Russ did a great job. He gave us some suggestions to improve safety. I will use him any time I have an issue with an old window.
Description of Work: Russ replaced a window for a french door that is original to our 1922 house.

He was very nice and he gave me a lot of information. I really think he had the love for old houses and he was proficient with that. He?s an expert on that as well. I think he really seems to know his stuff. He thought he was very good and I might use him again. He took some time to get back to me, but he told me that he would take a while. I would use his services again in the future.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Russ’s Old House for restoring the windows in my house, but I did not use them. They came out probably in October or December 2010 to give me an estimate. I do not remember the estimated cost.

Russ did a great job. It took a while to get on his schedule- I had originally thought he would get to us in late September but it turned out to be late October. Once he got over though he was quick. Very professional and personable. I'd go back to him-- but maybe in the early summer instead of the fall.
Description of Work: Russ replaced three panes of glass in two very old and very large approximately 24 pane windows. He replaced these with antique glass. He also replaced a large pane in another window. Russ fixed the sashes and replaced sash cords on all three windows.

He was fabulous. It was a very large window and I think it was a very tough job but he did a good job. I don?t remember how much it costed me but it did not bother me at all; I could take that. I thought it was reasonable. I did not look anywhere else so I had no idea about the price. I will use him again in the future.

Russ was really great. We had three window sashes that needed replacing in a very old house. One in particular was very difficult and was unopenable for at least 6 years. He spent many extra hours (nearly 2 days) to fix all three. And he added extra details (washing the hard to reach window and cleaning the seal on a 4th window). He really knows old windows, cares about maintaining their historic original form, and yet he makes sure everything works properly. We felt he was very trustworthy and enjoyed working with him.

Russ is just a great guy - the whole family hung out and watched Russ do his thing. Even the dogs loved him. We learned so much about the care and maintenance of our windows and it was reassuring to learn that they weren't as bad as we had originally thought. He is extremely detail-oriented and is very attuned to the aesthetics of the overall window. Cleaned up after himself very nicely. You can tell he enjoys his work and helping people who appreciate their old windows, keep them. The best part is learning how restoring and retrofitting our windows to be more energy-efficient is far more affordable than we thought (less than replacement windows) and is in line with our goal to maintain the character of our old house, which we love. We will absolutely have Russ back in the spring to do a major overhaul of all our windows, and look forward to seeing him again.
Description of Work: Russ replaced a pane of broken glass (and used matching "old" glass from a salvaged window), re-glazed and added new weather stripping in an original 1914 window. Also inspected all of our other windows and discussed their future needs. Because the window with the broken glass was directly over my 3 year old son's bed (and November weather was moving in), Russ offered to move us up in his repair schedule, worked over the weekend and had the window re-installed in 4 days. The resulting refurbished window looks and works better than it has in probably 40 years. We were originally going to do just an estimate for the upstairs windows, but when he heard about the one broken window, he said he would come prepared to fix it ASAP. He ended up charging less than estimated because the window was so easy to take apart. We decided to use old (salvaged) glass to match the other windows, which upped the cost slightly but it was still under the original estimate.

Provided very detailed estimate and recommendations on what exactly needed to be completed. Work was done very well and in a timely manner. Russ was great to deal with-very friendly and honest about what needed to get done to which windows and provided several options for repair. Awesome job.

Every part of my experience with Russ was a joy. He came on time to do the estimate, inspected and measured all the windows on my "repair list" with care, and brought along a list of references and an album of "before and after" restoration jobs. He sent me a detailed estimate promptly. I found his costs very reasonable for such old-fashioned labor-intensive craft work, and I hired him to do the worst of my windows this fall. His work on the window exceeded my expectations in every way. He was a marvel of efficiency, working on the sash restoration (futzy, time-consuming work) in his workshop while also coming to my home multiple times to properly prime and paint the sill. He did beautiful work, and he finished the entire job in under a month, ahead of schedule. He was always good-natured, courteous, reliable, and just a great guy and a real pro. He loves old houses and it was a pleasure to talk with him about them. I plan to have him do all my remaining windows eventually.
Description of Work: Restore original "piano window" in my older home, including stripping, reglazing, and staining two 6-pane sashes and stripping, painting, and caulking the sill. I was thrilled to find Russ's Old House on Angie's List, after searching and searching for a contractor who would restore my beautiful but deteriorating old windows. All of the other window contractors I contacted focused on swapping in a replacement window.

Amazing. I learned a great deal about windows, refurbishing versus replacing and just exactly where I wanted to head with our new home. Turns out there is a window that will very likely need Russ's expertise when the summer rolls around. He reminded me to call early as he is booking out already. Russ may be new to Angie's list but he is clearly NOT new to windows. I am sure he will have many positive comments on Angie's list by the time I wind up calling him again.
Description of Work: Called Russ to see if he could help to convert old window's to more energy efficient ones by SPARING the window (glass) and frame (sash), and just replacing the insert. He said ''no'' but had the names of two people to give me. Found them on the spot, gave me the phone numbers, and some more educational information to boot!
