We interviewed 4 companies with A ratings on Angie's list and chose Redstone and am so glad. Where do I begin...these guys are great! They exceeded our expectations. They care so much about their work and the results and making their customers happy. We met with Bob initially and he gets you going with everything you need to decide (materials, layout, budget, etc.) to make your project what you want it to be while his partner Dan takes care of the job site and everything that goes with that. They are very detailed and dedicated to making the project go smoothly and are on top of everything; We even went on vacation for a week while they were working on our home! Bob made sure we stayed on budget and kept us up to speed. Dan was great about getting us a time line and making sure everything was exactly how we wanted it. The subs they used were also very professional, hardworking, and very good at what they do. I was surprised at all the comments about preferring to work with Redstone over other companies. They also helped us in so many other area. For example, we wanted to paint our entire interior so they found a painting company that would not only do the remodel painting but that would give us the best price to paint the whole interior. They had the electrician add new light fixtures throughout the house and prewire for future projects, and much more. They have come back to check things over and answer any questions after the work has been complete. They were a pleasure to work with and I can't wait to start our next project with them! I would recommend them to anyone looking for great contractors that are trustworthy, hardworking, priced competitively, and on top of their game!
Description of Work: They gutted our entire lower level and main floor bathroom. Downstairs they removed a wall put in an 800 lb. support beam, dug up a bathroom and moved it, fixed floor joists, added fireplace, built-ins, surround sound and much more. Remodeled main floor bath.
The overall experience is excellent. One of the reason I selected Redstone is because of the good report they consistently received (key word- consistently) from their customers. I am very pleased with their service. I have no problem to recommend them to anyone who is looking for quality work. Bob and Dan are excellent partners; they work together as a team and they know what they are doing. As I talked to some of the subcontractors, they all said very nice thing about Redstone. They felt this is a really great company to work with. Bob and Dan know their trade and they have broad connection with people who share the same standard as they do. Here are some of the specifics- Hi standard- they really want the best for their customers. They would give multiple options but then respect our final decision. They were very patient to explain things over, often multiple times. At the end, you feel that you have two experts working along your side to make the best decision. Working relationship- very friendly, trustworthy and flexible. I guess once you are convinced that they have your best interest in mind, everything becomes very easy. What is more important in any of the working relationship? Go extra miles- yes, they helped us out in many different things which has little to do with the contract. They helped us to adjust sliding door, tightening rails and whole bunch other things. As long as the request is reasonable, they are willing to fit it in. One more thing, they called you back, send you e-mail right away. From communication point of view, they really understand the importance of keeping the customer informed. This also impressed us that they really stay on top of what is going on. Schedule- they take it seriously. They and their subcontractors worked together to meet the schedule. Yes, there was situation out of their control, but you know they have no heistation to put in extra hours to keep the schedule. Bottom line- I am very pleased with the whole experience. If you are looking for a company you can trust, results you feel great about, Bob and Dan obviously did their share to convince me. There were no surprises, they finished the job; cleaned up everything. Even came back couple weeks later to help us out with some work which has nothing to do with the contract (without charging us) What more can you say!
Description of Work: Basement remodeling including 1) fix a pre-exist bedroom to meet the building code; 2) finish a bathroom; 3) finish a large gathering room; 4) adding a cedar closet and 5) fireplace. Redstone purchased all material, coordinate with subcontractors and passed the city inspection.

Absolutely great experience. I found Redstone through Angie's list and hired them after having interviewed a few others. This was a big project and I was a little nervous about giving it to a company I knew little about except what I had read on this forum. Well, let me just day that I am a completely satisfied customer. I won't go into every detail of the experience but let me just say that: 1 - they are honest and trustworthy (reason enough to hire them...); 2 - they have a great deal of experience doing both remodeling and new construction; 3 - they care about their clients being satisfied with the end product; 4 - they respond to calls or emails almost immediately; 5 - they are cost conscious and have good ideas of where you might be able to trim costs and still get what you want. Overall an excellent experience! Lastly, they have a sense of humor and are fun to work with! (do not underestimate the importance of that when you are involved in a major remodeling project.)
Description of Work: Big remodel of a single story house. The house was basically rebuilt from the foundation up adding a second story to it. It was finished on time and on budget.

The experience was great,Dan Larson and Bob Appert meet with us during the initial planning stages and gave us a complete run down what to expect. We also gave them a very narrow window in which to work and they delivered. We got regular updates from Dan on what would be happening during the course of the project. They took care of everything including the scheduling, delivering of supplies, building permits and inspections. The crew that performed the work were and all very punctual and friendly and professional. The site was was keep impeccable and except for the builders sign in front of the house no none would have known that we were having our basement finished. There were no piles of building supplies stacked outside and no dumpster. They removed the rubble daily and keep everything well organized within the basement. They completed the job well within budget and time and the also under took additional tasks at no additional cost, which we very really appreciated.
Description of Work: Complete Build out of an Unfinished Basement, with one bedroom, a full bath room a study and general living space/entertainment area.

This was probably the best experience I’ve had with a home improvement project. After meeting with me to get an explanation of what I wanted to do with our basement, Bob Appert returned a detailed proposal and a blueprint for the new bedroom. Bob was very responsive during the several weeks it took for me to ask questions, compare proposals from other vendors, etc. He answered my questions, updated the proposal when necessary, and provided a good list of references that I could contact. I had a clear understanding up-front of the cost for the project, as well as the cost for any upgrades I chose to make. The payment schedule was clearly defined in the contract. Once work started in late April, it moved along at a steady pace. Redstone did a fantastic job managing the project. Materials were delivered as they were needed, and placed where they needed to be. Dan Larson was on site to meet with sub-contractors and check on the work every day. When decisions had to be made Dan always gave me adequate lead time to make the decision. He kept me informed about the schedule for each week, so I’d know when someone would need access to the house. If I wanted to contact him he normally responded to a phone call or e-mail within an hour. During the project, Dan made some suggestions for improvements, most of which I decided to adopt. There wasn’t often any additional cost for the improvement – just an idea for a different (better) way to do something that we had discussed. The project finished on time, even though we were slow in selecting the flooring for the bedroom. Because we discussed the cost of the upgrades I requested before they were done, the final bill was not a surprise. The original estimate was right on, and the only additions were my upgrades. Even with the upgrades it was less than the other proposals I received. Redstone made this a very easy project for me. The sub-contractors they selected to participate in the project were great – very professional, competent, and respectful of our home. It was clear they all take pride in their work. The end product is better than we expected. Family and friends have commented on the quality of the work. I would not hesitate to use Redstone again for another project.
Description of Work: Build a large bedroom in an unfinished section of our basement, including framing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, millwork/finish carpentry, painting and installation of laminate wood flooring; remove existing vinyl flooring, and reinstall new vinyl flooring in a hallway and bathroom.
Owner Bob Appert promptly answered our emails and calls, and carefully reviewed our plans?asking many questions about what we wanted from the project. Redstone?s bid was a great value, detailed and easy to read. It was also customized to our wants and needs, which was lacking in other cookie-cutter bids. We met with Bob and owner Dan Larson several times to ask questions and always received prompt, direct and clear answers. These are experienced contractors who have worked on historical homes and new construction, so they have seen it all, and can give you examples of what works well. We were amazed that one of the lowest bids for our project was so well done?Redstone thought of everything, put it all down in black-and-white, and listed their guaranteed not-to-exceed price on page one. That?s hard to find these days. We asked for, and promptly received, lists of proposed subcontractors, all with good references. Everything?from excavation to foundation work to framing and electrical to drywall, paint and finish carpentry, has been high-quality professional work. Touch-up, change orders, fixture selection, all has been trouble-free and very well done. Though quality is excellent and price is very competitive, the highest compliments I would give this company are for flexibility and responsiveness. Dan and Bob are easy to reach quickly via email, phone or Blackberry with any question or concern, and always willing to talk through anything. Every size project involves many daily decisions, but there was never a hitch?just clear communication, open discussion and prompt agreement. Bob and Dan helpfully pointed out cost savings opportunities and inexpensive quality improvements. In fact, they saved us so much on our the main contract that we were able to spend our contingency funds on long-term maintenance items instead?saving us even more money over time. Redstone budgets very well; they were able to absorb minor overruns without charging us. They also build to high quality standards: for example, the flooring is rock-solid, built to a higher spec than residential code--built to last, not just to get done. They included several elements on our project that exceeded the plan spec (but not the budget). The work looks fantastic, and perfectly matches our 1920?s home. The oak trim and hardwood floors look so much like the original that several friends have asked where the new addition begins; it?s that good. All that remains on our project is stucco and landscaping when weather permits. Bob and Dan agreed to start construction with us on our schedule late last October, knowing that without a warm fall we?d have to finish this spring. The fall rain and snow proved them right, but the schedule helped our budgeting and we appreciate their flexibility. We recommend Redstone Builders wholeheartedly, and will call them first with any future projects. This is a great company whose quality and value are hard to beat.
Description of Work: In 2008 we approached 12 contractors with plans to expand our 1200 sq. ft. stucco St. Paul home (built in 1926) with a 1-story addition and a full basement. The total added space is ~800 sq. ft. and includes a ¾ bath, family room / bedroom, entryway and finished basement.
We are very cost conscious. We wanted to complete the basement ourselves to save money. We found that the cost of having Redstone be the general contractor was only slightly more than the cost of individual trades up front. They were able to finish the project in 3 weeks as opposed to 6 months. They had great recommendations for finishing touches with the framing and drywall. They added multiple curved surfaces (no mark-ups) to better hide the ducts. They also were extremely flexible in answering questions even after the job was complete. Any warranty issues were quickly resolved (1-2 days) with no questions asked. By the time the project was completed, we easily saved thousands of dollars, months of frustration, and received a 10x higher quality project by working with Bob and Dan. Dan and Bob were very trustworthy and I knew I could trust their recommendations were aligned with our objectives, not their own personal agenda.
Description of Work: We had a basic basement remodel. The work entailed general contracting the rough-in: frame, drywall, heating, plumbing, and electric. The total area was approximately 900 sq ft. We had the basic plan detailed and Redstone provided recommendations for improvements and design. The final finishing work was done by the home owners with consultation support and vendor recommendations from Redstone.
Workers were always on time, cleaned up every day, addressed issues in a very timely manner. All workers were polite and respectful of us and tried to keep disruption minimal when possible. Project was finished on time, to the day! Came back promptly to do any finishing touches and a few thing we added on.
Description of Work: Total kitchen remodel. A wall was removed, new floor, appliances, cabinets, countertops, lighting, paint, pantry added, and backsplash installed. Family room fireplace replaced, window removed, hardwood floors installed and carpet removed throughout house and wood floors refinished.

Comments: Owner Bob Appert listened closely to what we wanted and was confident in what they could accomplish within our budget. The construction was overseen by owner Dan Larson. He was onsite daily and available to address any unforeseen issues that occurred. Opening walls and floors in a 25 year old house is bound to result in a few suprises. Dan seemed as committed to our home as he would have been to his own. The subs working in our home were experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. Both Bob and Dan of Redstone Builders are very responsive to concerns. They stand behind their work.
Description of Work: Description: $400,000 remodel and update of 1985 home. Approx. 4500 sf. This was a house with a traditional floor plan. The main floor was redesigned to an open floor plan. This included removing a kitchen wall and full new kitchen design, widening doorways to arches, raising a sunken floor to match other floor heights, and changing an outdated 2 story solarium room to a new 2 story addition. The project involved new windows, framing, drywall, knockdown ceilings, millwork, cabinets and appliances, wood floors and carpet, lighting, painting, HVAC, plumbing, a new laundry room and powder room. The master bedroom and bathroom were also completely remodeled. Additional work was completed in the lower level of the home, including newly designed family room and teen suite. Extensive exterior work was required where the addition was added. New windows, roof and foundation repair were needed.
The project went extremely well! Our home is over 100 years old and we've been restoring it for the past 15-years. This project was the final step in our restoration, and was very important to us given the personal time and the money we've already invested. Redstone coordinated the entire project, and handled the construction and finishing of the garage themselves. I should mention that the "garage" we built is something better described as a "carriage house" than simply a garage. It's design was done to match the unique design of our home and was built large enough to accommodate four cars and provide ample storage on the second floor. Because it is a detached building and we have a fairly steep grade running from the house, there was considerable landscaping needed to put the building where we wanted it and tie everything together. Bob and Dan became involved after we had plans drawn and variances approved from the city. The project had been planned for several years. They bid the job on a competitive basis and we selected them both because their bid was competitive and we grew very comfortable with them during the bidding process. The project started on time, and unlike some other firms we have worked with in the past, they had people working on the project virtually every day from start to finish. We came in on-time, on-bid, and with outstanding quality and workmanship. For the stone patio, new driveway, and retaining walls, Redstone coordinated the work with subcontractors. They remained very involved and helped keep the project moving toward completion. They did a great job making this portion of the job go smoothly both by managing the subcontracted firms well, and in offering advice and suggestions as decisions needed to be made. I would strongly recommend using Redstone, they are professional in every aspect of their work!
Description of Work: We hired Redstone to complete a very extensive project that included demolishing our existing garage, landscaping the back and side of our home, building a new garage, and managing the finish work on our landscaping, which included putting in a large stone patio, a new driveway and retaining walls in several locations. A very extensive project.
It went great - I can't say enough about how satisfied we are from working with Redstone. We had a strict deadline - an upcoming wedding that would blend two families. Once they got started it was a flurry of tightly scheduled activity everyday with many subcontractors coming and going. The best part was all I had to do was pick out my finishes and everything else was handled by Redstone. Not only were Bob and Dan great to work with, but everyone that they used were very pleasant to have around. There were also many surprises dealing with a house built in 1969 and they were great in figuring out a solution to every unexpected problem. None of the problems were their fault, but they dealt with them all without charging extra. Any kind of problem solving, big and small, seems to be their specialty. We've had several months to live with the changes and are very pleased with the job as a whole and our experience with Redstone. I wish we had another project we could use them for! When we do we will certainly give them a call.
Description of Work: Total update to most of the rooms in the home - the 1970s look had to go! No walls were moved, but almost every other surface was improved in some way. New wood floors and carpet, New doors/trim, Granite kitchen counter top, appliances and new pantry, Bathroom fixtures, Painting throughout, Deck repair, Curved archways/thresholds.
It went very well. I am so satisfied with the final project. I spent more than the original estimate BUT I had an agreement with Redstone at the beginning that I would talk to them about every change I wanted and I would be very willing to pay the additional costs. They were always helpful in discussing those changes, giving me better solutions and estimating the additional costs. It was worth the additions we made. I really liked working with them from the initial conversations to the final walk-through. The subs they brought it were also excellent. Two of them mentioned that Dan and Bob are "very particular" about their projects. They weren't complaining, just explaining the work ethic. They were timely, thorough, easy to work with and I love this new space. They have also had a lot of experience. Both Bob and Dan have done projects on their own and they have also been construction managers for some of the very large home builders. And they know and work well with a number of local sub contractors and suppliers. They bring a lot to the project.
Description of Work: Redstone Builders did a complete remodel of an office, laundry, bathroom and storage area. They tore out walls, flooring, shelving, bathroom fixtures..and then they rebuilt walls, added a shower, new sink and stool, washer/dryer, storage units, covered old paneling, recarpeted laid tile, hung sliding doors to hide the furnace, etc. and painted everything. It was a transformation.
Redstone did a fantastic job! From start to finish it took them less than 1 month as promised. They did the framing themselves and hired top quality contractors. Owners Bob Appert & Dan Larson were a pleasure to work with. They kept us updated daily on the progress of the job & worked around our schedules. They also didn't mind letting us hire a friend to do the electrical and duct work & we took care of the carpet. The framing turned out excellent & they had some great ideas that we used. One idea was to put a corner art niche in the bedroom behind the door to really add a nice look. Another idea was to remove the door at the bottom of the stairs in the basement & a knock out a portion of the wall to optimize space. The drywall contractors were very diligent workers that kept the rest of our home clean. Most impressive was the carpenter that did all of the woodwork. He was a true craftsman! Redstone also did the little things such as furnace cleaning & shelves in closet.
Description of Work: Finished lower level basement (playroom/exercise area) and a large bedroom. Worked performed by Redstone was framing, drywall (hanging, taping, and mudding), hanging and spraying ceiling, woodwork (which included trim, doors, oak ledge and oak wrapped columns), and painting.
Bob Appert and Dan Larson (co-owners) were absolutely fabulous to work with from start to finish. They were willing and able to work closely with us on small details of the design / initial blueprint, specifically in regard to problem solving how best to accommodate the furnace and mechanicals so as to maximize the living space. They both took a sincere personal interest in the project, visiting the worksite daily to ensure that things were progressing according to plan and that I was happy. They were willing to make mid course corrections as needed, such as re-doing the framing in a closet and running additional Cat-5 cables in the office, even after it was completed. My project was finished on time, with impeccable workmanship. The workers that they contract with are highly professional. The final walk through included attention to the finest details. The intrusion on my personal life during construction was minimal, and the clean up during and after the project was complete.
Description of Work: Contractor completely finished basement to include game room, sitting area / home theater, music room, home office, and full bathroom. Total finished square feet was approximately 1000. Mill work, doors, and cabinets were done in solid maple that completely matched the home's upstairs. Carpet, flooring, and tile allowances were substantial. Complete wiring for 7.1 surround sound (recessed speakers throughout) was included, with the wiring conveniently terminating in a closet that will house the A-V components. Full maple cabinets and closet work also done in the home office that includes 3 work stations all with data ports that wire into the home's central networking router. Extra insulation was installed in the music room. Rough in for central water purification system was included.
