When I was 5, mom caught me taking apart a watch and a toaster at my grand parents home. She scolded me, but grandpa insisted that she let me be. I fixed the toaster. The watch, well it didn’t work in the first place. When I was 15, my mom hired my cousin Jim, 10 years my senior, to finish our basement. Being an ever curious young man, I asked Jim questions and he put me to work alongside him. We worked a night or two a week for 2 years. Then Jim became busy raising his own family and work came to a standstill. Mom wanted the basement finished for my older sisters’ graduation. Jim asserted that I could finish it. I wasn’t so sure, but he said he’d tell me what to do over the phone. He did, and the job was completed on time, much to the delight and pride of mom. In 1977 I purchased and lived in a duplex. I graduated Vo-Tech in 1971 with "Outstanding Student" and "Perfect Attendance" Awards. In 1980 I purchased and live in one side of a double bungalow. The ensuing 21 years of pulling permits, passing city, fire department and HUD inspections made for an excellent background to performing construction, installation and repairs properly. From 1972 to 1983 I worked for Gould Battery (also known as GNB). I worked in engineering at the Mendota Heights facility. I was a product and applications technologist, a fancy title, but it contributed to my handyman skills by requiring problem solving. Some of the engineers owned duplexes and we would problem solve together at lunchtime. Hence, many of the jobs I got, challenge me to solve a problem along the way to making the repair, installation. In 1995 I began my Handyman business. In 1997 I sold my duplexes. In 1998, I got my license and became incorporated. We needed a storm door reinstalled and I called several people from Angie's List. Even though it was 2 weeks out, Jon was the first person (and only) person to get us on his schedule. Jon confirmed his appointment, communicated throughout the process, and installed the door to our satisfaction. We were very happy and would definitely call again. Very professional!!

John is quite amazing. Although other reviewers have stated he is very busy, he contacted us right away and we discussed by phone what might be possible on our list and what might not. He then told us when he could come by for a walk through, sent us an email estimate to confirm the work we were planning (subject to change at our 'walk through meeting'). He arrived for that meeting on time, and revised his email estimate within minutes of departure. Work was scheduled 2 days later. He called in advance to find out if it was okay if he brought an assistant along at no extra charge. During his walk through, he was taking notes and checking w/ local places to order supplies on the spot. Shortly thereafter, he had several solutions planned and was arranging to get supplies. All work was completed in one day. He gave us several suggestions that were great--for darkening shades he had a better option than the product we had been given. Now it is much darker in the guest/master bedroom during summer months. He gave us a suggestion for the shower 'to try'. Although it worked for a while, we are leaking again, but it was worth it. We were willing to take the risk and know that Johnny will be back to install some lights for us in the near future, so we will address that at that time. As a bonus, although he gave us the name of someone to assist w/ our natural gas hookup, he also HAD THEM CALL US. Now that is customer service. He will be returning to install some lights that we needed to order--we were not quite sure what was necessary and agreed to place the order after he gave us some additional information. He and his co worker were polite, efficient and a pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Replaced toilet flush valve, Installed deflector in ceiling to divert air vent, replace non functioning motion sensor flood light in back yard, install darkening shades in master bedroom/guest room to block out light, repair leaky shower faucet. Gave us the name of someone to run a natural gas line from our basement out to the deck as this was not in his wheelhouse.

The work was done promptly and efficiently. The quality of work was excellent. The installer, Ricky was courteous, professional, and was a pleasure to work with. His quality of workmanship was outstanding. When inevitable challenges came up, he improvised with great skill and creativity. The two bathrooms he updated are jewels of the house and strong selling points.
Description of Work: Installed closet doors in three rooms. Tore out two bathrooms floor and installed new DuraCeramic floosr. Installed new vanities in both bathrooms.

Johnny showed up on time, provided an estimate and did the work. Johnny first took out the old stove. My house is about 100 years old and we needed to remove doors and railings to get the new stove into the house. Johnny got the parts for the new stove and found that the gas inlet to the stove did not have a protective cap and the threads were stripped. He took photographs and sent me a detailed report of the condition of the new stove. Johnny got a new router and repaired the gas inlet. He found plumber's tape and took pictures of this (conclusion: someone had tried to install the stove, messed up the gas inlet and then returned the stove. Someone had been repackaged the stove and sold it to me as new). The new stove was installed and checked to see if it worked. All was good, Johnny cleaned up and left with a smile. He is a fast, good worker and knew his business. If I had installed the stove, I would not have realized the gas inlet problem and there would have been a gas leak. The seller of the stove reimbursed me for the extra time and parts to repair the gas inlet.
Description of Work: remove old gas stove and install new gas stove. Repair flaw in new gas stove. Seller reimbursed $100 of cost of service due to flaw in new stove. Overall cost of service afterwards about $400.

Very well!! Mike was the name of the craftsman that completed my work. Although I had a very rough blueprint prepared, Mike pointed out the flaws in the plan and offered alternatives which would work better. His work and work ethic were exceptional and the company was very accommodating, working outside the hours initially offered for my convenience and due to miscalculation on my part on the amount of time needed to complete the work. I would certainly use this company again. I still love my closets over a year later.
Description of Work: Remodeled two closets, including a master bedroom closet and a second bedroom. Included installation of cabinetry, shelving, and all hardware for hanging clothes.

Johnny came out as we requested to look at a damaged roof in an RV. Even though it was not a vehicle/area that Handyman Can could fix, Johnny was responsive in offering us a reference for a company to work on RVs. Also he went out of his way to assist us in replacing the tarp we had to protect the damaged roof. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Johnny examined the interior and climbed on the roof of an RV to look at the damage to the roof. He assisted in replacing the tarp over the area as well. He also looked at the entire roof and made recommendation as to a possible fix.

I had garter snakes coming in and this sealed them off. Space was cramped and he did an excellent job. We needed the job done quickly as it was going on the market for sale and this needed to be done first. Very pleased with the service.

It didn't go....no one contacted me one way or another.
Description of Work: Ricky came out and looked over what I needed done and said he would get me an estimate by the end of the week. I never heard from him. I then contacted the office on 3-9-15 via Angie's List messages and Jean King responded back that Ricky is indeed the craftsman that is creating my bid. She said she was researching and will give me an update soon. So far no one has contacted me and it is 3-16!

Overall I think it went well and I was pleased with the work they did. I thought the guys that came were very professional and they were able to get things done in that same day which I appreciated. They worked in such a way where they told me what materials to get and as a customer I got it, and then they came and did the installation. I would use them again. I think they got back to me rather quickly, and back and forth what little we did have to do was very timely. They were there on time. They were very respectful of my time and my home. I have a dog and they were fine working around him because he just wanted to help.
Description of Work: I used The Handyman Can to put trim on all the windows in my house plus my front door.

As far as I know, they had been fine according to my client. We would use them again if they need some minor maintenance stuff that we needed to get done because the way that it is, they buy a home and they get the inspection period and then there's stuff that comes up after that inspection period.
Description of Work: I had a client use The Handyman Can Inc. for just some basic maintenance stuff which was primarily interior like change out some doors and fix some door jambs.

They called me back right away. They were very easy to set up appointments with. They showed up on time and when they said they would. They gave an estimate and did not go above that estimate and the quality of the work was really good.

John was very knowledgeable and courteous in our home. He helped us with showing us how we could open up our doorway to our second story. (We needed to make it taller to fit our queen boxspring). Although we did not ultimately hire Handyman Can to complete the work, was able to figure out a different solution. I would hire John in the future. He was very friendly and his quote was reasonable. He was prompt and they would have been able to complete the job in a days time. I was impressed with this company and will hire them in the future.
Description of Work: John came out and looked at some remodeling work that needed to be done to our doorway. He provided an estimate for the work that needed to be completed.

service was excellent from start to finish. Scheduling was easy and the installer was awesome. The Job was done perfectly and I will definatly hire again for services like that. :The installer went above and beyond and was considerate of our situation which included a professional cleaning company coming right after and him labeling the newly installed trim to warn the cleaning company. Great company, will hire again.

I had wanted them to put up heating coils to prevent ice dams and their electrician's price was incredibly high so I didn't have them do it. The guy who came out to do the quote, he was very personable, very professional, really seem to know his stuff. They did good work on what they did. I have no complaints. It's just that their bid was too high on the heating coils and the electrical work so I didn't have them do it. It turned out really well.
Description of Work: I used The Handyman Can. I had them paint some basement window frames and I had them replace a gable vent.

Dear Customer, Yes, electrical cables can be expensive. I empathize with the sticker shock. Perhaps this with help a bit: In your application, 3 circuits were required: 1 for front left valley, 1 for front right valley, 1 for rear roof. These circuits must be dedicated to run the heat cables only, hence they have to originate @ the breaker panel. They have to be dedicated so they aren't tripped by sharing the current with other outlets etc. We run the heat cables through the out-spouts 1st, then up the down-spouts, into the gutter, onto the roof & finally to the outlet located near the soffit. We install so that you turn them on/off @ the breaker panel, no switches purposely so that they aren't mistakenly turned off. Another reason for no switch is that switches can fail & you don't need that when you are trying to prevent ice. Thank you for rating the rest of our work. The provider was able to come the day after my initial call, so I was pleased with their responsiveness. They showed up a couple of hours late, but kept me informed they were running late via phone calls. The service man that arrived was very courteous. I felt, however, that the service man worked a little too fast and was rushing. The owner John had previously said over the phone that the repair would probably take 6-8 hours but it only took 3. Once completed, I found the repair acceptable for an unfinished basement floor; however, I was a bit disappointed in the quality to price ratio. It was $700 for 16 bags of cement and three hours of work. I would use this provider again, but would be clear to communicate my expectations for quality/workmanship.
Description of Work: Provider performed concrete repair in basement floor. The concrete had been previously busted up during a plumbing repair.

The Handyman contacted me immediately after the holidays and provided his estimate of the work to be completed. Once we agreed on the details, an appointment was made for them to come and do the work, which happened to be the next day. They were very punctual and did all of the work in one day! He came up with a solution for the slant of the floor level which makes me feel confident that, should anything leak in future, water will not reach the drywall again. The new water heater is working well and I am pleased with the quality of their work. I definitely feel better now that the mold issue is resolved!! The Price Rating shows "B" because I had nothing to compare their price against. I felt that their estimate was fair, went with it and am glad I did!
Description of Work: Disconnect and set aside water softener, to be re-installed. Remove and haul old water heater to be recycled. Remove & dispose moldy drywall & insulation including as far behind furnace as possible. Treat wall cavity(s) with mold kill. Install new insulation & drywall. Apply 1 coat of drywall mud. Furnish and replace water heater. Re-install water softener.

Dear Customer, Affirmation goes out to you for solving the freezing softener discharge tube problem by getting it off the cold floor. For those reading this: The close fitting layout of furnace, water heater and softener left no room for a standard fresh air intake, that is, an insulated duct placed in a 5 gallon pail. Your fresh air make up comes from an in-the-wall sheet metal duct. No wonder it's so cold in there. It's nice to run into folks with know-how & problem solving skills. It went well. Overal, we were happy with the contractor and their work (including the cabinet person). They were a bit pricey.

After apologizing for missing my original call the work was scheduled and completed to my satisfaction. I was also given an additional discount for my first request for service had been missed. results of work look very good. Will definitely use again. Made sure I was pleased before final payment was made.
Description of Work: installed gutter and down spout on garage service door side. Repaired and installed aluminum covering on garage service door.

I left a message in the morning, got a call back early the same afternoon, and it was finished later afternoon. The work was solid, and done efficiently and cleanly.

The entire job went very well from the estimate to completion. John was very knowledgeable and provided all the information I needed to buy the flooring, tile, and paint. Once the job began, everything ran on schedule. Bill was very punctual, diligent, and everything was cleaned up daily. The job was completed in a week, closely approximating the estimate. Both rooms look great.
Description of Work: Installed new flooring and painted laundry room. Removed old tile, repaired wall, and installed new tile in bathroom.

The work done directly by The Handyman Can was of excellent quality. Really excellent! We had them do a small project first; i.e. install a new bathroom vanity. I was so impressed by the workmanship and attention to detail (even matching the texturing on the wall behind the sink when done) that we had them back for other projects. By the 3rd project, I realized that they consistently under-estimate the cost and mid-way through the project, something happens and the price needs to be adjusted upward. Also, they sub-contracted the glass block project and it was a disaster. They came to fix the work but it is still of poor quality and the window is drafty.
Description of Work: We had them do multiple jobs for us, the largest being laying a sub-floor and new tile in the kitchen. We also had them install a new vanity in a bathroom, and replace an old window with glass block.

I received a response from provider after several phone calls and email for contact in setting up estimate and hopefully date of work to begin. They notified me that they were too busy to set a date for any contact at this time and would get to me on a first come first serve basis. Thus, I have no further info. I am finding it very difficult to hire a handy man through Angies List. I have found it very difficult to hire handymen to do small jobs especially, but any jobs in general. I had hoped to have better luck with Angies List options. RESPONSE TO Providers Response to my Original Review: This was one of my first Angies List experiences so I was disappointed. But I DO UNDERSTAND. I did apprecaite the email you left appologizing and explaining as in this review and I did appreciate it as well. I will consider this Provider in the future for future tasks for this type of provider. Thank you.
Description of Work: I contacted this provider for an estimate for handyman work projects needed at my home. I had sent several emails and phone calls to provider without any success on setting estimate or date for work to begin.
