Good responsiveness and followup after initial inquiry. Estimate was provided in our absence and left in writing. The workmanship itself was very good, if not excellent. However, the incorrect stain was used. We declined the offer of a re-do mainly because we wanted to use our deck and didn't want to delay it for another two weeks or longer. The good news is that we are now happy with the end result, although it was a bit of a shock to see a redwood stain instead of the honey stain we had originally requested. We did receive a price adjustment for the inconvenience but still felt we needed to rate quality at a "B" for this error. Our marks for punctuality are rated B because a week passed from the agreed-upon work start date to the actual date the work was completed. Our furniture sat on the lawn during this time and of course, we were not able to use the deck. There was also some confusion as to the actual amount due when the work was completed but we did receive a fair price in the end. And we've received lots of compliments from the neighbors and others that had seen the deck prior to refinishing.
Description of Work: This company refinished our deck. Price included stripping of old stain, cleaning, monitoring the moisture content of the wood during drying phase, hand-application of new stain, etc. Deck furniture, grills, etc., may be moved for an additional charge.

Good. They did my deck three years ago, and while I liked the way it looked, I did not realize then that their technique is something that requires reapplication every two years. Thus, I am not quite sure the price is worth it in the long run - having to spend that amount every two years. With that said, I freely admit I am not an expert, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt and report my experience. After negotiating the price (I asked them to honor their previous price, which they did), they came and performed the work in a two-step process over a couple of weeks. They are very communicative and provide excellent written materials explaining every step in the process, the options, etc. They also leave nice thank you cards and exhibit good customer service (which is often lacking nowadays). The deck looks very nice now (it takes a couple of weeks for the final color to show through), and I look forward to enjoying it this summer.
Description of Work: They stripped, cleaned, and restained and sealed my deck with a combination stainer/sealer

They were reasonably priced. They did run the water for 13 hours straight so my water bill ended up being higher. They didn't totally clean up afterwords but did come back and clean after my call. For future customers, I would suggest they get everything away from the house and the flower beds should be covered with tarps.
Description of Work: They showed me a sample of the colors after being painted on the wood, when they came out to paint my roof they sprayed it on and it looked different. I requested the darkest and it ended up being the next color down when it was sprayed on.

I'M SORRY SHE DID NOT FEEL THAT WE WERE INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH HER. I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED RESTORING HER DECK AND FENCE. IN HER COMMENTS SHE MENTIONED THAT WE DID NOT CALL HER TO LET HER KNOW WE WERE COMING TO MEASURE HER DECK AND FENCE. WHEN PEOPLE INITIALLY CALL US FOR A QUOTE WE INFORM THEM THAT WE WILL NOT BE CONTACTING THEM BUT WE WILL STOP OUT WITHIN A COUPLE OF BUSINESS DAYS AND MEASURE AND PHOTOGRAPH THEIR PROJECT. OUR CUSTOMERS DO NOT NEED TO BE HOME TO RECEIVE A FREE QUOTE. WE THEN BRING ALL OF THE INFORMATION BACK TO THE OFFICE AND THEN MAIL A QUOTE. WE FIND THAT OUR CUSTOMER'S LIVES ARE SO BUSY THAT THEY APPRECIATE THAT WE DO NOT REQUIRE THEM TO BE HOME DURING THE MEASURING PROCESS. AFTER WE MAIL THE QUOTE WE TYPICALLY MAKE A COURTESY CALL TO MAKE SURE THE CUSTOMER RECEIVED THE QUOTE. WE DO NOT MAKE PUSHY FOLLOW UP SALES CALLS. WE FEEL THAT OUR PROFESSIONALISM WILL SELL OUR SERVICE. REGARDING THE PRICE, WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 1995 AND HAVE LOCATIONS IN SEVERAL STATES. ONE OF THE REASONS WE ARE ONE OF THE OLDEST DECK RESTORATION COMPANIES IN THE TWIN CITIES IS BECAUSE WE CHARGE A FAIR PRICE THAT ALLOWS US TO REMAIN IN BUSINESS. OUR PRICE ALLOWS US TO PROVIDE A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF SERVICE AND QUALITY AND REMAIN IN BUSINESS TO SERVE OUR CUSTOMERS FOR YEARS TO COME. I HOPE WE ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE HER.

The mark of an excellent company is its response if something goes wrong! It rained (not forecast) 1/2 hour after the decks were stained. They immediately said they would re-do it and came back twice before they determined it was dry enough to stain and then completed the job in as timely a matter as possible. Everyone I talked with was extremely helpful, very professional and eager to please. We had some questions about the deck after completion and were sent though to Mike Hilborn, the general manager, who got right back to us and came out quickly to check the deck. We decided that the deck had continued drying and was looking better each day, but his response was we could wait and see if it continued to improve or as he said "you tell me what you would like me to do", and I am convinced he meant it. We decided to wait, and as it completely dried were very satisfied. I know we will use this company again with great confidence

They came out within a few days of me calling to give me an estimate. I miscalculated the total cost, putting this bid higher than another one. As I was thinking it through on the phone, they offered a 10% discount. So, ask for that too! Mike and his crew were fantastic at communicating with me as to where we were in the process and how long it would be until the next step. It was a great experience. There was a little issue with needing the consent of our neighbor because of their plants that are next to the fence. That delayed the first day of work. That was really the only thing that came up. I also had to follow-up at the end as to when we would have to do the entire thing again, which wasn't in any of the information they gave us. (It was all about decks and not fences.) Mike got back to me right away on those questions.

My deck had extra challenges because the previous owner, who had the deck built 10 years ago, did not seem to seal the wood after proper seasoning, which I addressed with Mike Hilborn after receiving the estimate. Thus, it presented some significant challenges in order to be restored moss/mold in the shady areas, raised grain, splintered and cupping boards on the top rail and hand rails and one short handrail that had been painted. I knew there was a challenge here and when first calling for an estimate, asked to schedule a time for the estimate when I was available to address those challenges and my desired outcome in order to verify that they were even able and equipped to handle the task. This is apparently not part of their business plan and the scheduler was not willing to accommodate my request. I questioned whether some of the boards, particularly the top and hand rails, that had significant weathering and rough surfaces needed to be replaced, but was assured that is was more surface damage and could be corrected by sanding. I ll spare you the long version with details only to say that from the beginning of the job, the quality at each step in the process clean, prep and stain - needed to be monitored and redone because it wasn t complete or to my satisfaction mold and moss still present after cleaning, some damage and stain overspray to surrounding plants, rough boards on top and hand rails not sanded smooth, and I had to complete stripping the paint off the one railing if it were to be stained. I don t think my expectations were unreasonable, especially when working with a company whose specialty is deck restoration, and having addressed these problem areas with Mike before agreeing to hire their services. So, even though the end result is satisfactory, my suggestion, particularly if your deck is not new and has weathering challenges (our MN climate does seem to be harder on wood regardless of the type), is to insist on meeting with the person doing the estimate, discuss problem areas and how they plan to address them, making sure this information is itemized in the work plan included with the estimate. I don t think their slick marketing materials and business plan is equipped to handle situations like mine, but I have to give them credit, they did stick with it and completed the job to my satisfaction.

I'M PLEASED THAT TOM IS SATISFIED WITH THE WORK. WE PUT IN A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT INTO HIS DECK AND IT IS NICE TO KNOW HE IS HAPPY WITH THE RESULT. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING TOM AND I COMMUNICATED FREQUENTLY BY EMAIL AND BY PHONE REGARDING HIS DECK AND THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE A CHALLENGE. WE ARE UNIQUELY EQUIPPED TO HANDLE SUCH PROJECTS. AS YOU CAN READ IN TOM'S REVIEW, HE HAD NO PROBLEM CONTACTING ME OR HAVING ME ADDRESS HIS CONCERNS. WE CLEANED TOM'S DECK TWICE SO THE WOOD WOULD BE PREPARED PROPERLY. THE PAINT THAT NEEDED TO BE REMOVED WAS AGREED AT THE BEGINNING WOULD BE TOM'S RESPONSIBILITY. I PUT IN A LOT OF PERSONAL ATTENTION ON TOM'S DECK AND I'M PROUD OF THE RESULTS. I'M DISAPPOINTED THAT HE GAVE US SUCH A LOW GRADE. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT HE GAVE US A D FOR PUNCTUALITY AS WE WERE THERE WHEN WE SAID WE WOULD BE. HOWEVER, I DO APPRECIATE HIS COMMENTS AND WE WILL USE THIS REPORT TO IMPROVE OUR SERVICE.

This is a secondary report from 1.3 years ago. I was initially pleased with the work however as a short time went by, the stain on our deck floor literally disappeared. It is no longer repelling water and has faded severely. I contacted Roof to Deck and much to my dismay {and partially my own fault for not reading the fine print} they would not redo the deck floor. They stated that they would redo it at a reduced rate {$187.00}. This is completely unacceptable to me and they would not budge on this at all. I realize that we live in harsh conditions but come on, slightly over a year and in such poor condition. The last time our deck was stained it lasted over three years. I did not mention this in my last report as I thought it was minor however reading through the brochures they sent me {as if I was a new customer} I noticed they are supposed to pound in any protruding deck nails. This was not done at all and I feel compelled to rate them poorly due to the lack of commitment on their part to keep a customer happy.

I'M HAPPY TO HEAR THAT SHE WAS PLEASED WITH THE ORIGINAL WORK WE DID ON HER DECK. I'M DISAPPOINTED THAT SHE IS UNHAPPY WITH OUR LIMITED WARRANTY. TO PROTECT OUR CUSTOMERS AND OURSELVES WE HAVE A PRORATED LIMITED WARRANTY PROGRAM THAT WARRANTIES THE HORIZONTAL SURFACES FOR 2 YEARS AND THE VERTICAL SURFACES FOR 4 YEARS. AS MENTIONED IN HER COMMENTS ABOVE, THE FLOOR FADED. HER VERTICAL SURFACES WERE STILL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. WHEN I VISITED HER AND INSPECTED HER DECK I FOUND THAT HER DECK FLOOR WAS STILL PROTECTED WITH STAIN BUT DID NOT HAVE THE APPEARANCE THAT SHE OR I WOULD WANT. WHY DID THE FLOOR FADE TO WHERE SHE WAS UNHAPPY WITH THE CURRENT APPEARANCE? THERE ARE MANY POSSIBLE FACTORS; THE PREVIOUS STAIN THAT WAS ON THE DECK, THE TYPE AND CONDITION OF THE WOOD, DIRECTION OF THE DECK, AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC, ETC. THEREFORE, WE HAVE A LIMITED PRO-RATED WARRANTY THAT ALLOWS MICHELLE TO HAVE THE HORIZONTAL PORTIONS OF THE DECK TO BE RE CLEANED AND RE STAINED FOR A FRACTION OF THE ORIGINAL PRICE. THIS PROTECTS THE CUSTOMER AND PROTECTS ROOF-TO-DECK FROM THINGS BEYOND OUR CONTROL. THE WARRANTY WAS DESIGNED TO BE FAIR AND PRACTICAL FOR BOTH THE HOMEOWNER AND ROOF-TO-DECK. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EACH OF US NEEDS TO BE FAIR AND PRACTICAL.

They came out and gave us an estimate and were at least $600.00 higher than all the other companies we received estimates from. Their literature and website (including a DVD from their founder) are pretty slick, however, the person who did the estimate was not friendly at all and hardly talked to me. He appeared not to be interested in the job. We went with another company that offered us a better price for the same quality work and had a representative that was extremely informative about the details of the project and personable.

It took nearly two months from the time I engaged them until they could do the work. They had told me it would be 3 to 4 weeks. When the work was done, it wasn't done properly. They actually missed spots, or had the stain color change on them. It too a week but they did come to fix the areas the missed. They used the wrong color stain on the areas they missed. I called them again and they came and re-did the entire floor area of the deck in the darker color. However, they didn't redo the rest of the deck (rails, seats, spindles) so I have a two-tone deck. I give up. Should I really have to call to point this out too? They appear to have NO quality control. They were also supposed to do repairs to the deck. They didn't do any of the needed repairs. Just beware of what you are getting in to.

THIS REPORT IS PERPLEXING. IT DID NOT TAKE 2 MONTHS TO GET THE WORK DONE, IT TOOK 5 WEEKS WITH A VERY RAINY SPRING. WE DIDN'T MISS ANY SPOTS. THE SEALER SOAKED INTO THE WOOD AND HE ASKED THAT WE COME OUT TO TOUCH UP THE SPOTS WHICH WE DID AS SOON AS THE WEATHER ALLOWED. WE DID NOT USE THE WRONG STAIN COLOR AND THE DECK IS NOT 2 TONED. They did sand the deck and power wash it, no stripping agent, no nails pounded in, no neutralizer used. They did stain/paint the vertical railings. Their work was slow, as there were 3 people sent out on the first day to sand. One left for one hour, 35 minutes to get a "sanding wheel". They all took 2 breaks (9:50 am and 11:50 am) and were only there from 8:20 am to 2:15 pm. The sanding at that point was no where near completed. After the deck surface was completely sanded and power washed, they spent their time staining/painting the vertical surfaces. However, in staining/painting the vertical surfaces with a dark gray stain, they splattered, spilled and made a complete mess on the newly sanded deck surface, on our decorative tops on the railings and on unstained surfaces next to our deck (8 x 8's) surrounding our air conditioner. They did have tarps, they simply didn't use them where they were staining. When we returned home to see the mess they were making, we asked them to leave and called the owner. When he returned our call, in which we were explaining why we had asked the crew to leave, we were disconnected somehow. The end result was that we had to pay to have the deck re-sanded and had to replace the damaged decorative tops. We paid them for the work completed and subtracted the additional expenses that we incurred.
Description of Work: The bid for our large deck stated that they would use "stripping agent to remove old coating", pound in nails that were "protruding above deck surface", wash the wood, treat wood with neutralizing agent, sand with "different types of sanders", stain/paint vertical surfaces, seal/stain horizontal surfaces. The bid was $4700 approximately.

I SPOKE WITH HER MANY TIMES BEFORE THE PROJECT AND AT THE BEGINNING AND DURING HER PROJECT. THE CUSTOMER HAD A QUOTED PRICE FOR THIS PROJECT SO I'M CURIOUS AS TO WHY SHE WAS CONCERNED WITH WHAT MY EMPLOYEE'S WERE DOING. WE ACTUALLY HAD SOME EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS ON THE FIRST DAY THAT DID NOT ALLOW OUR MEN TO WORK AS EFFICIENTLY AS EXPECTED. HOWEVER, THIS DID NOT IMPACT THE CUSTOMER. THIS PROJECT REQUIRED SOME SPECIAL EQUIPMENT THAT WE ACQUIRED. AFTER THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROJECT WHICH INCLUDED SANDING AND CLEANING I TALKED TO HER TO MAKE SURE SHE WAS SATISFIED. SHE SAID SHE WAS. AGAIN, I TALKED TO HER FREQUENTLY DURING THIS PROJECT. REGARDING THE STAINING, WE WERE USING A STAIN THAT WAS UNFAMILIAR TO US. I TALKED WITH HER AT LENGTH AND SPECIFICALLY INFORMED HER THAT THIS STAIN WAS BRAND NEW TO US AND THEREFORE WOULD REQUIRE US TO LEARN THE VAGARIES OF THIS STAIN ON HER DECK. I TOLD HER TO EXPECT PROBLEMS BUT THAT WE WOULD WORK THROUGH THEM. I CALLED THE STORE WHERE SHE PURCHASED THE STAIN TO LEARN AS MUCH AS WE COULD BEFORE WE STARTED. WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND OUR STAIN AND OUR PRODUCTS. THE STAIN WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO APPLY AND EVEN WITH PRECAUTIONS FOUND THAT THE STAIN WOULD RUN AND GET ON ITEMS NOT INTENDED TO BE STAINED. WE CLEANED THOSE AREAS AS THEY OCCURRED AND KNEW THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO DO SOME TOUCH UP SANDING BEFORE COMPLETING THE PROJECT. ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE STAINING I CALLED HER 3 TIMES TO MAKE SURE SHE WAS HAPPY WITH THE WORK WE WERE DOING. AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY OF STAINING THE CUSTOMER CALLED ME, WAS VERY RUDE AND TERMINATED THE PROJECT.

Unfortunately, they never got back with me.
Description of Work: Called Roof-to-Deck Restoration and requested they come out to give me an estimate to have a new deck stained. The lady who answered the phone took down my contact information and said someone would call me in the next 1-2 days. I didn't from anyone the next day so I called back the day after to see if someone was available to talk with me. She said someone would be calling me. I never received a call back over the next 3-4 days so I went with another provider. I gave them both our home number and my cell number so I'm not sure what happened. Overall service was disjointed and much less professional than the job they did 2 years ago. The estimator, the cleaner and the sealer were three different people who did not coordinate, see the job in the same way and were occasionally even critical of each other. The job estimate was approved on May 15th and the work was completed July 14th - slow but understandable in view of lots of rain and a busy time of year. My experience 2 years ago was excellent. This year I felt as though I was dealing with a different company. Many firms experience growth problems and service quality cycles. Don't write this firm off your list, but try to have one person responsible for the job and for your satisfaction from beginning to end.
Description of Work: Cleaned and resealed deck which had weathered considerably since the same firm did the initial cleaning and sealing two years ago.

They were wonderful! First they came out and gave us an estimate and explained the process. It went exactly as they told us it would. When we called with the deposit, we were told that it would be 5 weeks as they were booked solid. They came out in a little less than 5 weeks, power washed the deck on a Thursday and the following Tuesday it was stained. It looks fantastic!
Description of Work: They came out and power washed the deck then stained it.
