I was calling moving companies and comparing estimates and this company said he would do it right away and asked me what the other companies were offering so he could get me the best price. I told him what the other companies were quoting and he couldn't go lower than them. He then told me that the other companies with the lower quotes were not professional and not to choose them because I would regret it. I gave him my email for the written estimate and then after that he emailed me telling me that even if I had gotten lower quotes that they were still the better moving company and that they had zero complaints and that they are the best moving company in the area. He really pressed that having zero complaints was unheard of for a moving company. For $20 I would risk having my things broken and scratched. He explained that they moved over 400 customers a year and every one had been satisfied and that if they ever made a mistake they would fix it. That no other company offered this level of service. I didn't like that he contacted me in that way. He did try to give me his best price though.
Description of Work: I used Lighthouse Moving to get a quote for moving. The price included the first three hours and then after it would be $95 per hour.

They did a very good job and even came up with bolt cutters to remove a bike from a lock where the key was missing. They were polite and did a good job covering the stairs and floor to keep our rugs from getting dirty. They worked hard and were flexible at our house when we had to differentiate items to go upstairs, in the kitchen or in the basement. My only criticism is that we had a large hutch and we weren't sure how it came apart. They tried to get it upstairs at our house but weren't able to get it up. I asked if they had one of those short screwdrivers to take it apart and they they they didn't. Our handyman came over a few days later and took the top off and between us we got it upstairs. They might want to have one of those short screwdrivers on their truck.

The moving went very smoothly. I had 20 something boxes to move from 2nd floor to 2nd floor in my new apartment. No big furniture to move. I contacted John and discussed about the price, time to move etc. The movers (Ricky and Tim) arrived on time. They were in constant touch with me about the arrival time. They were careful with my stuff. The move was over within 1 hr and 15 min. Obviously since its 2 hr minimum, I had to pay for it, but I dont have any regrets for that. Most importantly the move went smoothly, and ricky and tim were professional and courteous. Highly recommended.

I had contacted John Hathaway through email as we had used the company 2 previous times, I have all emails saved as far as date and time sent for confirmation. From: Lthousemoving@aol.com <Lthousemoving@aol.com>; To: <just>; Subject: Re: September 14th Move Lighthouse Moving Sent: Tue, Aug 27, 2013 6:57:28 PM Hi Diane, Your all set up for September 14th, 2013, at 9:30 AM. Sincerely, John Hathaway The morning of Sept 14th no one had arrived and I called John, he said Diane I do not have you on the books for today and I have 2 crews out already, I have no one available. I told him I had confirmation that I was on the books and could prove it to him, he blamed his secretary that she didn't put me down which later I find out he doesn't even have a secretary he takes care of his own bookings. I told him I needed to be out of the apt. in the morning as I had cleaners coming to completely clean the apt. as I was layed up at the time and not able to do any of the cleaning. He suggested that I go on "CRAIGSLIST" to find someone to move me then. How professional is that when you can't try to fix the situation. He then told me he would send out a crew of 3 guys but it would probably be after lunch and he would give me the 3rd guy for free to get it done quickly. I continued to call him up until 6 pm that night as no one had arrived to move me, plus the cleaners were there and gone already. I HAD TO MOVE EVERYTHING in all the rooms from side to side so the cleaners could do their best, which was not easy as I had a cast on my leg and not able to do things. At this point I told him that my storage unit place was going to be closing soon for the day and they would not be done in time. He "promised" me that he would have a crew in the morning at 9 am the next day. The next day came and at 9:30 am I got a call from the guys coming that they were running a little behind and would be there in 10 min. but they didn't arrive until 40 min. later. There were only 2 guys when I was promised 3 so it would be done quicker. The 2 guys did the best they could but at this point I was not happy as after they were done with my move I had to come back to the apt. and clean up after them again to make sure the apt. was spotless when I had already spent $305.73 to Merry Maids for cleaning the day before. When the guys told me how much I owed I told them that it should be less than that, John did not hold up his end of the bargain. They said he didn't charge you $60 for use of the truck and gave you $10 off per hour. I explained that if the 3rd guy was there it would not have taken as long as it did and it would have been less, I know they were only relaying information to me from John so I paid them so they could get on their way but said I was going to take it up with John which I did. Once again for being a professional company he did not handle it very professional. I also reported him to the BBB which will be on his report for the next 3 years. The only thing I was asking for at this point was a better deal instead of $382 because of JOHN's mix up not mine. Hi John, I did pay the amount today that the movers said that I owed I still feel that I was not given a good deal especially after everything that has happened AND having to go on a second day instead. You said I would be getting a 3rd person for the price of 2 and free truck. Today they took off only $10 per hour and no truck fee but if I had that 3rd person as PROMISED they would have been done much sooner and less cost to me... remember this was YOUR mix up not mine and made my life absolutely miserable for 2 days instead of 1 plus I had to re-clean the apartment today after the movers were done for my move out walk through!!! I feel you need to reimburse me some of my payment from today. I Will wait to hear from you as you can call or email. Hi Diane, I gave you $105.00 off of your bill. (4.5 X $10 = $45.00 + the $60 truck charge = $105.00). That shows a good faith estimate on my part to compensate you for your trouble. Most companies would have simply not moved you, or if they had moved you, they would not have discounted your move. I have gone far beyond what most moving companies do. I'm sorry that your move got postponed for a day. But no company is perfect. We do an awesome job, 99% of the time. But no company can be expected to get everything right all the time. A copy of this response is being saved for my records. John Hathaway John... you work in an industry just like I do where the "customer" is always right! You even admitted to screwing it up yourself and I had the confirmation email in this email where you confirmed with me I was all set on Tuesday August 27th for September 14 @ 9 am!!! You did PROMISE me a 3rd guy for my move to go quicker which didn't happen! Is this the way you are running your business these days giving people "HOPE" that you are going to show up? The way I see it is if you would have given me 3 guys for the price of 2 when 2 did the move it should have been for the price of 1 guy or as price half of $95 = $47.50 Ă— 4.5 hrs. I am sorry if you would not make a profit on my move or much of one but sometimes you as a company just needs to "eat that" because of your screw up!!!!! If you plan on doing nothing about this you have my word that I Will be writing reviews and telling everyone about this HORRIBLE experience you and your company put me through. I Will also let my apartment complex know so they would not recommend you to people looking for a moving company. I am a good honest person who likes what is right... not just something that you are trying to smooth over! Hopefully this review will help others who are looking for a moving company!

Showed up on time and were thorough in hteir preperations. The wrapped everything, and packed the truck carefully. On arrival in Grove City, they unpacked quickly, with a storm coming. They were intent on getting all the goods moved inside prior to the storm. The crew was polite and professional. On;ly downside was one article was as wide as hte door jamb. That left makrs on the jamb, but i don't see how it could have been avoided. They worked hard to try and not scrath anything. I hghly recommned Lighthouse for any move!

These guys have good marks on Angie's List and a very good hourly rate. They were going to charge me $170 / hr for 3 guys and a truck which was the lowest I could find out of the top Angie's List providers. I told John (the owner) I was going to go with his company and booked them a couple weeks before our move. On the Friday before the move, I called him to confirm we were set up for Monday. We were. Everything was in place. Just before we hung up, I asked if there was a minimum just in case the move went far faster than we thought (highly unlikely but I wanted the information anyway). We were going to move all the small furniture, pictures, boxes, etc. that weekend before the movers on Monday. I only wanted the movers to do the items I couldn't handle easily. Once I asked that question, the tone of the conversation (and the relationship as a whole) took a drastic turn. John suddenly became VERY nervous that I wasn't going to pay my bill. He didn't trust me any more. He suddenly asked that I put down a credit card number to continue with the move on Monday. He wouldn't proceed without one. He hadn't asked for one at any point before this. He said it was standard practice by the moving companies to ask for a credit card but he didn't usually do it. (This isn't true by the way - the company I eventually went with (Good Stuff Moving) never asked for a credit card before the move.) He said I could choose to not do the move with them if I didn't want to put down a credit card. He said he wasn't going to charge the credit card in advance. So fearing I wouldn't have anyone to move me (since it was 3 days before the move - I had no idea if anyone else was available), I gave him my credit card number. I immediately got off the phone and called another company I had on my list. Luckily they were available so I booked them. I called John back to cancel the move. He was true to his word and let me cancel my move with him. However, before I had called him back he had charged my credit card $1 to make sure I had given him a correct number. He told me he would mail me the $1 he had charged. I have yet to see that money. I was very disappointed at the lack of trust this company had in me after I asked about the minimum. I realize he knows nothing about my situation and if I am an honest person or not. But that is the case for every single business transaction he enters into with any potential customer that calls in. I don't believe my question about a minimum should alter our relationship that drastically. I happily paid Good Stuff Moving over $1600 for our move and was extremely happy with their services. I don't have any reason to believe Lighthouse wouldn't have provided similar service at a lower price. Unfortunately I was never able to find out because the owner didn't trust me. I was very disappointed at the way I was treated by the owner.

Response from LIGHTHOUSE MOVING
The problem wasn't his response to my answer about their being a minimum charge. The problem I had that created a trust issue, was his response to me when I told him his move would take much longer than 3 hours. He acted very surprised, and commented as if he thought his move should take about 1/2 of that time. I tried tto explain to him that he had a large house and that he was probably looking at two truck loads, and 10 - 12 hours. He was really not interested in hearing this at all. So I decided we were not communicating very well, despite my best intentions. As a result at that point I did request a credit card number, up front. Something which I sometimes do, in questionable situations. Sincerely, John Hathaway (Owner Lighthouse Moving)

We contacted Lighthouse to confirm the pick up, The first thing John said was that my wife did not text him the information, she had the text still on her phone. John had given her the wrong number, I called the number he had given her and was given another number to call to contact him. When I called the new number John proceeded to change the estimate he gave my wife. After much discussion, John agreed to deliver the cabinet for the price agreed on. He then changed the time of pick up and delivery to 2 hours later than agreed. After waiting until 4 pm for a 2 pm pickup I contacted John to ask where the cabinet was. The "crew" had not even picked up the item yet and he said it would be another half hour. At this point I cancelled the service, we could not even trust that we would receive the cabinet at all. John's complete lack of concern and rudeness on the phone were definitely in line with the lack of service. Anyone using this mover should be very careful, have a lot of extra time and get all quotes in writing. We called this person because of a positive review on Angie's List, just goes to show how inaccurate things can be if you don't review.

Not sure how I got my phone number wrong, I've had the same number for 9 years. I never received the information about their curio cabinet, so assumed the move was not going to happen. I had no way to know that they still wanted us to do their move. He called at the last minute, and we already had a tight schedule for that day, but promised him that we would get to it. Which we could have, but apparently he could not wait any longer for the cabinet to be delivered. He was very rude with me when he called me up to cancel. I often get 25 - 30 calls a day, and some times I may miss a call. If this customer was really interested in getting a hold of me, all he had to do was call back! I am a small company and do not have a secretary to take my calls. Its too bad he didn't call us back, I'm sure we would have done a great job, and saved him some money. Overall it was a good experience, and I would use them again. Initially they showed up 3 hours late, but this was due to a difficult move before mine that wasn't as planned, and the movers did call and keep me posted on the status, so I knew where things were at, and was able to get other things done without sitting around waiting. They accommodated me with a third mover to make sure the move got done that day. I was happy with the way the movers handled it. The movers were terrific. They worked hard, loaded fast, and packed the truck well. I was impressed with how much they fit in a 24' truck, and without damaging our stuff. I think there was a lack of communication between management and the movers, since the movers had some different pricing than I was quoted for transport, but the movers were great, and figured out the discrepancy and took care of it. Thanks to those 3 movers, I would recommend these guys for a move if you are looking. I was happy with the overall move.

We needed some movers ASAP after another company flaked out. We were moving a number of belongings (boxes and furniture) out of our house and into a storage unit so we could stage our house for selling. Lighthouse Moving was very responsive and were able to come out the next day to help us. The 2-man crew was polite, courteous, careful, and did a great job. We plan to use them again to move our stuff from the storage unit to the new house!

They did an excellent job of moving our household belongings from our old house to our new house. They also moved our large disassembled playhouse to our new yard and even helped my father reassemble the playhouse. They wrapped all of our furniture and provided carpet coverings so our carpet was not soiled. It was a rainy, wet, cold day and our carpet was not stained. Nothing was broken in the move. The movers were courteous and friendly. Overall we were very satisfied with the movers and did not have any complaints. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a moving company.

Truck showed up on time at 8:30 Saturday morning with a three man team. Within an hour they had my entire house emptied and loaded into the truck. Drove to the new house and unloaded it in about two hours. Then it was off to my fiance's house to repeat the process. She had considerably more stuff than me and the guys ended up filling the truck two more times and unloading it as well. These guys worked a very long hard day, more than 12 hours by the time the last things were off the truck. They were all easy going and flexible to work with. Not uniformed professionals as some firms advertise, but that didn't matter to me.

If it was just a matter style, I wouldn't write anything at all. Everyone can decide for themselves what they think of a sales pitch. We personally don't care for the "salesy" style, and for that and other reasons quickly decided not to go with Lighthouse. However, after about our third or fourth call from John at Lighthouse I told him that we had decided to go with another company. At that point he crossed a line and moved from salesy to manipulative. The conversation was unpleasant and sadly funny. So I am writing a review just to add our little bit of experience for the benefit of those members for whom prior reviews relating to experiences with John may be a compelling and deciding factor in choosing Lighthouse. Our experience has also been very unpleasant.

Response from LIGHTHOUSE MOVING
We did not move them. I did talk with him about his upcoming move. He told me at first that he had to check some things out about our company and would get back to us. When he didn't get back to us, I called him back, and he still sounded upbeat and optimistic about going with our company. He said he would decide, and get back to us by Monday or Tuesday. When he didn't call, I called him back. At this time he finally told me that he had decided not to go with us. Because of our previous conversations I was holding a moving date open for him, so this last conversation was not a warm and fuzzy one. As to his comment about my "Sales Pitch". I am very passionate about Lighthouse Moving. We do a great job at a reasonable price. Not sure how I can talk about our company without well - talking about our company! I'm sorry that he felt inclined to write a negative review about us. Sincerely, John Hathaway

These movers were amazing. They were flexible to our needs and very responsive. They worked with our schedules, were flexible with last minute scheduling changes, were always courteous and were fine having us work alongside them. I got multiple quotes and Lighthouse was by far the lowest. I was nervous about that because sometimes price does reflect quality, but there was absolutely no need to worry. They did an amazing job for us. John, the owner, is a real down to earth guy who tells it how it is. He may come off to you as gruff or unprofessional, but don't be put-off. He is the nicest person, really cares about the service he provides his clients and tries to give you a fair deal. He will work with you on problems and is very solutions focused.
Description of Work: We had them come on 4 different occasions to pack a very large home with tons of stuff and to move furniture and boxes to 2 different locations. They also agreed to move a very large chandelier, even though it's not in their usual realm. They made a special platform for it, removed it from the ceiling and transported it. Their "can do" attitude was very much appreciated!

I called Lighthouse on the day before I needed their services. They were able to accommodate my schedule and we set a start time for around 10:00AM. They didn?t want to give a firm time because they were coming from the other side of town and the weather was supposed to be bad. On the day of service, Wes and Ricky called to give me an ETA and to see if they needed to pick up some salt. They got a little lost because the home was in a new development where even google has an incorrect location. They called for directions but being new to the area made it difficult. It was a frustrating situation but they were friendly and courteous. Wes and Ricky arrived around 10:10AM and got started right away. There was some sleet and snow on the ground and they had to unload the moving truck from about 50-75 feet away from the front entrance. They recommended not putting salt on the ground because it wasn?t too bad and they didn?t want to track it into the house. They also recommended putting the moving pads on the floor of the house as they became available. They unloaded into the garage first so we could act on their recommendation. They worked extremely hard and would have finished under the estimated time if we didn?t want some furniture moved around. I?ve moved across state lines three times in the past 3.5 years and have used movers to pack/unpack five of the six times. After watching multiple teams of movers, I can tell the slackers from the hard workers. Wes and Ricky were definitely on the hard working side of the scale ? to the point that I thought they were going to collapse from exhaustion.

We moved from our Apt we had movers move the large things a dining table 8 chairs and matching hutch.. a second small but heavy glass dining table no chairs.. a sectional and and armoire... 2 queen beds.. and in one bedroom a 2 night stands a dresser and chest and a table shaped like a book and and 19 inch tv no stairs no elevators.. it took them 2 hours 3 healthy young men to load this on a truck and drive 15 miles to my storage and unload in which they did in about 40 minutes just in time to go over the 3 hour minimum.. nice guys but clearly padded the time, one we barely saw and for seasoned movers which we were promised only one seem to know what to do seemed a lot of time instructing the other two on how to move things.. clearly it was deliberate for none of the healthy young men seemed obtuse.. I was disappointed.. I was hoping to not have to look for movers for a May 1st move in but I'm back to square one so I joined angie's list per another sister to see if I can do better this second time around.. they were slow but I honestly think it was on purpose.. the men were nice and I would have given a 15 percent tip instead of only 25 dollars.. but that was only on the fact that they did do the work..

Response from LIGHTHOUSE MOVING
Hello, I'm John Hathaway, the owner of Lighthouse Moving. I'm very sorry to hear this member is unhappy with the time taken by our workers to do her move. In all fairness though I have to mention a few important issues with regard to her move. When [Member's name removed] called us up, she mentioned that her roommate had some very heavy, and expensive bedroom furniture that she wanted us to be extremely careful moving. Because it was so heavy, and large, this did take extra time for our workers to move safely. And we did move all of their furniture safely, and without a scratch. Second, when the workers got to [Member's name removed] storage locker they had to spend about 20 minutes rearranging the furniture that was already in it, in order to make the additional furniture fit. This was beyond our control, and is one reason why her time went over by a very small amount. Third, we have a three hour minimum, so the amount of time she is contesting is 15 minutes! Because of 15 minutes she has given us a rating of all "F's". This does not seem like a very fair and balanced review? Sincerely, John Hathaway

I only needed them for 2 hours which was the minimum. The man on the phone was certain I would need 3 hours and when they arrived I could see why. The 2 men were very friendly but clearly not professional movers. They were slow as snails. At one point I actually hauled some of the lighter pieces like chairs to dining table and drawers to a chest out to the loading ramp to help speed things up. They did a fine job. It all got moved. I had them leave some items in the driveway just to avoid going into the third hour. I would probably choose someone else next time but they were very nice and no major complaints!
Description of Work: I hired them to move my heavy furniture in a small one bedroom first floor apartment in Minneapolis to a townhome in Hopkins. I moved all my clothing, dishes, art, etc. ( basically anything I could lift) myself.

We got the move done in two hours at a nominal cost of $150, and we did a perfect job. My workers are not slow, witness the dozens of other positive Angies List Letters. Sincerely, John Hathaway (Owner)

The guys were on time, worked hard, stayed late, and got the job done in a professional, friendly manner. They paid attention to the details and did a good job from the big stuff to the small stuff.

Lighthouse did a great job! Provided us with an accurate estimate ahead of time. Took care to move everything without any damage. This is a small company that cares about the customer.

Lighthouse did an absolutely great job for us. We were not well prepared when they got there and they were very helpfull and effcient. They needed to make two trips and it took most of the day but the crew worked very hard in very hot conditions. I would hire them again without question.

My parents really liked them and I was there during the move. My parents had scheduled them to move a very large mission-style desk with a hutch from a second story location to their new condo. They also moved other furniture that was not scheduled so they were very accommodating and careful.
Description of Work: My parents used Lighthouse Moving for moving.

I called Lighthouse Moving about 2 weeks ago to schedule an upcoming move. When I spoke to the John Hathaway, he told me a lot of bad information about other companies and not enough good information about his company (he spoke specifically about 5 other companies and why they are poor moving companies). I work in retail and was completely turned off by the sales-pitch style (all the other companies I called told me the benefits of working with them, not the negatives of going elsewhere). I booked them anyway because of the low price but booked a different company a few days ago that had better customer service. I sent an e-mail to Lighthouse yesterday saying I'd like to cancel. I got a phone call today and was asked by John Hathaway why I chose a different company. I said I was at work and didn't really have time to answer. He was rude and insisted in a sharp tone saying he needed feedback. I explained that I work in retail and didn't like the sales-pitch style that he was so down on other companies and didn't even champion his own company. At this point, he yelled at me and said, "Oh, so I can't be passionate!!!" and he HUNG UP on me! I was absolutely shocked--- worst customer service I've ever experienced!!! He sent me an e-mail later explaining that they are a growing company because they have the best rates. I responded that I appreciate this but offered my advice: when you ask for feedback, don't take it personally but instead, realize that the customer isn't required to give feedback and say thank you (even if he didn't agree!). He sent another e-mail basically saying that they get 40% of their business from referrals and they don't really need to appeal to new customers because they are so well-liked in the business (basically: we don't need you or the people you know!). He also accused me of "hearing what I wanted to hear" instead of apologizing for his behavior (he even said via e-mail about his unprofessional behavior, "Its the way I'm made, and I do not apologize for it"). Don't use them--- John will turn on you in a second!!!
Description of Work: We had originally hired them to move our furniture/boxes but canceled well in advance. When I canceled, I was yelled at on the phone, hung up on and sent rude e-mails by John Hathaway.

We never moved this woman! Her entire diatribe is based on one phone call and two e-mails. She completely distorted all three sources of communication. Her ramblings are unfair, irrational, and have nothing to do with reality. Our past record speaks for itself. We have dozens and dozens of positive letters from many Angie's List Members. Sincerely, John Hathaway (Owner)
