When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. I needed a new sump pump installed and the drain line rerun for the pump. I called and left a message, within a couple hours John called me back and I explained what I needed. He was able to schedule an appointment for the next morning at 7:00. His tech, Mike, arrived right on time. Mike really knew his stuff and some of the changes he made should, I hope, help me to avoid having to replace the pump again anytime soon. I am very pleased with the quality of the work and with the responsiveness of John and Mike. If I need help with this kind of stuff again I will defiantly call.
Description of Work: Replaced a sump pump and reran the drain line.

They did an excellent job with a free estimate and a couple of recommendations. He was much cheaper than a previous quote who didn't want to investigate the problem but just do a major overhaul. Eric took time to see what the issues were and come up with a great solution. We emptied the garage out to save time and money and eric was particular on sealing and repairing the leaks. He went out of his way to look for "maybe" areas as well. He used different products for different areas, worked fast, thoroughly, and was good at communicating with me. He also left the place extremely clean. I would hire him again. John, the owne,r was friendly, responsive, did quick follow up, and set a schedule that was good for me. This is the second time I have used them and I referred them to my sister as well.

John and his assistant showed up at our new house on time. They were able to help me assess the situation, had the tools to do the job, were friendly, efficient and effective.
Description of Work: John Thomas and his worker sanded a closet floor, preparing it for varnishing. I had hired them to rip out old carpet in a bedroom of our new house. But there were not good floors underneath as I had thought. So I decided to have them sand the closet floor in another room instead.

We hired Handyman Can to work on our bathroom August 27, 2013. We had a leak from the shutoff valve for the toilet, that had caused damage to the floor & sub floor, that definitely needed to be addressed. Johnny came to look things over & give an estimate. My husband had asked him if we needed to replace the entire sub floor, because of the damage, & Johnny said no, it wouldn't be necessary. We purchased the sheet of Vinyl flooring, the toilet & the base trim that we wanted. Things seemed to go well at first. We weren't use to paying by the terms he outlined in the proposal. He wanted a portion to be paid in order to be put on the schedule, then another portion the day the work begins. The final balance due upon satisfaction & job completion. We've never had a contractor with terms like this, but we went with the flow. A sub contractor, Eric, came Sept. 9 to start on the remodeling. He was professional & very courteous. His job was to tear up the old flooring & baseboard, replace the sub floor, install the under layment, replace the toilet, replace shutoff valve for toilet, install the new vinyl & baseboard, remove & re install the vanity & sink. Because of the floor having water damage behind the toilet & the floor being uneven in places, his part of the job took longer than what he thought. He also said the sub floor should have been completely replaced because it would have been completely level. He had to install another board under the sub floor to "beef up" the floor. Because of the "beef up", it affected an area of the vinyl flooring causing it to "puff up" for lack of a better term. It is still that way. What I found out later that day was Johnny had run the credit card we used for the first payment, for the second payment being that it was the first day work began. I thought he would call me to ask if I wanted the second payment on that credit card, but he didn't call to ask. He just ran it. The way I found out was that I checked my email & saw there was a receipt from Handyman Can for the second payment, paid by my credit card, with his initials on the receipt. Since he is not an authorized user of my credit card, I have no idea how the credit card company accepted it. Now this did not set too well with me. Back to Eric & the bathroom....Eric had a heck of a time getting the shutoff valve off. He called Johnny. When Johnny arrived, he couldn't get it off either. Then Johnny told me that they're going to have to take down my wall to get at it!! My wall consists of 4 1/4"X4 1/4" tiles which I couldn't find in the stores. I wanted to cry! Eric said they don't have to do that...Eric removed only 4 tiles & was able to do what he needed to do. Another sub contractor, Shaun, came to do the plumbing. Replaced shower head, tub faucet, & overflow. He was very professional & courteous. Great customer service skills. The last sub contractor was Pat. He resurfaced our bathtub & did a beautiful job! He totally cleaned up after himself. He also had great customer service skills, courteous & professional. My husband was not happy with the flooring in our bathroom. When Johnny called after Pat was done, I told him. long story short, he said he'd come by & look at it. That was suppose to be yesterday morning, Sept. 19, at 10am. I also told him that we wanted lien waivers from the sub contractors & Johnny. A few minutes after 10am on the 19th, he called me saying he couldn't make it because a job was short on materials & had to go there. He then said he'd like to meet with my husband the evening of the 19th, so that he can see the floor area we're talking about. He also didn't see any reason for lien waivers & said I should have told him that in the beginning. We never had to tell past contractors that & they never had a problem with them giving us lien waivers. I told him we're asking for them to cover our butts. This is not something new. I had to go to my husbands place of employment for something.When I was backing out to go home, I called Johnny about him coming over in the evening. He told me I was being unreasonable asking for lien waivers & that he felt my husband would be more reasonable. Now this is the second time he's insulted me since I've hired him. I told him I was at my husbands job. I pulled back in my space, got out of my car & went to the area my husband works in, gave him the phone. They talked, my husband said he wanted lien waivers, Johnny didn't want to give lien waivers, Johnny told my husband he'll eat the final payment, then hung up. When I got home I emailed Johnny. Emails went back & forth. I told him we aren't the type of people who will say fine, we'll keep the final payment. We pay our bills. Johnny came over last night, the 19th, with lien waivers. We paid him the final payment.As far as the vinyl flooring, he didn't offer to knock any money off. He saw the "puffy areas" that my husband was talking about. My husband is upset because of the way the vinyl is dipped in some areas, ok in another, & wrong in another. My husband also saw that the sink in the vanity is still leaking. He put a small bowl in the vanity to catch the water. That never leaked before they re installed the vanity & sink after doing the flooring. Allow me to explain the reason why we graded as we did. We gave a C for overall because of the sub contractors. We gave a D for quality because of the flooring & leak. Responsiveness was B because the subs were here when they said they'd be here. Professionalism we gave a D because of Johnny's attitude toward me & not acting as a contractor should IMO.
Description of Work: Replace bathroom flooring, part of sub floor, resurface bathtub, replace shower head, tub faucet, overflow, replace toilet. & shutoff valve.

Dear Customer, I recall the first day on the job you noticed a change in the contract wording and asked me about it. I responded "are you kidding me"? I up set you, then tried to apologize and obviously did a lousy job of that. I learned from you. That some customers are more discerning than others. You have every right to be. From looking at my subcontractors van logo's and googling them as well as insisting lien waivers and knowing the difference from one lien waiver to another. I contacted them for help with general house repairs. The person who took the message was professional, asked for many details and repeated back everything I said. Indicated I'd be called "ASAP". When I didn't hear anything after several days, I called again, went through the same questions. With the same results: no call back.

We are very impressed with the service from this company and the work that Johnny , the owner, has provided for us. I contacted him through the company website and received a phone call shortly thereafter to set-up a time the have the proposed work inspected. He arrived the next day, assessed the situation, explained the pricing, we agreed and he got right to work. Within an hour, the side door awning was firmly reattached to the house. Had three windows in need of repair. Brick molding rotting. Otherwise windows in acceptable condition. Was given estimate on replacement versus repair. Opted to go with repair. Brick molding removed and new brick molding replaced (painted at no additional charge). Also, sills (rotting) removed and replaced. Windows look and operate great. While repairing windows found siding section on roof that was rotting due to moisture and replaced at nominal charge. Bathroom work looks and works great. Also thought price was "spot on".

The handyman arrived on time, did a great job installing the toilet, and cleaned up after himself. I also had him look at another issue we had with an outdoor faucet, and he was very patient explaining what would need to be done, if/when I decide to do it.

I am not happy -- $225.00 for 1 hours work, plus I pay for Menard's chemicals. I wanted the shower chaulked, but only got a very expensive wash job which I do monthly myself

My technician said you were happy when he left. I did leave you a message to call me. Please do. I have spoken to my tech. He says the tile required mold and mildew removal. He used 3 products: 1st Tile Lab, 2nd Johnson & Johnson Pro Strength Tile & Grout Cleaner, a bleach based product, 3rd Mold Armour Mildew & Stain remover. It turned out I was able to fix the issues by myself, and Johnny was very understanding about this (even though he had already lined someone up to help me on last minute notice). Notably, of the several handymen I contacted he was one of only two who returned my call promptly. I recommend contacting him if you have need of repairs.
Description of Work: Johnny spoke with me on the phone about a couple of minor home repair issues. He gave me an estimate, and also called around to line someone up to do the job.

Handyman arrived on time, quoted a price, and we agreed to the work. Showed up on time and completed all work as requested. He did a good job, but was a bit gruff and grumpy. Price seemed fair. I'd probably go with him again for similar small jobs.
Description of Work: Installed a kitchen sink and replaced the runners on all of our kitchen draws. Fixed a rotted mailbox base and a door that didn't close properly.

Exceedingly hard for myself to get to, but easy enough for someone who knows how to do it correctly. Johnny was super fast in identifying what needed to be done and got us on his schedule. To help speed things up,he even came over on a weekend day before the job was to be done and looked the job over to determine what supplies would be needed. Figured that the best thing to use that would last the longest with the very least amount of maintenance would be hardy board, which looks great installed.
Description of Work: Replacement of trim around cap of chimney.

We were not told we had to apply a caulking softener prior to the technician's arrival. The man that arrived was not the person I'd spoken with on the phone, and there was some drama about his long drive to our townhome when the caulking wasn't ready. I had explained the issue thoroughly to the person on the phone. The technician worked very hard for the first hour (of two we had paid for), then asked my husband "what do you think?" but none of the caulking had been removed still. (only scrubbed) We then asked him to remove the caulking, and he got most all of it done the last hour! I would try this company again, because they were willing to do additional future things to help complete the job and go the extra mile.
Description of Work: Help scrape out black/moldy caulking around tub/shower area.

Dear Customer, I apologize for the missed communication between myself and Mike. I appreciate that you gave us a 6 A rating and would use us again. This was an Angie's List "Big Deal" Special, 3 hours of re-caulking, re-grouting for $99. We want to get the most done in 3 hours as possible so Mike calls you ahead the day before the appointment and has a conversation to determine what's going on. This was back in March, so I am recreating as a generality here: It can be a 2 step process requiring 2 trips and I'm not sure from memory if that was the case here. If your tile has a surface substance (calcium, mold, etc), that has to be cleaned and allowed to dry before regrouting or re-caulking, otherwise, the grout or caulk will not stick. Re-gouting is only necessary if fissures are present in the existing grout, allowing for grout penetration and adherence. Thank you for acknowledging that we are willing to "go the extra mile". The job was done very well. It looks like the bathroom was never taken apart. The new tile looks flawless. You can't even tell where the new tile begins and the old tile ends. I had the old walls put back up and you can't even tell that the wall was completely off at one point. Eric was here when he said he would be here. Very hard working. The job was done when he said it would be done. He goes the extra mile to make the customer happy. John Thomas the owner of The Handyman Can and Eric both are very hands on, great customer service, great communication between company and customer, and very willing to work with the customer too make you happy. Would definitely recommend to future clients!! P.S. I have an old house with no air conditioning. The house gets very very hot during the summer. Eric worked without complaining and still got the job done. Very professional! Very good work ethic! Very good job! Thank You!
