When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. I had this work done on my mother's house, and to quote her comments, "Excellent service! Great work by craftsman Bill!" Very professional. I checked the work too and was very impressed. When their office realized there was an over payment made on the work performed, they immediately contacted my mom and refunded the amount the same day. I would definitely use them again at my mother's house or mine.
Description of Work: Purchased & installed two new storm doors, sealing & painting the door jams and surrounding areas, replaced the threshold on side door of the garage.

This is an old, 1950's cabin that has been added on to and updated many times, often with very poor workmanship. I expected there to be "glitches" along the way and I was most impressed that John remained unflustered by what was uncovered as the project progressed. He remained determined not to cut corners and to leave us with a professional job done and that is what he did. He was always available for questions and concerns and I felt comfortable being honest with him. The men he had come to do various parts of this job were very professional and respectful of our time and our home. I have never had workers remove their shoes each time and clean up so well! John sends out the person with the right expertise for the specific job and I found every one of his long time workers to be conscientious and proud of their work. When a new worker came out and did a poor job, John sent an expert out within days to totally redo this framing. The only difficult thing was the time it took to finish the whole project as this company appears to be booked solid and may not have a lot of wiggle room with time when things go wrong. To be clear and fair, a lot of problems were discovered as the project progressed because this is an old, poorly constructed house. To John's credit, when I contacted him about the length of time passing, he figured out a way to get his men here quickly and to have them stay until the project was completed and completed correctly. I paid to get the job done right and it was. I will definitely hire this company again.
Description of Work: Replaced roof and installed skylights, bow window, and multiple awning windows. Insulated ceiling/floor. Finish work around windows and on ceiling.

Not sure Matt had ever installed a garbage disposal but he got it in ok. The window was patched so it would not leak in the winter with plans to completely replace in spring. I can remember the estimate at the time but I felt it was too high and decided not to use them again.

Everything went well, the external light was in much worse shape than I initially thought. It seemed to be an inside light socket that was installed outside, not good. Anyway, the installer pointed out the issue, checked my requirements for a new motion sensor flood light and installed it. The install looks great, you can tell he knew what he was doing. He explained to me how it works, where the motion center was facing and such. Price was actually a little under what I thought initially. Would use again...

I was given a $2200 estimate with a $220 discount which comes to $1980 to install an exterior prehung door. The price was outrageous! Who pays that much to install a $200 door which I've already paid for?!

Upon review of the crack across your concrete floor causing a long crack in the ceramic tile, I talked to our tile sub-contracting expert. He had seen this before and new the correct procedure to produce a repair. Although he could offer no warranty due to probable continued cracking in the concrete surface below. A repair with warranty would have included partial demolition and replacement of your concrete floor. For our part, I did not follow up to make sure the sub-contractor was in touch with and following up with you our customer. I apologize. I have reached out to the sub-contractor for an explanation. The Initial contact went fairly well although provider uses an answering service to get a description of the work. I wasn't clear at first what this provider could or could not do and if I could get the work done before October. 2nd and 3rd telephone calls were a bit frustrating because it seemed the person answering could not reference anything from my earlier calls and I had to go over everything again, even when I only wanted to relay a brief message or ask a question. I found it best to communicate via email. My estimates came through the email as well as the schedule day and time. Although the charges are based on the time and materials, the estimate turned out to be pretty accurate. Also, there is a 10% discount that was applied since I'm an Angies List member. I was able to schedule the work just within a couple of weeks from my initial contact, which I found that other highly rated handyman services were not able to accommodate. The work was done in an orderly matter. For my projects, the worker needed to go to local stores to get supplies. That does count toward time charges. The worker was efficient and stayed at the jobs until the work was finished. I was pleased with the work. He was also good at keeping me informed of what he was doing and he reviewed everything with me before he finished. The owner called me a few days later to make sure that everything went okay. I thought the 1st hour charges were rather high, although using several hours of time on jobs does even out the overall costs and there are no trip charges. I could have saved some money if I had bought the wood hand rails myself. This would have saved an extra trip by serviceman to the local store. I would also suggest to anyone using a handyman service to get outside work done earlier in the year, because the fall months of Sept and October tend to be very busy for 'handyman' providers.
Description of Work: Fixed operation of a couple of exterior doors, including a storm door- which did not properly close. Replace a couple of short 2x4 boards on a small deck that were rotten. Secured some a couple pieces of siding that were loose. Secured a small frame around a gable vent near top of house. Replace wooden handrails on outside stairway and painted new ones with primer.

During the winter the open area under the extension was a source of cold in the kitchen until enough snow had been piled in there to close it off. I thought that the work would be fairly simple, just frame the area and close it off. Johnny Thomas suggested adding more insulation before closing it off, to ensure that the kitchen stayed warm during the winter. Work went smoothly, despite the limited space in which to work. Insulation was cut to size and packed into the space, which was then closed off with boards. Very pleasant company to work with. My cats are not happy. They liked the open space as it gave them a good place to view the back yard that was out of the weather. C'est la vie.
Description of Work: Insulated and closed off underneath a kitchen extension. The original contractor had failed to complete this work.

John Thomas came to estimate the job and sent a detailed estimate within a few days. We had a number of things that needed attention but in the end decided to focus on the windows and gutter repair. Soon after the job started it became obvious that many more window panes needed re-glazing than originally thought. John brought in more team members and the work took place over more days than initially scheduled. He stuck with his original cost estimate even though I suspect it cost more in time and labor than originally thought. He communicated regularly and the team did an excellent job. They were able to meet our "hard" deadline of the Sunday service and everything was cleaned up and the windows sparkled. I would strongly recommend using The Handyman Can.
Description of Work: Handyman Can cleaned and re-glazed a number of multi-pane, very old windows at our church. In addition they repaired storms as needed and provided a mechanism to raise and lower the window/storms more effectively. Also repaired a gutter.

First estimate appointment was scheduled which resulted in a no call no show by the Handyman. A second appointment was setup, an hour and 30 minutes past the supposed arrival time, the Handyman showed up. Measurements were taken, professional suggestions were offered, and an emailed estimate arrived within four days. The estimate was for $5800. Three other business's were contacted to provide estimates, all other estimates were under $1000. I understand the need to juggle the competing demands of a small business with big growth, but after mulling it over for sometime, I still am unable to come away from this experience without feeling insulted.

Dear Customer, You are correct that I missed our first appointment. As a young kid I remember making excuses as if to say a promise broken + a good excuse = a promise kept. I don't do that anymore. There is no excuse. I missed our appointment. The second appointment, I did keep calling you letting you know my appointments were running late and if it still worked for you to have me come out. I'm glad I got to meet you. You were a very pleasant, easy-to-be-with fellow. I looked up the estimate a minute ago. You have a shorter tub installed replacing a standard size. That left an unframed opening at the rear of the tub. The narrower tub foot-print left a void in the floor along the outside of the tubs' long side. The cement board required total replacement in that the over lap @ the tub perimeter was not in alignment. The studs would require firring out to get the alignment correct. Johnny was very creative with our needs for a dishwasher that would maximize space. Per his recommendations and assurance I purchased $700 dishwasher that I had delivered to our home. After spending an hour, and the 30 min the contractor was late, explaining what we were expecting and was quoted to us; I was told that the way we had planned on the install for the portable dishwasher was not possible.
Description of Work: Jhonny, the president of the company, came and gave an estimate for a 9x9 window pane replacement, some stairway molding work, and a dishwasher.

My recollection was a small kitchen and the dishwasher took up a lot of room especially when entertaining guests. You wanted to keep the dishwasher next to the countertop ending and not roll it to the faucet. I thought my solution and Jeremys installation was brilliant. Quick disconnects so you could roll the dishwasher into another room. Jeremy installed the disconnects so they would always be coupled correctly. Again, I regret we did not meet your expectations. I was impressed with the responsiveness of getting the initial appointment set up and the person I spoke with was friendly and professional. However, when it came time for the appointment, nobody showed up. I called the only phone number I had with me, which happened to be the staffed message center. I spoke with someone and they let me know they'd be in contact with the business and have someone call me back as soon as possible. I received a call and text from the owner 10 hours later. I called back a few days later to reschedule the appointment and spoke with the message center again. I have not received a call back regarding the reschedule and it's been almost two days since then. I've found another installation company I will be going with. Very disappointed, especially since this company has such great Angie's List reviews.

The began seeming to be a relatively simple project, but got complicated. I had an angled, custom built cabinet with a broken hinge. The existing hinge was no longer made, so Mike had to go various places to find a suitable replacement. In the end, the doors had to be cut down and reframed to make it work. The whole process took about 2 months, but was worth it. I am happy with the finished product.
Description of Work: I needed the hinges replaced on an existing built-in cabinet in a restroom.

Everything went great. Jeremy was efficient and responsive. He was incredibly helpful and made sure to show us everything he'd done. In addition, there was one file cabinet lock he couldn't fix and he showed us how to fix it ourselves after ordering a replacement part. He even took a picture on his phone of the interior of the cabinet while it was disassembled so we'd know what part to look for online. We would definitely hire The Handyman Can again!
Description of Work: The provider fixed a number of things in our small office environment. Problems included broken file cabinets, sticky locks and a broken conference room folding table.

It went great. My project was difficult because very high outside ladder work was needed for the siding repair part of the project. Unfortunately, the weather was uncooperative with us on several days we had attempted to get a start on the project - going way up on a metal ladder during rain and thunder storms is not a good idea! As a result, I worked closely with the assigned technician to reschedule several times. He was very diligent about keeping in touch with me making sure I knew exactly when he would arrive each time we made an attempt to work this project in between bouts of bad weather. We finally were able to get this done on Monday (before storms hit again on Tuesday). The work was handled beautifully and efficiently. Rick, the tech assigned to my fairly difficult project, was very knowledgeable and competent. I would trust him with any work in my house, and he told me the others in this group are very good. I have had several bad experiences with various handymen, so it's great to finally have a good place to call. Based on my prior bad experiences, I would speculate that this company might not always be the cheapest with completely rock-bottom pricing, but I've learned the hard way that it make fiscal sense to get it done right the first time. As one example, the garage door project The Handyman Can did for me Monday had to start by ripping out something done by a different outfit. Last, I should also point out that the office was great to work with for billing and initial set up, and the owner called last night to make sure I was pleased with everything. All in all, a class act.
Description of Work: Fixed a hole in my exterior siding by cutting and fitting in a replacement board. Installed a new garage door weatherstrip retainer and weatherstripping for 18 foot door.

We just wanted some rotten wood in our door frame replaced. The bid came back around $600. We had the work done by another contractor for around $250. Other contractor also responded within minutes and was able to come the next business day. Happy with the other contractor, price and quality.
Description of Work: Contacted the provider for an estimate on some door work. They got back to me within 24 hours, but just to gather more information. Took about 3 days to get an estimate after sending some pictures. Bid came back higher than I expected and work schedule was booked for at least a month out. So we went with another contractor.

They replaced a bathroom vanity for us, which revealed missing sheetrock behind the sink. They repaired it with such attention to detail! They left the work site spotless and were true professionals. We are having them back to tile our kitchen floor.

.Jeremy arrived punctually, went right to work. He needed no staffing, wasted no time, was very professional. I thought this was going to be a simple job - It looked a lot more complicated when I saw how attentive to detail Jeremy was. He had me open every window as he finished, so he could check to see whether it opened with ease. I thought this service was a little pricey, a little more than i had intended to pay. Believe me, it was WORTH EVERY CENT.
Description of Work: He cleaned and lubricated 8 tall Andersen casement windows: (The staff person was smart enough to ask in advance for a pdf file from Andersen on the how-to of the maintenance, and also to tell me what materials I should have on hand.) So Jeremy 1. used pressurized air to clean out the areas. 2. used soap and water as necessary to clean the areas. 3. removed the handles to lubricate the inner gears. 4. lubricated the bottom outer gears 5. lubricated the hinges on both the bottom and the top of the windows

Johnny Thomas and Sara (the office manager) together have a great team of people. Friendly, prompt and punctual, great communication, and very candid in their suggestions and honest in their dealings. They are precise in explanations, they understand what you are trying to get done, have practical advice and great insight into the work that needs to be done. We worked with various teams on the different small projects around the house, and we had no complaints at all. They gave us accurate estimates, precise records of the project description, changes to dollar amounts and services. Not only were the teams skilled and knowledgeable, they were very friendly, respectful and attentive both towards people and their work. We HIGHLY recommend working with John Thomas on all small and large projects for your home.

We had ongoing trouble with our folding closet doors ever since the purchase of the condo and had two short-lived repairs completed. The most recent estimate prior to The Handyman Can's estimate said that the entire mechanism including the door tracks needed replaced. The person from Handyman, Rick, fixed both folding doors using tools he brought with without any additional parts or expense. He also installed a shower bar with an attached for soap and shampoo and installed three wire basket kitchen cabinet organizers. The total charge was reasonable and far less than the other estimates. I was very pleased with Rick's workmanship, clean-up, friendliness, and with Handyman's communication process overall. I plan on using them for future projects.
Description of Work: The provider repaired two folding doors, installed a shower grab bar, and installed three wire basket pull-out kitchen cabinet organizers.

The work performed was great. I had expected to have to replace the light fixture, but Mike thought that it might just need a box within the existing fixture replaced at a much lesser cost than the new fixture I had purchased. A quick trip to Home Depot solved the problem and I was very happy to return the other fixture for a refund. He was very knowledgable, friendly and quick. I was thrilled with his visit. What I did have an issue with was the scheduling. It was a very frustrating process and I felt like we were never quite on the same wave length in our communication. When I tried to call back in to speak with someone, I had to answer the same questions over and over, as if I had never called before and was looking for new service. I just wanted to speak to someone that could help me. I had to pretty much resort to e-mail. I was supposed to hear from the repair person the night before to confirm our time, but never received a call. I had to check in again the next morning (I was leaving work to have this work done) to make sure someone was going to be at my house at the appointed time. What I found out is that Mike didn't even know that he was supposed to come to my house until the office contacted him after I called to re-confirm that this was actually happening. It all worked out fine in the end, but I think communication is something that could be better. Maybe this was just a fluke incident, I don't know. Would I use them again? Yes, based on the quality of the work that was done. Mike was great!
