When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. It was great working with them and the repair has held through all the snow and cold we have had this winter. In addition to stopping the leak, they fixed the window directly above that was contributing to the leakage issue, replaced the mudroom floor that had rotted under the tile, laid the new tile I purchased, redid the concrete underpinning the deck that was crumbling, and put on a new door frame, door and screen door. I have been very pleased.
Description of Work: Fixed the construction of an old mud room someone had added on over 10 years ago where it was leaking rain into the house.

Called Handy Man Can to fix items on a Truth in Housing list before putting a house property on the market. The work had to be done with owner (me) in another state, so John did a good job of communicating between myself, his repair person, and the inspector who wrote the report. However, in the end, a lot of money was charged for what I felt was pretty minor work. John and I discussed and he explained what exactly was done and the hours required, so I paid the bill. But I do wish I had been there to do most of this myself.
Description of Work: Repair wood step tread on basement stairs; add back flow valve to shower head; replace 1 GFE outlet; ground two additional outlets; put three metal screws in hot water heater exhaust pipe.

I especially thank you for asking me what we were going to fix before the job started and after I had a chance to look over the inspection report. Upon speaking with the author of the report and the city that hired him to author it, I was clear that the report was for filing purposes only. Any repairs were elective on your part, with foresight that the buyers may require repairs as well. While the craftsman was @ your job site, questions arose as to which was the outlet in question, the report said "the north wall" and the home was situated at an angle. Mike asked me to "Google Maps" the home to find North. We actually found 3 outlets that did not pass code. At that point, I called you and you decided to repair all 3. So some time was spent troubleshooting and conversing. I hope this helps. I will give you a call to discuss further. It is our intention to "Be Of Service" to our customers. They were clear on pricing and were diligent about keeping track of the time worked. We were really happy with the service and would use them again for other house projects.
Description of Work: We called the Handyman Can to replace the dryer vent cap on the outside of our house when the plastic louvers on the old one snapped off. Johnny was very prompt in getting back to me on scheduling, and his colleague Bill came out to do the work. Bill replaced the old vent cap with a new, sturdier metal one and cleaned out the length of the dryer vent.

Excellent service! Will definitely call again when needed :)
Description of Work: Fixed closet doors, replaced hinge and other parts to make them close better. Repaired split wood on pocket door. Aligned deadbolt on garage door in order for it to lock properly. Fixed leaky kitchen faucet. He had to go to two stores to get the correct hinge for the closet door.

It went fine, he was very professsional, he did fine job, I was very pleased with it. The site said they offer a 10% Angie's List discount, but because I live outside of the Twin Cities beltway they didn't honor that discount.

I had emailed them the day before asking if this was a service they would perform. The ceiling fan is up about 14 feet and we can't get to it ourselves. The owner called me within a couple of hours and was able to set up an appointment for the next day. Bill came out and was actually early. Not only did he change the bulbs, but he also cleaned the fan and tightened up all the screws. He was extremely professional as well as friendly. We would use this company any time.

From the first call, Johnny and his crew were professional, on time and communicated well. The job was a larger job than it really sounds as I described it and required flexibility from the crew. They were great, giving me options, keeping me informed of price changes and providing opinions where it made sense. They did a great job on clean up, there was no debris or tools left on site. The second time they were at my home they did some caulking in a shower that was being problematic. I had already tried caulking it twice and I wasn't having any luck. A different guy was here on time and gave me feedback as to what I would need to do in the near future to keep from having water problems. He was quick and cost effective. Punctual and courteous always! I will continue to use this service as they really have great people and great service!
Description of Work: Outside canopy and trellis removed from home and siding replaced. Flagstone patio filled and sealed. Tree removed and new tree put in. Large project in the summer. This winter, they caulked a shower and reviewed a damaged area in the shower that they will come back to fix.

Bill the handyman arrived about a half hour late due to traffic. He got right to work and completed the tasks at hand, explaining the work to be done and how time and materials would be charged. He had to go to a home supply store to get a fan and when it didn't fit he went back and got a replacement off the clock. He was very personable and helpful with a few other tasks I hadn't thought of getting help with like rehanging a cupboard door in the basement. He even gave me a little advice on an IKEA chest of drawers I was trying to finish up while he was there. I was very satisfied with the work but the price was more than I anticipated initially.
Description of Work: Drywall patch of 1.5' hole in bathroom ceiling. Replaced bath fan.

We recently moved to a new state and sold our home of 20 years that we had extensively remodeled. We had a list of repairs that we had meant to get to over the years but never found the time to finish. After years of the frustrations of dealing with contractors for remodeling, installation/repair of major appliances, plumbers, electricians, drywall people and painters, we were expecting the same low quality of customer service, incompetence, poor workmanship, apathy, you name it. I called The Handyman Can after researching recommendations on Angie's List and hired them right away based on the reviews. We were never so happy to have a contract company in our house as this one. The Handyman Can was just the opposite of every experience we've had. Mike was our provider, and we have never met someone like Mike who could do anything to fix anything the right way and was incredibly professional, prepared with all of the tools he needed for the list of things I had sent him (and more), flexible, hard working, and concientious. He knew exactly what to do and how to do everything from electrical to plumbing, tile work to carpentry. Mike was more than happy to go get supplies that we had not had time to get beforehand: he checked with us regarding the fastest route to the nearest hardware store and got there and back very quickly. He had a lot of patience with the flock of kids who were in and out of the house. Most important, he fixed everything perfectly and explained what he was doing and why. Because we know a lot about building and home repair, we know that he is an expert. I had to reschedule our first appointment with The Handyman Can at the last minute, and Johnny was very good about this. We had them come back two more times as we found more things that needed to be done. In the past, we would have tried to do them ourselves, but knowing that we could rely on The Handyman Can to get them done quickly and perfectly, it was a no-brainer to hire them again and again. If you need absolutely anything done, hire these people. They are skilled in "basement to roof" building and repair. My only regret: that they don't live near our new home. If Angie's List had been around when we first started remodeling, we would have saved thousands of dollars and days/months of frustration and worry. Thank you, Angie's List, and thank you again, Mike and Johnny at The Handyman Can.
Description of Work: Mike was our provider. He did the following: fixed outlets that had never been properly installed by our remodeling contractor, fixed door handles on doors that came from the manufacturer with poor quality (including Anderson, Inc.) or were improperly installed by our remodeling contractor, tile replacement and grout repair, modification of three inside doors that never fit properly in their frames (again, our old remodeling contractor's carpentry work), repair of three bifold doors that had been broken over the years, installation of new handles on bathroom vanity doors/drawers, replacement of broken slide rails for drawers, installation of smoke alarms, replacement of three new light fixtures, plumbing, and new caulking around sinks and tubs/showers.

Jon was fantastic! He came by to check on the project in person almost immediately. While there talked us through everything that would need to happen and told us some easy fixes on some other small issues we were having with our new house. The day he came out to do the project went very smoothly. It took a bit longer than he expected, but in the end the window looked exactly as it had before. He did a great job and was extremely nice. I would recommend him in a flash.

A strip of shingles had blown off my roof and I needed it replaced quickly as the forecast was for rain and snow later in the week. Johnny went out of his way to adjust his schedule so he could come out the same day. He had the shingles replaced within half an hour even though he had to access a steep pitched gable on the second story. When I first called, Johnny estimated the time it would take to do the job and then asked me to think of other small jobs he could perform so that he could provide a full hour of service for his one hour minimum charge. After repairing the roof he not only caulked a leaky gutter but also planed down my porch door to keep it from sticking after he had installed the storm window on the door. He then primed the edges to seal them for the winter. All this in an hour and a half! Johnny was very personable and I appreciate that he was able to fit me in the same day. I would definitely use this service again!

Mat was the person I first spoke with when I called in to see about an appointment and he was also the tech that came out and worked on our project. We had some siding that was damaged due to our grill being too close to our house and warping the siding. We had one complete piece of siding stashed away in our garage and Mat was able to cut it down into several sections to replace the damaged siding. By the time he left the siding looked exactly like it should. After Mat fixed our siding issue he took the time to come inside and take a look at another project that we are thinking about having fixed as well, he was very polite & professional.

The windows are unusual. It wasnt until after the work was complete that we fully realized the window functionality (they drop down into the wall). Once we determined the full functionality, a little re-work was required by Mr. Thomas. Without complaint, and without additional charge, he came right out and made the necessary changes. On Mr. Thomas's initial visit, my spouse (being new to radiator heating) broke a radiator; water was everywhere. Mr. Thomas helped my spouse to stop the water and find suitable assistance. Again, Mr. Thomas did this at no charge. We are very happy with the work provided by the Handiman Can. We will definitely use his services in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced the exterior window sill which runs beneath 7 windows on my porch.

Everything went great. Mike and Matt did a great job on all of their work, were very hardworking and I was very comfortable having them work in our house. They were friendly (including with our kids who got in their way on occasion) and seemed like genuinely good people. Furthermore, I was trying to keep costs down on the long list of projects I had, and they were willing to (for example) hang a lighting fixture on a 19' ceiling, then let me do the finishing work so that I could keep their hours down. They let me pitch in on some of the projects to cut down on hours and were helpful on some other projects I had going on (I was patching walls and doing some painting while they worked - they gave me pointers on how to do a better job). I would absolutely recommend them to friends or family, or anyone else for that matter.

When I first called John and told him what we wanted done he offered to come out that very evening and take a look to get the process going. He coordinated with an electrician by phone while he was there to try and determine the least invasive conduit run for the ice dam wire. He gave me options of more and less expensive options for all the work we wanted done, and I appreciated that. We talked again the next day after he had sent the estimate which I thought was reasonable. He said he would start on a Tuesday. Monday afternoon I got a call from someone I'd never talked to and they explained that they couldn't come on Tuesday, it would have to be Wednesday and would that be ok. I said that would be fine, and reiterated, so that means nothing will be done on Tuesday, I won't have anyone at my house until Wednesday, correct? He stated that was correct. Tuesday morning comes and they show up. Thankfully my husband was just headed out the door. Apparently the drywall guy couldn't make it until Wednesday. Mostly just some communication confusion. They completed their work quickly. We have not had a chance to use the ice dam wire, but the placement of the conduit and the junction box is very nice. They sealed the cracked vent we had identified and explained they found another one while they were up there and sealed that too. The damaged portion of ceiling they patched took two days (it had to dry). We explained we did not want the texture put back on as we were going to scrape the rest of the ceiling so it needed to be paint ready. It's not. It's cratered and you can still see the seam. We mentioned this to John but explained it wasn't worth anyone's time to come back out and fix it. It was a small enough job it should've been done right the first time. The attic access in the garage I was very excited about. After they installed it they offered to cut up some plywood and place it up there so we could actually use it for storage. This was great, it was for an extra charge we agreed upon. The thing I was disappointed in is that the hole they cut around the door is just cut drywall. I had a picture in my head of a trimmed out door, but it was never really specified either way. I feel that John should've talked about the fact that it wouldn't be trimmed, or that trimming would cost more but he never brought it up. All in all I thought they tried hard to do good work, but it was a little rough going with the multiple subcontractors. I also think the scope of work could've been a little tighter and I relied on John to do that but he didn't. I'm not unhappy about the electrical work, just not very impressed with the drywall work.
Description of Work: Sealed cracked vents on roof, added hardwired wire on roof to prevent ice dams, patched damage portion of ceiling, and added a ladder access to our garage attic storage space.

The process was very good. I left a message with the answering service and got a very prompt call back. They were able to schedule quickly and schedule an appointment at my availability and very soon. They do take a one hour deposit over the phone via credit card, there is a minimum charge for the first hour of $180 for anyone who finds them on Angie's List. Additional hours are prorated and are at a $90 hourly fee. It did feel a little high to me, but I can really see how the overhead of doing really small jobs and driving all over the place for them can be a real issue. Mike arrived promptly for our appointment, he had already gotten parts so he was able to get going right away. The work he did was great and the step is better than it was before the tread broke in the first place. It was about 1.5 hours total, which included the time he went shopping before he arrived, and the parts were charged at actual cost, no markup. I would definitely call them again for little jobs that are more than I can do.

John, the company owner, called back within hours of my initial email contact, inquired about the job, reviewed his pricing schedule with me, and we scheduled an appointment for the next day. Mike called the next morning to confirm when he would be there, and both John and Mike arrived on time. They inspected the job together and then Mike completed it. The next day John called back to verify if I was happy with the work.
Description of Work: Repair/tack down loose shingles on the roof. Install heating wire over the roof to prevent ice dams during the winter.

I needed to have repairs made to my garbage disposal. I called and left a message with the answering service that this provider uses. The answering service was very professional and courteous, but after a couple of days I had heard nothing so I called and left another message. Still nothing. Days passed. I found another provider who was more responsive. This was in early September. On October 3 I did receive an email apologizing for the lengthy delay in getting back to me and explaining that "we've experienced an enormous influx of new business for which we did not have trained personnel to handle. This has now been resolved." I can understand that sometimes things happen where a contractor can't fit in a job. I would have been fine with a call back advising that they couldn't fit me in for a month so that I could make other arrangements. Not calling back is not OK.
