the granite continues to release heat into my rooms. A brilliant solution.

.Rob has a superb design sense and an excellent feel for old houses. He has always made the remodeled parts of the house feel as though they were always there. He managed to fit a 4-piece bathroom into my second floor bathroom, while still making it feel spacious. I have a Japanese soaking tub, a separate shower, built in vanity and medicine cabinet, as well as a toilet in the same space in which I'd previously had a tub, sink and toilet. The room positively glows, and it is the soothing retreat that I think everyone would like for a bathroom. Rob is an excellent communicator, and he does his homework on your house before he begins. As a result, you are far less likely to experience those unpleasant surprises that frequently occur with remodeling. He can anticipate what are likely to be problem areas, investigate before he does the bid, and alert you to things that may become inordinately expensive. He keeps you updated on progress constantly, he and his crew kept the house looking as clean and neat as it could while being under construction. Rob has found wonderful old doors and cabinets that he has refinished and reused in my projects over the years. He has even been able to reuse parts of my house in various creative ways. He has also succeeded in doing things that other professionals told me simply could not be done. He designed and built a sliding glass door for my second floor bathroom so that it slides back and forth between the shower and tub area. In order to do this, he had to create his own hanging system, and then he had to invent a tool that could be used to keep the door hung properly. I have never encountered anyone else who was willing to go to these lengths to give me what I wanted! When he refinished my basement, he gave me a large family room, a wine cellar with exposed limestone walls that is unheated, a laundry room/workshop, and a large hallway that can be used as a place to set up the pingpong table. He suggested stainless steel, angled window sills to help bring more light into the space, and he also put up a stamped metal ceiling. The result is that although the space is mostly below ground, light bounces all around the area. Wine stays wonderfully cool in the wine cellar year round, and he built the wine cellar out of clay drainage tiles that he suspended in a frame. It is a lovely, attractive piece at the same time that the tiles help to maintain the cool temperature in the summer. When he made my third floor into a bathroom and master bedroom suite, he had to remedy the roof sag by bringing in two huge micro-laminated beams that now form the support for my entire roof. This was a massive undertaking, but he and his crew got them up a slide that they built from the front yard into the 3rd floor windows. The entire suite is retreat where love to wake up looking at light patterns on the walls, and listening to the birds sing in the backyard. If you are lucky enough to get Rob to turn his attentions to your project, I know that you will be exceptionally pleased with the results.
Description of Work: .This provider has done so much around my house that it's hard to list it all. He updated a previously remodeled kitchen, remodeled two bathrooms, remodeled an unfinished basement, added a porch, remodeled an unfinished 3rd floor, built a couch for the kitchen sitting area, created a fireplace surround in the basement, built radiator covers for my first floor radiators, and built an exterior entryway.
