When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. Work went well. The Handyman seemed concerned with my understanding of the project and approval at each step. That was fantastic! However at $250 for the first hour and $150 for subsequent hours, I can't afford to use the Handyman Can! for too many tasks.
Description of Work: A wall cabinet needed to be hung on the bathroom wall; needed to mud in two small holes in plaster.

Dear Customer, I know you wanted to accomplish another item on your list but this first item took longer therefore costing more. With lath and plaster walls (year built 1937), after locating a stud for one side of the cabinet, a second stud was not in an available location. I had to use a toggle bolt to securely install. The cabinet was too heavy to hold and fasten simultaneously, so I installed a small ledger board to hold the cabinet. I asked you if the ledger would be ok and made sure the length was short so as not to be visible per your request. I know the cabinet is secure and warranty my work. I can't say enough about Johnny Thomas and his skill as a master carpenter. He replaced the rotted posts on my front porch with skill, precision and excellent craftsmanship. This was the second project he has completed for our home and both projects he exceeded expectations with the finished product. You might pay a bit more but it is a great value when you see the work he does. He's a wonderful guy too. I highly recommend his services.

WOW!! I have looked for someone like Johnny to take care of those projects I'm not comfortable doing myself. I've found my "go to" Handyman. YES! My search is definitely over with Johnny's name and contact info the only name on my home project "help me" list. The first thing that impressed me with Johnny was his quick and timely contact after my inquiry. He was able to give me an estimate over the phone and a shopping list for supplies and materials. He offered to do the shopping but was quick to point out he has to charge for doing that shopping. We had a install date agreed on and the evening before he contacted me to confirm. He came to my house on time, ready to work. The roof vents were installed quickly and properly. I could have hired a handyman "hack" but I have the confidence and knowledge my vents were installed in accordance with proper techniques. Thank You, Johnny!!

Great. A lot more expensive than I was expecting however he was on time and efficient, pleasant to work with and fixed some extra things not on his to do list. Really seemed competent and professional. Worth the money because I think everything is done correctly.

Very happy with the work done. It took longer than initially quoted but we completely understood given with what he was working with. Great job installing our exterior shutters on our upper windows. We did the lower ones ourselves and it was money well spent to have the Handyman Can!!! do the others!

If the readers would click on the picture they will see your point: Garage roof made it difficult because a ladder could not be set...that shutter was in stalled while standing on the roof. Same for the shutters either side of the front entry roof. Really well. Johnny was great about communicating any delays. When we were able to set up a time, he was on time and txt me about his arrival time. His workmanship was excellent and the new post was installed perfectly. He cleaned up the work site so you wouldn't know anyone was there. I would definitely hire him again.

I called and Johnny immediately answered. I explained the repair job and told him I could send him a video of the loose door. He was very pleasant and knowledgable. I sent the video and the next day he responded with an estimate and explanation of the repair and about how long it would take. I made an appointment. I received a text the day before confirming and he arrived promptly the day of the appointment. Johnny wanted to make sure I was at the appointment to meet me so he made a point of coming early before I went to work. When I got home the door looked great! I was very happy with Johnny’s work and would be happy to call him again for further work. Thank you Johnny

The owner is knowledgable, methodical, courteous and professional. Took care to prepare a thorough estimate and asked detailed questions to assess the job up front. This likely saved both of us time. Took care to leave the job site neat and in order. Not cheap, but you're getting an experienced eye and quality work, so personally, I think the premium is worth it.

Johnny was great to work with. I initially messaged him through Angie's List and he called me back the same day, and it was even his birthday! My husband and I needed 2 items repaired in our home, which is currently on the market. The relocation company required a very specific, detailed estimate and Johnny was able to comply. He was out within a few days and fixed a window sill that had an over paint issue and a jammed garbage disposal. He even noticed that our front door handle wasn't working properly and tried to fix that, but it turns the internal mechanism was broken and we needed to order a new one. I highly recommend Johnny for any handyman work you need done. And if you get his voicemail, listen to the entire message!

I would like to add to the review posted on 3/16. My mom contacted John for an estimate and went back and forth with calls not being returned and when she did talk to him, he was arrogant and condescending. She asked if he provided free estimates and he responded with a very condescending tone that he didn't. John talked my mom into giving him a down payment of $275, which he said was part of the estimate (and in his written estimate which I reviewed, it stated within there "free estimates, no obligation" ) and that it would go towards work he did. An official/written estimate wasn't given until a later date. She received the estimate of $5,720 and emailed John and said she would not be able to have him do the work, because she wasn't planning on spending that much and if she could get her $275.00 back. It took him a while to respond back to her and then his was response was "No". She received another free-charge estimate for $1,500 for the same work. I reviewed the estimate further and he did say "free estimate, no obligation" and that the $275 would go towards any work performed. I emailed John and stated what was written in the estimate and he replied "I must of hit a wrong button when writing that estimate, you do have a point, give me a call" I thought, oh, maybe he will refund her. When I called John, he was very arrogant and condescending to me too and said he would not refund her and what did I think was fair. I said, she should be refunded, but for your time, what about $50 and he said, "that won't happen, I will give your mom $50. We went back and forth a bit and he ended up hanging up on me. I don't know how he is still in business, especially after reading some of his other reviews. Very poor, unprofessional businessman.

Dear [Member Name Removed] P, Daughter Of Customer [Member Name Removed] G., Your mom contacted me around the 1st of the year stating she was applying for a home improvement loan and that the appraisal company needed an estimate from a general contractor who was also EPA certified in Lead Paint Removal. I asked her to send me the report so I could properly address the appraisers issues thereby submitting an accurate estimate. Mom tried but could not send the report. I told Mom I charge $283.25 to prepare estimates for bank appraisals and would take that payment when an appointment for estimate was made. We made the appointment and mom gave me her credit card over the phone. I sent her a receipt of payment, confirmation of appointment and an assigned Estimate number. I met her son there who pointed out all the areas the appraiser wanted corrected. I spent some time with her son on Mom's computer trying to see the report and send it to my office, with no avail. I later called Mom and received the name and phone number of the appraiser, spoke to him, and became clear of his expected results: .Scrape any loose exterior paint including the addition on rear of home, deck and [Member Name Removed] fence adjacent to deck, replace rotted wood trim, siding and sheathing around garage overhead door, garage service door and garage window. .Remove and dispose all scrapings using EPA lead safe practices. .Prime and paint all bare wood. Apply 2 over coats. .Re-stain deck and deck fence surfaces. I prepared the estimate and sent it to Mom. Mom later asked me to provide a W9, A Copy Of My General Contractors License and a Copy Of My EPA Lead Safe Certification, which I did. Later mom emailed: "Sorry I will not be able to go with you for the work you gave a bid on... I cannot afford it and will probably not go through with the loan. Will I get any of the $ back..I know you were here for a half hour on January 7th, but I am hoping I get some of that back." I email replied: "Hello Beth, I have been away from the office. I am sorry my reply took so long. The short answer to your inquiry of getting back some of your payment is no. You are correct that I was at your home for 0.50 hours 11:50 AM .. 12:20 PM Sunday January 7th as noted in your Estimate 18-0002. The estimate also states additional time spent with Brian Gilbertson 10 minutes, your contact for loan origination, as well as 20 minutes to complete your estimate. You were not charged for time spent procuring and sending out the other documents you requested: Lead-safe certificate, W-9, General Contractors License Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. All my best in acquiring results to your satisfaction. Sincerely, John C. Thomas" Then I received an e-mail from [Member Name Removed] daughter: "Hi John my mom just informed me of the down payment she made to you and that you will not refund her? I was just looking through your estimate and noted a few things: Estimate is given free of charge no obligation. 1st Hour of Repairs and Maintenance $275.00 she didn't have any repairs done with you. Looks like there is an on-site estimate on Jan. 7 and according to your contract, that is free of charge, no obligation. The other lines below is a 10 minute phone call and you to prepare estimate?" That's when I took a closer look at the estimate and sure enough, it said all those things [Member Name Removed] pointed out. I emailed [Member Name Removed] back: " [Member Name Removed], "I erroneously clicked the button (computer key) that spells out exactly as you describe. You have a point. I am open to a conversation. Please call me. Cell 651 xxx xxxx Thank you." [Member Name Removed] called. I explained that my office clicked the wrong button (computer key). We have preset paragraphs. That was an error on my part to not have noticed the error of calling this a free estimate. You told me that your mom didn't have much money. So I asked [Member Name Removed] what she thought was fair and she said to charge mom $50.00. That rattled me. The first thing I did the next day was refund your mom's account $147.75 out of compassion that as you said she didn't have much money. I sent you an email stating what I refunded your mom. You replied: "Again, you did not provide any work to my mom, you came out and provided an estimate and talked to appraiser for 10 minutes and you are going to charge $275 for that service? Dear Customer, Firstly, I regret that you had a negative experience with my service. As a business owner, that concerns me. Thank you for bringing your displeasure to my attention. Yes, it took longer than I anticipated. I was able to save the aluminum trim on the exterior which was a concern to you. This took some additional time. The alternative would have been to destroy the aluminum and install new. This would have added more time and labor. It was 15 degrees F when I began your project and 'warmed' to 25 degrees mid-afternoon. I did take a 45 minute break to warm my feet and hands in my truck. After removing your original threshold, there was nothing supporting beneath it. This means your door was being held by the side jambs only. At the time I discovered this, I sent you pictures of the void beneath the threshold and explained that I would be going to get materials to fill the void, thus securing a base for your new door threshold. I also purchased some foot warmers so I would not have to take another break to warm up. When I went to install the door that you furnished, it was a 36" door, but a 32" was needed. I called to inform you and said I would punch off the clock while picking up the correct door, which I did as documented on the invoice. I felt that was the least I could do, given I assumed the door was correct and could have saved a trip had I measured it before getting threshold materials. You told me before hiring me that this is something you would normally do yourself, but needed it done ASAP. So, naturally you would have an amount of time in mind that the job should take. Johnny called to let me know he was going to be @ 15 minutes late due to road construction, and was here just as predicted. He completed all of the work in the timeframe that he had projected, and was able to repair the garbage disposal so I didn't have to replace it. His time estimates turned our right on target, as did his cost estimate. He was very professional and friendly, and he cleaned up and hauled things away. I found him to be extremely pleasant, and I would definitely hire him again, and recommend him to others. I would have done this review earlier, except that I was without internet service for a month.
Description of Work: New storm door installed (also removed and hauled away old one), blinds installed in bay window, garbage disposal fixed.

John was great. He returned my call right away and gave me an estimate over the phone. Then he sent an email with a detailed estimate. On the day of, he was kept me informed the entire time of what he was doing, how long it would take and how much it would cost. I'll definitely call him again.
Description of Work: I had a list of projects for John including replacing a ceiling fan, the seal at the bottom of 2 garage doors and under and over kitchen cabinet lights.

He did a great job. I am so happy with the results and feel so much more confident in selling my house. I feel comfortable in having him in my home, my dog in comfortable around him. He has a good personality and is so informative. There are things I like to do myself and have asked him questions on how to do them. He gives me the all the information I need in order to do things myself.
Description of Work: I had The Handyman Can!!! come back out to my house to do additional work. I was told by my real estate agent and stager that I should just buy a shell to cover up my shower in the basement but The Handyman Can!!! removed the old grout where necessary, regrouted and recaulked. My shower in the basement looks wonderful now. I went down to look at it like six times that day, just to admire it! It is very pretty now. I also asked him to look at my toilet in the basement to figure out what was leaking on it. He determined it was the water line going from the tank to the shut off. He replaced that, put acetone on the wood wall and baseboard, told me exactly what to buy (as I wanted to paint it myself), the type of primer, type of brushes, etc. He also caulked and cleaned up everyplace necessary in that area.

Things went very well. He was very conscientious about the time, as he charges by the hour. He was always working, took only a very tiny break. He consulted me when necessary about deviations (such as the polarity problem). When installing the fill valve on my toilet, he noticed that there was not a water shut off (the toilet is very old). He had the parts to install the shut off and consulted me about the price of the parts to do so before taking care of it and asking if I wanted that done. Seems CRAZY now that I have the shut off, how I did without it! I will ask him to relook at the refill valve for adjustment when he comes out this Friday, I have requested him to do additional work on my shower stall. I wish I would have known about him a long time ago as he is EXCELLENT at what he does and me and my dog are comfortable with having him in my home.
Description of Work: He tore down my shed and hauled it away, cleaned the gutters and cleared the downspouts, fixed the pull chains on my bathroom light fixtures (I love the fixtures and did not want to replace them), replaced my motion detector light on my garage (he found that the polarity was reversed and so fixed it). He installed a toilet refill valve. He noticed that I have an old upright piano that I plan to learn to play and I requested he please play me a song. He promised he would when he was done with all of the work. He did and it was WONDERFUL! I've never heard my piano played so beautifully!

Thanks for the piano note....I am a professional musician, now playing as a hobby. If I may share a story: My mom was sent to America at age 17 to get her citizenship so her mom & siblings could also come to America. She spoke no English, missed her boy friend and was home-sick. Mom was gifted a piano by her guardians as a way to pass time and be happy. I lifted the cover to the piano keys, dropped it on my fingers and ran away crying. My next try came after a kindergarten class where we learned the song "Red River Valley". I lifted the lid successfully and plunked out the song with 1 finger. I play be ear to this day. I have performed dueling pianos at The Mall Of America and Chanhassen Dinner Theater "Club Chan". My mom had the music genes. So I tell folks to have any musical instrument in your home and if a child has the gift of genetic-gene for music, they will gravitate to it...perhaps a gentle intro. Sincerely, Johnny John C. Upon taking apart the old column, I discovered that the previous install utilized and iron pipe over the standard-sized metal column used for yard-coach lights. The iron pipe was cemented into the ground and therefore was part of the final assembly. That required finding an adaptive collar to mate the over-sized iron pipe with the new carriage light.
