When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. I was SO impressed....from the quick response to my inquiry on Angie's List, the email reminders, the ability to set up an appointment that works for my schedule, to the completion of the project. Johnny was so personable when he came out to review the jobs that I needed completed. He was able to give me an estimate on the spot & schedule a time to start the job. I felt so comfortable & safe enough to go forward with the job. 2 weeks later, after an email & phone call reminder (thanks!), Bill came out & was right on time (if not early!). What a great guy! He was so personable & helpful...even showing me how easy it was to grout should this happen to me again. My faucet install was a little bit tricky due to odd sized pipes. He had to run out to the hardware store but never was upset (even when the pipe started to spray water...totally not his fault!) He was even so sweet to my dog...that definately deserves an A+ rating right there! He cleaned up after the job even offering to take away the big box that my shower door came in...thanks! The estimate was right on and everything went just great! I can't wait to hire them again for more jobs around this place....painting next?? Do not hesitate to hire this company...they do a great job! I just can't say enough great things! Thanks so much!
Description of Work: We desperately needed some jobs done that we had put off for years: repair the grout on kitchen floor, hang a glass shelf, install new kitchen faucet & install new glass shower doors.

There was great communication throughout the entire process, called night before & again the morning of our appointment to update on arrival time. After the project was completed I received another follow up call from Sara & John to get my feedback on how I thought everything went and was encouraged to share any questions or concerns that I may have had. What first caught my eye on Angie's List, was the personal background John Thomas offered in his "Handyman Can Inc" information. I had hoped it would be an omen for high quality customer service delivered with a personal touch. I was not disappointed with my expectations as everyone we worked with in the process was very professional. Bill and Ricky went out of their way to make sure that the job was done right, even though it required them to go far beyond the original work order. This also meant driving to get supplies for the additional problems they encountered. Despite all obstacles, they finished the same day. A quality job.
Description of Work: I contacted John to give me an estimate on the installation of both a new storm door and screen door connecting our four season porch to the deck. In his prompt return call, he was extremely careful to ask detailed questions about not only the brands & features of each door, but also other specifics that may effect the estimate. I was impressed from John's initial call as his emphasis was on doing the job exactly as I wanted and not just how quickly he could acquire a new customer. While the original plan/estimate was to hang just the doors, that changed when the guys removed the old door frame and discovered disintegrating wood where it had been due to water damage. Rather than ignore this as not their problem, they continued to inspect the subfloor and found some of the carpet and pad near the door in the four season porch had also been damaged. So they cut out the moldy pad & replaced it. To keep the problem from happening again they added vinyl fascia to the deck.

John was very professional and even climbed into the attic to look for problems with the roof. I really appreciated his willingness to discuss work that will be needed in the future and give us estimates for 3 different projects so we could get needed work done now and plan for future work. The person who completed the repairs (caulking several spots on the roof and around all roof vents) was also helpful.
Description of Work: John came to the house and gave us an estimate on repairs to roof where it was leaking but also evaluated the whole roof and wrote up a total of 3 estimates so future work could be done in stages.

The original bid was for $2,100 to complete the stated work; not an hourly bid. However, the work duration was greater than planned. The problem in part was the bid was performed over the phone vs. on-site, and the work scope increased at my request. The end cost was $4,200. The was contracted out and the contractors were very responsive, polite and worked long hours to complete the job. However, the work duration was protracted and the quality of work was not as expected in some areas. The drywall work / ceiling work was great. The custom cabinet, wood trim and painting work wasn't quality. John, the Handyman Can owner, came to my house to review the work, assist with completing the work and negotiate the increased cost. John was also pleasant but the end result of the quality of work for the cost was disappoint. The quick response to get someone to the house to do the work and politeness was a positive.
Description of Work: Installed 6 panel doors with trim, installed door hardware, performed dry wall repair to include ceiling, made a custom bathroom cabinet and painted & stained woodwork.

I regret that I did not send my guy(s) back to finish the details to your satisfaction. During the initial call with our office, the first appointment time to come out & look @ your project was past the date you wanted the work completed, so we offered you our hourly rate. You indicated uncertainty on how to finish the doors (paint, stain etc). I assured you our craftsman would give you options upon seeing the project. They did and you liked their approach, painting vs staining. Painting takes longer and I didn't realize there were French doors, with 20 panes of glass x 2 sides = 40. I regret your experience with us was not 100% satisfactory. Our goal is to provide you with an extraordinary customer service experience. We did not and for that I apologize. Sincerely John C. Mike showed up right at the time advertised. I appreciated his expertise and he did a great job. Communication was very good as well. Received a call shortly after the initial call. Received call back afterwards as well to check how things went. I would definitely recommend, and will use The Handyman Can for any future projects.

They came in, looked at the grout, and it turned out that it all had to come out. It was a fine decision, and they installed an insert for us and redid the drywall and the plumbing. They did a good job and we have nothing but good things to say about it. The plumber who came out was very personable, friendly, and responsive. They picked up the supplies and cleaned up after themselves beautifully.
Description of Work: We bought a Big Deal from them for 3 hours of kitchen and bathroom caulking and grout restoration.

One of the more odd encounters with a contractor. I called early last week & left all my contact info & brief description of problem (roof leak....water in upstairs bedroom). I called again the next day as had forgotten to leave my cell #. It felt like they had no record of the 1st call as had to leave all contact info again (3 phone #s plus email). Later in week I got home in evening to find a voicemail from a woman at Handyman Can who said please call us back. I called back next morning & receptionist had no idea why I was called and asked for all my contact info again. I gave it but then said that if I didn't hear back from them that day I would assume they didn't want the business. That evening John Thomas called & left message on my cell as well as a text message. He said that they wouldn't be able to schedule an appt until Monday when scheduler returned. Okay. Next day John Thomas called & texted again asking me to call him. I did. He asked if I was the person with attic/water leak issues that he had spoken to earlier. Apparently they had a lot of calls & some miscommunication & confusion there. Sunday evening John Thomas calls & leaves a message that he is able to schedule appt right now. I call back & we get appt set up. He later calls & texts back that would like to move appt to earlier in day and that the person he wants to send doesn't have ladders. We talk and he agrees that they do need to bring ladders as those I have won't work. He asks if I have heard of docuSign. I had not. He wants to send someone out on Wed but wants me to sign a document (with my credit card info) in advance. I told him I wasn't comfortable signing anything until I heard what they thought the problem was. He said they wouldn't run my card until after the work was completed. I asked if his company didn't provide free estimates first. He said that they intended to find the problem and fix it on same day. (I'm fine with that but I want to be able to say yes or no to the suggested repair). John Thomas asked that I trust him and his reputation on Angi's List. I said I wasn't going to sign prior to hearing what they had to say. He then said that maybe he'd come out to the house himself but said that he'd have to charge me an additional $90 as they would be making two trips. So upshot is they do charge $90 for evaluating problem & providing estimate. I've not encountered any other contractor/repair person on Angi's List that charges to come out and look over a problem and give an estimate of repair costs. I've never had a repair person ask me to give them my credit card info before they even look at a problem or who didn't give me the opportunity to agree to a repair before proceeding. I felt pressured. I did not hire Handyman Can as I don't believe this is a good practice and I don't "just trust" his reviews on Angi's List. A few minutes later John Thomas sent another text apologizing saying that of course he would make two trips. I am not hiring this contractor as I don't feel good about his practices.

Thank you for bringing that annoyance to our attention. We take deposits to assure the job is there for our craftsmen, and use Docusign to make sure all agreements are clear and documented. During our initial phone conversation, you told me others had come to look at your leaky roof situation but refused to look in the attic, telling you it was unnecessary. I said our craftsman would look in your attic as there may be evidence of wetness on wood and clues if the wetness was there and dried. Clues that could tell us the point(s) of water infiltration. Though I don’t usually work Sunday, I called you given the rain we were having. I wanted to address your leaky roof problem sooner. I was offering to skip the step of scheduling an estimate in order to address your leaky roof problem sooner. I offered to have a craftsman come out, assess the situation and give an on-site estimate. If you liked the estimate, he would perform the repairs at the same time. Two workman provided the labor and materials Had a late start due to weather but finished the job by 9:30 that evening. Very good work and the site was cleaned up. Would recommend this firm again.

I contacted Handyman using online request for estimate. Within a day I received a phone call to discuss the project. Date and rate was set up. The work was done exactly as I wanted. No mess and no problems. I would use this company again and recommend them to others looking for someone who will take on a smaller project. First rate.
Description of Work: 3 overgrown raised bed gardens were removed. The wood frames and corner posts were removed and hauled away. Soil was moved to a location at the back of the property. The area was leveled.

John responded to our request very promptly and provided us a very professional estimate for the work scope we requested. Due to a medical situation, we decided to postpone the project, but we will very definitely consider John's company for this job when we are ready to proceed.

It turned out I did not use him because after I explained the electronic faucet I had and the trouble I had with it, he said he didnt have the right guy at the time to do the work. I REALLY respect that! I dont want someone coming in who does not have all of the qualifications. He may have someone now. But he referred me to someone who turned out to be a great plumber for the type of faucet I have. He could have told media guy could do it, but he didn't. That is professional and proper. After all of our discussions he sent me a thank you note--promptly. His business is going to do well because he cared about getting my work done right. We will definitely use him in the future.
Description of Work: After talking to a few people to do a plumbing job, I felt his service was a good choice. He was extremely professional and prompt at returning calls.

Was looking for a few small things done around the house and a deck on a new built house. Email back and forth was really good. May 28 got a friendly call from someone promising me with a estimate for the deck BY June 4. Still no call or email. Already have signed a contract with a different builder yesterday. Very disappointed. Professionalism is getting a D because of how friendly the emails and calls were.

He arrived when he said he would, reviewed the scope of the project, and gave me a cost estimate which he stuck to. He then returned very quickly with the materials he needed and removed the rotted 6" X6" timbers. Then he installed the new timbers. He understood that I was in a time crunch and delivered quality work in an accelerated time frame. I would definitely use John Thomas and Handyman Can again. He may be the President of this franchise, but he went way above and beyond on my job hanging in there until the job was done to my satisfaction at 10 P. M.
Description of Work: Repaired large planter. I'm selling my house and needed immediate repair prior to showing my house to potential buyers. He stayed with the project until 10 P.M. when it was completed. He was working by multiple lanterns at the end.

Regarding 'putting a $ cap on the projects', please know when we quote hourly jobs, we invite you to work from your list of projects & tell the craftsman which to do first, 2nd etc. Upon arriving, the craftsman looks @ your projects and gives an estimate of the time required. You are the boss and you know your budget, so we inform you to tell the craftsman when to stop working. Our craftsman are trained on this basis as well. Very easy to set up the appointment and to get an estimate of the job. I was warned of some potential issues with matching the color of the siding on the house and they were able to come up with a way to deal with it that was not expensive. They did the work when I was at work and kept me informed of the progress. I couldn't ask for anything better - the whole process was very easy and quick.
Description of Work: The Handyman Can removed a door from the back of my house and put siding over it.

He called because there was a snow the night before and traffic was terrible so he was a little late. He did a great job with an unusual fan set up and was done in an hour. The new fan has been working great.

Dear Customer, Thank you for reviewing our replacement of your vent fan. Yes, very unusual fan style (squirrel cage industrial), with heavy duty 3 x 10 sheet metal ducting. I told Bill he might have to pull and Apollo 13 and create a round to rectangular adaptor (square peg in a roung hole). He did it and enjoyed telling me how. I'm really glad I found you on Angie's List. Sue Richardson PS Johnny O. even came back on a Saturday to complete the painting of my walls. Now that's dedication.
Description of Work: When Bill began the work on my bedroom I wrote an interim review regarding his excellent professional skills and attitude. The work done at that point was more than satisfactory to me. After the ceiling and attic area dried out from the ice build up, Bill was able to complete the remainder of the repairs. It took him only 1 week to rip out walls, ceiling, and wet insulation; repair all areas with new and better product, and paint the area. I was so very pleased with the nice job that was done. It was absolutely beautiful. My new ceilings are so much nicer than what was in there before. Bill and Johnny O. were competent, thorough, and effectively used the time at my home to do quality work. Any questions I had were answered with complete details making it easy for me to understand.

I was very impressed with John's responsiveness. He emailed me within an hour of my initial contact (on a Saturday). We connected by phone and set up a time for a bid. Although I ended up canceling the appointment because it turned out that the tile contractor we hired has his own handyman, I would not hesitate to contact John for another job. An even more pleasant surprise was receiving a hand-written thank you note from John a day or two later. A class act!

Bill worked very hard to do the repair properly and efficiently. He spent at least 2 hours working in cramped conditions wearing a breathing apparatus, and in large amounts of moldy, wet, fiberglass insulation. He took pictures to show me what was done and it was perfect. He did a great job and I am very satisfied. The remainder of the work, in our bedroom walls and ceiling, has yet to be completed, as we have to wait for the moisture to subside where it was frozen like large long icicles along my internal walls. This is the largest part of the job which has yet to be done. I will keep you informed when we start the work. It will be the beginning of next week, depending on the temperatures and the weather.
Description of Work: Revented the bathroom fan so the moisture would not leak into the sheetrock of our ceiling.

WOW, as this was my first experience (but not the last) with Handyman Can, I would say this was thee best experience with hiring someone to help. I called them and they returned my call quickly. They asked for some information about my needs and said someone would be contacting me soon. Which he did. Matt got there and went right to work. He pull snow off my roof and then went up and worked for hours to get chanels in the ice on my roof. He even went beyond by puling snow off my front roof too. Matt was the most professional and nicest person I have ever had worked with. I would highly recommend Handyman Can to anyone looking for excellent and professional work do. I plan on keeping them as my go to guys for all my project that are being planed for this summer. As a senior I could not have asked for a better experience. THANKS MATT!!!!!!
